She's concentrating on her daughters and her business--and on convincing her ex-husband that their marriage really is over. Even if she was looking, it wouldn't be at a man like Sheriff Jack Murray.
She knows Jack's a good cop, a good man...one she can count on. She still figures she'll be better off with a quiet, gentle--maybe even slightly boring--guy. She's already had enough excitement to last her a lifetime.
But before long, Jack has her thinking that his kind of excitement is exactly what she needs.
Janice Kay Johnson is the author of over a hundred books for children and adults. Her first four published romance novels were coauthored with her mother, also a writer who has since published mysteries and children's books on her own. These were "sweet" romance novels, the author hastens to add; she isn't sure they'd have felt comfortable coauthoring passionate love scenes!
Janice graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. in history and then received a master's degree in library science from the University of Washington. She was a branch librarian for a public library system until she began selling her own writing.
She has written six novels for young adults and one picture book for the read-aloud crowd. Rosamund was the outgrowth of all those hours spent reading to her own daughters, and of her passion for growing old roses. Two more of her favorite books were historical novels she wrote for Tor/Forge. The research was pure indulgence for someone who set out intending to be a historian!
Janice is divorced and has raised her two daughters in a small, rural town north of Seattle, Washington. She's an active volunteer and board member for Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter, and foster kittens often enliven a household that already includes a few more cats than she wants to admit to!
Janice loves writing books about both love and family — about the way generations connect and the power our earliest experiences have on us throughout life. Her Superromance novels are frequent finalists for Romance Writers of America RITA® awards. Along with her books for Harlequin, Janice has written the Cape Trouble series of romantic suspense novels, and is about to launch a new series, Desperation Creek, set in rural eastern Oregon.
Beth Sommers is divorced, has two young daughters, and an ex-husband who is going off the deep end because he cannot accept that the marriage is over. One night, when Beth’s ex causes a disturbance at her house, Sheriff Jack Murray comes to the rescue. Beth finds herself attracted to Jack but wonders if she can ever trust another man.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read with lots of drama throughout. I really liked Jack. He was a very protective hero and was always there for Beth and her daughters when they needed him. Beth sometimes got on my nerves though, with how she was too quick to distrust Jack at times. On the plus side, she was a very good mother, always looking out for her daughters’ best interests first and foremost. Her ex-husband made the story a lot more interesting as he tried to make Beth pay for breaking up the family. This story really held my interest and there never seemed to be a dull moment.
I didn't expect this book from the Patton's Daughters series to be my favorite, but it was. Jack was such a complex character as throughout the series he went through growth, change, and became a strong, vibrant person. Flawed but determined to be the best version of himself, I enjoyed his interactions with all the other characters in the Patton family and with his new love, Beth and her family.
Really wanted to slap the love interest. Her ex was more interesting, at least he knew he had a problem and tried to change. She had no faith in Jack or trust.
