Mojo Mysteries #2

A Ghost Most Elusive

Rate this book
What’s a guy supposed to do when his mojo’s a no-go?

Mojo Mysteries, Book 2

Adrian Broussard has always considered his ability to talk to ghosts a mixed blessing. Until the night he and his man, Greg Woodhall, find the body of an elderly neighbor. The woman’s ghost whispers murder, then refuses to speak to Adrian again.

She does, however, try to communicate with Greg. An unexpected twist that leaves Adrian grappling with a green-eyed jealousy monster—and he has no idea how to vanquish it.

For Greg, his first experience with talking to a ghost is part fun, part terrifying. Beyond that, he simply wants to help the woman he’d befriended in life. At least Adrian’s just as eager to solve the case, which is good. Because things get real weird, real fast.

Figuring out whodunit isn’t going to be easy, especially with a ghost who seems to be speaking in tongues. But neither of them anticipate the revelations they reveal as they dig deeper into the case. Or the danger those revelations unleash.

Warning: This book contains suspense, spookiness, suggestive nicknames, amateur sleuthing and a grumpy ghost. May cause inappropriate laughter and/or nail-biting.

Ally Blue penned her first tale at age eight, relating the breathless terror of her little sister’s not-quite-fatal encounter with a bee in the backyard. That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with storytelling. She now writes gay romance of all flavors, and has recently branched into writing her first love: horror. She continues her neverending quest to scare herself. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.

I have wanted to read this book since I read the first book back in April of 2014. It took me only five years to get to this point but I'm glad to say I have finally done it.

The first thing I have got to say is that despite the fact that I probably haven't read anything by Ally Blue since "Demon Dog", this book has always remained at the back of my head as a book I had to read at some point of time in my life. And, the moment I started reaaing this book I realised why that was. Turns out I really like Adrain and Greg. I hardly remember anything about these two from the previous books but the moment I saw them in this one I was already invested. I love Adrian and Greg. They are amazing togther.

While I do love Adrian and Greg and the story is paced so you never get bored, I was always aware of the fact that I was waiting for the mystery to be solved to figure out if the suspense was worth it and there was this underlying thread that a lot depended on that ending. It just had to stick because otherwise there wouldn't be enough payoff for the suspense. So, I feel the mystery was well handled, the ending was pretty good and I feel like it was worthy of the suspense.

I didn't like the character of Mandy in this book. I was just waiting for her to turn evil but she didn't and in the end, it was impossible for me to reconcile my animosity with her apparent goodness.

Adrian and Greg remain a fabulous couple and I liked them both individually and together. But I couldn't quite agree with the arcs these two had in this book separeatley and as a couple.

I actually get Adrian's jealously, communicating with ghosts is his speciality and maybe in his head, he correlates the fact of a ghost not talking to him as equating him not being special. In such a context, it makes sense for him to be jealous of the ghost's willingness to communicate with Greg. I also feel that having the ghost talk with Adrian would have made the mystery a tad easier to solve perhaps, so it worked in the story's favour that the ghost chose Greg.

I liked Adrian's arc. I liked how it was conceived and how it seemed that it would take Adrian to the realisation that his powers don't make him special his powers are just the cherry on an already special person. But, we never get to that point where Adrian realises that. The conclusion we get is that since this situation is unlikely to ever happen again he never actually has to work through his feelings, which I didn't like at all. I really hope the author has some payoff planned in some later book for leaving this arc like this.
Greg's arc is his inability to give up on the murder investigation. I do repsect the fact that even when curious Greg never did anything reckless to solve the mystery which I definitely appreciated but I still didn't get why he was so hell bent on solving it. He tells us at the beginning of the story that Mrs H is a grumpy old woman who he knows only because he is nice to everyone and helps literally everyone. I don't get how that translates into motivation for solving her murder to the point that he gets into arguments with Adrian. Again, this could have led to some reckless behaviour but it didn't so I'm gald we atleast didn't go down that road. However, it must also be emphasized that Adrian only tells him to really drop it when seemingly all avenues in the investigation have been exhausted and when it seems that there might be a real threat to their lives. Mandy tells him to drop it but even though he acqueisces to her face in his heart he knows he will continue working on the mystery. I just didn't get the why? Where did the emotional impetus to be so invested in this mystery come from for Greg and could curiousity really justify his vehemence on not giving it up?

Mrs H is not a good character, her character is pretty morally flawed and this made a unique dynamic in which I as a reader wasn't all that interested in getting justice for her. I wanted to know the answer to the mystery mostly because Greg was so hell-bent on cracking it not because I felt anything for Mrs H. Also, the money made me queasy. It felt like blood money and I wish a portion of it would be given back to help the world and not just be someone's personal gains. Though I agree, my feelings on this one might be coloured by my views on Mandy.

