Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. If I read this without the audiobook, I might have been bald from the number of times I was pulling my hair; or rather, have a bump the size of my head from the number of times I hit my skull out of frustration. If you're wondering why in the world this received 3 stars when it sounds like I loathe it, it's because I'm feeling generous and I'm a sucker for a good ending, and as long as the magic of that last few chapters linger, I would try to keep the bald spots I've gained away from my mind. I literally write this review the second I finished to keep the magic alive.

The book is about a couple, Wulfric and Milisant, who had been betrothed since they were a child. When they first met, she had set her hunting bird on him and he accidentally pushed her aside, breaking her foot. Both of them received a significant injury and they had hated each other since. When the time came when he was supposed to fetch her for the wedding, she demanded time to get to know each other (in the hopes the wedding will get called off). But during this time, someone was trying to murder Milisant.

Let's just say I have been dreading this book. But since I ran out of books to read for this week, I had no choice but to endure it. When I said I hated enemies-to-lovers, this is exactly what I meant. They truly, truly, hated one another because of that first meeting. I really hated how they immediately dislike one another from the get-go. Every time they insult one another, I looked away from the book and hit it over my head, letting the audiobook continue while I seethe with annoyance.

Milisant is a tomboy. She likes to wear leggings and likes to go hunting. Wulfric didn't like this and had given her rules to follow while also berating her for being herself. Mili was no better. She had a strong prejudice against him since the start, insulting him every time a chance presented itself. She keeps insulting him when he was just keeping her safe from harm. Needless to say, for the first half, I hated the both of them equally. Because of that, I wasn't overly invested in their relationship and I guess that's what makes this book reasonable. How could I ship a couple when the basis of their relationship is lies, secrecy, skepticism, and hatred?

So it's not surprising that when it comes to the romance part, I would say: Behold! The field in which I grow my fucks... Lay thine eyes upon it and thou shall see it is barren. In other words:

Their hatred towards one another has blinded them of common sense. This had been shown by Milisent's reckless decisions. WHY oh WHY when HR books needed conflicts it is always the girl doing stupid things?? Wulfric, who has been an absolute rat in the beginning, started getting better at being a decent man. He had transformed from an ape to a human male that has brains. And Milicent as time goes on, grew a brain of her own.

I distinctly remember when they grew their brains (which is just them having a normal conversation, discussing the conflict). It was chapter 39 when they started having common sense and talking as normal people would- putting aside their hatred for once. That conversation made me so relieved I went back and read it again to savor their fading stupidity. THEY ARE in the process of GETTING CURED of idocy! Since that chapter, everything started to look good. I even found their occasional jealousy cute.

After their marriage, the book actually transformed into a decent romance book! If ever re-read this I would actually just skip to the second half. That last few chapters were such delight, with Wulfric accepting her as she was and Milisant having a brain and grew an ear to listen, they had a wonderful relationship. They literally became a good couple so quick and it's all because of their trust in one another. They were no longer jealous and... get this... they actually listen to reason. WOW! Who would've thought communicating could solve such problems? (Literally anyone with brain) But because they've just gotten their brain a few chapters ago, I'll forgive their absence of common sense.

because I am fair, I wouldn't forget the great deal of resentment I felt at the beginning, shown by the pain I now felt on my head, i wouldn't be surprised if I found bald-spots. I wouldn't forgive that first part easily, but I wouldn't forget the magic of the last few chapters either. So here I am, deciding 3 should do well enough and that's that.

P.S. please note that I am a dramatic person; and no, I do not have bald spots.

I found the storyline interesting from the beginning with King John and the slighted lord who wished to prevent Millicent and Wulf’s families from joining. I loved Millicent and Wulf, and the hatred between them was only the culmination of several misunderstandings, the first of which took place when they were children. Betrothed at a young age both Wulf and Mili are less then excited to marry. They met once as children and it was such a disaster that neither has forgotten. Milisant is such a good character, as is Wulfric. I love their sparks together from the very beginning. From early on in the book when Mili is so difficult and putting up a struggle to everything Wulfric does, that was amusing. Beautiful Milisant Crispin and handsome, arrogant Wulfric, the future Earl of Shefford, are engaged-and seldom has a betrothed couple been less suited. Her father has decreed that Milisant has a month to accustom herself to the future earl before the marriage takes place. As the time dwindles, Milisant desperately searches for a way out. But Wulfric is falling under a spell himself, cast by the proud, strong woman who will be pledged to him against her will in a few short days. They only med once when they were children and her bird attacked Wulfric who accidently killed it when her threw it off him. Milisant has never forgotten the incident, and when she finds she is betrothed to that awful boy who is now a man, and a handsome one, she balks. It was a good read, smooth and the dialogue was believable but the conflict between the H/h was a little overblown and it seemed Milisant (the Heroine) was a little too bitter and resentful. I could not wait to see what was going to happen next between Milisant and Wulfric. Some of the Characters such as Neil (Milisant's father) had interesting little quirks that just make them more likable.

