Sweeter Temptation is the story of Kyle, who is Adam's brother from Taste For Temptation, and Nia, who is trying to save the peppermint bark factory where her grandmother worked. Kyle's latest assignment is to shut down said factory which his father had purchased immediately before his death without telling anyone.
My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed Sweeter Temptation because it starts off with my second favorite trope: stranded together! Kyle has arrived in Candy, Ohio to meet with the factory president, but gets caught in a blizzard. Thankfully, Nia was on her way home and picks him up. She has no choice but to take him home with her, where the two are snowed in for a few days. Don't worry, they keep each other warm and entertained! Of course, she has no idea that he's the man who's about to shut down her beloved factory.
It was a little annoying to have another hidden identity plot, but I do think Sweeter Temptation did it better than Taste for Temptation since it comes up earlier. Nia can't seem to reconcile the sexy man she spent three days in bed with with this heartless businessman. However, Kyle really is the man she knows him to be. He comes off as a heartless playboy who's just looking out for himself, but he really is a savvy business man with a heart. It just took the right woman to bring it out of him.
Sweeter Temptation also has a slight mystery element to it as Nia is trying to find some file that her grandmother left with plans for the factory, as well as her famous toffee recipe. I guessed where it was early on, but it was still a fun reveal when they eventually find it at the end. Happy endings all around!
I was a bit leery to read this one. Kyle in the last book was a git and I wasn't sure that I could read a whole book about his womanizing rich ways. It didn't help with how things started and he basically threw a temper tantrum at his uncle's actions, which were a bit not fair to Kyle and how he started out expected Nia to fall in like like all the other woman in his life and wait on him hand and foot. His crack comment to himself about how she is plain and plain women seem to want to please him all the time almost made me quit reading the book. What kept me going was Nia's reaction, she put him in his place so fast it was beautiful and she did it all the while not knowing who he was and how he held the town's future in his hands.
The time they spent trapped at the house was fun. Both of them could be themselves without any outside influence, which immediately stopped once Kyle's last name was uttered. From there things got very awkward. Nia did her best to save the town, Kyle was forced to listen, wanted to help, but was overrode. And that pretty much ended things for them.
I was surprised that Kyle sought out Nia after, but was glad he did. While things didn't quite work out like they wanted, he gave her the courage to make sure everyone knew she knew her worth. I liked where Nia ended up and how passionate she was about her new job. I also loved how Kyle came back into Nia's life and the changes he was going to bring. It made for a happy ending all around.
Wasn't sure if I'd like Kyle after being introduced to him in book 1, but he really grew on me here. I would have liked to know more about his character or Nia. Overall, I enjoyed the story despite wanting to shake Nia at times. This was a sweet read.
This was a pretty good story. Kyle Ellison comes to Candy, OH to shut down the town's Peppermint Factory because it's was not profitable to his family's company. Due to a snow storm, he is stuck with Nia at her grandmothers farmhouse for a few days. Unbeknownst to Nia, Kyle plans to dissolve thousands of jobs that she hoped to keep with her grandma's secret toffee recipe. Kyle and Nia start dating, their relationship weathers a few storms but in the end it's a HEA. The factory is reopened for business after Kyle discovers the toffee recipe among his deceased father's belongings.
Finding each other in a blizzard was the best thing to happen to both Nia and Kyle. Secrets, insecurities, a petty woman and business continue to push them apart. Nia was afraid to take a chance on love because of her mother's past and after being pushed away by Nia twice Kyle was not going to beg her to choose him. They were both miserable apart. After an unexpected visit from Kyle about business Nia decided to through caution to the wind and go after Kyle in a rain storm. A stalked truck and a rescue of Nia by Kyle puts them back on the path to love.
Snowbound with delicious candy and a delicious hero
This was a quick read that put me in an excellent Christmas mood - the hero and heroine get snowbound without phone or internet and so they play in the snow and watch bad movies! They're enemies but they don't know it until the outside world barges back in! There is delicious family recipe candy and a small town factory that the evil corporation wants to shut down! But of course everything works out in the end. It was delightfully tropey and I love how every wrapped up. This was a very fun read that just flew by.
