SEAL Team Six #4

Hunt the Jackal

Rate this book
Real-life SEAL Don Mann brings all of his insight and experience to the next installment of the SEAL Team Six series.
When a senator's wife and teenage daughter are kidnapped, Thomas Crocker and SEAL Team Six are sent to Mexico's lawless countryside, where federal agents protect instead of hunting down violent narcotics kingpins. The two women have been kidnapped by the Jackal, a drug lord drunk on power and influence. He also happens to be a self-styled modern Che Guevara, who has undergone plastic surgery to disguise his looks and justifies his brutal methods and Machiavellian drug empire with the politics of social revolution. The Jackal is as ruthless as he is colorful, and he must be stopped.

Crocker and the SEALs have only a matter of hours to track down and rescue the two innocent civilians held at the mercy of this madman. With dirty cops, dangerous cartels, lavish tropical estates, double-crosses and plenty of bullets, Hunt the Jackal places the team in perilous new territory and demonstrates how elite warriors can adapt to and fight in any situation.

With insight into sensitive intelligence so top-secret it can only be hinted at in fiction, Mann and Pezzullo's extensive knowledge has, for several books, offered a look behind the curtain at the life-or-death, black-ops missions executed by only a handful of the bravest soldiers. Now, with Hunt the Jackal, the authors focus their lens even closer to home upon the dangers that lurk just across the U.S. border in a pulse-pounding thriller that ups the ante even as it sheds light on the real-life heroes and villains of the fight against narco-terrorism.

What kind of man is so patriotic that they would undergo brutal training, live a danger-filled life that is deep black ops? Men like Tom Crocker and his SEAL Team, who are called in when there is no other choice and the mission is impossible. Once again, the Seal Team is called in to rescue a diplomat’s wife and daughter from the hands of Mexican terrorists and narcotics cartel. With little time to plan their mission, they are ambushed and the kidnap victims are nowhere to be found. There is a traitor on the inside, as time races to the finish, Crocker and his team now has two agendas, find the traitor and find the women, alive.

Hunt the Jackal by Don Mann once again, takes the reader to the frontline of the bravest and best fighting machines around. Once again, we see the human side of their job, the devastation each mission can have on each soldier. Don Mann has created a gritty and dark world that flies by chaotically as action is coming in from all directions. For this type of read, I don’t want my heroes to be more than human, I want to know they are every bit as good as the real men who have faced down the enemy, every bit as human and that is exactly what Mr. Mann has given us. For those who enjoy a high tension, non-stop military thriller, here is your next great read.

“Seal Team Six: Hunt the Jackal” finds Tom Crocker, seal team leader of the “black cell” team, trying to rescue the wife and daughter of a U. S. Senator from the clutches of a vengeful Mexican drug lord.

Tom Crocker and his team are called in when a situation looks hopeless. They risk everything in order to get the job done. There are some really evil people in the world and warriors like these are the only thing that stands between us and those who wish to destroy us for their own evil purposes.

This book is outstanding. It is definitely the best in the “Seal Team Six” series. This book even begins to show a side of Tom Crocker that reveals his beliefs in a world beyond this one. Tom becomes more of a real person, with thoughts and feelings beyond the current battle. He is becoming a more complex character, and I find that makes the story more than just “the good guy vs. the bad guy”. The book was really well-done and I highly recommend it.

SUBJECTIVE REVIEW FOLLOWS:

I just got introduced to Dom Mann, and I can assure you I'll read every other book he's written within the next month. Mann's experience as a SEAL shows through, and his mastery of state of the art weaponry is incredible. The storyline for Hunt the Jackal is excellent, believable and scary. Any action adventure/thriller fan will love this book, and I say that with much assurance. Mann captures the Mitch Rapp and Scot Harvath and brings it home to ass-kicking realism that I will forever miss with the passing of Vince Flynn. If you don't like action thriller suspense and violence, don't bother with this book. Leave it to the rest of us who inhale it. I considered while I was reading this book whether I was going to assign four or five stars, but by the end of it there was no holding back. Enjoy the ride folks!

