“Don’t you know better than to play with monsters?”

I’ve spent my life in the Borderlands with no feeling. I am half a ghost, born with half a soul and numb because of it. On my 22nd birthday, I’m bound for the Sacrifice in the Wailing Woods and come face to face with the monsters—only to discover I can feel them.

Perhaps I’d rather play with the monsters than kill them.

So, I follow the monsters through the Veil of Souls and into their cursed wasteland. Luckily, I’m not looking for a happily ever after.

I’m looking for a dark and dangerous once upon a time…

Bestselling Kindle Vella author Emily Shore brings you a dark fantasy romance inspired by the myth of Cupid and Psyche. If you love fast-burn dark romance, morally gray monsters, and the sassy sweetheart they’ll burn worlds for, you will fall hard for touch-starved Quintessa and her beastly boys. Perfect for fans of the Vicious Lost Boys Series.

I had the privilege of being an ARC reader for "The Sacrifice" By Emily Shore.

I sorta knew what I was getting into when it came to this story but I didn't really know what I was 100% getting into.

I'll be honest, I had been typing notes as I was reading but sadly lost all of it, so bare with me as I re-figure my thoughts.

The story follows Quinntessa; a half ghost/half human female. She seemed quite annoying and a "I'm not like other girls" type of character. Though as we finally flicked through her story, it reminded me of Cinderella where she gets treated like trash by family until finding her happily ever after.

Up until the crossing over Sacrifice scene, I didn't understand the point of a lot of things such as the poorly written miscarriage scene, especially since that character isn't scene again..nor really Quinntessa's family.

Than we are introduced to the Dragons? Vampires? Dragon Vampires? I'm quite confused on what they were. At times the men were brilliantly written while other times they felt meh.

I noticed that I ended up despising Quinntessa, she felt poorly written her own story and when she was written with the Vampire Dragons, she brought their scenes down.

When the Vampire Dragons were without Quinntessa, they seemed half decent enough to be interested in.

I don't understand the two dicks thing. Like I get there's two things (dragon? Vampire?) Bound inside of a man but I felt like it didn't really need the two dicks.

By the last 10% it felt quite messy, character coming and going. Scenes jumping all over the place.

The smut felt quite chaotic, almost like they were forcing characters to describe or speak unnecessarily during the spicy.

I also didn't understand what the story for this was supposed to be. A horny half ghost human who loves to fk Vampire dragon angels? That's all I got, the smut with no story.

**ARC copy on exchange for an honest review**

Unfortunately I had to DNF this book as it was very difficult to follow. The story begins in a very confusing world building bomb of information. It unfortunately did not hold my attention and I found I was forcing myself to keep reading. This book is not for me but if you’re looking for a monster smut book with little structure this may be the book for you.
December 17, 2025
Some might be wondering "Hey, Izzah usually doesn't rate books she shelves as early DNF. What is going on?"

I'm happy to answer you (Definitely not me having a conversation with myself)

I was trudging through the terrible world building and the crappy middle school level writing and decided to go to the reviews, wondering if it gets any better. As I was sifting through them, I read that the author used a negative review to promote her book, but in a mean way. Okay, that's not necessarily awful, but it still seemed in bad taste.

I decided to look it up and indeed not only did she do it, she brags about it:

So, bad reviews are supposed to be harder on neurodivergent authors. I don’t think this is for enneagram 8’s like me. I turned my favorite hilarious 1⭐️review into an ad. It complained that my dragon has two🍆🍆. It gets tons of likes every day!
With laughing emojis backgrounds

This is so contemptible.

Instead of reaching out to the reviewers and expressing something along the lines of "Hello, I feel as if what you disliked are the exact elements I want my target audience to like. In the spirit of camaraderie, would you mind if I used it to promote my book?"

Since my soul is black and stooping to her level of pettiness is totally up my ally, I have no problem saying:

This author is delusional. She throws TW after TW hoping to shock people into clutching their pearls. Then, she can live in her delulu mound, basking in the adoration of the five stars and dismiss the one star reviews as done by people too delicate to 'get' her.

I'm here to kick that sand castle.

You're just a bad writer. If your books make no sense, it has noting to do with the smut or the number monsters and peens that fuck the heroine. It just means it's badly written.

Final thought

The website says:
a miscarriage scene in the opening chapters *It takes place with two friends as one helps the other and is written with emotion and respect*

But while the poor girl is bleeding on the snow, the FMC interrupts her explanation with

“I promise I won’t say anything about your thighs,” I interrupt, distracting my friend, my smile curving to the right as I distract her while bunching her skirts up to her hips.

Also that sentence alone proves what a terrible writer you are. Poor grammar is in a corner, trying hard to lick the wounds you inflicted upon it.

