It was the best night firefighter Evan Drake has ever had. And now those hours with Selena Jarboe are turning into the biggest challenge he's ever faced. Fatherhood and marriage were hardly part of this Texan's plans, but he won't let his child grow up the way he did--without a dad. So like it or not, Selena is getting his help. She and his unborn baby need it. Or...do they? Turns out this alluring, passionate woman is not exactly the struggling single he thought she was. She's a runaway heiress with issues about men with risky jobs. Jobs like his. Well, tough luck. He's not giving up on her.... And he's definitely not giving up his career, either.
Amy Knupp is a USA Today Best-Selling author of contemporary romance and a freelance copy editor. She loves words and grammar and meaty, engrossing stories with complex characters.
Amy lives in Wisconsin with her husband, and has two sons, four cats, and a box turtle. She graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in French and journalism. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, breaking up cat fights, watching college hoops, and annoying her family by correcting their grammar.
Well, the heroine was an idiot and needed to be taken out by a freak giant octopus eating human accident but other than that Heat of the Night was fun.
The Gist: On the run from her family who's upset her Selena decides she needs to spice things up for the night and hook up with a stranger from the bar, gets herself knocked up and then tries to run from that, too.
Alright. So Evan was a good guy mostly. He had one bad reaction that lasted 12 hours but other than that he's a good guy. He's a firefighter and goes all in when once he's set his mind to something. He's determined, too. Selena, though. Lord. She's a brat. With her family and her relationship. If she doesn't get her way and people don't change their entire lives for her...she cuts them out. She's irrational and just obnoxious most of the time. Though she's a good painter at least.
The romance. Yeaaaaah. I was serious about that giant octopus eating her and leaving the hero a
Alright so my big issue was the heroine I just nope.
So, yeah. Heat of the Night was mostly a miss because of the heroine but it was an easy read and I liked the hero and some of the side characters so might be willing to try another.
The second book in the Island Fire series by Amy Knupp. Selena Jarboe comes from money but runs away from her family to San Amaro Island where her father left her the vacation home there. She goes to a bar and meet Evan Drake and has a one night stand. Now there are consequences and Selena needs to know if Evan will step up to the plate.
It was a pleasant read. There was room for improvement but overall I did like it.
I got to say this book had potential but was squandered by Selena’s mood swings. She was like fire and ice. Her mood swings had no rhyme or reason. I get it your pregnant. I’ve been pregnant twice and never treated my husband as badly as Selena treated Evan. I mean I get it you lost your father young but that’s no excuse to push away the man you claim to love. Evan was a plain pushover. He danced to the beat of her drum. Selena was more child than adult. It was a good read just not for me because of Selena’s pretentious behavior. Her actions were born of cowardice.
I really enjoyed Book 2. The heat never really stopped between Selena and Evan, even though it was like pulling teeth to get her to see how good they were for each other. But there is always a happy ending.
Both Selena and Evan have a history when it comes to their past, how they grew up and what was missing in their lives. One thing that wasn't missing was the attraction for one another. That was how spending one night together started and before they knew it, nine months would deliver them a bouncing baby.
Her fears played the part of losing a loved one because of the kind of work they did, a high-risk job where they put their lives on the line to protect someone else. Selena couldn't risk being involved with Evan not knowing maybe he wouldn't make it out of a fire he'd try to knock down and make it home. She would rather raise this baby by herself than to subject herself to another loss.
Evan Drake grew up without a father leaving his mother Susan to raise twins by herself. Sometimes they were living in the back of an old station wagon because they were evicted from where they were living. But that made him resilient and made him good at what he did. He couldn't change what he did because that would change the kind of man he was.
It appeared Selena had differences with their mother and left Boston when she decided to have a going away party for her brother going back overseas for another tour. She got in the car and drove to San Amaro Island in south Texas here she would stay at the home her father left her in his will. She needed to stand on her own two feet after her mother shut down the bank account they shared. $423.07 was all she had left.
Once she got to the island, she stopped at Shell Shack to get something to eat and this is where she met Evan, and spending that night with him would change their lives forever.