I wasn’t initially planning to read Joining because of all the bad reviews I read, but I decided to give it a try. I know a lot of people complained there wasn’t much sex in this book and they didn’t like the characters, but I must disagree. Excellent read. Love Johanna Lindsey's books! So I'm neither keen on reviewing books, nor am I good at it. So I'm gonna do this as easy as possible, for me that is. Be warned though, it CONTAINS SPOILERS! Also English is not my first language, so please excuse any grammar and/or spelling errors I might have made. The whole story line in this book was better and it keeps you in suspense. It was a little predictable, but that's OK because it's a historical romance and they're all supposed to be semi-predictable anyway. I really enjoyed getting to know the main characters and enjoyed having a strong female. I'm not really sure why I liked the book, I think it was a combination of the writing, the characters, the plot, and honestly some of the humor. Half way through the book I just wanted to slap some sense into heroine. Then I would remember she was only eighteen and this was actually normal behavior. I had trouble putting this book down as it was a very fast read with interesting characters.

I couldn't get through this book without wanting to slap Millicent. She is childish, bitter, and, an all around nasty young female. Wulf could have, and, should have, found a better woman to marry than this irritating witch. I had to put the book down in the middle of reading it, I couldn't take Millicent anymore. I was very disappointed in this book, I usually enjoy a Johanna Lindsey book, but, this proved to be the exception. I would not recommend this book, try another of her books, leave this one in the store, or, library.

Looks like I originally gave this 3 stars but unfortunately since I never reviewed anything back in the day when I marked all these read.. I have no idea why. I would have love to see my thoughts back then. I do feel after reading this again that 3 stars is pretty accurate though so I'm leaving my rating. While I loved the first book in this series book 2 here.. Well lets just say that while once again the accurate historical figures and even some events made me super excited, it was incredibly hard to fall in love with these 2 characters. Both the FMC, Millicent, and Wulfric our MMC were incredibly hostile, both in general and to each other. Its amazing we wound up with the ending we did instead of some sort of double murder lol. The overly hostile nature of both characters made it difficult to really fall into the story and just get lost.

Wulfric and Millicent have been afianced since childhood.. and have hated each other just as long. This is one of those stories that follows that "Great Misunderstanding" line where if these two weren't so incredibly stubborn and holding on to their hate with all their strength then this story may never have happened. The day comes when Wulfric's father insists he go to get his bride to be. Wulfric arrives to find his wife is a veritable harridan.. Wulfric, none to pleased, sets out to make her life as miserable as his is. Little do they both know that people in high places don't want them to marry either, but instead of encouraging the dislike they set out to kill or kidnap Millicent which ends up having the opposite effect than they intended.

I still liked it.. but this may be one of my least favorite books of Johanna Lindsey's. It is probably also one of the books I have read the least over the years. That being said I do love that we got cameo's from Reina and Ranulf and I'm pretty sure the next in this series is about their son. I can't remember the circumstance or plot but I remember liking it. I'm excited to read the next one for the memory refresher.

"Joining" is the story of Milisant and Wolfric.

Wulfric de Thorpe and Milisant Crispin have been betrothed since they were 3 with their fathers being close friends, and hated each other for almost all their lives as a childhood squabble led them to injuring one another and him killing her pet.
As they encroach adulthood, the pressure of their impending nuptials mounds from both their families, and Wolfric is forced to go fetch his unwilling bride..
While she views him as a brute, he views her as a non-feminine insubordinate exasperation, but their efforts of thwarting the marriage goes awry as her life is targeted by the enemies.
We have twin drama, animal love, lusty kings, supportive parents as well as main characters bantering like children. Their "love" story took second seat to their verbal sparring, and whatever passion could happen did at the very end.
I dont mind a "masculine" or to be accurate, unconventional "non feminine" heroine- but I wish the hero appreciated the same as much instead of confessing initial attraction to Jhone.
Atleast we got to see the HEA of Reina and Ranulf.

