this book was originally published in 1961, so much of the information is very outdated or even potentially illegal (home-building directions/advice), but it still remains a good resource for inspiration on how to live an ultra-frugal "pinching pennies till they squeal" life. The author covers everything from cooking in hotel rooms or rented rooms in somebody else's house, to foraging, herbal remedies, refurbishing worn out furniture and clothing, making toys from cast-off materials, building one's own home, and even vacationing on a budget.

For a modern life, I don't know that this book would be the first thing I'd recommend, but for somebody needing either to see how folks managed in past decades or for those who need inspiration, I would certainly suggest this book as additional reading on frugality and thriftiness.

I first read this in middle school and I still turn to it periodically to keep me inspired -- especially important during tough times. Focuses not on how bad it is when money is short, but on how much you can do in spite of that. Tons of good ideas in here. Some of them are rather dated, but many are still useful, and all of them will get you thinking up your own strategies.

This is an interesting read but it is an older book and much of the information is so dated I just skimmed over a few of the chapters.

I've just finished the 1961 edition. The topics discussed are relevant again, and the advise very timely.
