Kido has always known that this was the life he would lead, so when he was given to the Iga Ninja Clan at the age of seven it felt like another step in the direction of his life. He does what is expected of him. He loves the freedoms, skills, strengths and women that are always at his disposal. He has never put much value in things like love, it's just not the way ninja's do things. He has always been alright with the life that was chosen for him. But he never expected his childhood friend, Nakako to grow into a woman. That humid summer day changed everything, now he can't seem to stop himself... And Why Should He?
SPOILERS: I just about jumped out of my seat when I accidentally ran across this novella while looking for the historical non-fiction book about the actual Kido. I love the cover, and I really loved seeing a book inside any genre that is completely based around people of Asian decent. I enjoyed the book thoroughly, great story, well rounded characters. I believe this book is third person but you do follow the life of a young ninja named Kido as he learns under the master of seduction Goemon. They are a rowdy pair and get into some trouble together which is fun. Kido learns the difference between sex and love unexpectedly only to then be betrayed, or so that is how he perceives it. Though I strongly suspect that he simply does not understand choices for woman during this time period were limited, and Nakako his love interest wanted a life of luxury over being the wife of a ninja. I am very excited to see what else is in store for the series.
I really enjoyed this novella, it is a fast read but pulled me in right from the prelude which are things I do not usually bother reading! (If you read Kido don't skip the prelude!) I enjoyed that the spice is spicy but keeps it classy, and honestly this novella would have been fabulous even without the spice! It is a good story. I look forward to more from this series.
This is a fast but intense romance and I was surprised more than once by the actions of the main female love interest that is for sure! I would love to see what happens when Kido and Goemon leave the ninja compound. This is a spicy romance historical novella, but it's tasteful. I will be looking for more from the series.
This is a short Novella, I enjoyed the characters. I will say third person is not my usual a reading style but this was an easy read and I always enjoy a friends to lovers- lovers to enemies story. And it had good spice plenty to keep me engaged.