What worked for me :

This story was loosely inspired by The Taming of the shrew and the execution was splendid.
Wulfric and Milsant had a hate to love relationship.
Wulfric was wary of Milsant and she had a real reason for being scared of him.
The conversations between Wulfric and his father, Milisant and her sister made me look like a member of the cast of Looney Tunes.
Wulfric was shrewd, kind and protective. He went the extra mile to build their relationship when he learned about her fear.
Milisant had a soft spot for animals and had an unusual pet collection.
They both were confused by their attraction to each other.
The murder attempts added tension and a neat mystery to the story.

What didn't work for me :

Both fathers want to see this marriage happen but are not concerned that the couple has not set eyes on each other in six years.

This book was a classic Johanna Lindsey and perfect for a relaxing weekend.

Was picked for my June 2015 Pick It For Me challenge... 2015 was a terrible year for me and I got behind... still catching up, yes, I'm worse than a snail stuck in molasses...

Finished! I liked it well enough, there's something about the author's style that has me liking it, and yet wanting to roll my eyes at the same time. Now that I've finished this duo, I'm not sure if I will seek out anything else by this author or not. Like I said, I sorta liked her style, and sorta didn't. Definitely reminiscent of something I would've liked better in my younger days, kinda reminds me a bit of Catherine Coulter's style, or something. I liked it, though, don't think I'm complaining, really, but just... I dunno! I am glad that I gave this author a try, she is a classic staple of the genre, after all, and to be honest, I think I do have at least one more book of hers on my gigantic TBR pile, but I'm just in not so much of a rush to get around to it, ifyaknowwhatamean. I will say I liked Defy Not the Heart just a bit better because, well... because... cats! Ha! Though Milisant did have a few pets, a destrier and a falcon and a wolf, and a few other things, so that was cool. Yay, animal friends! :D

I couldn't finish this annoying book.
I gave it 'til over half way (which was more than generous) then rid myself of this source of irritation.

I don't think I will be purchasing another Johanna Lindsay book, unless recommended by a reliable source.

This was a story of a brat and a bully. The character development and interaction was poor and tiresome. I felt like i was reading about 13 year old teens which holds zero interest for me. I have nothing else to say but, don't waste your time on 'dis'joining.

Joining is a really fun and lighthearted read. I always enjoy breaking out this book and revisiting the story of Milisant and Wulfric. However, it's slightly superficial when you really get down to thinking about the details. So even though I really like this book, I'm going to give it a 3 star rating.

Milisant and Wulfric have been engaged since Milisant was born. However, the betrothed couple aren't happy about it. Because of a childhood accident, which they both blame the other for, they've avoided coming into contact with each other for 7 years. But their parents have had enough and force the couple to come together and follow through with the contract. Milisant however, convinces her father to give her a month to get to know Wulfric in order to try to find a way out of their impending marriage. During this time, several attempts are made on Milisant's life, forcing her under Wulfric's constant protection and into his constant presence. Before long, neither one of them are trying quite so hard to find a way out.

I don't typically enjoy books that are set in medieval times. I think I'm more of a Victorian era kind of gal. However, Johanna Lindsey is fantastic at wrapping you up in the characters world and making you laugh, cry, get angry, and want to fight whatever foes are in between the characters finding their happily ever after. She's an expert at spinning tales. The way she wrote the novel, in that medieval language verbiage, made the story even more beautiful and it surprisingly never distracted me from what was happening to the characters, which I have had occur before. Although I can't say this is my favorite novel by Johanna Lindsey, I can't say I regret buying it or having read it a few times either.

I did like the murder plot involved, especially since it included King John (brother of Richard the Lionheart). That was a pretty intriguing situation and I also like the attitude of the leader of the mercenaries because of his heartlessness - he makes it so easy to hate him. The attempts on her kidnapping and/or death really drove the story along because it hindered Milisant from going anywhere she wanted, thus forcing her into more contact with Wulfric.

What I didn't like about this novel is that the characters fall in love extremely fast. They've been betrothed for years but because of a childhood incident, have hated each other for quite awhile now. Then, when Wulfric finally comes to collect his bride (several years past the time when he should've come for her) they're both given a month to get to know each other before the wedding ceremony takes place. During that month, they spend about 2 weeks of that avoiding each other at all costs. So really, they fall in love after 2 weeks of really spending any time at all together. And I'm sorry to say, I'm an incredible skeptic when it comes to love at first sight - or love in 2 weeks either for that matter. It was kind of a buzz kill when I realized how little they knew each other.