SPOILER PLOT SUMMARY FOLLOWS:

Hunt the Jackal. SEAL Team Six (DEVGRU) team leader Tom Crocker is a member of Black Cell, the group that gets the shit assignments and is recovering a downed drone in Syria when things go wrong and he loses two of his teammates. While trying to recover from this setback, SEN Jesse Clark, a former SEAL, finds his wife Lisa and daughter Olivia are kidnapped from their vacation sap in Sedona, NM. Tom worms his way onto the assignment to go recover the two women in Mexico, facing up to the most brutal Mexican gangs. They find their quarry in Guadalajara, but are tipped off on the way from a CIA safe house and find the women gone and the Federales coming in for the kill. After taking numerous wounds, they escape and find the CIA safe house empty, all the employees beheaded. They regroup with the Mexico CIA CoS and discover the women have been flown to Tapachula, on the border with Guatemala. Black Cell attacks the hacienda and rescues Lisa Clark, but the Jackal and Olivia are nowhere to be found. After overnight CIA/NSA analysis of the airplane Ivan fled in, they are discovered to be in Havana, and medical reports on Jouma's health indicate that he cannot live without a liver transplant and that the abduction was more about his survival than any political agenda. Black Cell parachutes to the Cuban coastline, find Olivia just at the doctor is slicing her abdomen open and take down the place, killing Jouma. They hijack a US pleasure craft in a Havana marina and get Olivia back in time. Meanwhile, Jouma has put his henchmen to find Crocker and Mancini's family in Virginia and kill them in revenge for the two destroyed haciendas in southern Mexico. Tom arrives as the Mexican hit men have his house staked out and is able to save his wife and daughter, but his daughter's friend dies in the attack.

SEAL Team Six: Hunt the Jackal was written by Don Mann. In this book a U.S. Senator's wife and daughter were kidnapped by the Jackal, a Mexican drug lord. Tom Crocker and the members of SEAL team six were sent to Mexico to save the two women. This book is one of the better books that I have read. I would put this book in my top five favorite books. I really enjoyed the book because it was action packed, filled with excitement, and had many interesting plot twists. One thing that I really liked about this book was the bond between the members of SEAL team six. The team worked very smooth and well together and they all were willing to sacrifice their lives for each other. One strength about this book is that it had a very fast pace and always left me wondering what would happen next. There was nothing about this book that I didn't like and I felt that the book had no weaknesses.

Riveting! I didn't put this book down!

The reader is the fly on the shoulder of Crocker as Seal Team Six pursues the leader of a Mexican drug cartel who has kidnapped an influental senator's wife and daughter. National lines are crossed, split-second decisions are made, the latest equipment is used, and politics be damned.

The reader gets a taste of the danger some of our nation's heros walk into on a regular basis, the emotional toll it takes on them and the sacrifices made by their families who share them with us.

My Review Of "Hunt the Jackal":

From opening lines to the last word; "Hunt the Jackal" is a fast moving novel that pulls the reader in and holds them hostage as they read of Seal Six Team's latest mission. Join Thomas Crocker and his team as they jump off the pages and bring this story to life for the reader. Don Mann's experience in the Seals shows in every scene and each and every character.

As one who prefers the light cozy and humorous romance this is definitely not my usual genre of choice. Yet since I opened the first book in this series "Hunt the Wolf" I have not been able to stop wanting more. Te series will touch something deep in the soul of those who have served and those who have had to wave good bye to them. Thank you to all who have done so, know that I keep you all in my prayers daily. Thank you to Don Mann for allowing us a glimpse into the world we fear and dread for families and friends, but can never thank them enough for the bravery they display each day they live it. My rating of "Hunt the Jackal" is 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Not for the faint of heart for sure. This is the first book I've read by this author, I wasn't lost so a standalone.

Story is filled with descriptive violence, murder of friends and villains, Lord's name used in vain and cruse words used. Some editing issues, but you can figure it out. Sometimes the banter was filled with humor at just the right times. Great secondary characters too.

Trigger - rape! Heat level 5 out of 5.

At times I wanted more info because something was resolved or ended and no extra details. Other times, too many details on things that didn't need it.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. (ljb)

I love the storyline and the accuracy of the plot. It makes one proud to be an American and a Veteran. The characters are believable and likeable. It would be a pleasure to serve with them.

SEAL Team Six book four, Hunt the Jackal by Don Mann and Ralph Pezzullo hits it really close to home with a fight against a Mexican drug cartel. It was amazing how fast I read through this book, aside from usual mommy duties that take me away from reading, it seemed like I zipped right trough it. It was probably the best one yet, action packed and suspenseful that had me not wanting to put it down. Unlike the other three this didn't really have an extended slow part in the story; it flowed nicely from beginning to end.

U.S. Senator's wife and daughter, Lisa and Olivia Clark are kidnapped right out of their Hotel room in Sedona, Arizona by one of the notorious Mexican drug cartels. Held for ransom the release of their people in American prison's will bring them home if not their heads will be sent home in a box.

