The new book in the bestselling Reverend Curtis Black series!

The Reverend Curtis Black hasn't spoken to his son, Matthew, in over a year-not since Matthew dropped out of Harvard to marry his girlfriend, Racquel, and be a full-time father to their infant son. Curtis knows that it was he and his wife, Charlotte, who drove Matthew away, but he prays that one day his son will forgive them and come home.

Matthew, however, can't seem to forget the pain his parents caused him and Racquel. Still, he wonders if maybe they'd been right, as fatherhood is not what he expected, and Racquel's behavior has become increasingly erratic. Matthew genuinely wants to be a good husband, though, and swears he'll never repeat his parents' mistakes. But when an old friend expresses her desire for Matthew, the temptation may be too great to resist...

Then, there's Dillon Whitfield-Curtis's long-lost-son-who has settled in as a member of the Black family. Yet the transition has been anything but easy. Charlotte, convinced he's only after Curtis's money, wishes he would move back to where he came from. Dillon, however, has no intention of going anywhere. After a lifetime in the shadows, he's determined to take his rightful place as Curtis's first-born son and heir, and he'll do whatever it takes to win his father's affection -- even if it means playing dirty...

As jealousy builds and secrets pile up, both of Curtis's sons will be pushed over the edge and forced to take drastic action. Can these two troubled young men find their way back into the Black family fold, or will their family ties be undone once and for all?

The Prodigal Son is drama from the beginning. DRAMA!!!!! For those aware of Kimberla Lawson Roby's Reverend Curtis Black series, it comes as no surprise that this latest addition continues with the trend.

The Prodigal Son follows the lives of Matthew and Dillion. Both are connected only by the blood they share courtesy of their promiscuous father Rev. Black... and that's about all they share. Matthew seems like a genuinely nice guy who's between a rock and a hard place. He's torn between loyalty to his wife after his mother attempts to break up their "happy" home, and the people who raised him. Matthew hasn't spoken to his parents since Charlotte told DCFS that his wife, Racquel, was abusive towards their infant son causing a brief period where they were not even able to see their child outside of protective custody. Like I said... DRAMA!!!

Dillon on the other hand is Rev. Black's first born. He's also the only one of the Black's who was raised outside of the luxury afforded a mega-pastor. Dillon is bitter, vindictive, conniving, and explosive. I haven't come across a character I've detested more in a long time. The only problem I have with him (besides all the above mentioned flaws) is that I feel bad for him. He just wants his father's love and attention. After being ignored your whole life from someone who makes up 50% of your DNA, being a little crazy is the least of your worries.

On to the writing. This novel, The Prodigal Son is written simply. It's not the highest form of literature but honestly, I could care less how philosophical a book is so long as it grabs my attention. Roby grabbed my attention and never let go. It's a great beach read when you need your fill of craziness.

The Prodigal Son reminds me of the days of my youth. I was raised in my family's church, although small, it had it's drama. I am often reminded of how contradicting church folk can be. Roby cautions that no matter what church, the size of its congregation, or the "righteousness" of the saints, there is no human walking on Earth that is perfect. Certainly not any of the characters in this book. Characters who all seem to have an ulterior motive.

In conclusion, although I haven't read any of the preceding novels in this series, I don't feel like I've missed much. She sets the stage well and recaps the previous novels in a way that makes me only want to move forward. Fans of the Rev. Curtis Black series will love this latest installment.

Title : Well done!

Matthew, Rev. Curtis' Black's son, has found himself in a situation that he never imagined would be his life. A year ago he became a teenage father, dropped out of Harvard and married his son's mother. Still brewing on the fact that his mother, Charlotte, had taken matters into her hands and practically destroyed his wife, Raquel; Matthew distanced himself from Reverend and First Lady Black for more than a year. Sadly, things get worse! He needs his family but can he ever return home?

Dillon, Pastor Black's long-lost son, has tried for the last year to become a real member of the Black family but to his disappointment he still feels like an outsider. Not being able to shake his rage causes Dillon to take matters into his own hands. Sadness turns into fury which becomes his driving force. How far will Dillon go to become the apple of his father's eye? He wants more than anything for Curtis to welcome him back with open arms.

In this novel, Kimberla Lawson Roby tells a very intriguing story surrounding Curtis Black's two sons. What impressed me the most was the way she drew me into the story and wrapped me up in the emotions of the main characters. This story had just the right amount of suspense, drama and love that created a literary masterpiece that is sure to please her current fans and attract new ones. More importantly she honestly yet tactfully addressed very important issues that plague our nation. She gave us enough enjoyment to make me say WELL DONE! She gave us something to think about as well. Great writing! Excellent character development. I absolutely loved it. FIVE STARS!!!!!