Read the story: Fully Involved: A Single Dad Firefighter Romance (Island Fire Book 3) Firefighter Clay Marlow might have a colorful past, but priorities became black and white fast when he learned he has a daughter. As the custody battle heats up, Clay’s focus is providing the stability his little girl has never known. Happy reading!
Well, this is a very pleasant surprise in my summer reading adventures. I have had most of the books in this series downloaded on my Nook for awhile and believe me, I will be reading the rest of this series. These firefighters are too good not to!
Heat of the Night is the second book of the Island Fire series. I finished the first book, Playing with Fire, yesterday and immediately started on this one. Have I mentioned this series is about a group is irresistible firefighters? The setting is in south TX, San Amaro Island, and it sounds beautiful and raw. Evan is the charmer of the department, he wants a family someday…operative word, someday. He is known for being able to pick up just about any woman he sets his eyes on. He is far from ready to settle down. Selena is seeking refuge at the vacation home her father had built many years ago. It is a place she can find solace and feels most connected with her father. She is fleeing family conflicts and sorely needs the connection. The night she arrives she is looking to forget everything she has left behind and all the family drama. That’s all it’s supposed to be. Unfortunately, plans don’t always work out as they are supposed to.
This series has characters you can connect with. It focuses on some typical problems, but doesn’t get overly dramatic. It’s more of a good summer read set on a beautiful island with lots of interesting characters. Summer is here and this is a good series to get all the beach feels.
We first met Evan in Playing with Fire. He’s good-looking, kind and lucky with the ladies. He isn’t ready to settle down anytime soon. Then he meets Selena. She is having a bad time and does something very out of character when she goes home with Evan. She doesn’t leave a last name or phone number and Evan can’t stop thinking about her. Over the course of the book, Selena’s troubles seem to go from bad to worse, but we really see her strength and growth over the course of the story. After some bad reactions, initially, Evan is there for Selena when she needs him and becomes a one-woman man instead of an every woman man. I wanted to bop him over the head a couple of times, but he definitely matured. There are some very emotional moments in this book. At the end, and during the epilogue, I had tears in my eyes. I sat down and read the book in one sitting. When I finished I went back and re-read some parts that gained poignancy from something that happened later in the book. This is an easy-to-read, enjoyable and emotional book from the Island Fire series. I’m definitely looking forward to Clay’s story. I received a free ARC from the author and am pleased to leave this honest review.
Selena left her privileged life determined to make it on her own without her family and their money. She had to find a job but she had never worked a day in her life so had no experience. What could she do? She'd worry about that tomorrow. Today she was going to do something else she had never done before. Pick up a one-night-stand. She spent the night with Evan and it was incredible. She thought she would never see him again but her life had not been working out the way she expected.
Have you ever read a book where you did not care for one of the main characters? It is rare for me as I usually start liking them at some point but this woman ... nope. She was so afraid of losing someone that she didn't want anyone she cared about to have a dangerous job. Because of this, she wouldn't let herself love anybody who had a job she considered dangerous. I just wanted to shake her. Evan opened his heart for her and she wouldn't accept him because he was a firefighter. I should note that because of her I considered DNF'ing this book. Overall I am wholeheartedly team Evan. I love it when a player finds "the one".
We go back to San Amaro Island, TX and the brave firefighters living there. This time, it’s Evan Drake’s story. Evan is full of life, and dedicated to his work. His upbringing was tough, but that has helped him be the man that he’s today. Selena Jarboe had a privilege upbringing, but leaves her home fed up with that life, and what she feels is her Mother’s distance and a brother not willing to give up his life in the military. When she meets a stranger/Evan, at a beach bar, she decides to have a one night stand, something she’s never done before. Little did she know there would be consequences to that night. I have to confess that as much as I liked Evan, it took 50% of the book before I started tolerating Selena. For me, that took away from the story. But at the same time, proved that the author was talented enough to emit in me those feelings. It’s also a story about family dynamics and how our childhood experiences and perceptions , do mold our adult lives. Another engaging and well developed story by Ms Knupp. I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
4 stars I purchased Heat of the Night book 2 in the Island Fire series by Amy Knupp and this review is given freely. Playboy firefighter Evan has met his match when east coast socialite Selena comes to town looking for a man to help her forget her family and money troubles. Unfortunately, one night of passion only causes Selena's life to become more complicated. This is a complex story of avoidance, duty, acceptance and love. The heckelling and the support given Evan by Uncle Gus and the rest of the firefighters is both heartwarming and hilarious. I could identify with the dilemma of embracing the time you have with your loved ones vs secluding oneself to avoid the potential of pain. The beginning is a little stiff but the remainder of the book is action packed and full of emotions culminating in both a surprise and a happy ending.