I wasn’t initially planning to read Joining because of all the bad reviews I read, but I’m so glad a friend gave me a copy and I decided to give it a try. I found the storyline interesting from the beginning with King John and the slighted lord who wished to prevent Millicent and Wulf’s families from joining. I know a lot of people complained there wasn’t much sex in this book and they didn’t like the characters, but I must disagree. I loved Millicent and Wulf, and the hatred between them was only the culmination of several misunderstandings, the first of which took place when they were children. Millicent thought Wulf was nothing but a brute, but she slowly learns he’s as gentle as Roland, the childhood friend she convinces herself she really wants to marry – only to discover her feelings for him are only brotherly. As if the problems Wulf and Millicent have with each other aren’t enough, they must deal with the bizarre attempts on Millicent’s life and their connection to the king. Yes, the characters do dislike one another (quite strongly) throughout most of the book, but I think it only adds to the buildup of the tension between them. And yes, there really isn’t as much sex in this book as in most Lindsey books, but I think it’s worth the wait at the end when they finally do come together in the marriage bed.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and hated to put it down!

Copyright 1999. A frequent reread for me. This is book 2 of the Shefford Knight series. Wulfric is Guy's son.
I gave Defy Not The Heart (book 1) 5 stars. This one isn't as good. Ranulf & Reina make only a brief appearance. The year is 1214.

What I liked - the hero, Wulfric is a good guy. True hero material. The story, once it gets going, isn't bad.

What I didn't like - the heroine Milisant is a whiny baby. She's spoiled & is one of those heroines who wear men's clothes & wish they were men. She hunts & is a better bowman than anyone in England. She ain't marrying ANYONE!

Illogical - When Milisant is 6 years old, 13 year old Ranulf visits & a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING happens. Both of them are hurt. Neither one of them know how much the other is hurt & they each remember a different version of what happened. Milisant breaks her foot & resets the bone HERSELF!!! SIX years old!!!! Yeah right.

The cover - Boring light green, with a line of flowers. TURN THE PAGE! There it is - bodice ripping cover! Milisant is wearing some kind of loose blue dress that bares her shoulders. She's lifting the dress to expose one naked thigh. She looks like she's already orgasming. It's not a good look.
Ranulf is bare chested (!), barely touching Milisant. He's got on black leather pants, a large gold belt & a black cape! He also looks like he's wearing eye shadow.
The castle is in the background & there's snow on the ground.

Good writing as far as wording is concerned. However, I guess I am getting too old for these childish characters. Also it became kind of boring reading the same "relationship counseling" theme again and again from almost all major charters to both H and h.
There is also a staring at you character inconsistency with h'`s sister Jhon: she is described as a nini who is afraid of men and faints when a man merely scolds her. Yet she had already had a very happy marriage behind her. She has managed a large castle as the responsible sister. She is the healer, and on top of that she is so wise in her advise to her sister on how to handle men in general and the hero in particular. How come this strong woman is so afraid of men?

The problem with the enemies-to-lovers trope is that the characters often hold grudges for unimportant reasons, for an unreasonable length of time, despite all of the reasons that they should just get over themselves — leaving the whole “enemy” premise feeling super-contrived. That’s what happened here. Both characters were extremely annoying and unlikeable and I wanted to slap the heroine multiple times. The transition to “lovers” felt forced and unnatural.

Unfortunately I didn't absolutely love my first Johanna Lindsay. I found the hero demanding and the heroine annoying. However, it did keep me engaged and I was interested to see how the story would resolve. I'm finding medieval romance isn't really my thing, in general.

I remember enjoying Johanna Lindsey books a long time ago. This was still a wonderful read.

I enjoyed the characters and the conflict but at times the heroine was just too ridiculous.

One of my favorite romances yet! ❤️ I really enjoyed both characters and their timeline felt very realistic. I also liked the mystery subplot, and I will be reading more Johanna Lindsey works!

It's been a long time since I read a Johanna Lindsay book. I did read a great many of her books throughout the eighties and into the early nineties, by which time I had started to really notice some of her standard plot tricks and the patterns she employs in almost every story and I started to get fed up with some of the astoundingly implausible premises she sometimes employs, and I moved away from Lindsay books.