Rev Curtis Black and his dysfunctional family are back. As both of his sons, Matthew and Dillon fight for love, the battle becomes more than anyone bargained for.

Matthew’s marriage to Racquel spins out of control fast in The Prodigal Son. He reminisces about his life before his marriage and how he wished he had listened to his parents and stayed in school. Unable to turn back the hands of time, Matthew does what he needs to do for his family.

Long lost son Dillon is sick and tired of feeling like an outsider. He wants to have the same type of closeness with Rev. Black that his siblings have but it doesn’t seem like it is going to happen. The more Dillon does to get his dad’s attention, the more it backfires on him.

Throughout this story, you will see how sometimes we love someone so much, we put their happiness in front of our own. We may try to make things work but if it is in God's plan, it will happen.

The two least likely people form a comradery and they plan to take down everyone in the Black family. Will Dillon finally get his father’s love? Will Matthew and Racquel be able to live happily ever after?

Kimberla Lawson Roby continues to pen a novel of suspense, lots of drama and revenge that will leave you turning the pages well into the night.

You have to one click this interesting read.

I mostly gave this one three stars because I read it before, and couldn’t quite tell if everything was uber-predictable because of that, or just because The Prodigal Son features the same old plot lines we’ve come to expect.

To its credit, the eleventh Reverend Curtis Black novel is the most successful at interspersing narratives of Curtis’ various family members—here, his two sons. I mostly enjoyed the twists and turns, but knew them a bit too well to get much out of this one.

As the title suggests, Kimberla Lawson Roby penned a delightful tale of a son's journey home. But there is more to The Prodigal Son than that story. The author covered several dramatic topics with unexpected turns, which had me turning the pages until the end. It took me less than 2 days to read and it would've been shorter if only I didn't have to work, eat or sleep. Readers will enjoy our hero's growth process as he learns how to forgive and to love again. The characters, Rachel, Matthew and Dillon. What can I say about Dillon? You've got to see the world through his eyes. Let me tell you. He was fun to write, I'm sure. The story stays with you. Marinates. There is a strong spiritual message embedded throughout this work. The ending... The ending... LOVED it.

If anyone is vaguely familiar with The Bible, then you know the story of The Prodigal Son. Here's a brief recap: there is a dysfunctional family, one son leaves the home out of anger, the dad prays that he comes back home, and eventually he does. So, here comes one of the most famous fictional Christian families aka The Black's and all of their drama.

Hence the title, the book focuses on Reverend Black's two sons: Dillon and Matthew. The Prodigal Son is one of the oldest stories known to man, but Kimberla Lawson Roby has told it in modern fashion which made the story fresh and relevant. If you are looking for a book that has the perfect combination of entertainment, drama, and overall life lessons then The Prodigal Son is the book for you!

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of The Prodigal Son in exchange for an honest review.

The saga of the Curtis Black family continues with Dillon, the eldest son of Pastor Curtis Black. Dillon has recently been united with his father and intends to insert himself into the Black family to be doted on. He wants to receive all of his father’s attention at any cost. Matthew Black hasn't spoken to his parents because of his mother's lies against his wife. Matthew being estranged from the family is just what Dillon wants as he plots to have their father all to himself. Matthew is grappling with some demons of his own once he realizes and accepts that his wife is no longer the woman he knew. Dillon has declared all-out war on anyone that he believes will stand between him and the relationship he wants with his father. Most of this energy is focused on his stepmother, Charlotte whom he sees as the main obstacle between him and his father. The saying be careful what you wish for comes to mind when one thinks of Dillon. Lies and secrets can only be held together for so long before they start to unravel. The reader’s attention will be held throughout the book. The story line was smooth and flowed nicely. I also believe that any reader will find this book just as the author intended which is attention grabbing without being overly dramatic. The characters deal with real life situations and touches on mental illness as well which seems a forbidden topic in communities of color.

The Prodigal Son, while an interesting read at times, was not one of my favorite books of the Black series. The utter gall and nerve of Dillion astounded me!His dear Aunt give him wise counsel that he chose to ignore! I m glad in the end he received his just reward!

the dysfunctional family is back at it again. MAtthew and Dillon take center stage with this entry. Though not as good as the previous book, it did have some decent storylines (though we've seen it before: crazy babymama, abusive spouse, angry man, etc).

The Prodigal Son is the 11th book in the Reverend Curtis Black series by Kimberla Lawson Roby. Fans of this series may have guessed that Matthew is the prodigal son. He gave up a full, four-year academic scholarship to Harvard University to marry his girlfriend Raquel and be a young father. Estranged from his own parents, Matthew is realizing that marriage and fatherhood is nothing like he expected. When an old friend expresses desire for Matthew, temptation and repeating his parents' mistakes are likely. Meanwhile in the other Black household, first-born long-lost son Dillon is doing the most trying to win his father's affection. You thought Charlotte was a jealous-hearted plotter? Ha! Meet this dude.

