I had previously read the 14 “Mitch Rapp” hero-and-thriller novels which Vince Flynn wrote, and the previous four that Kyle Mills wrote in the same vein after Flynn’s death. I always look forward to the annual editions, because I consider this series to be the gold standard for books of this type.
This latest version, makes me think that maybe it’s time for this series to be done. Kyle Mills is not the writer that Vince Flynn was. He did OK originally, but I think the material is just getting too picked over, it’s getting too implausible, and in this version Mills doesn’t make the character the compelling hero that all the other novels managed to do. In doing a 20 year book series, you have to age your character, and with Mitch Rapp now in his mid-forties, after getting blown up and broken bones in every installment, it’s just inevitable that he can’t be the super-hero fighter believably anymore. And after a couple decades and so many lost loves, it isn’t possible to weave the same story of Mitch fighting in spite of some girlfriend back home anymore.
It’s time to move on. But hey, if you didn’t read the earlier novels, they’re still gems, and the stories do not age, they could still be read and be pertinent.
