Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

As a big fan of the show, I felt inclined to go back and read the source material hoping I would love it just as much. Well I hoped. Maybe if I read this without watching the show, I could have enjoyed it a bit more. It took me a while to go through this first omnibus (and I have the first 6 omnibus...rookie mistake to buy the series without testing the water first!). I kept telling myself, the payoff is coming...its coming...just keep going...and...no. The story lines between the show and books do run in parallel with some differences of course. I prefer the choices the show runners made over Kirkman's. That said, I do plan to read the next omnibus, because hey, I already have it. If I'm not into by then, well you'll see a lot of 6 books on sale on eBay soon enough.

I will say it took me a bit to get into Kirkman's other series, Invincible. Didn't really connect initially but now I'm hooked. Hoping its the same here!

I've heard that narratives of zombie apocalypse fulfill our secret wishes to kill friends, family, and neighbors (not to mention strangers). Let me also add that those in the vein of American "survival horror" seem also to mirror, grotesquely, foundational narratives of exploration and colonization. That is, the post-apocalyptic landscape is a defamiliarized landscape, one where dominant social structures have broken down and previous methods of knowing and mapping space are no longer relevant. Through the apocalyptic fog the American landscape again becomes a vast frontier which settlers explore for resources and possible homesteads while fighting back the indigenous savages (zombies) and giving birth to new forms of small group government. In that way, its exciting. We love frontiers, and the characters who are most successful recognize "that things will never go back to the way there were." We hate thinking about social relationship in non-dystopian apocalyptic settings. Plus, this graphic novel makes shotguns and axes look pretty cool too. Wait, I forget to talk about the novel itself...

I had read these as trade paperbackes when they first came out. Before the TV series, and I didn`t really get hooked. I don`t even know what I did with the trades afterwards, I only know I don`t have them anymore.

Obviously, I`ve watched the TV series from its beginning and have liked it very much... I did get hooked on that one.

So, I thought I`d give the comic another try. And, what the hey, may as well splurge and get the Omnibus hardcovers while I`m at it, right?

I liked it, firstly beacuse of the presentation, an over-sized hardcover that comes in a nice slipcase always looks good on the shelves. But also, the story and the art are pretty darned good... although they both do tend to have their ups and downs. Still, they kept me hooked and "interested" enough for me to have just ordered the Second Volume.

The TV series is better, but then again, it is easier to put in much more material in a 45 minute show than it is in a couple of graphic novels. The graphic novels do come off as a "condensed" version of the TV series though. And you do get more attached to the characters on TV than in the GNs. For instance, I did have a hard time following just who was who in the GN, they are much easier to identify (with?) on TV.

The GNs and the TV series do parallel themselves, but a few twists and turns do come off differently from one to the other. I do enjoy the TV version better, but am looking forward to reading the next chapters.

Being a huge fan of the show, I wanted to see how the original writing started and how the show writers followed and deviated from the comics. My dislikes were that the comics are much more crude, crass, and unnecessarily violent. I did like the change in relationships and how people worked together differently, and the comics have a different creepiness feel than you get watching it on TV. Overall, I prefer the show, and probably will not finish out the comic book series.

I hate the fact that there isn’t any legal way to watch the original Dawn of the Dead ever since Zack Snyder made his dogshit remake. The original one came out in 1978 by the OG himself, George Romero, and it isn’t really a horror movie. It’s barely a zombie movie, as they take up very little runtime, and a lot of it is just to show they’re still around (and some fun bits, like rednecks throwing a barbecue and shooting zombies as they slowly approach, hooting and cheering as each shot lands). The movie is a black mirror of sorts, but not in the way you’d think. The protagonists have holed themselves up in a shopping mall that somehow never runs out of electricity, and spend months with every form of entertainment they could possibly want and more food than they’ll ever need. They get bored, restless, and ultimately try to suppress the savagery dwelling in their gradually all-consuming id. When humans want for nothing and there’s no society to speak of, we become monsters. Not zombies—they’re stupid, slow, and otherwise docile until they sense food. No; humans are way worse than the zombies.