Black Cell is flying over territory trying to retrieve a drone that crashed. Everything is going smooth they are successful in finding the fallen drone, then during the recovery their helicopter crashes killing all but one. Crocker and his remaining men are surrounded my enemy soldiers and barely make it all out. Crocker dealing with the after affects of the trauma is having a hard time dealing until he sees that his friend and former SEAL, U.S. Senator Clark on the news talking about his wife and daughter. Crocker feels the best way to feel better is to help someone else in need. He asks his C.O. but Captain Sutter denies his request at first but one sly call to his old friend and the joint forces of the FBI and DEA accept the help from Black Cell for the recovery of the Clark woman.

Ivan Jouma also know as El Chacal, The Jackal, is the head of Los Zetas and the responsible party for kidnapping. He spouts a bunch of nonsense blaming American on a bunch of stuff but it's all a crock, he has ulterior motives for the kidnapping. Keeping the woman drugged and comfortable he is just bidding his time. We also see the side of the story from Lisa's POV, which is a nice touch.

Black Cell undercover once again this time in Guadalajara, Mexico with their FBI/DEA team with the deadline looming closer finally get the sources and track down where the woman are being held. Plans are made and executed but the compound is empty and they walked straight into a trap and just barely make it out. By the time they make it back to the safe house they find the entire team dead with their heads on the coffee table. Turns out their was a leak and Jouma was warned. Tracking back the leak they find the new place the woman are being held. With the tentative relations between the U.S. and Mexico the chances of Black Cell being able to go and rescue them.

The deadline minutes away, Crocker makes the choice to rescue them knowing the corrupt Mexican Federales aren't going to save them. Meanwhile Lisa Clark makes a statement and talks about her time captive. Senator Clark has high hopes of her being returned. Crocker and his men execute a quick infiltration of the property the Clark woman are supposed to be but only find Lisa Clark, Jouma and Olivia no where to be found the house on fire and the Federales on their tales Crocker and Mancini stay behind to keep the other escape clear, and meet up with everyone in Panama City. The Mexican government very upset about it and Crocker taking the blame, the authorities have released that Olivia died in the house fire, but Crocker and Mrs. Clark and the rest of Black Cell know better and with the information from Mrs. Clark and the info Crocker got from the rescue they know where Olivia is and why. Black Cell then goes in a clandestine mission into Cuba to rescue Olivia Clark.

There is one thing left unanswered, well at least I don't remember, and I wonder if it will come up in the next book?? I hope so. This is my favorite of the four books and this wraps up my "SEAL Team Six Saturday". Go forth and enjoy some good reads.

Lisa Clark is wife of Jesse Abrams Clark Senior Senator of Virginia and mother of Jesse Jr. and Olivia who is on vacation with Olivia in Arizona before she leaves for the fall semester at Duke University. Lisa and Olivia are separately enjoying the amenities in different rooms of the spa condominium when they are abducted by crewmembers of the narcoterrorist group Los Zetas whose leader is Ivan Jouma better known as The Jackal.

Meanwhile, the Black Cell navy seal team is in Syria attempting to locate and destroy a downed predator drone without the permission of Syrian government to enter the country. Crocker, Davis, Daly, and Mancini are dropped to the ground in the area of the drone and Ritchie and Cal remain on the helicopter (helio) with the pilot and co-pilot. The ground team has completed their mission and waiting for return of the helio at the previous agreed pickup time, which the helio never arrives. Crocker and Daly search for the missing aircraft and discover the wreckage with the pilot, co-pilot, and Ritchie dead in addition to Cal who has severe injuries that require immediate medical attention. After returning to the states, Black Cell has a new assignment to pinpoint the location of and rescue Senator Clark’s missing wife and daughter, Lisa and Olivia from their captor. The abductor Ivan Jouma (The Jackal) made it clear in a letter to Senator Clark that he will deliver a beheaded Lisa to him if forty Mexican criminal detainees are not released within three days. The Jackal has more than one purpose for kidnapping the Clark women and Black Cell must accelerate efforts of the rescue mission to prevent the hostage’s deaths and their own termination by the hands of the Los Zetos terrorist cluster.

Installment four of the SEAL Team Six series is an action-packed enjoyable read full of adventure novel in addition to the emotional excitement. This novel exposes a sentimental and emotive characteristic of team leader Crocker never before observed in the previous books of the series installment. I recommend this novel to fans of the SEAL Team Six series and military drama aficionados who seek engaging action reading in a day.

I received this novel free from the Net Galley Reviewer Program in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.

There was a time I was a voracious reader of war novels. Then, for some obscure reason, I drifted into other genres and lost my interest. But I’m glad I read “Seal Team Six: Hunt the Jackal.” The excitement returned, the interest in weaponry and its evolution returned, and heroic deeds of brave men once again seemed energizing.