I am a big fan of this author and am really enjoying this series. This is the story of Selena and Evan, who meet in a bar at the end of book one in the series. Evan is a local firefighter and Selena has just arrived on the island. Although they both think it will be a one night stand they end up being brought back together and realize that they could have a future. Although I normally like the length of this author's books, I feel this one could have been a bit longer. I fee a lot took place in the last few chapters and I would have liked a bit more development before the ending. Loved the characters and their chemistry, but wanted more of their evolution as a couple.
I did not want this story to end. While I enjoyed the first in the series, I felt there was something missing. In this one, however, everything seemed right. That is not to say that it could do without an editor. There were a few awkward sentences and a couple of instances where a dependent and independent clause had been written as separate sentences rather than as a complex sentence. However, compared to most ebooks, five or six errors is not bad. I loved the characters, their depth, the way they developed. There were no quick fixes — they learned to live with their fears rather than having them solved. I also loved that I had met many of them in the previous book also. I have added the next in the series to my to read list.
Selena and Evan had a connection to begin with, otherwise Selena would never have had a one stand with him. However, when the night has unexpected consequences, the one night stand turns into something more. Selena must face her fears and her family before she can make a decision.
I found Selena real. Not perfect by any means, but real, with flaws and pettiness and attitude. Evan, who starts out as an easy going flirt, also reveals depths and heart. The focus on each of their families also added a lot to the whole. It also spoke to me on a personal level on the subject of death of loved one, people in dangerous jobs, and how families cope. I loved it.
Standalone. Third person all knowing dual point of view. Moderately steamy.
Selena is risk-averse, except for the night she is trying to forget her woes and has a one night stand with Evan. This story involves Selena finally using her art to support her and her unexpected pregnancy, finally opening up to her mother and making amends, realising that she can’t run away from caring and worrying about her loved ones. Evan is initially shocked at the thought of becoming a dad, but soon realises that he wants to be a better man than his father who abandoned his mother when pregnant. He vows to marry Selena and help build a relationship. Likeable characters.
The second book in the Island Fire series. Based on Evan and Selena. Evans come from a challenging upbringing but now has the perfect life, job, friends and female attention. Selena is from old money and come to the island to take a reprieve from her home life, always following the society’s rules. She goes against them and decides to spend one night with Evan. Doing so leaves drastic consequences and she must move on and face them and tell Evan. Selena’s character development throughout made the book for me. Coming from a strict upbringing and different way of life watching her grow and readjust was perfect. The chemistry and doubt between the characters was lovely to read too.
Who doesn't love a story where the "flirt" of the group meets his match? It seems like so many times the easy going, good-looking guy is shallow but that definitely cannot be said of Evan. There is so much complexity to his character due to his life circumstances. As for Selena, I found myself wanting to slap her at times, especially when Evan was trying hard to do the right thing. But then family dynamics do have a way of messing with your mind. And she was dealing with how to make a living when she didn't have much work experience. And I loved the humor in this book.
Good series…When Selena met Evan at a bar, she only wants to forget her problems, she didn't expect to find herself pregnant. Evan was surprised that Selena didn't want to exchange numbers after their night. After Evan's initial reaction to the news, he wants to be a part of Selena's and the baby's life. This is an excellent romance with developed characters. I liked both Evan and Selena. I have enjoyed both books in this series as well as the Hale Street series. This book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone as well.
This read was so believable its amazing. You can so relate to the characters what they feel go through I’m so impressed. I’ve read plenty but this has so much realism it’s shocking. You always worry when you have spouses that have dangerous occupations & pray for them while they are on call but you have to live as this story says. These people have a job to do and are going to do & need your support & love. You never know how long you have to enjoy the life you have so live it to the best & be happy.
