A Wizard's Touch #1

Jaynell's Wolf

Rate this book
Book One in the A Wizard's Touch series.

Sometimes it takes a little magic to find true love…

Jaynell Marley’s father’s dying wish was to send his son to the Wizard Academy. It only took Jay a short time to realise he didn’t belong. His abilities, far more advanced than the other students, could only cause jealousy. Knowing how to speak gnome and summon a dragon put him beyond everyone’s skills but the teachers.

Enter Thomas Sparks—a member of the local wolf pack who isn’t impressed with Jay’s magic. He wants the man himself. One look into Jay’s eyes and Thomas knows he’s found his life mate. The only problem—convincing the powerful wizard that they were meant to be together.

When outside forces threaten to tear them apart, it will take their combined skills to defeat the evil wizard trying to steal their future.

Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

If you have read Amber Kell's stories before, you'll know that her stories are pretty much carbon copies of one another. Similar type of characters (one brat or loose-sweet and one grumpy possessive Alpha). There is nothing new in this as well. They met, the Alpha says, "You're my Mate, nothing you can do about it". They bond. They mate. End of story. That alone, for stories, I will only give it 2 stars

BUT, the difference with this one is the wizard characters. Hey, it's like reading gay Harry Potter (with wolf mate!). And the house-gnomes remind me of Harry's elves. The story at the school is the best. From showing off the talent with potion and calling avatars. Those contribute to the additional stars

Wizards and werewolves, oh yeah!

I really liked this. It was pretty short (71 pages), so it did have a feeling of being underdeveloped, but less than I expected for a story of this length.

Jay is a wizard attending wizarding college for the first time. Because he was home schooled his entire life he has no idea he is way more powerful than any other wizard. He tries not to show how much power he has, but he has a feeling he screws that up a lot, considering all the shocked looks he gets whenever he does magic.

description

When Jay is having dinner with his roommates he runs into a big hunk of a man. This man turns out to be a werewolf. This werewolf Thomas cannot believe his luck of running into his fated mate! He is never letting this cute wizard go.

The romance is a whirlwind one and there’s a lot of MINE and growling. All very much the way I like it.

I really liked this world. There is a 3 headed dragon, some cute wizard friends, gnomes and a very protective pack of werewolves.

This series definitely starts off with a bang in this first installment of 'A Wizard's Touch'. Just imagine Harry Potter going to college after years of home schooling, not knowing how powerful he is, and missing some of the basic "wizard etiquette" because he has spent his life at home. Jaynell is much like his famous namesake, only all grown up and even more powerful, but there are several intriguing differences as well, both in his character and in the world Amber Kell has created here. I always enjoy learning the "rules" of a new universe, and this one had me fascinated. Wizard / werewolf couples are just such tremendous fun!

Jaynell has a harrowing history that has made him not only an extremely powerful wizard, but also very lonely. He can do spells some of his professors are unable to comprehend, and the college quickly realizes there isn’t much they can teach him. I loved that he spoke the Gnome language and got them on his side just by being nice to them. Turns out, that was pretty useful, and not just because he has dozens of them applying to take care of his dorm room for him. What Jaynell finds really difficult to deal with is Thomas – the werewolf who claims to be his mate. All he wants is some no-strings sex, but Thomas has different ideas!

Thomas is a very strong werewolf who really should be the alpha of his pack, except he has no interest whatsoever to lead. He is also the younger brother, so luckily, that responsibility falls to James. They do quibble about who really is the alpha occasionally, but Thomas is so unassuming, there isn’t a real problem. The one area Thomas will not allow anyone to interfere in is where his mate is concerned. The magic leaves him more or less unimpressed, but he does like the occasional convenience such as instant magical clothes cleaning when needed.

With some serious insta-love, a villain from a somewhat unexpected corner, fast-paced action once the gloves come off, and wonderful "magical" details, this is a fun story that made me laugh. If you like stories about wizards who find themselves unexpectedly mated to possessive werewolves, if you enjoy reading about men who need to figure out who the alpha is in their relationship and find that surprisingly easy, and if you're looking for a light, entertaining read, then you will probably like this novella.

DNF @ 41% This MC is just way too much of a Gary Stu. He arrives at the mage school, impresses everyone with his language skills, is leagues better than everyone at magic, is instantly asked out by the hottest girl in school who he turns down while his new roommates watch in awe, gets a hot werewolf mate who immediately falls for him, is even better at potion making than the teachers, and so on, and so on. I think the MC is meant to be in his 20s but it mostly read like bad power-fantasy YA to me.

2.5 stars. Ok m/m paranormal romance about a wizard arriving at wizard college after the death of his father and meeting a very forceful werewolf... This definitely drew a lot of inspiration from Harry Potter.

