70 disgraceful, pathetic, talentless FOOLS trying to take down one GOD at the same time.
Speaking of epic fails.

"Why continue to create this heap of corpses? Create corpses... that's an odd way to put it."

Now that I'm thinking about it, this must be the goriest Vagabond volume ever! And I just lost all the tiniest respect I had left for Yoshioka school. 70 against 1 is just unreasonable, but I already assumed tens of deaths before I opened this volume though. Seijuro and Denshichiro fought admirably for Yoshioka just for these thoughtless 70 samurai to taint their honor. Stupid 70 samurais, the lot of you!

Also, I love the cat and rats imagery, and the river flow symbolism. Inoue never fails to bring his best stroke forward in every action sequence. I adore this volume!!

Vagabond Volume 26

Oh, to weld such a weapon once more.... The samurai sword was the most lethal weapon, until gunpowder. I so enjoyed the scene in "Pulp Fiction", when Bruce Willis is search for the right weapon in the pawn shop. He ends up choosing a samurai sword. I cheered-disturbing the fellow patrons, that fine afternoon in Walnut
Creek. Also ruined my date, by telling him I have cleaned up brains too!

Well back to the review-there are lots of blood, brains, and all sort of body parts flying about in this issue.
Musashi as taken on 70 angry samurai by himself, and e is covering the field with corpses. Many would believe this is just fantasy, never could happen! Well, the samurai sought to reach this level of fighting-books record techniques to do so, centuries old. The sword is such an amazing weapon, and art form form to hold in ones hands. I do not speak of the crap sold at comic conventions, and the internet. The real blades, that are signed on their tangs, then had the signatures inlaid with gold. Blades that have know history and tasted blood. I was so lucky to grow-up in a poor family, that went to flea markets to make ends meet. 1960's-70's Chicago bloomed with markets, and treasures were found. I have had the great honor of holding samurai swords-amazing weapons still. They have long been lost to me though, but not the memories of holding one in my hands.
Yes, at true piece of art, created to kill cleanly as possible.

The characterization that has happened in this fight is outstanding! Characters with no name get little moments to "shine", Kyoto waking up while a battle of blood and hell goes on outside of their city. Musashi being in the flow of absolutely shredding them while starting to realize the bloodbath he is doing right there......Art was once again out of this world.

The only way to take down an invincible warrior in direct combat is to use bows and arrows, you fools! Not one of this 70 so-called samurais has read Vinland Saga! =))

This was such a mouth watering event , 1 man vs 70 and it was as awesome as expected , whereas we also delved into the necessity or lack thereof killings and the true meaning of live as we also saw how honor is thrown away by man in power to ensure they remain on top . It was a dark tale , it was fantastic battle and it was introspective all at once

“One thing's for sure; I just cut down your leader. Do you choose to go on? Or do I have to cut down all 70 of you?”

“Must keep calm. Make the ego fade. It doesn't matter how many I cut down, whether I win or lose. Have no aspirations for the future. Lean neither forward nor backwards. Repeat this moment of the present over and over again.”

Blood and gore.

The whole fight is a rather silly affair. The Yoshioka samurais are made to look incredibly incompetent and dumb. And maybe they were, but it doesn't explain why they're acting so strange.

Alright, they were taught to put everything they have into the sword. But it's something learned, not intuitive. Men are dropping like flies, yet no one decides to desert, or stop launching at Musashi with such an abandon. Why? When you see your comrades being chopped to bits, shouldn't your survival instincts kick in? You'd think that at least some of the guys would succumb to the flight reaction, like Matahachi usually does. But no, they all fight. Some of the dudes seem to even realise they're being treated like cannon fodder by their leaders, and yet they still plunge themselves into the meat grinder.

Maybe I'm ignorant, maybe samurais were really attached to their codes to such an extent that it took precedence over their basic human nature. To me this whole battle just felt very unrealistic and absurd. And even if it was exactly intended to be this way, so that Musashi realises the pointlessness of his pursuit, I'm somewhat unimpressed.

It's a bloodbath that is designed both as an allegory and Musashi's XP farm. It gives me this feeling of "now, my dear protagonist, I shall put you to the test and unleash upon you a mass attack of 70 clumsy samurais, because at this point your arc requires you to accomplish some major feat".

Musashi cutting through Yoshioka chumps like butter over and over as they keep swarming him, only to realize that his life as a swordsman is all about cutting through lives over and over again in quick succession, is great. Everyone is so desperate, to kill Musashi or for Musashi himself wanting to survive and stay 'in the moment' enough to finish the battle. There's lots of great action shots here and just as I think I'm getting numb to it, things start changing.