I thank the authors for reviving my interest. Don Mann, the ex-Seal, and Ralph Pezzullo, the writer, have combined their talents into a well conceived and fast paced adventure of the military operations conducted by our super sailors, the members of Seal Team Six. I suspect that Mann has many magnificent stories to relate, some of which might prompt Pezzullo to urge for a little restraint, but the overall team effort is exciting and informative with just enough credible heroics to keep the story moving.

This is not the usual war story in that the operations are conducted against the Mexican drug scene. However, cartels operate like small armies with highly trained and vicious “soldiers” using modern weapons with explosive firepower. There are also more clandestine operations giving the story a personal flavor as compared to the large scale troop conflicts. In the case of this book, where a Seal team is utilized to rescue a United States Senator’s wife and daughter from drug cartel kidnappers, the operations are very much the same as those used in what we might consider normal warfare with a smaller cast.

The operations are realistic, the dialogue is what we’d expect from a group of macho tough guys, the sentimental thoughts and tender moments are memorable and appropriate, and a sense of patriotism is invoked in the midst of the violence and murder our heroes encounter. The pace is swift and the excitement never wanes. My only negative thought throughout the book concerned the repeated name-dropping of celebrities. I’m not sure what the idea was but there was too much of that. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the trip.

Apparently the authors have created a series of these Seal Team Six missions. I intend to explore them and, based on this particular effort, would recommend the entire series for lovers of this type of adventure.

I found this to be a very fast pace, action-packed and realistic read. The story is filled with politics, drug wars, unethical US policies and danger with everything pointing to greed, truth and trust.

While in Serbia on a mission Captain Crooker loses a few of his men. Due to his choices which at the time he thought was the best and safest place for them they died. Ritchie was due to be married in a few weeks. Crooker felt the guilty and felt he made a bad choice and his friend lost his life. I would have to agree with Captain Crooker I would have thought that was the safest place for him as well. I do understand why Crooker felt the guilt.

I felt this book was very realistic, it does help that one of the author’s was in a SEAL Team Six himself and the others father Foreign Service of the State Department. I feel that the author knows what he is talking about and most likely lived through a lot of what he writes. This book is written more on one soldier’s point of view which gives it a more real feeling. The author gives you real insight to the humor, the BSing that macho men give each other but still keeps in the guidelines of what a military personal deal with, honor, team work, along with heroic deeds of brave men that make our military what they are today, and above all else never leave a man behind.

When Crooker found out that the Senator's family was kidnapped (Senator who was a former Seal team six member and someone who helped Ritchie). Crooker felt this was one way he could give back to Richie and his memory.

This is one book that moves fast and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I truly enjoy this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

However, reading different genre always helps to expand the mind and keeps readers from becoming bored with one specific genre.

I have always heard the devil in the details. With this book that is so true. Who better to write a book than someone who was once in a classified military position?

I do wonder why the author had to throw in Fifty Shades of Grey. Come on really. I have not read the book and probably never will. Just not my cup of tea.

Sometimes while reading I felt like it was a mission report. Maybe it is because I know nothing about the military.

I personally do not know if all the equipment and everything state while on a mission is something actually used but it made for very interesting reading.

SEAL Team Six Chief Warrant Officer Tom Crocker doesn't care about regional politics. Just his mission. He's intense, focused, and bull-headed, but the kind of guy you want on your side.

As Black Cell, the top secret compartmentalized cell at SEAL Team Six, wraps up a mission in Syria to blow up a downed MQ-1B Predator drone before the terrorists purloin it for their own mission, a kidnapping is taking place in Sedona, Arizona.

Lisa Clark, beauty pageant contestant and wife of Senior Republican senator from Virginia, Senator Jesse Abrams Clark, and her daughter, Olivia, are taken hostage for reasons only known to the Mexican drug cartel, Los Zetas and their leader, Ivan Jouma—the Jackal.

Crocker and his team must rescue them, while battling their own personal issues.

It may be cliche, but the book is non-stop action. You'll be introduced to the SEAL Team Six tools of the trade: AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, Hk416 assault rifles, MP7s, SIG Sauer P226 handguns, M203s, Heckler & Kock automatic pistols, MP7A1 submachine guns, NVG's, etc.

The banter of the guys as they perform their missions, the emotional swings as they deal with their fallen friends, the red-tape snags and the tension they generate, the tug between the team members' jobs and their families creates a multi-layered suspense story you'll stay awake to finish.

