Trinity-Rose Crane gifted me this ARC for an honest review.
Having not read the other books in the series, I have gone in blind. At first, I thought I’d need to read the others, but I soon got the vibe and the characters down.
From the opening line, you are thrust into the visceral image of the world Trinity-Rose Crane has built. Each character has charm, but I must admit to Alex being my favourite. Her flippant disregard for all except her brother, and her attitude in general just screamed trouble – Loved it! Alex’s character arc is an amazing evolution and touched me at some points, though I know she’d hate to hear that!
Each character has a distinct voice, and the way the story shows their lives before they all collaborate ensures you care about them when things ‘go down.’ They blend together well, and the drama, conflict, and connections are believable.
The detached way Trinity-Rose Crane writes is as though we’re hovering over the characters rather than inside their minds – which is unusual for first-person POV. It’s rather eerie and different from what I’ve read before. This could also be because I’m not used to reading in first person, present tense.
Although I would have liked to learn more about the surroundings and character appearances, I believe this is a style/writing device to get the action going and continue the eerie feeling of something coming. It leaves out erroneous detail to get right into the meat of the plot.
The additional horror elements that pop up tells me that Trinity-Rose Crane has potential in the genre – the gore was amazing!
Trinity-Rose Crane has a great way of building tension, creating good character voices, and writing plots that keep the reader hooked. There’s something happening on each page, with no lulls or breathing space. It made for a quick read and definite page turner. It definitely made me want to continue the series
This book is captivating from the first line!! It is absolutely fantastic and I throughly enjoyed every moment. It is unique and left me wanting to read more. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in the supernatural.
I loved every minute of this book. As a prequel was great to get another perspective on some of the characters from the other books while also meeting new ones.
Really enjoyed this expansion of the world and diving deeper into the motivations and backstory of these characters.
As always Trinity-Rose's writing leaves me wanting more work from her!
My favourite book in the Hell’s series, I personally would recommend reading this one first even though it’s a prequel. The quality of writing and story is an improvement from the previous two books and it has been a pleasure to see Trinity-Rose evolve as an author.
