Rate this book
A MAN'S PROMISE — Ever since he'd been a boy of eleven, Captain Cord Meredith had kept his vow to his father that he would protect and defend little Jahane Beaudette, exiled princess of the island kingdom of Balmarhea. The rugged, seafaring Cord had never gone hack on his word and now, after a long voyage, was returning to visit the mischievous blond imp who'd become his foster sister. But instead of the doll-toting scamp he'd left behind, the virile male found a luscious, voluptuous nymph who tempted him to forget all about protection and think only of passion!

A WOMAN'S DESIRE

With her delicate features and unshakable confidence, there was no doubt the breathtaking Jahane was anything but royalty. And even though she'd been very young when she fled her palace, Jahane knew she must think first of her people. Then the child became a woman, a gorgeous, sensuous beauty who dreamed of loving her rescuer, Cord Meredith. But before she could submit to the indescribable ecstasy she could share only with Cord, Jahane had to decide: to fulfill the destiny of her birthright and reign as queen, or to relinquish her throne and rule just Cord's heart as the PIRATE'S PRINCESS

In 1842, in the mythical island kingdom of Balmarhea, a good king is overthrown by his wicked brother and all but the king's youngest brother (the Archbishop), and the king's children, his 11 year old son and 3-year-old daughter, Jahane, are killed. Jahane is smuggled away to live in America, her life saved by the sacrifice of an American sea captain. The young princess worships the sea captain's young son, Cord Meredith, who swore an oath to his dying father to protect her.

I wouldn't call this a pirate romance, despite the title, which is misleading. After all, there are no pirates involved. Still it's a good story, and the relationship with Jahane and Cord is believable. She never stops loving him though he breaks her heart a few times with the best of motives. The most endearing character was the Archbishop Serafimo whose clever mind and actions manage to hold the world of Balmarhea--and the novel--together.

In the last quarter of the book, there were some issues that distracted from what was otherwise a great story: (1) at p. 290 the heroine suddenly turns stupid, submitting (without screaming or fighting) to an abduction. Why do some authors do that? (2) Alexander's mistrust of Byrnn had no foundation and, given all knew she was loyal to him, seemed contrived just to produce tension. If the author wanted that result, she could have found a better way. It made Alexander look like a cad. (3) if all Alexander had to do to make it right for Cord and Jahane to marry was to knight him, why wasn't that option mentioned when Cord and Jahane first expressed their desire to wed? Suddenly pulling that option out of thin air just wasn't believable. (4) Cord has to drink in order to make love to Jahane...what? It was a misstep in the flow of things that wasn't needed and, again, it seemed contrived. Finally, the love scenes were disappointing and unrealistic since virgins were involved.

I would have given this story 4 and ½ stars but for the issues I noted. As it is, I'm giving it 3 and ½ stars. If you don't mind the issues, I can recommend it. The ending was a good one.

One of the first romance novels I have ever read. It is a love story with a bit of mystery and suspense and a revenge twist added to it. Typical romance novel, maybe even formulaic but still fun to read.

The main characters Jahane and Cord, were quite boring with their should-we-or-should-we-not love story. I don't know but I got more satisfaction in the relationship of the secondary characters, Prince Alexander and Brynn and I wish their story could have been expounded further. ;p

The story can sometimes be dragging especially when Cord and Jahane are involved (or i don't know if it's just me) but still this is one of my favorite historical romance (yeah, because of prince Alexander)

I really liked this book once I got over my own weirdness about them having grown up together. That's just my own personal issue. The book had a very cool story with a lot of other deep characters.Had some sad parts. Just an overall nice read. Much better than some romances I've read.

The beginning of this book had me at the edge of my seat. Heart pounding, filled with dread and anxiety. It was a fun quick read . Although the heroine did get on my nerves a few times. Good book, personally I wouldn’t read again.

Cannot remember how many times I have read this story. Jahane shows strength and bravery in the face of learning about her true identity and helping to heal a nation. And it is a good love story.

3.5. This was a fast paced story. Started off kind of depressing and got a lot better. I do not understand why "Pirate's" in the title. Had nothing to do with that at all. Sensuality= Warm.