My only caveat is that the dialogue, actions, and physical descriptions of the female characters come across as contrived. I haven't read the previous books in the series but this issue does not take away from this Thomas Crocker adventure.

Seal Team Six: Hunt the Jackal is the fourth in Don Mann’s Seal Team series, but it is the first of his books that I have read. I have, however, read Seal Team Six novels written by another former SEAL. There are some similarities between the stories portrayed by both former SEALS, as well as some differences. After reading Hunt the Jackal, however, I feel like I have a better sense of which parts of the novels may accurately portray SEAL Team Six.

In Mann’s latest Tom Crocker action/adventure thriller, the primary plot line involves the wife and daughter of a U.S. Senator who have been kidnapped by members of one of the Mexican drug cartels run by a man known as the Jackal. The recovery of the hostages falls to Crocker and his team. Although most of the novel deals with the kidnapping, we briefly follow Crocker’s team through an unrelated mission in Syria, and we also learn a bit about the personal lives of these SEALS.

I am not, in general, an action thriller reader. However, I am fascinated by the SEALS and enjoy reading about them. We are so fortunate to have these amazing people working for us. I am grateful for, envious of, and curious about SEAL Team Six, and I gladly devour these novels.

Mann wrote Seal Team Six: Hunt the Jackal with the help of Ralph Pezzullo, a New York Times bestselling author, and it shows. Although the book feels somewhat frenetic in its pace, it is a good read. It keeps the reader riveted and on the edge of her seat. I look forward to the next hunt by Crocker’s team.

Seal Team Six: Hunt the Jackal by Don Mann and Ralph Pezzullo is one hell of a thrilling ride. This book starts off with Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Crocker in deep doo-doo. He's leading his Black Cell group on a very discreet mission in Syria and the shit really hits the fan. Helicopter down, pilot gone, several soldiers dead and another dying---and Crocker's medical training is needed as much as his ability to lead his team. It's quite a ride and that just introduces the team--the real action takes place when Seal Team Six is sent into Mexico to rescue a Senator's wife and daughter from a maverick drug lord nick named Jackal.

I was very impressed with the writing. It reflects the nature of the book. It's brisk, brusque at times, and very active. The writing is so intense that you feel like the action is taking place all around you. You can't help but think about what an incredible movie this would make, but in the meantime you should read this book. It's an adrenaline laced roller coaster ride through hell. But in a good way!

This was a highly entertaining read.
It is a fictional, military thriller that explores a series of special operations of the U.S. Seal Team Six.
The writing is good, the characters are both interesting and multi-dimensional.
There were several Interesting plot twists that served to complicate the teams efforts and added to the excitement of this read. I enjoyed seeing how the team adapted to the new challenges during their mission.
I particularly enjoyed the details used to describe the execution of the operations; which give a bird's-eye view to the reader.
I had not read previous books in the series, yet I was able to step into the world and connect with the characters with little difficulties.
Future readers should be advised that the stories contain graphic violence which is not suitable for young and or sensitive readers.
Other than that one caution, I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy suspenseful, action-packed, military thrillers.
I know that I will be reading on in this series!

Hunt the Jackal: Seal team six: Review
Crocker has fought many battles; the last one affected his wife in his attempt to solve the problems of the Middle East. But with all his training, all his skills and those of his team mates he is not ready for his next mission. He is distracted by his wife’s slow recovery. The loss he feels in the casualties of war, and personnel. In this book, he will lose his closest friend, and team member. He will be tested by the diabolical Mexican mafia king pin, and he may not only survive but place his family into more danger then he ever thought possible.
This is a great book showing the price of war, even if it’s just political ideals rampaging, or the politics of the banking world. The cost in human lives and the personal abilities of those individuals that pledge their lives, and fortunes to the military service to protect our freedoms and our very lives. Hunt the Jackal is another page turning thriller that looks at the truth of the real world, and the sacrifice of the men and women who serve their country with honor, humility, and bravery.

I received this book from Net Galley for my opinion on this book. This book was written differently then the 3 previously books. The 3 other books were written in only Tom Crockers perspective but this book was written with several different people's perspective. It was interesting to see things from different perspectives and to see what other people were doing at a certain time and which we wouldn't normally know what was going on in their head. This was a sad book to start off with and ended sad. There was a lot of action in this book just not as much as compared to the other books. I didn't like Lisa and could have done with hearing her point of view. I still read through this book quickly and was entertained through out the book. There was more of a background story to this one compared to the others with the different views in the story. The book still flowed really well and the action was high. I do hope there are more books about Tom Crocker and his team, though I think he should retire after this last mission.