The arc that Adrian and Greg have as a couple is pretty minor off itself and mostly deals with the consequences of lying to your partner. But, mostly as a couple Adrian and Greg spend more time going over the differences which their individual arcs set up.

This book really made me feel a lot of things and I feel it was a good decent mystery.

Overall, I enjoyed this journey with Adrian and Greg and I definitely want to read the next one in the series.

Ok, so, this book wasn't everything I hoped and wanted. I've read the entire Bay City Paranormal series and the first book in this series (plus other Ally Blue books) and I usually love them. But this book... I don't know. The previous book in this series really made me think that this would be a mystery series with very little romance because in the last book there wasn't a lot. There were more 'fade to black" type of scenes than anything else in the romance department. This one, had more romance, but more relationship drama as well. Like a lot of drama. Like I thought I was reading a couples therapy book. There was an overwhelming (or at least it felt like it) amount of, "when you do this, it make me feel this way" type of conversations. And overall all the romance felt like a lot of work. Almost like I didn't want them to stay together if was going to be this much work, no matter how much they love each other. It made me stop rooting for their love.

I think my problem with it is it wasn't what I expected when I picked up the book. I was thinking happy guys, good couple with the most heavy thing the fact that there were ghosts that had been murdered and needed resolution. So I wasn't prepared for so much relationship angst. I've read books all about relationship angst, but that's how they were advertised so I was prepared and I read them when I was in the right mood. Plus this book seems to leave some dangling question about their relationship and I don't know if I have it in me to take on another angsty book about these two (when/if it comes out.)

SO 2 stars from me but I'm not ready to close the door on these characters just yet...

A Ghost Most Elusive is the second book in Ally Blue’s Mojo Mysteries series. If you are a fan of Blue’s Bay City Paranormal Investigations series, you are going to love this book. This story has more of the feel that BCPI gave off than the first book, while still maintaining its own identity. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the first story in this series, Demon Dog. But the whodunit feel of A Ghost Most Elusive adds a lighter feel to this series. I really liked this book, even more than the first.

The mystery of this story is exciting the entire way through, and it’s twofold. I won’t go into detail in describing both parts, but know that the way this story plays out is so good. The surprise revelation of the mystery at the end? It’s totally worth the stress caused by the rest of the story.

I really wish I could say differently but a fair chunk of this was a forced read. I love Ally Blue's Bay City Paranormal series and since this was a spin off I was wanting...hoping it would be the same. Book 1 was a 3 star read, so for me that's ok, it means a good solid enjoyable read not fantastic but enjoyable from start to finish and that's ok they don't all have to be 5 star reads.

This book gets 2.5 stars and just barely. A lot of the time I felt like I was spinning my gears on a story that seemed to be making no progress and as if that wasn't bad enough there were times that I wondered why Adrian & Greg were together, it almost felt forced. Their connection just didn't seem to be there.

In regards to the story there were times that it seemed sketchy and might have benefited from a bit more detail. Overall it just wasn't working for me the way the original series did or her stand alone book Adder which I absolutely loved!

I'm torn on whether or not I'll be continuing with this series, I guess time and my elusive interest will tell.

When the old lady that Greg used to help is found dead and her ghost professes it murder, Greg is determined to solve the mystery. This time he's got the old woman's granddaughter along to help. It's also annoying Adrian that the ghosts who normally talk to him, will only talk to Greg. There's the usual mystery type stuff with people breaking into the house, the old woman being a drug dealer and other stuff happening.

It was better this time that Greg and Adrian weren't quite so precious. They had some fights and were not so perfect that they annoyed me. However they barely new the woman's granddaughter and they were best friends, hugging, saying how much they cared about each other, etc. You've only known her 3 days. Maybe I'm just a miserable old grump. LOL

The second book in this series does not disappoint. Adrian and Greg's relationship has grown and the two of them just great together. Love the chemistry. It is nice to see a series where the two main characters are young but are stable and responsible. I also like the fact they both are willing to look at their own actions and be honest that they aren't always perfect.

I selfishly look forward to more books in the series. I would love to see the series continue with Adrian and Greg solving more "mysteries" and building a life together once Adrian has finished grad school.

Better than the first in this new spinoff series. It's good to see the main couple on their own without BCP. A bit heavy on the jealousy and insecurities, but an enjoyable read. Still see lots of potential with this series.

I am really glad Ally Blue decided to continue with this series, at least sort of. I love the characters in this new series, and love that some of the older ones