"...life is too short for all this drama." ~ pg. 82

Both sons are the center of this 11th installment of the series. It is always entertaining to read the shenanigans of the Black family, but it was especially nice that this book focused on Reverend Black's two sons and their relationships.

In the words of my bookheart Sidne, "Baby BYE." Do not question whether this is a worthy book to read. Just pick it up, turn the drama-filled pages and thank me later.

America's favorite fictional dysfunctional Christian family is back. The Prodigal Son finds us dealing with the good and unrighteous son of Reverend Curtis Black, Matthew. Granted this child has seen and been exposed to everything under the sun by his parents. We find him in a difficult marriage, struggling to keep his head above water seemingly due to the actions of his mother. We also get a look at a Cane and Abel situation with his newly found brother, Dillon. Dillon clearly is dealing with coping issues, feelings of abandonment, and outright jealousy. For all that this family has been through, I would like to see them just once band together to fight outside forces rather than the constant infighting amongst themselves. In this novel, Kimberla Lawson Roby gives us insight of the damage of generational curses and how deep the scars are. I enjoyed reading this novel and can't wait to see if Reverend Black is gonna call up Iyanla to fix this broken family!

Curtis Black's dysfunctional family is back at it again....This time we are looking at the lives of Matthew and his crooked newfound son, Dillion.
The book is not as good as some of the book's in the series but it displays morals and lessons that for those of us who have read or heard the biblical story of "The Prodigal Son".
It also shows the emotional and mental issues Dillion has taken on because of how Curtis rejected him and his mother from his birth and how he loved Curtis stich that he neglects the "mother" who loved him as her own. Dillion makes a number of mistakes, adultery, rape, and mental and emotional abuse. His jealousy of his siblings drives him to needing some much needed "chair time"
which he never gets. I don't believe this is the last that we will see or hear from Dillion, because he didn't leave Mitchell so he is still lurking in the shadows waiting for one of the Black's to mess up.

I love Kimberla Lawson Roby. All of her books are great rather it is the Reverend Curtis Black series or one of her stand alone novels.

In this book The Prodigal Son, Rev. Blacks sons are the main characters. Matthew is a young, married, father who hasn't spoke to his parents in over a year. He is dealing with his troubled marriage and fatherhood.

Dillon is the abandoned child that is trying to build a relationship with his father Curtis. He will stop at nothing to become a part of the Black family.

This book is filled with suspense, drama and jelousy. Mrs. Roby does a great job of developing her characters. I enjoy that she brings real life issues ( abandoment, depression, etc) into her books. A definite 5 star read.

The novels was one of the best in the series so far. I appreciated getting a different perspective. For once the focus was not on Curtis and Charlotte and honestly I am over them. I am excited to see how Matthew and Dylan develop as characters. The story line did end perfectly but I have a feeling that more drama will come especially since Dylan has a bee in his bonnet toward his fathers entire family, Racquel will probably come back in a negative way and I’m sure that there may be drama with Alicia and her ex husband/fiancé.

It is also funny to see that all of Curtis’ chick seen have turned out like him. They have all cheated on their spouses and the oldest two were sneaky and manipulative. I can not wait to see how their lives play out for the rest of the series.

At this point the author is getting desperate and reaching for a storyline! This series is truly the same thing over and over. The mvp character was Melissa!!! Huuunnnnay Melissa stole the show at the end as I knew she would!
Poor Rachel her little kind went bad after what Charlotte did to her. Charlotte needs to pay. You just don’t play with anyone’s kid like that. Maybe in the next 2 books it will come back to get her.
Dylan was just strange all the way around that’s it that’s all!
Now on to the next book to see who Curtis or Charlotte will cheat with or what scandal will came back to get them

This book was full of folks gone crazy which always makes for good drama, especially when you have a crazy male character involved. They seem to be rare in stories so it's always a treat to read a male character being a little touched. I liked that this story didn't put a whole lot of focus on Pastor Black and the First Lady and more on the sons' lives, it gave some freshness to the series because I feel like we need to put Pastor Black to rest soon, real soon.

Seems as though this book was written in a rush. There were many details left out and it seemed to move to resolution unnaturally fast. There were some ancillary characters that could have been fleshed out a bit. Not Roby's best in this series.

The usual dysfunctional Black family more people trying to get over or ruin them only this time neither Curtis or is wife Charlotte are responsible. Good from start to finish but I get tired of the same old drama and basic plot line reminiscent of a Tyler Perry movie.