The difference between this book and those I usually rate with 3 stars is the humor. It's pretty funny, something I love in Amber Kell's books. Now the rest of the book was kind of rushed, but what bothered me the most was the input of information. There was just so much going on without even a pause to take a breath. Another thing was the stiffness. Am I the only one who noticed? You have a bunch of these funny situations and comebacks but it's like robots are participating and saying them. The only one who looked somewhat alive was Thomas and then again, when the story was from his POV you couldn't really see it.
The story is filled with elements you've probably read in some other books, but here they are all jumbled together. Expect the classics -- love at first sight, smell and feel, 'you're mine', forever bond, blood exchange and all that usual stuff. If you don't mind it, which a lot of us don't considering how many similar books we actually read, you might like this one.

A very exciting beginning to a new series by the talented, Amber Kell. I will be very interested to see where this goes, although I'd love to see more of Jay and Thomas.

Jay is a wicked powerful wizard and he's lucky to have Thomas as his werewolf mate. The drama and the "bad guy" were kind of predictable, but I still enjoyed the story. Oh, and these two were pretty hot together!

My first foray back into original fiction after gorging on fanfic and what a big frigging disappointment. Deleting the rest of the series from my Kindle and rethinking my reading choices since almost 100% of the fanfic I've recently read was far more professionally written than this clunky mess.

The story is to bland to simple set. The bonding is to fast and the plot is just boring. I definitely wont read that book again.

Not recommended in my point of view !!

Good start

3.75 ⭐️

I enjoyed this one. I’ve had a difficult week and needed to unwind with a book that wasn’t going to be too in-depth but more entertaining and letting me just be and enjoy. This one filled the mark
I liked Jay and enjoyed how he was unassuming. He knew he was powerful but at the same time never rubbed peoples faces in it. I enjoyed Thomas too. I liked that he was powerful but also had no desire to lead.
The ending felt a bit rushed and abrupt. What happened to the gnomes?
I’ll continue on and hope it comes out in the next few books

This book is a re-release that I got from Amazon for free. I really enjoyed it. I liked both MCs. Thought they had great chemistry together. Liked the side characters, especially the gnomes. I just forgot that the author has a bad habit of ending her stories too abruptly. I was left wanting more. In addition, it ended at 85% and the rest was excerpts. So overall, I liked the story. Just wish the author hadn’t ended it where she did.

This was a short quick read that I enjoyed reading. This was book one in the A Wizard's Touch series by one of my go to authors for a paranormal read Amber Kell. Jaynell Marley's father's dying wish was to send his son to the Wizard Academy which he didn't belong at because his skills where far more advanced. Thomas Sparks is a member of the local wolf pack who isn't impressed with Jay's magic. He wants the man himself. One look into Jay's eyes and Thomas knows he's found his life mate. The only problem convincing the powerful wizard that they were meant to be together. The problem for me was that this book moved really fast and although I am use to reading Amber's style of writing I think this one moved too fast. The sex scenes in this were just ok and I really wanted more. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Second time reading this book still 3 stars for me

**Grammar**

I must say that I was surprised by this book. I loved both the MCs and also the secondary ones were really nice. The story was interesting with a bit of mystery and also if many questions still don't find their answers, they sure will in the next books of the series.
Jay, our 25 years old virgin and powerfull wizard, was sweet, cute and smart and also(let's be sincere) a pushy bottom XD
Thomas our big, "bad" wolf, was damn sexy and I loved his jealousy and possessiveness, that, made him even hotter. When they were together in bed, let's say that summer heat was nothing compared to them. The fact that Jay was a virgin and Thomas had never been a bottom and they weren't scared of trying any position, did make it worth reading :p

The plot was well written, and there was some angst, but also if the story was a bit short and maybe it went too fast, still the author was able to keep my interest and not only with the sex scenes, but with the chemistry btw our chars.

At his dead father’s bequest, Jaynell Marley attends an esteemed wizard school hoping to finish up his education. What he finds it that the real education he’s lacking is about life. When shape shifter Thomas Sparks claims Jaynell as his mate the pair start a whole new understanding between werekin and wizards...
************

Jay went to that esteemed wizard school because he promised his dad and although he had almost nothing to learn from his teachers, he´s humble and never tried to show off and tried to help others.
And found his soul mate Thomas. They're so cute together.
I just loved that Jay was so sweet and fearless, at the same time.
I think that everything happened so fast that I'm still waiting to read a litle bit more... about Jay and Thomas, werekin and wizards...
I'm looking foward to read the sequel: Kevin's alpha.

I really enjoyed this. Wizards, wolves, gnomes, avatars, potions, and more :) How can you NOT like that. I really liked Jay . Thomas didn't really do much for me though for some reason.

My only complaints are that it ended too soon (87%). I wanted more about what happened AFTER. And, the POV changes mid scene. Talk about annoying.