And that’s about how The Walking Dead plays out, too. Sort of. Here though, the zombies are an ever-present danger, escaping them an almost Sisyphusian pursuit, and the stress of it all might drive you to the edge. Hell is still other people, too, but now it’s a bunch of desperate people perpetually on the brink of a psychological break, who may also have long-held grudges and no laws holding them back. The land itself may even be inhospitable, depending of it’s a city, or the dead of winter, or miles and miles of nothing but open roads. Our characters have been dropped in a pressure cooker at maximum temperature, and they’re desperately trying to keep the lid on from the inside. What a shitshow. Can’t wait to read more.

I watch the show and like it, but I really, really did not like this book. The misogyny is through the roof, and the characters are one-dimensional. The portrayal of women is unrealistic, not to mention most of the women characters are interchangeable. It's difficult to tell the difference between Andrea and Carol. Not to mention that it's ok for the men to bad mouth the women and call them names, yet none of the women stand up for themselves. I particularly don't like the dynamic between Andrea and Allen. He calls her names when she tells him that he needs to be there for his kids, but when Rick does it, he's accepting of the advice. All the women are bad mouthed by the men and no one says or does anything about it. It seemed like every time I turned a page someone else was having sex, and it portrays all the women, except Lori and Donna (minor spoiler), as forthcoming and lustful. And I really don't understand Michonne's character. Instead of gaining the trust of the group, she throws herself at Tyreese knowing that he and Carol are together!? It only adds the notion that women are evil temptresses that need to be kept in line. In my opinion, the show presents a much more believable and identifiable portrayal of women.

Bottom line, if I would have read this first, I never would have watched the show for fear that it would be just as bad.

✨🚪 “The end of the world doesn’t start with screams. It starts with a door that no one opens.” ✨

4.9 out of 5 Locked Gun Cabinets

Best for: Readers ready to commit. Not to a story, but to a world that will take everything you love and ask you to keep going anyway.
Skip if: You can’t handle slow burns or fast deaths. This book will test your heart’s survival instinct.

Omnibus Volume 1 is The Walking Dead stripped to its raw bones. No spinoffs, no time jumps, no fan theories—just the beginning, in all its quiet horror. Rick wakes up alone. He doesn’t scream. He walks. That silence sets the tone.

You watch a camp form. You watch it fall. You meet Hershel, Andrea, Lori, Glenn, Carl, Carol, Shane—all still pretending they're in a world that can be managed. And then the comic tears off the illusion.

By the time they reach the prison, they’re not a group. They’re ghosts sharing food.

Adlard takes over from Tony Moore halfway, shifting the tone visually from cinematic to stark. The art evolves the same way the story does: it stops holding your hand.

This is where it all begins. The trauma. The leadership. The moral rot. The humanity. It’s not a book. It’s the blueprint for the rest of the collapse.

I got this book years ago as a christmas gift but never finished it, so I decided to start from the beginning and read it all the way through. This book was pretty good and had great plot twists and character development, as someone who has been a fan of The Walking Dead TV show for years now finally starting the comics is amazing and gives you a look at this story from a different perspective, you can see where the show got a lot of it’s inspiration from and even gave characters who weren’t in the book characteristics of some who didn’t make it to the screen. Overall an amazing read.

I admit 5 stars is a little much and mostly nostalgia based, but I can’t help it. Iconic characters. Iconic moments. This is where I fell in love with it and there’s good reason for it. It’s got heart in the writing. It’s got artwork that brings you in. I got chills when we were introduced to specific locations because what happens there later is forever engraved in my mind. These stories have long lasting impressions and I love that.

But now looking at it from an adult female’s perspective, I can admit what it DOESN’T have is good female characters. Sadly all the women are portrayed as bitches, crazy, sex pieces, or some combination of the three. I remember strong women in this series. Where are they??

3,5 estrellas.

I loved the show, so I wanted to read the comics. This went to issue 24 and was amazing. Comics move way faster than shows, especially having 2 years of comics in one collection. It seems super fast. It was different than the show, but in a way I appreciated and was hoping for.

Really good stuff. I devoured all 1080 pages in a day and thought it excellent until the final 200 pages or so when it became a bit too much. I don't mind the violence, but it just seemed excessive in the end.

So good that got me into the graphic novels as a medium. Fantastic story and setting, fast pacing, great characters. I quickly grew to love the black and white art. Definitely a must read!