I'm upset that this is the first book I've DNF in a LONG time. I am a fan of monster smut, but the lack of structure and info dumping was just too much. I can see how it would have worked on a Vella format, but this wasn't for me.

I know that the author's note says see website for more info... but even a small trigger warning list at the beginning would have been nice. I was more confused by what was happening then disturbed by the pregnancy loss, but other people might need a warning. It was very abrupt and I had to keep rereading to even understand what was going on. I understand world building is important, but it just left me confused and I didn't want to go any further. I was stupid excited about this book but now I'm disappointed that I couldn't get very far.

Dark fantasy romance? Lots of smut? I’m in!

Quintessa is half ghost and cannot feel any physical touch. She is “grey”. She’s lonely, sassy, and fearless. I enjoyed her internal dialogue.

Quin is ready for a change in her life and goes to The Sacrifice.

On Hallow Night, Quin injures a dragon and for the first time in her life, she felt something. She knew she couldn’t let this go and had to follow him. When the dragon runs back to the Veil, Quin chases after him.

This is when she meets four sexy monster gods. 🐉 As soon as she encounters Drago at their castle, the spice happens! 🌶️ After that, it’s all smut. 🥵

I love how the monster gods all interact with each other and how fast of a burn this turns into!🔥 Each god has their own unique personality and traits.

Please check your triggers, as there’s a long list of them! 😜

I can’t wait for book two!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

i might be too dumb for this book.

i don’t understand basically anything that happens. the beginning is meant to be this big section of world building, which ends up being just detailed enough to be confusing, but not detailed enough to be clear.

i don’t really understand what time period this is meant to be? quintessa lives in the borderlands (border of what, i’m not sure) and then there’s a veil (wall?) made of souls (?) that separates the borderlands from the waste. (?) i don’t really know what the waste is?? it’s a section of the world where the 4 kings were trapped? it’s covered in ash? no people live there? but souls do? but there are whole souls and half souls and no souls?

quintessa is a half soul? half ghost thing?? and she has “vym” which is never really explained. some sort of goo?? in her blood?? because she’s a “blood binder” so she can use her blood to heal people? but blood and vym are not the same?? i dunno. qora is explained to have “shadow vym” but i was picturing quintessa’s vym as shadow magic already, so i guess i was wrong. but that means that i don’t actually know what it is or means. not to mention, qora is quintessa’s twin who died at birth?? but she exists as a shadow that no one but quintessa and the kings can see? and she’s spent her whole “life” (?) trying to kill quintessa except for at one point she says she never was actually going to hurt her, but never explains why not?? or why she was trying to kill her in the first place??

the best parts of these books are when the guys are interacting, cause at least i sort of get what’s happening there. they’re cursed to stay in the waste except for one night a year where they get to hunt for sacrifices. sure. makes sense. that’s the clearest part of the book.

not to mention, quintessa is another one of those heroines who are just so stupid and selfish. her tantrum about the fox nearly made me dnf the book in the first place, because what a whiny toddler of a character. then she can’t ever keep her mouth shut, which i guess is supposed to show how she’s “sassy” and “doesn’t take shit from anyone” but it really just makes her seem arrogant and idiotic. i really wished merikh would’ve just killed her after he told her “stay here you stupid fucking idiot” and she followed them anyway.

she would’ve deserved it. she keeps trying to seem fearless, which maybe she is, but pissing off strangers and disobeying rules in someone else’s house where you’re hoping they’ll let you stay is just selfish, entitled, snotty behavior. and there’s just not much to like about her. maybe if she were smarter or kinder or less reckless, i would like her. but half the book is people saying to her “hmm maybe you shouldn’t do that” and she responds with “i never know what i’m doing but i’ll figure it out” and then everyone else has to save her because she’s too stupid to recognize that maybe wandering around in strange lands you’ve never been to and don’t understand is probably not the best idea.

i won’t be reading the rest, because i don’t assume quintessa gets any smarter.

First off, read the triggers first. There’s a LOT. But, I feel as though the triggers were actually lacking. It seems as though the author tried to be relatively specific, while actually not giving anything away, but put the triggers on their website instead of listing them in the book. Extra work, but fine. I went, I read the list, and read the book.
The triggers I feel need to be updated because the current list (I feel) does not list all I found, are as follows:
- “One sexual assault scene with forced orgasms but without penetration”. I feel this to be false, because there are two assault scenes, the one I feel the author is addressing, and another is an assault scene with a male character and he is definitely forced to penetrate.
- “a miscarriage scene in the opening chapters *It takes place with two friends as one helps the other and is written with emotion and respect*”. I also feel this one to be false because there are two scenes (one is the miscarriage mentioned, the other is a stillbirth) in the story that need to be warned about, and one of them is definitely not between two friends. It may be part of the over arching “childhood trauma” trigger, but I feel the single miscarriage trigger is misleading (though maybe not done in bad faith).