WHO KNEW THAT SOMEONE'S LOVE OF CANDY WOULD LEAD THEM TO FIND THE PERSON THEY COULD SEE SPENDING FOREVER WITH. KYLE AND NIA'S STORY WAS A GREAT TALE OF SELF DISCOVERY, AND FINDING THE PERSON YOUR TRULY SUPPOSED TO BE INSIDE AND OUT. I FALL IN LOVE WITH THE BOOK EVERY TIME I READ IT.
Sweeter Temptation is part of a series that began with Taste For Temptation, but apart from the fact that the heroes of the two books are brothers, these books can stand alone pretty well. While this one doesn't seem as fun as the previous book, that's because, I feel, the story is too big for the Kimani format. But let's take a look at the synopsis first.
Kyle Ellison believes that he has what it takes to run the family business, but, unlike his brother Adam, he has always been perceived as the happy-go-lucky player that no one takes seriously. Adam has made it clear that he doesn't want to take over the family business, so Kyle wants to step in. But their uncle, who becomes the de facto captain in the place of their late father until things have settled down, isn't certain of Kyle's capabilities. Besides, that man has recently reconciled with his estranged son, and he wants to give that son a job. Kyle reasonably finds this upstart newcomer a threat - it is not hard to believe that his uncle would conveniently decide that his son is better suited to step in compared to Kyle. That man has already given his son a comfortably high post despite the brat's lack of experience, after all.
Therefore, it is important that Kyle succeeds in his latest assignment: to shut down Peppermint Lane Candy Co, a candy factory in - where else? - Candy, Ohio. His father purchased the factory shortly before his death, and nobody knows why. What they do know is that the venture is not a profitable one, so it's best to just hand out walking papers to the employees of that factory and move on with life.
Our heroine Nia King reluctantly puts her life on hold to come back to Candy precisely because of the rumors of the impending closure of the factory. It once belonged to her grandmother, and most of the town folks work for the factory. Shutting down Peppermint Lane Candy Co would mean shutting down the town as well. She would try to help her old friends to come up with some kind of proposal that can change the new owner's mind.
It is, therefore, rather inconvenient that both Nia and Kyle have some kind to get to know each other pretty well, thanks to a snowstorm that causes Kyle to end up stuck at Nia's place for a while, before they realize that they are going to be at opposite sides where the factory is concerned. What will happen now?
Nia and Kyle are so much fun together. What I like about Nia is that, when she describes herself as a woman with ordinary looks, she is not pretending to be humble. Kyle's initial impression of her is pretty much that, and he starts finding her attractive only after he starts to know her better. Nia has self-esteem issues stemming from her parents' unhappy marriage, while Kyle's "issue" is more of his conflicted feelings as he falls for Nia. He has worked so hard to prove himself, and all this while his only drive in life is to be the CEO of Ellison Industries. Can he walk away from his ambition, now that he's so close to achieving it?
Of course, this is a story with happy ending, so everyone gets what they want so everyone is deliriously blissed out in the end. Still, I never feel that the author has cut corners for her characters. Nia has to work to get over her own inner demons that threaten to ruin her relationship with Kyle, while Kyle discovers that he is capable of having a committed relationship with a woman that isn't just about fun times.
Kyle's character growth arc may seem superficial on paper, but the author manages to make the whole thing work. Kyle's falling in love has the guy feeling both flustered and unsure at the same time, which is so cute given his usual confident and even cocky demeanor. Nia's self-esteem issues are also dealt with pretty well. Despite the fact that her baggage is a familiar one, Nia's insecurities ring true and her epiphany is both real and heartwarming.
Here's the thing, though: as much as I enjoy following Nia and Kyle in their love story, I'm not sure that I can buy their happy ending. This story spends roughly half its page count on those two getting cozy in their snowed-in love nest, as the second half feels rather rushed as a result because there are many things happening in that second half and there isn't enough space to let these things work themselves out believably. Kyle and Nia don't know each other that well to rush straight into marriage. Given their chemistry, I'm sure they may like one another long enough to try and make things work, but their romance never gets the opportunity to develop more believably in its current accelerated pace.
