I was gifted an ecopy of Destry in exchange for an honest review.
For anyone who knows me knows that I love a good alpha male lead, rockstar, badass biker, billionaire - I love 'em all, but my weakness, is most definitely a cocky cowboy, stick a Stetson on him and I'm done! So Lola Stark already had my interest piqued with that fact alone. One of the things I love most about Lola's books are her kickass female leads, I find I read all too often about females who are plagued with self confidence issues, are naive and so unsure of themselves that it's almost crippling, and sometimes I just want to sink my teeth into a story that takes me away, a book about a woman, who is strong, who is sure of themself, who has made a decision that she is the hero in her life story, that she doesn't need saving. This character that I so desperately want to read about is Amelia, strong, feisty and sick of playing a role in a life that doesn't even feel like hers anymore.
Enter Destry, a sexy chiseled cowboy, a man who is proof that you don't know how strong you are until it's the only choice you've got. He's been burnt before and is unwilling to take another chance. His brothers Austin, all sweet talking southern charm and Braxton, gracious and courteous, the kind of guy who will stand by you when you're down for the count. Ellie-May, their younger sister, sassy, strong and desperately trying to prove she's no longer a child.
Destry for me, is a coming of age story of sorts, it's about finding yourself, knowing what you deserve, and demanding nothing less, it's about giving yourself over to someone else and taking a chance, but at it's very base level Destry is about acceptance, which I'm hoping in Braxton's story we will see the same themes continuing.
I know Lola Stark makes it known in her acknowledgements and dedication that Destry came about at a low point, in her disclaimer Stark mentioned that Destry is unlike her other books, to keep an open mind when reading it, but what I found was that Destry has the same heart that the Needles Kiss series has, the same straight talking strong willed characters that I have fallen in love with in the past. Destry for me 5 stars because from the first line to the last words I was hooked, I couldn't put it down even though my body was begging for sleep.
Congratulations Lola on taking a chance on something different, and for smashing it out the park, I'm waiting with baited breath for Braxton's story.
