No one will ever come closer to my heart about Tarot than Rachel Pollack and Mary Greer. These OG Tarot ladies were there for 18 year old me, bringing depth and wisdom to the cards.
However, if anyone were to get anywhere near as close to those Grande Dames, it's Theresa Reed. There's a lot of new agey stuff about Astrology and Tarot (two things Reed has written entire books on) that are fluffy and derivative. Her Astrology book didn't just stop at the easy parts--though she tells you there's a bunch beyond the scope, she gives you several steps into them anyway. The same thing with Tarot. This has the good basics, but plenty for an intermediate reader to also enjoy--it's not just Tarot 101.
Honestly, I would read a book just of her Tarot reading stories--the anecdotes really sparkle in this book. And she is encouraging, but also hints that, yeah, you do have to put in SOME work--you have to do readings. You have to know a little about numbers and their meanings.
I see a lot of people in Tarot groups on Facebook who insist that an 'intuitive' reader doesn't need defined spreads or to study anything. So I'm very pleased to see the balance Reed strikes here--that yes, intuition is a big part of leveling up and going off-LWB--but that intuition is absolutely grounded in a solid study of the cards themselves. She has a great section on what could possibly have gone wrong, when you get your readings wrong, that absolutely resonate with my own experience, and how to deal with troublesome clients.
Above all, she definitely presents intuition as a learnable skill--one that's not a magic gift that you either have or you don't but a muscle you can work and develop. It's encouraging without being fluffy. Really a great read for a new generation of readers.
Fantastic. It makes you lose your fear of cards and, without a doubt, helps you develop a lot of confidence in your own intuition. In addition to learning a lot about the tarot, it opens your mind to this incredible world that undoubtedly brings you closer in an organic way. I really enjoyed it and I am sure it will be one of my reference books when it comes to tarot.
A fantastic book that helps develop intuitive tarot-reading skills. I've been developing my craft for a few years and trying to get away from the "little white book" of card meanings. This book has helped me do just that and get comfortable with my own way of reading the cards. It's practical, encouraging, and full of wonderful advice and examples. This is a must-read for anyone wanting to further their practice!
Excellent book, realistic and modern. Gives the meaning of the tarot cards along with reversals, the situations they may be presented in, practices for journal keeping and exercises, concepts of how to go pro, affirmations and general reliance on intuition.
Finally someone spells out how to get off book! If you’re tired of reading guide after guide and trying to drill card meanings into your brain, this is the book you’ve been looking for.
This was cheesy and somewhat cringe in a way non-fiction & self help books always kinda are, but in general it was a good read. I think you could learn a lot from this if you are new to tarot and looking for something to further your understanding. As someone who is more familiar, even I want to try a few of the exercises. I did listen to the audio book on Spotify, so I attribute my quickness in finishing it to that. Overall it’s a great book and I’d recommend.
This is, in my opinion, an absolutely fantastic Tarot reference. Thersea has a way of interpreting the Tarot that really vibes with me. You may pick this up and feel differently about her interpretations, but there are also some really great and accessible exercises in here as well. Highly recommend.
Very well-rounded book, just the right amount of information and plenty of examples and exercises. It's not my favourite book on Tarot so far, but if I've read it earlier on my journey, it probably would've been.
I pre-ordered this book back in April, trying to be patient for its release. I received my copy early because of the pre-order and it did not disappoint
Theresa Reed is a great author and teacher on all things Tarot and Astrology. This book is perfect for the beginning Tarot reader and those of us well seasoned in the Tarot. The easy style of her writing belies the depth of the knowledge contained in these pages.
Her interpretations of the cards are right on target and through her words, you really understand their meaning. My favorite part of the book was on the subject of intuition - what it is in relation to Tarot, how important this is in making you a better reader, and the practical exercises she gives to hone that gift.
And if you are thinking of starting your own Tarot business, her chapter on just that is invaluable. You get the benefit of her 4o year experience of being The Tarot Lady, an expert in the field.
Don't miss out on this gem of a book or her other published books!
An easy to read and well-balanced book on intuitive tarot reading; Reed makes it clear a good tarot reading for a client is dependent on an integration of intuitive wisdom & actual knowledge of the cards. I did find the exercises somewhat distracting. This is a book I wish I’d read 30 years ago - as a then beginner, this would have provided invaluable advice.
I bought the kindle version but the paper copy would be better as this is the kind of tarot book you do want to refer back to when you’re checking up meanings & deepening your understanding of a reading.
