Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The manga ends on a high note. It's a bit of a shame Toriyama was not allowed the same with Dragon Ball.

I liked the second race much better than the first.

A huge disappointment and step down. You can tell that the author was completely out of ideas at this point.

A fun end of a manga that had a few struggles towards the end with Toriyama looking like after five years he'd run out of ideas, but this one although a repeat of an earlier idea (with some additions) manages to send it off on a high note.

Fun to see how much of Dr. Slump design wise went into Dragonball. Wish I had read this earlier.

Decided to revisit Dr slump after Toriyama passed…so interesting to see all the dragon-ball predecessors in the final volume, how he recycled the characters he liked best. RIP sensei, all your work continues to inspire the generations after you 🙏

A fun end to a fun series that tied up all loose ends and arcs in a rushed but equally fun way.

This is the final manga in the series.

Tonbe, the fox that can change its shape, returns. In another story, Suppaman in his role of reporter is faking news. Taro becomes a policeman after graduating from high school. Taro and Arale get their car driving licenses.

Then there's a strange story about a boy that has to keep riding a motorcycle or he'll die. Then there's another story about the biker boy. Arale sort of gets turned into a motorcycle.

The next story involves a new cop who wants to enforce every single rule there is. He ends up arresting almost the entire village, except for Arale who ends up putting poop on his head.

The next story is the second annual Penguin Grand Prix. This time only two-wheeled vehicles are allowed, and there's no flying and no running allowed. Senbei is the first out of the race. Charmy Yamanda and Taro are the next two eliminated. Next out is Akane. Tsuku-Tsun is out next after his sister cheats. But he gets back in. The German racer is next to drop out. The team of Arale/Gatchans/Obotchaman wins.

Finally, there's the final story of the series.