Overall, I found the story relatively hard to follow. Smut heavy, plot light. Not much world building, if any, though this is first book of the series, the world is only vaguely described. This may be explained further in other books from the series, but I don’t feel compelled to continue on after the first. If you don’t care much for plot, have no triggers, and are just here for the heavy dirty talk, degradation, and dragon/shifter peen, this would be perfect for you!

Quintessa, half-human, half-ghost, knows only apathy and abuse from her fellow humans. But when she's forced into a sacrificial ritual, she discovers she can feel the monsters. Instead of killing them, she follows them into their cursed world.
Ugh, where to start. I was craving trash, and boy did we get it. The plot is so confusing and weird. Everything is explained so poorly that you barely understand anything - I even doubted my English skills. And then she gets to the "gods" or monsters, who then take her, because sex is all that matters in this world.
Then the author tries to introduce a plot, but doesn't really explain anything. The dragon shifter (his name is Drago, hahahahaha) nails Quintessa in his dragon form and kills her in the process because he's too big and hot or something. So, death by dragon dick is also something I've never read before. Of course, she's resurrected because, well, they're gods. And yes, everyone is horny - constantly horny.
Then the dragon gets kidnapped somehow and she has to rescue him. A pathetic attempt to create a plot. I regret everything about this read.

What even was this?? It was truly a rollercoaster of thoughts and emotions trying to get through this book. Let’s start at the beginning. The first couple chapters are so confusing because too much is happening at once- the characters, the magic system, the general world building- and none of it is done well. You’re basically just thrown into Quinn’s chaotic experience leading up to the Sacrifice, which isn’t even explained until much later. If you continue it does get clearer, and if it doesn’t then you can make some inferences to fill in the many gaps. But then Quinn meets the male monsters (a dragon, a Fae, a fallen angel, and a vampire) and things get heated, literally. The sex was so dark and abusive (‼️check triggers before reading) and I KNOW THEY ARE MONSTERS but really???? You want me to believe that a half man/half dragon’s TWO scaly 🍆s the size of clubs (!!) can fit into a human woman?? Or that when the full dragon’s massive 🍆 the girth OF A TREE penetrates her cervix 😵‍💫 (I guess there’s no where else for it to go so maybe that tracks) that she LITERALLY DIES 💀 but when she wakes up (???) she immediately wants more??? And ok I get that she’s touch starved and they have only fucked each other and literal corpses for like 10,000 years but everyone’s horniness was just so over the top and cringey. Like can you just calm down and breathe for a minute? They were also just written crudely and the descriptions made me 🥴. These god awful (pun intended) scenes made me want to DNF but I thought the plot would be worth it. I was wrong. There were breadcrumbs of plot points that could have been so good if they weren’t just brushed over and basically forgotten. For one we never find out what the full deal is with the monsters- the curse, their powers, their true forms, their history. The conflicts that did occur didn’t seem to flow at all. You introduce the guy called the “god eater” the monsters fear but a HAG is the one who gets the better of the dragon??? Bruh. Anyway. I just felt unsatisfied with the little information that I did learn, and maybe that’s because it’s book 1 in a series (assuming 4, one for each of the monsters?) and she’ll explain more as the story progresses? I don’t know, but I don’t think I can handle more monster mashing. I give this a low 2/5 stars

I literally didn’t read for almost a whole month avoiding this book, but I finally just struggled through it so I didn’t DNF. This book is so all over the place it seems like it was written by ChatGPT and even then I think AI would be an easier to follow story than this. Nothing makes and nothing is ever explained like ever. It’s not even worth the smut and I’ll read a shitty book if the smut is decent but it wasn’t the way body positions were explained in some scenes are physically impossible and it just seemed like the author wanted to throw every type of kink in every single scene and it just didn’t work.

SPOILERS BELOW

The magic/power system that the story has just doesn’t make sense. There’s dragons, vampires, fae, angels, witches/the Hag, shadows, half humans?, humans with different binding powers (that are never explained) and normal humans. Not to mention all the lesser monsters that are in the woods. None of it is connected and just leaves you confused especially whenever the “vym” is brought it. I constantly found myself so confused by what was going on I eventually stopped trying to figure it out.

Why has Kronos trapped the Kings? What did they do that was so bad that lead to Qora betraying Quinn to him? How are they bounded by the Veil? If they can consume souls and over power him like Merikth did why not just do that? Why can Drago be the only one to fuck her? All of these questions could’ve been answered and not sacrifice the suspense element of the plot.