Outstanding, and the narration is clear and professional. I love Theresa Reed. I’ve studied tarot very slowly over the past decade. This book brought me to a different level.
Theresa Reed’s Tarot: No Questions Asked is a must-have for readers looking to step away from rote memorization and truly tap into the intuitive core of Tarot. Reed goes beyond the typical card-by-card approach, crafting a guide that feels like a practical mentorship in developing your own unique reading style. This isn’t just a book about Tarot; it’s a workbook that challenges you to engage deeply with each card and cultivate the confidence to trust your own interpretations.
The structure is perfect for readers at any stage of their practice. Reed’s exercises for each card encourage you to explore not just what the cards mean, but how they resonate personally. The focus here is on learning to “speak Tarot” as a fluent, expressive language rather than as a set of fixed definitions. Her methods are accessible but impactful, pushing you to go beyond the surface and consider the nuances that make a reading insightful and precise.
What sets this book apart is the way Reed frames intuition. She emphasizes that this elusive skill can be cultivated through practice and intention, making it feel less abstract and more actionable. Her examples and exercises build gradually, allowing even skeptics to feel comfortable trusting their “sixth sense.” The second half of the book, dedicated to honing this skill in real-time readings, is where it truly shines. Reed’s approach to reading without any context or questions shows you how to rely on the cards and your instincts alone, which is invaluable for developing confidence as a reader.
Rachel Pollack’s foreword is a fitting tribute, placing Reed’s book in the lineage of guides that are less about instruction and more about transformation. Tarot: No Questions Asked succeeds in making intuitive Tarot feel both accessible and achievable. If you want to move beyond scripted readings and unlock your own interpretative voice, this book will quickly become a favorite on your shelf.
Theresa Reed packs a quirky punch in this book with her tongue-in-cheek and no-nonsense guidance and advice on using the Tarot intuitively. She approaches the topic of intuitive Tarot reading in a surprisingly practical way. I especially loved her ‘Tarotcises’ – Tarot exercises designed (amongst others) to develop intuitive reading skills, and found them really useful in my own work with the cards. Yet she also goes well beyond this topic with plenty of great, usable, down to earth advice about going pro and setting up your own Tarot business, laying down the good, the bad and the ugly of it in a straight-talking way that only someone with as much as experience as she could pull off. And of course, she also covers all the card meanings in a useful, easy-to-understand way. Theresa’s authenticity and colorful personality shines through her writing and livens the book up, making you as reader feel as if she is chatting to you from across the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. This great, all-round book is pitched so well that there would be loads of value here for Tarot beginners as well as for those on more intermediate levels. Either way, if you’re into the Tarot, this book should be on your shelf!
Reviews must be succinct or no one will put up with them. So let me just mention one part of this book that I reread multiple times before moving on, your analysis of the many facets and connections within The Celtic Cross spread. I confess this spread had begun to feel like an unwieldy, dull and visually noisy layout after 40 years.
You presented a detailed breakdown of this well-known spread with clarity, patience and generosity. Although it is clear throughout that you respect the intuitive development and unique perspectives of individual readers, this foundational lesson nevertheless helped me sort out and stabilize the often slippery meanings of the positions themselves, leading me through personal study to a place from which I can examine it freshly and then begin to add my own style and experience.
I recommend this outstanding and unpretentious book to other new and seasoned readers. It is clear why the eminent Tarot teacher Rachel Pollack chose to write the preface for you.
I enjoyed Theresa Reed's explanation of the cards in the tarot deck and their meaning, and how she does intuitive reading. I got several other tarot books from the library at the same time, and liked Theresa Reed's style of writing best, so returned the others without reading them. Also, she includes how she interprets reversed (up-side-down) cards in a reading which the other authors did not. I got a tarot deck and wanted to understand how to do the different types of reading which were explained very clearly. I could then read her explanation of the cards as a beginner, and understand what each card meant in relationship to the other cards in the type of layout I choose. Theresa Reed gave many examples of readings she had done in the past. She is writing this for someone interested in starting a business doing intuitive reading, as she gives pointers on the best practices to use and what to avoid at the end of her book... that part of the book was not as pertinent to me, but could be very helpful for someone who wants to try reading tarot cards for money.
