IT'S BEEN A MONTH SINCE THE tragic boat crash in the choppy waters of the Atlantic claimed two lives. The drownings were ruled accidental, and the names of the victims were added to an ever-growing list of teens who have died off the rocky coast of Echo Bay.
Of course, Tenley Reed, Sydney Morgan, and Emerson Cunningham know the truth: This crash was no accident. Determined to find the killer, the girls investigate their enemies and their friends. Could it be the same person who started their twisted game of truth or dare? Everyone is a suspect - because everyone has secrets to hide.
Who's sending the dares? Who's behind the deaths? And will the killer strike again? Secrets and Lies, book two in the Truth or Dare trilogy, will have readers furiously flipping the pages from beginning to end.
Jacqueline Green received her BA from Cornell University and her MFA in writing for children from The New School. She grew up in Wynnewood, PA and now lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and their tiny dog (who sometimes moonlights as her writing companion). Truth or Dare, the first novel in a trilogy, is her young adult debut.
Oh my gosh! The steaks are higher and more victims are popping up!
What the hell?! Okay first of all, I really enjoyed Truth or Dare. The mystery, the romance, the thrill! And I was really looking forward to this book because I wanted answers. But in the end I'm still dazed and confused.
This is like Pretty Little Liars/Get even/Burn for Burn. I know I'm in for some major mystery madness but I can't help but be drawn in.
So this book picks up where Truth or Dare leaves off. The stakes are higher, and the darer is bolder. People are getting hurt, animals die, and gasp! more secrets unfold. I enjoyed this book. But until now my suspect list is still uncertain.
I guess I have to wait for the next book. Hopefully it will be the last because I really do not want another long series like the Pretty Little Liars.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I WILL DIE AFTER ALL THIS I STILL DON"T KNOW WHO THE DARER IS AND THE LAST BOOK ISN"T AVAILABlE AT THE LIBRARY OR ON HOOPLA 😭😭😭😭. This is too suspenseful I can't.
This was a great sequel as it got more dangerous. The girls were truly terrified by the end of this book and another girl was murdered! I like that we only had to follow three perspectives really, though still so sad that Caitlin is dead. I'm glad they brought the kidnapping issue back up and I can't wait to find out why this kidnapper did what they did and why they hate these girls so much. Some of the boy are suspicious, like Calum, so we will see if he has anything to do with it. That was made even more when they found the tracking devices and he is such a techie. I do feel like this was more focused on Tensley and Em, but that was okay. Sydney got some good chapters in, a possible new romance (though he could be a killer), and learned more about G. Can't wait to wrap up the series and figure out who is behind all of these deaths!
This is a totally gripping read! I am excited to read the sequel! But the characters are obnoxious and the writing isn't the most elegant. The mystery aspect is really cool, but overall the tale is shallow. Furthermore, it isn't clear what is the work of the faux darer and what is that of the puppet master...
Holy heck that was Crazy! A major page turner filled with more bodies and a whole lot of craziness. I so want to know who the heck is behind all of this mayhem. Guess I have to read the next one right away to find out. These books are goodreads that's for sure.
Really nothing special; basically Pretty Little Liars (my impression of it, anyway; I'm far from a PLL fan). Don't know why I bothered finishing this book; the mystery dragged out way too long.
My book is Secrets and Lies by Jacqueline Green. The genre is realistic fiction and mystery. There are three main characters, Tenley, Sydney, and Emerson. Tenley is very independent, she never gives up, and she would do anything to keep her friends safe. Sydney is a very shy and very smart person with a big personality. Emerson is a very confident and determined person who will never let her friends down. The setting is present day in a town called Echo Bay. Tenley, Sydney, and Emerson start getting dares again from a different darer who is willing to share their secrets if they don't to the dares. They go on a very dangerous journey to complete the dares and to find out who the darer is. The conflict in this book is man v. man which is the three girls v. the darer. The three most exciting moments are when they get the first dare, when Sydney tracks down the old fire chief to ask him questions, and when the darer started throwing bottles at Tenley. I think other people will enjoy this book because it's intense and keeps you on the edge of your seat, it mixes reality with crime and mystery, and there are always new dares which keeps the plot interesting and new.