Loved it. Wished it was longer. Completely fell for both men. As for the being rushed...I didn't think so. It was fast, but if you were Thomas, and realized your one and only mate was standing right in front of you...You'd go full steam ahead to secure him by your side. To make sure you didn't miss your only chance at happiness. And really...how much more build up can you get in a short story. I thought it was sweet that Thomas didn't immediately want to make the bond permanent, and gave Jay a way out.

I'm giving this a 3.5 more for the original concept - werewolves and wizards - than the actual plot. I liked the characters but thought the whole thing just moved too fast and had no emotional hooks whatsoever.

The plot was pretty childish. It's as if Amber wrote this when she was in eighth grade and tweaked it a bit and had it published.

Jaynell's Wolf
By Amber Kell

Jaynell is a wizard alone in the world. Both his parents gave their lives to save his. He's off to wizard college to complete his father's dying wish. Given he's had tutors his whole life instead of formal or public schooling he's skilled far beyond all of his peers which causes awe and some jealousy amongst classmates. Though his everyday knowledge of how some things work in the real world can be a bit lapsed. He is also discovered by his fated mate, a werewolf named Thomas. When a deranged wizard challenges him he'll have to protect himself and his mate.

I really enjoyed this book. It was funny and sweet and filled with about 15 gnomes, wizard friends, trolls, 3 headed dragons, griffins, and more. It was a great lighthearted story. If you're not looking for anything high on angst and want a couple laughs this would be a great book.

The story is in mostly Jaynell's POV, but occasionally in Thomas' as well.

The storyline moves quite quickly, with some intuitive and some sudden movements. There are a few moments which feel contrived to provide the correct answer, and the final resolution is fast and quick. I liked the world building and the characters, but do wish there was more prose to the story. Too much was glossed over and the story would have been better with more depth into the characters and storyline. Ends on a positive note, and promises a possible HEA though mostly we are left assuming what the future will be.

Lost potential

This book was a really good story. But it could have been so much more. If the author slowed it down. Didn't rush the story. Jaynell's story could have been a multiple book series. The magic he has is fascinating. I would have loved more detail into his past. Flash backs to scenes with his father and all his training. Waited a bit longer to when he meets thomas. I'm alittle sad over the lost potential of an amazing series .

Enjoyable characters and really nice story, I liked this book and have downloaded the rest of the series to read it.
The plot was well written and characterisation fine, I do find a lot of these books short reads but still they are good to have in your library when you want something that won't take too long to read and is still fun to read.
Recommend readers of shifter-magic books read, others who want something different and not too taxing.

“Wow” is the first word that comes to mind after reading Jaynell’s Wolf by Amber Kell. I was thoroughly entranced. I have always enjoyed Amber Kell’s stories and Jaynell’s Wolf was no different. Amber Kell has a talented imagination and she knows how use it!

I enjoyed the instant attraction between Jay and Thomas. Jay’s slight fear of being bonded again to someone was evident but the love he feels for Thomas outweighs that fear. I liked that Thomas was willing to let Jay work though those fears without being demanding. Thomas easily won me over when he freely admitted that his mate was just as much Alpha as any wolf. Jay has an infectious personality that wins over not only Thomas’ Alpha and brother, but everyone around him. Except one. And that is a battle Jaynell has to fight with the help of his pack and new friends.

Jaynell’s Wolf is a fast-paced enjoyable read, a delightful mix of romance, humor and magic, with enough reality to make it all believable. I love the magic in Amber’s books. I am very much looking forward to reading more of A Wizard’s Touch series. If Jaynell’s Wolf is anything to go by, the whole series promises to be extremely entertaining. And if the next one is about the two I hope it is, then it should prove to be just as good or even better than Jaynell’s Wolf. This is definitely one of those series where you can be sucked into the lives and loves of all the characters easily.

Amber Kell has republished Jaynell’s Wolf and my curiosity got the better of me and yes, I still have my original e-book version that I purchased from All Romance, but haven’t read it in some time, I may have to, just to see if and/or how different the 2 versions are.

Jaynell’s father’s last request is for him to attend a magical university, where he meets his 4 room mates and his werekin mate Thomas. As Jaynell meets in his new potential friends he worries about chasing them off as they discover how powerful he is. His mate, Thomas, a powerful wolf in his own right lacks the ambition to be Alpha and is very happy to have found his mate and be his brothers second.

When I first read this story, I honestly did not think it would one I would read again so guess I surprised myself. There wasn’t much about Jaynell’s Wolf that I didn’t like. It was well written with practically no editing issues, maybe one or two but nothing that truly interrupted the overall flow of the story. I am unsure of the title Jaynell’s Wolf, because, even though Thomas is in nearly every chapter in the story, the focus is on Jaynell more then his wolf or them as a couple.