This is a great practical guide, albeit, a bit bloated with standard card breakdowns. If you're already familiar with basic card meanings, you can comfortably skip those and just read the other two-thirds of the book surrounding that middle bit. It's also a bit light on hard attributions for the cards. While not strictly necessary, if you are going to be using the Rider-Waite deck (or any based on or derived from it or from the Golden Dawn system of magick), having an understanding of the astrological, Kabbalistic, and numerological symbolism can go a long way with Reed's methods.
While the book is kind of marketed to tarot enthusiasts and readers of all skill levels, I would recommend it for intermediate readers. If you're a beginner with no experience; Start with Papus (Tarot of the Bohemians), A. E. Waite (Pictorial Guide to the Tarot), and A. E. Thierens (The General Book of Tarot). You don't have to memorize those books, but they're a good foundation, and this book will be so much more valuable.
A great book for a reader at any level. I've been reading for over 10 years and while there was a lot of beginner information I found some of her insights to be pretty interesting and useful. I also am not a reader who uses reversals (I was when I started, but I find that my readings are much clearer without them) but this book gave a much clearer explanation of them than any other author I've seen. So many times they just say "the energy is blocked" or "it's the opposite" when none of the cards are fully black or white so what do you mean by opposite??? Some cards are already dual in nature so I always had a hard time understanding what people meant by this. I think this book could be useful to any type of reader as the author is very accepting of the fact that there are as many ways to read as there are tarot readers. I also found the chapters on how to start a business reading tarot to be very interesting even though I'm not planning on doing that.
I recommend this book for anyone who is learning Tarot, beginners and experts alike. Theresa is my absolute favorite Tarot teacher, and has earned her place among experts like Rachel Pollack and Mary K. Greer. The book is very well organized, and provides clear meanings for every card, as well as alternative meanings and reversals.
If you are just starting to learn Tarot, this book is perfect! I use it as a reference for almost all of my readings, especially while I am still familiarizing myself with the cards. The exercises are very intuitive and helpful. It's an essential for any Tarot reader's bookshelf.
5 stars for an excellent tarot reference book. I think this would be great for beginners, and I think it covers a broader range of topics than the usual beginners books, for example - practical advice on how to start a tarot business. Theresa presents the high level intro to tarot, card meanings and how to embody the energy of each card, and two spreads - past, present, future and the celtic cross. The real delight is the "tarotcises" which focus on practical exercises to get you seeing the connections between the cards.
I was terribly disappointed in this book. Despite the title indicating it is about intuitive reading, over half the book is made up of rote/traditional card meanings that can easily be found on the web or in dozens of other tarot books. The rest of the book did not supply any information that I haven't already found better covered in other books. If you are thinking of getting this book, I would suggest passing it by. Instead, I would recommend The Easiest Way to Learn the Tarot Ever by Dusty White, which I feel is a much better source for learning intuitive tarot reading.
Read ‘em and weep. If you really need to tinder stand what’s going on, or coming on, in the story of your life, then this is book is a good place to start. Written in plainspeak, the author talks you through the practice of tarot like she’s chatting with a colleague during a smoke break between readings.
She does not explain how it works, just how to work it. In fact there is a very practical chapter on how to set up your own fortune telling business.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the cards are telling me that you might too! Maybe. Depends.
I’m a professional reader in part from the guidance and wisdom Theresa has shared through her books, website and podcast through the years. With tarot you never stop learning, and Theresa’s guidance is clear, concise and never obtuse or overly esoteric. I loved this book, it both refreshed my existing knowledge and offered new takes and twists I’ve found incredibly helpful. Long live T! Long may she reign.
I am an avid follower of Theresa on Instagram. Theresa makes tarot accessible to everyone. With this book, she is able to translate her years of experience as a tarot reader into a teaching guide not just for learning tarot but creating a practice with it as well. Her "Tarotcises" are fun and enlightening. She is easily able to convey her wisdom in an honest yet cautionary way. It is a must have reference for tarot readers.
This is a real gem with fun anecdotes to go along with a completely thorough explanation of the cards, spreads, “tarotcises,” and even the how-to of going pro. Like the work of Mary K. Greer, I know this is something I’ll be coming back to again and again. I wish I’d had it 15 years ago when I got my first deck, but I’m delighted it’s here now. Thank you, Theresa!
This book gives so much practical advice and really takes the anxiety out of reading tarot! Theresa's voice throughout the book offers a lightness to learning the theory and compels you to finish! Upon finishing the book I feel very confident to go forth with my practice and I look forward to picking up any future books Theresa puts out! NOW TO ORDER A MINI TAROT DECK!!!! 🙌🏽