If the story had ended with these two deciding to go ahead and keep seeing one another, I can buy that. But there is a marriage proposal here, so there is an element of finality and closure (for a romance novel) that I'm not entirely sure I'd buy wholesale. If the author had another hundred or so pages to play, perhaps the romance would develop in a more believable pace and I'd feel differently.
Still, it's been a fun ride despite everything. So far it is two out of two, and I'm pretty interested to see whether the author can keep this track record up.
I love how Kyle and Nia met. It set the book up in a romantic way. I felt that Nia character was sweet yet stern. I like how Kyle has whole from the first book.
I read Jinx a while back and was waiting for more from this author. Didn't realize she had more books. I enjoyed the book and was not let down by the ending.
I received this book through Goodreads first reads giveaways and am giving an honest review.
First off I just want to say that the book cover is very nice lol.
Nia King came back to her home town of Candy, Ohio to care for her ailing grandmother who had raised her. Unfortunately her grandmother passed away and Nia is left with a lot to take care of. Nia's grandmother had been mayor of Candy and spent her final days trying to save the peppermint factory for which the town had been named. Now Nia feels it's her duty to continue with her grandmother's plans, sadly the stroke that eventually took her grandmother's life also took her ability to speak or write so Nia had no idea what that plan could be. A recent college graduate with a speciality in city planning, Nia comes up with her own wonderful idea for saving the factory and in effect the town. Now all she has to do is get one of the Ellisons, the factory's new owners, to hear her out.
Kyle Ellison knows that he deserved to be the CEO of his family business, especially now that his father has passed and his older brother left the company, but he still has to prove himself to his Uncle Jon the acting CEO. Klye's latest assignment is to head out to Candy, Ohio and shut down the factory that has not been making any money for his family. Unfortunately doing that will result in the loss of 2, 000 jobs. But Klye decides it must be done.
An unexpected blizzard leaves Kyle stranded in his car on a back road outside of Candy. Luckily Nia is driving by and finds him. And the only logical thing to do is bring him home with her so they could both be safe and warm. Although it is freezing outside Nia and Kyle feel instant heat for each other. Nia is not one to have a one night stand but even she can't fight her attraction to the tall, dark, and handsome Kyle. Nia is not usually the type of women Kyle goes for but after being trapped inside a farmhouse with her he discovers just how beautiful she is inside and out. Kyle can't keep his mind or his hands off of Nia and they haven't even exchanged last names.
All to soon the storm clears. The snow plows come and Nia discovers that Kyle is one of the elusive Ellisons only he isn't in town to hear her plans but rather to shut down the factory. Even after Nia presents her plan Kyle does what he was sent there to do and Nia can no longer separate the man who she spent the best night of her life with from the man who has, in her eyes, destroyed her town.
Kyle sets out to convince Nia that he was never her enemy, in fact he was only doing his job and what's best for his family. But new problems arise when Nia begans to doubt both herself and Kyle's feelings for her.
Sweeter Temptation was a very enjoyable, easy, and entertaining read. I liked both Kyle and Nia a great deal and the chemistry between them was amazing. I loved the little Cinderella spin because every girl deserves a fairytale. I was very happy that both Nia and Kyle figured out that they were not their parents and that ultimately they had control over the lives they live. And as always I love that a happily ever after was reached not just for our hero and heroine but for the town of Candy as well and I especially applaud the author for making it happen without making Kyle compromise his beliefs.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light entertaining romance that puts a new spin on a sweet fairytale.
This is the first time I've ever read a Harlequin book. I've heard so many mixed reviews about many Harlequin books being sort of 'hit or miss', but it seems I lucked out when I picked up this one from the bookstore.
I finished this book in less than a day. I could not put it down. This book, which has a 'millionaire romance' kind of flair to it, was absolutely amazing, and the twist at the end made it even better.
