Path To Freedom: Christian Experiences And The Bible

Rate this book
The St. Paul Center Studies in Biblical Theology and Spirituality

Path to Freedom is a mature work of spiritual interpretation of the Bible and spiritual direction of the reader. It is a remarkable work of biblical theology that leaves every reader richer and no reader unchanged. Dr. Scott Hahn, in the Introduction

In this third title in the series of contemporary Catholic classics, biblical scholar and theologian Jean Corbon invites Christians into a spiritual reading of the Bible in its entirety and to explore 10 major themes of the creation, promise, pasch, exodus, covenant, kingdom, exile, return, resurrection and liturgy.

Father Corbon writes, Through a study of the chronological stages of the Old Testament, we shall try to recognize the logical and vital stages of our experience of Christ. This is not, therefore, a work of exegesis or biblical theology but rather an initiation into a spiritual reading that is, a reading in the Spirit of the Bible in its entirety.

One of the best theology books I've ever read. It reads through like a prayer, and therefore is a slow, meditative read.

In this work, Corbon takes 10 themes throughout the Bible of creation, promise, pasch, exodus, covenant, kingdom, exile, return, resurrection, and liturgy and shows how the Paschal Mystery of Christ is at work through all of them. The book was climactic in that every time I finished a chapter, I didn't think the next one could top it, but it always did. It was not that the material starts off poorly and ends beautifully, but it is more like starting in one beautiful corner of a church and slowly progressing throughout the rest, keeping each part in mind, but understanding how it all works as part of the whole. Corbon does that well in this work as everything culminates in the eternal liturgy where God and man are united forever in communion. Corbon's writing style has depth, clarity, and life in every word.

Whether or not you have read Corbon's masterpiece, Wellspring of Worship, your mind and spirit will not regret reading and contemplating Path to Freedom.