This was a sweet love story.book. Evan and Selena met one night at a bar and hookup. Selena finds out that she is pregnant and tells Evan. The two of them have to come to term with their unexpected baby while facing the fact that their lives will never be the same. Selena is stubborn to say the least. She is feisty and trying make a life for herself and her baby. Evan is rather sweet. He kinda reacted badly when he found out about the baby but made up for it with his persistence in winning Selena over.
A beautifully written book that has a brilliant story and great characters. It is a dual POV, it has some steamy scenes but not overly so and a wonderful HEA.
Following a one night stand, Selena finds out she is pregnant with Evan’s child. We follow their story of them slowly falling in love, Evan’s desire of a real family with two parents and Selena’s fear of losing people she loves.
An emotional read at times but I loved every minute of it, the plot is great and you can really empathise with the both characters. I loved this book and would definitely recommend.
Selena Jarboe had everything she ever wanted except love. She decides to go out on her own without money and try to get a job with no work experience. She meets firefighter Evan Drake at the Shell Shack on San Amaro Island for a one-night stand and finds out she is pregnant. She tells Evan she is pregnant and he walks away from her but later returns after having decided that he doesn’t want to have his child raised without a father like his father did to him. I really enjoyed this wonderful opposites attract novel.
I enjoyed heat of the night book 2 in island fire series. Selena runs away from home when she can't handle her brother going back to the war after recovering from a serious injury. Evan is a play boy firefighter who wants to buy a boat to hangout on off duty. They run into each other at a bar and have a one night stand that comes with a little bonus. Both have issues do to their fathers that they have to resolve to make a relationship work between them.
This was a very quick and sweet romance. Selena and Evan were a cute couple. Evan has to work hard to convince Selena to open her heart and take a chance on a relationship.
I liked Selena. She was from a rich family but she wasn't a snobbish brat. She was a hard worker who appreciates what she has.
Overall, a great story. It was a nice break from the urban fantasy that I have been reading for the past few weeks. ______________________ Romanceopoly - women's avenue
Selena and Evan eye locked from across the crowded bar. They go back to his apartment and she sneeks out at 5 a.m. to walk back home. Selena won't exchange phone numbers and a few weeks later she finds out that she is pregnant. At first he acts like most guys do but then he spends the night thinking it over and decides to marry her. It just gets more interesting after that. With all that happens they do get their HEA. Great story 👍❣️.
Overall it was a good story. I, however, struggled to connect with Selena's rationale. I mean the guy wasn't a drug dealer or a paedophile. The thought that you would deny a man access to his child because he's a firefighter seemed extreme and irrational. That said, to watch Selena overcome her fears and mature personally and professionally to resolve things with Evan and her family, and, in the process learn to stand on her own two feet, made for a compelling story.
That was all it took to turn Selena and Evan's lives upside down. It was inspiring to see Selena go from trust fund, society princess to a single woman entrepreneur tackling the concept of single parenthood. Even really stepped up as the future dad, working to build a future and a family with Selena. They boh had to do SO much growing and adjusting to their new circumstances. II purchased a copy of this book from Amazon and voluntarily chose to share my review.
Fantastic book. Fantastic story with lesson of life is worth living and loving and not letting fear get in the way. I loved both Selena and Evan. Both did such stupid, human things but they made them so real to me. Beautifully written romance with a happily ever after.
Very interesting to watch two people from very different backgrounds come together. After a one night stand results in a baby, Evan is determined his child will have his father but Selena won't be involved with a man in a dangerous job. Seeing Selena come to the realization that married or not she'll still worry and that love is worth the risk was satisfying. This series has me caught and I'm on to the next one.
Interesting storyline that does hold the reader’s attention from the first page. This novel has all the fixings one expects, just parceled differently, steam, romance, angst, fear intrigue and of course an HEA and takes an interesting route to get there. Well written with likable characters definitely worth reading Four Stars from me.
I really enjoyed this book. Selena realizes that fearing everything doesn't make you live. Takes her a while to come to this but in the end she realizes. I really like the way the author set her pen to paper in this book. It makes us all realize that life is short and when do you find that one you need to grab on and hang on.