Lately, though, I've been craving a bit of good, old-fashioned, historical romance, and here we are.

As usual, Lindsay's historical setting is well-researched and interesting, and it's communicated effectively (although it's a bit heavy on the explanatory dialogue; I know she prefers dialogue to exposition, but some of the conversations struck me as far too expository and therefore awkward). The characters are pretty much bog standard Lindsay, which is okay (I knew what I was getting into, after all). The heroine is young, sassy, strong-willed, and the hero is a big, strong alpha male, and the heroine, despite her years of outright rebellion and socially inappropriate behaviour, is, ultimately, tamed by love and all is well. Before we get to that ending, of course, there are plot twists (any Lindsay fan will see them coming) and misunderstandings that cause friction and stress but which could have been cleared up with just one decent conversation between the protagonists (another classic Lindsay plot device).

The love scenes were less graphic than I remembered her writing being. Either Lindsay has toned down her style or I've gotten used to reading graphic erotica, but I found them fairly tame and not very explicit. I'd have to go back to earlier books to see if she has actually changed or if I just remember it differently, but she's been writing for a lot of years and I think I just must have perceived things differently way back in the day.

I would call this book predictable, engaging, and very typically Johanna Lindsay, with all the standard plot devices she normally uses. I was not surprised at all by the story, but you know what? I didn't especially want to be. It was everything I expected, and it was exactly what I wanted: historical romance, borderline bodice-ripper (it's not quite a bodice-ripper, though), dominant alpha male and feisty heroine who is tamed by his love.

When you pick up a Johanna Lindsay novel, you know what you're getting. This book did not fail to deliver exactly that. For me, it's kind of comfort-food-brain-candy, and in that capacity, it is perfect.

Finished this 04/13/2023.

England 1214, during the reign of King John
Plantagenet. Rom-mystery.

Nigel Crispen had twin 18 yr. old daughters,
Milisant & Jhone. He'd served in the Holy Land
and returned home a wealthy man. He saved
his friend's life- see below.

Mili felt she should have been born a boy. She
wore boys clothing & mastered a bow & arrow.
She had a pet wolf, hedgehog, etc. She felt
comfortable living this way, into young adult-
hood. Her sister, a widow, preferred feminine
dress & mastered feminine projects.

Nigel saved the life of Guy de Thorpe, an earl.
They agreed his daughter and his son, Wulfric
would wed. Wulf fought on behalf of King John
and therefore was tardy in claiming Mili. (The
MCs had an awkward meeting yrs. ago when
she was 6 & he 13.) Someone wanted to prevent
this marriage.

Mili came across as too distrusting & Wulfric as
too bossy. She assumed b/c he'd been a warrior
that he'd beat his wife and mistreat his horse.
Both overreacted at times. They had interesting
bantering, but after awhile it wore thin. Some
convos became heated. She thought him a
'brute.' I felt something missing.

Excellent read. Love Johanna Lindsey's books!

Betrothed at a young age both Wulf and Mili are less then excited to marry. They met once as children and it was such a disaster that neither has forgotten. But marry they must or bring shame to their families.

Mili is an unique woman that likes the manely pursuits of weaponary, hunting, and men's clothes much to the disgust of Wulf. He would prefer a woman that looks like a woman and not covered in dirt. They clash and discover that there is such passion between them, much to Mili's disgust. Mili tries to come to terms with her attraction and fear for the well built handsome warrior. Fully desiring his soon-to-be-bride and learning the someone is trying to kill her rouses his protectiveness.

Will they kill each other before they admit their love or will someone else silence Mili first?

A charming well written read......another Lindsey Gem. Jammed packed with Lindsey magic, history, powerful knights, passion, and romance......sweet!

A Lindsey book can never be read just once.....

I gotta figure out why I've come to be reading the same book over and over. I mean, the setting changes, some of them are definitely written better than others, and like that. But you have a man, you have a woman, there is something unorthodox about one or both of them, they constantly irritate one another, then they "realize" they love one another.

It's kind of mesmorizing. As well as a weird sort of blankness in my reading cycle, like the blankness between tracks on a CD.

Anyway, I read this one because I read that other book set in a time period just before this one (King Richard, rather than King John), and liked it, and saw this one was by Johanna Lindsay, and just had to know how she'd handle the time period. And you know, she did okay.