The heroine, Nia King, is trying to do all she can to prevent a candy factory in her hometown from shutting down. The hero, Kyle Ellison, takes a trip to Candy, Ohio to see that the shutdown happens, but along the way, he's stranded in a snowstorm, and is rescued by Nia and taken to her late grandmother's house to ride out the storm. As you can imagine, sparks fly during the time the two of them are holed up in the house waiting for the blizzard to pass. She finds out what Kyle's reasons for coming to Candy was for and tries to convince him not to shut down the factory. Unfortunately Kyle's business decision is made, and as a result their relationship becomes a little rocky.
I won't reveal any more than that, because there's an interesting 'sweet' twist that ends this story in a happily ever after. I thought the twist wouldn't come until much earlier, but it surprised me when it came within the last two chapters of the book, which just made my heart swell.
The characters were all likable. Of course, I liked Kyle, but I even liked the heroine, Nia, which is really rare for me to like heroines in books.
I didn't realize that this was book 2 in the author's 'Temptation' series, and after reading the description of the first one, 'Taste for Temptation,' I will have to check it out. Book 1 follows the story of Adam and Brandi, who also make an appearance in 'Sweeter Temptation.' I will definitely be checking out that and future books by this author!
I never thought I could love Kyle at all, let alone more than Adam, but I do. He really came off crass and unlikeable in the first book but that really wasn’t who he was. He really wanted love and never really got that at all from his Dad or any other source. Nia didn’t know her worth, even though she had so much to offer the world. Them coming together was healing for both of them. Kyle got someone to see him and truly love him and Nia found her worth separate from what she did or what she looked like. I so need a follow up on these couples! Loved them both but I love Kyle for being true to himself and not allowing his lack of love growing up to harden him completely.
This was a very cute story and I REALLY enjoyed the main characters. The character development was on point, where I felt like I knew them and knew what to expect from them. One of my favorite parts is how they met - the snow storm. Oh, and the candy (her grandmother's recipe) had my mouth watering with every mention of it! This was an enjoyable read and I would definitely reommend it. I didn't give it a five because the ending was just okay to me.
I enjoyed reading about Kyle he finally decided to get serious and found the love of his life. Nia's not someone Kyle would've given a second look if he saw her in the street. Then because of circumstances beyond his control he begins to see The beauty within her. I love the twists and turns in this book wish there were more Brothers to read about nicely done.
I brought this book in Miami-Dade airport 9/21/13 read over 1/2 of it on a 4 hour flight to Phoenix. This is my first read from this author and I throughly enjoyed this story. I felt like I was watching a movie and was rooting for the actors. Kyle and Nia were very interesting and kept my attention good job Phyllis I look forward to your other stories.
What I have liked most about the Temptation series is the good girl wins. Sometimes we count ourselves out as women because we're not the world's airbrushed rendition of beauty, but these stories let us know that the beauty we possess on the inside is what real men want.
In the small town of Candy, Ohio on a cold dark stormy night Nia King, stops to help stranded stranger Kyle Ellison. Their worlds are turned up side down. Both are clueless to the connection they have. Warm your heart as they work through this mystery to learn the truth.
This is the 2nd book I read by Phyllis Bourne. When I read the description of this book I wanted to read it. The storyline wasn't interesting to me & a little boring. The only thing I liked about this story was Kyle. I liked Taste For Temptation was better than this one.
Page turning romance I couldn't put down. I love the trope of snowed-in potential lovers. SWEETER TEMPTATION delivers the goods. This is the first book I've read by Phyllis Bourne, but I will be looking for more.
Opposites attract was that thought that came to mind when reading this! I loved the concept! These kind of books are the best romance books for me! Ms. Bourne has done it again for me. I can't wait to dive into another one of her stories!
I don’t know which one I liked better, the first or second book. I could definitely see similarities between Adam and Kyle but this book was a great read. I loved the connection the two had, and I loved how they both changed each other for the better.
Kyle and Nia were a decent couple, I just couldn't get into their love story. Kyle seemed to be a good guy, but I would've liked to know more about his background, as well as Nia's.
Okay, I didn't really care for Kyle after reading the first one and even a few chapters in to this one I was still skeptical. But now I love him. Nia was amazing. The way they met and everything about their love story was awesome.
Well, I did not expect Kyle to fall in love so deep but he did and I love it. I could not put this book down until I finished it. I so would recommend it...