Usually, people agree that sequels are far worse than the originals, whatever that may be. That, however, is not the case with Secrets and Lies. Truth or Dare was very slow moving, and a little bit corny (was kind of like a knock-off Pretty Little Liars with not as likable characters). I was hesitant to continue with the series but I'm glad I decided to keep reading. The second book in the trilogy picks up a little bit after the first one and introduces a whole new character that is way more likable than Caitlin (sorry, Caitlin fans). Jacqueline saved this trilogy by killing Caitlin off in the first book and replacing her with Emerson, so thank you Ms. Green! The girls continue to be tormented by this anonymous Darer but instead of playing victim like in book one, each girl is digging for clues and won't stop until they get them. There are some parts in the book that were only set up for storyline purposes, which I completely understand. But at the same time, they didn't flow neatly together. That's not a huge problem though, because writing a mystery complex as this one, is difficult. I give Jacqueline a two thumbs up on this book. Can't wait to start the third one tomorrow!

The same as the first book I do think these books could have been reduced to two books. I read about 5 chapters and skimmed the rest and read the last few charters its just got to were you pretty much knew who was the next person to die. Recommend to high schoolers you might like the revenge thing.. I thought the dares got a little stupid after a while to care, although this one had a little more action in it to get a 3 star. I enjoyed this second book in this series. The character development was much better in this novel for men than in the first. I thought I had figured out what was happening but once again I was wrong. I'm looking forward to reading the final book in the trilogy to see if some of my first impressions were correct.
Absolutely LOVED this book after reading the first!! Definitely recommend continuing the series if you read Truth or Dare :) I started this book late last night and couldn't put it down until I finished it... It's 2:30 in the morning right now!!
To borrow Calum's words.. Holy Cow! Man, this is one hell of a series! After I read the first book,I kept telling people that this was like Pretty Little Liars and that they'd like this if they like PLL but from now on, I am not going to say that! This is way better than Pretty Little Liars! Damn Jacqueline Green, I love you! I am so so so glad that I finally got my groove back because of these books.. The reason I am not saying a word about the story is because midway through the book I couldn't bear the suspense and had my friend spoil the very ending of the series to me and now that I know the true identity of the Darer, I am afraid I'll reveal it. I know it's not fair to cheat and know who the darer is but I couldn't help it.. but let me tell you this.. I was hoping with everything I had for one person to not be the darer but gues what..? Like always, I didn't get what I wanted! Not fair! I was hoping to get more reasons as to why the girls were targetted but this book didn't do that.. hopefully the next one won't keep me waiting for long!
Secrets and Lies is the next installment of the Truth or Dare series–be sure to check out my review of book 1, Truth or Dare. It’s a book that answered a lot of questions we were left with after Truth or Dare, but at the same time posed a whole lot of new ones. ***Be aware that this review will contain spoilers for book 1, Truth or Dare, so do not read this if you don’t want to be spoiled!***
After Truth or Dare, Tenley, Sydney, and Emerson have been brought together by the darer. With the loss of Caitlyn, the darer has brought Emerson to the forefront of the action and her secrets and lies (HA, see what I did there) are even juicier than Tenley and Sydney’s. The stakes are raised, with multiple attempts made on Tenley’s life by the darer, and the girls are motivated to find out who the darer really is.
So with this book we have the friendship of three very different people. Tenley is the typical mean girl, Sydney is your artsy girl next door, and Emerson is the gorgeous cheerleader and model. None of them really necessarily like one another in the beginning and yet they come together and bond because of Caitlyn’s death and the darer’s persistent tormenting.
It’s sort of a strength in numbers thing at first. As the story progress and the darer does their thing, the three girls begin to care and worry about one another, which is a nice change from typical high school petty drama.
Just like with Truth or Dare, the character creation and representation was on point. There were so many characters and they were written in such a way that I felt like I knew every single one of them.
In Secrets and Lies, the mystery gets deeper. After everything that’s happened and come to light, the girls are actively searching for the darer. They think it’s so weird that the darer seems to know everything and be everywhere, which is true. Everything is intensified because the game is real now. With threats to expose secrets that could probably get people arrested and the attempts the darer is making on Tenley’s life, you find yourself flipping through the pages like lightning.
