Shortbread Cottage (bakery/coffeehouse) owner Lisa Kincaid is a widow raising her four-year-old son Jamie. Her husband (James) died in an accident a few years ago, and construction company owner (hero) Kevin Decker feels somewhat responsible since her husband was an employee of his, and Kevin was there when the accident happened. So, through the years, he has been keeping a watch over Lisa and her son, and visits her bakery Shortbread Cottage mostly every day. Friendship eventually turns into romance, but Lisa is unsure if she wants to get involved again.
This was a pleasant (if sometimes bland) romance. I liked the hero Kevin, he was obviously smitten with Lisa for years and got on well with her small son. The title of this book, “The Littlest Matchmaker", is misleading because Jamie never did any matchmaking and he was hardly in the first seventy pages of the book. The story's focus was more on the romance between the main couple. This was an okay read.

"I liked listening to you talk to Jamie. You're a good mom," he said.
She took a small sip from her glass, then gave a diffident shrug. "I'm what I have to be."
This book is so fucking weird. It's mainly the heroine. I can't understand her words, her actions, her sexuality, or her 'emotions' if she even has any.
The hero is a normal guy. In construction, loving, kind, straightforward.
The heroine is like an extraterrestrial. She's like an unblinking insect. I was unable to understand even her most basic motivations.
...he should have skipped the sushi and hired an interpreter of female nuance instead. He understood the words coming from her mouth; the subtext was totally another issue.
You're not alone, man. I can't make any sense out of her, either. It's not like she runs hot and cold, more like lukewarm and cold.
He tries so hard to be sweet and patient but she is just either whacked out or another species.
She's very cold, clinical, closed-off and unfeeling. She doesn't seem human at all. And Kevin notices that she's been weak, frail, sick, pale, and miserable for the last few months. I thought this was going to be explained. She's ill? She's... molting? IDK, some sort of explanation, but Kelly gives us NOTHING. At the end of the book we still have no idea what - if anything - is going on with her health.
HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?
Barely described - which usually would piss me off, but for once I am grateful. She creeps me out. I was like, "No, don't put your dick in her! Run away!"
And her sexuality is so bizarre. At some times she acts like an aggressive, hungry sexual beast who makes cold, hard decisions on sex based solely on her body's needs and not her emotions (still doubt she has any emotions). Like in SPECIES or something.
At other times, she says stuff like she's never had sex with anyone other than her dead husband, and weirdly goes from aggressive to super-shy in bed for no reason, completely randomly, in a way that makes no sense.
She reached for the sheet, but Kevin stilled her hand.
"You're beautiful."
She turned her face away. "No. Compared to you, I'm out of shape and - "
He put a finger beneath her chin and brought her back so that her eyes had to meet his. "You're beautiful. Inside and out, every day, you are beautiful. Don't hide yourself.
Normally I would either be celebrating how kind and patient he was with her in bed. Or praising her for being sexually aggressive (because at points in the novel she is just like "I have to fuck" and "How can I politely tell him that we are going to fuck now?") but given the book as a whole my instinct is just to tell him to run for the hills. She is creepy and IMO bad news. Stay far away from her and definitely don't put your penis anywhere near her.
Now he's going to be saddled with her and her son (possible alien spawn?) for life.
Tl;dr - Creepy heroine. o.O She really weirded me out and I didn't enjoy this book at all. I wanted the hero to run away and never have to see her alien face again.

one of the best of this genre
I've read a batch lately (clearing off the shelves) that have characters I really didn't like. So annoying I either didn't care what happened to them or wished bad things on them.
Liked these folks a lot.
Not a heavy read, not a long read, but a truly enjoyable read.