The dragon killing her by fucking her so hard I guess and then all the kings do some weird magic to bring her back? That’s never explained and once she’s brought back to life she immediately wants to bone Drago while actively bleeding from being ripped open? I get she’s been touched starved her whole life but please that was just ridiculous. Then in the end she found his soul but still ended up dying anyway?

These were just a couple of instances that made we realize this book is utterly terrible and I will not be continuing the series.

First of all, this was my first experience as an ARC reader and what a way to start!!!! I knew from the author’a note in the beginning this was going to be the book for me!!
“If you’re like me, maybe you use trigger warnings as a shopping list” “I suggest you keep a partner or toy nearby” - Emily Shore.
YES PLEASE! This book was fast paced with an exciting plot and plenty of spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Who knew I could fall in love with 4 monster gods!! This story is RH and has a strong FMC that continued to grow stronger throughout the story! It’s a real page turner that just left me wanting more and more!! COUNTING DOWN TIL BOOK 2!! I hated this book and I tied to like it I really did! I made it to 91% then trashed it I couldn’t anymore! I’m a book lover and I don’t usually dislike the things I read, but this was basically just a very bad love story and a bunch a ruff sex and I mean I’m all down for the dirty in books!
But this was just not good!
I didn’t like the story it did not make sense there was not a single thing in any of the main characters I liked at all!
Yeah this is deffs a hard no!
Idk if I was the writing style the story or just the characters but everything made me mad!
I didn’t mind the beginning but it just progressively got worse!

2.5 MA - Firstly, read the TW. Secondly, read the reviews.. I hate writing negative reviews and try to refrain from using terms like 'dumpster fire'. .. the start of this book made my brain hurt, your thrust into a random scene with little world building or even a story that makes sense, admittedly it did get mildly better, eventually. Its monster smut, but the writings not great & neither is the smut.

I absolutely loved this book so much, it was hard to put down and force myself to sleep. I ended up finishing it around 2:30am the day I finished it. I have not read anything else by Emily Shore but if any other books are written as good as this one she definitely has a new fan!

the author probably thinks she really did something here.

sorry, but this book made me feel like I don’t understand the english language. It‘s like words are just randomly strung together and they make no sense when you try to connect them to sentences. There was lore sprinkled in between the atrocity that is supposed to be smut and the bad attempts at being witty. Nothing made sense, it was like starting smack in the middle of a series without having any sort context. And please. Please stop with the alliterations.

That was a big ol’ bowl of spice. Delicious. Yum. 🤤😋 four monster god brothers? SIGN ME UP. Double swords? Yes. Crossed swords. YES. Quinn’s whole character (and Qora omg loved her) so freaking cool and I absolutely loved this story. Perfect for a monster lover or a fantasy lover looking to expand their monster tastes. What better way to do that than with a double dong dragon. (Did I say yum? Cause yum.) the world building *chefs kiss*
Absolutely loved this and cannot wait to see what Emily brings to us to devour next ❤️‍🔥🌶️🥵

What a wild ride!

Full of spice and a fast read, The Sacrifice was a steamy RH with the most delicious monster gods.

Definitely a good read if you're looking for something heavy on the smut. The plot got a little lost in there for me for a bit, and it seemed a little lacking in structure in some places. However, I enjoyed it as a quick, easy read.

⭐️ - Book Rating: 4.5
🌶 - Spice Rating: 5

🖤 - Important Notes:
I was given an ARC from THE AUTHOR in exchange for an honest review. So, I will do just that. Additionally, this review does have minor spoilers! Please proceed with caution!

🐉 - Review:
First and foremost, CHECK THE TRIGGERS for this book! Secondly, this book was honestly sooooo good!

The beginning was kinda hard to get into but I pushed through and i'm soooo glad I did! The spice was TOP NOTCH and the plot was honestly extremely interesting to read!

Quintessa honestly seemed to have gone through a lot growing up and I think she definitely deserved to have her hunky Dragon and his "brothers".

I honestly can't wait to read the next book The Surrender! I can't wait to read some more spicy monster smut and read about Quin's next adventures!!

I think my only little issue was the beginning since I felt it was a bit slow, but I honestly think that was a me problem. Like I mentioned previously, it was slow but I pushed through and I'm so glad I did!

🧛‍♂️ - Overview Notes:
Cheating: No.
OM/OW Drama: No.
Virgin Hero/Heroine: No.
Book Tropes: Why Choose, Fantasy, Age Gap & More
HEA: No. (Book 1)

Was this edited or beta read…where is this author’s handler to rein in the cuckoo tangent? I mean I’m no prude, I like my chilli ✨spicy✨ but this…made no sense. If you just want unhinged characters with p🌽 in almost every chapter and a plot that makes your eyeballs want to exit stage left from the strain of trying to figure out what the heck is going on then this is cool, this book will work for you.