I will say though that there’s so much going on. I like that we get a point of view from each of the girls but sometimes it got confusing. There’s just a lot that was happening to each of them and so I think that it was pretty much unavoidable to make it fully clear. Add that to the fact that half the time the girls were confused and didn’t know what was going on, it made a bit of a mess.
The really awesome part about Secrets and Lies was the ending. The girls basically decide that they’re done playing games. They show their strength and send a message to the darer, calling them out. That moment was pretty badass. The downside though is that the book just ends there. I feel like this is meant to be a bridge book. We don’t really learn who the darer is, sure some people are eliminated as suspects, and some questions are answered but even more are brought to light. Secrets and Lies is part mystery, part chronicle of all the stupid things that teenagers do.
Review in Review:
As aforementioned, Secrets and Lies is a bridge book. In it, a bit more of the mystery of the darer is unraveled, but with that comes even more mystery. I liked Secrets and Lies. It was great getting suspense and mystery and to begin to see just how big this darer really is in the grand scheme of everything. However, if you’re reading Secrets and Lies to find out who the darer is, you’re going to be disappointed because that doesn’t happen, not yet.
Secrets and Lies picks up right where Truth or Dare ended. Tenley, Sydney, and Emerson have been brought together by secrets and by the murder of their mutual friend. It's pretty apparent from events that the darer / murderer from book one must have an accomplice. This accomplice now continues to send anonymous, threatening messages and even make actual attempts on Tenley’s life. When the girls try to find out the identity of the murderer, they start receiving messages threatening to reveal their deep, dark secrets to the world.
Once again, the plot revolves around the darer with the girls trying to solve the mystery. Suspense is built with the accomplice seeming to know their every move and even their most private conversation and increases with the girls' decision to confront the murder face to face. The mystery is interesting but, at the same time, seems a bit unrealistic and overly dramatic. These girls are teens with so many secrets that they're desperate to conceal, so desperate that they continue the lies. Furthermore, even with their lives at stake, they don't turn to their parents or police and try to resolve things themselves.
I didn't feel connected to the characters. They only care about designer clothes and fashions, and they go around flirting with guys. There's nothing substantial to their characters. It didn't feel like they grew up over the course of the book, and there isn't really anything for us to learn from them; if anything, it's to not be like them. Though I don't think that is too big a problem since I can't envision many high schoolers being like them.
Overall, Secrets and Lies is a straightforward thriller with a well-plotted suspense and a lot of red herrings mixed in with the clues. You just need to remember not to take it too seriously. Be prepared to suspend disbelief, and this book is a quick, entertaining read.
Note: the casual drinking, sex, and drug use make this book unsuitable for young teens readers.
Secrets and Lies, the second book to the Truth or Dare trilogy, was a real roller coaster ride. The secrets and lies and mysteries and everything about it was great! Before starting this, I picked and Truth or are and tried to remember the characters and events, but I failed miserably. Lucky for me, Secrets and Lies did a great job in recapping everything, and I was able to remember and recognize who was who. As I started reading, Secrets and Lies started off from where Truth or Dare ended. As everyone might already know, I'm a big fan of mystery thrillers, and Secrets and Lies had it all, and more. As I mentioned before, Secrets and Lies starts off from where the first book ended. We're back at Echo Bay, and the girls still haven't even gotten close to finding out who the murderer/darer is. This whole book revolves around the darer and the girls trying to solve the mystery. I loved that, and it was great to see that the book still stayed true to it's story and plot. All the characters we met in the first book come back here, and no new characters are introduced (boohoo), but I still found in interesting because there were a LOT of characters (it was even hard to keep track of them), and each one had their own diverse story. I honestly think Secrets and Lies killed me more than Truth or Dare. For one, I definitely enjoyed it better. No chapter was boring, and every page was suspenseful and exciting to read. We got to learn more about the characters, and got to discover shocking secrets. As I finished this, I went crazy because I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!! I definitely cannot wait for the third book, and I'm really glad I got to pick this series up! I totally recommend this to any mystery/thriller fan out there looking for a fun and suspenseful read!
