McQuade: The Lone Wolf Takes A Mate

Rate this book
McQuade Jenner was a lone wolf.

He didn't need some antiquated idea of one mate for life messing up his perfect bachelor lifestyle. On any given night he could find a biker groupie–human or shifter–reckless enough for a one-time fling with a wolf. He could bed a woman when he felt the need and go home to the solitude he enjoyed. And that's exactly what he'd intended to do the night Rose Spencer walked into his life–alone, wet, and trouble just waiting to happen. He’d never intended to get involved with the innocent Rose–she was a life-time commitment and McQuade didn't do commitment. But what was a wolf protector supposed to do when the woman his wolf wanted was threatened by a low-life lion shifter?

Rose Spencer wasn't the bar-scene type. She'd never have stepped foot inside the shifter bar unless she’d been trying to protect her sister–again. When would she learn that Alice was quite capable of taking care of herself–and that she was the one suddenly in need of protection?

My Rating: ★★★½
GOOD: The characteristics of a 3 star book include: interesting characters, a decent storyline, and unique story elements; there was something about the story that I didn’t completely connect with; the book is a solid read. I would recommend it to a friend.

My Thoughts:
McQuade: The Lone Wolf Takes A Mate was a quick and enjoyable read. Based on the description I thought this would just be a meet-and-mate shifter story. True, it was that, but the story contained a depth that I wasn't expecting. It was a pleasant surprise. Rose and McQuade were well suited for one another even though they were seemingly worlds apart. The secondary story about the lion shifters and Rose's sister Alice--hated her--provided some grit to the story and kept it from being syrupy sweet. I love how big, strong, gorgeous McQuade was felled by little, sweet Rose. There were two tiny elements that kept this story from being a solid four stars. The first was Rose's constant belittlement of herself. It was bad enough when Alice did it. The second element is that the character development was minimal. I would have enjoyed knowing more about the situation with his parents and former pack and how he arrived where he was. BUT, these were small things and definitely did not fracture my enjoyment of this steamy tale.

Ratings Detail:

Rating for secondary characters: 4★

A perfectly enjoyable quotidian erotic shifter romance featuring a lone wolf resisting his mate and a lovely BBW learning to get a back bone.

The romance was sweet and hot. The evil sister part wasn't so good nor was the lion threat but overall fun stuff.

I look forward to passing a lovely afternoon with more of Richards Paranormals.

The couple: McQuade and Rose

Romance genre: shifter; fated mates
Part of a series: no
Length: 168 pages

Plot: One night, McQuade, a wolf shifter, is out at a local bar, and in walks Rose. She's the complete opposite of the kind of woman he normally goes for, but he's drawn to her nonetheless - in all her wet, bedraggled, plain glory. What he sees clearly, though, is that she's in danger. She's a human in a bar full of shifter, and the lions in particular are eyeing her like a meal. So he catches her in the hallway and marks her (with her permission, and not permanently). He takes her home (she was in the bar because her car broke down), and then leaves. But he can't stop thinking of her. So what will it take to convince him to give a relationship with Rose a shot?

Character development: I loved these two characters. McQuade could clearly see that Rose was nothing like his normal conquest, and even though he kept telling himself that, he couldn't stay away from her. His wolf knew. Rose couldn't imagine how someone like McQuade could want someone like her, but she could tell that he wasn't faking the desire he felt for her. It took a few near catastrophes to bring them together permanently, but I think it was okay that they took things slow(ish). The one thing I wished for that I didn't get was comeuppance for Alice - she was horrible and deserved...something. And I'd love to read a book about Briggs!

Would I read more from this author/in this series: Yes

McQuade liked his life just the way it was then Rose walked into the bar and his word changed forever. When Rose got a call from her sister needing a ride Rose came to the shifter/human bar even though she knew it would be dangerous on the way there her tire blew now soaking wet with a broken car and no sister to be scene Rose has to try to dry off and walk home. On the way to the bathroom a group of lion shifter try to stop her to take her but McQuade stops them. Rose is not McQuade's type but he can't deny that he wants her, he also knows she isn't a one night girl but when the lion shifters threaten her he steps in and gives her a ride home.

McQuade and Rose both feel the chemistry but they both hold back. Rose knows his type and she also knows she will never be it. McQuade doesn't want commitment but his inner wolf has woken and won't stop till he has Rose. For so long his wolf has been quiet but now that he has scene Rose he wants her. As McQuade and Rose try to keep their distance they both find it harder and hard the more time they spend together. When the lion shifter from the bar finds Rose McQuade knows that he will never be able to leave her again but someone wants something from Rose and they are willing to do anything for it, now McQuade and his pack will have to keep her safe so that McQuade and Rose can find a happiness they both though wasn't possible.

I liked this book, I'm always on the look out for a shifter/werewolf book and this was a really good one. I wished it was longer but only because I was enjoying it so much. I do wish that Rose had more self confidence through the book buy I'm glad she finds it. McQuade was a great hero he was possessive and commanding and I really loved his inner wolf he knew what he wanted and he was going to make sure McQuade knew it too. This was a really good short shifter book, I hope Lynn Richards continues with this series I would really like to read a book about McQuade's best friend and I would like to see how this story progresses. Overall this was a great short paranormal romance that I recommend for anyone who likes their heroes crazy in love, strong, and an all around possessive hero.

McQuade and Rose. Well Rose has a sister from hell whom she is always having to bail out. Her sister is 'the beautiful one' and Rose sees herself as the chubby, passably pretty one. She ends up at a shifter bar where her sister is supposedly waiting for a ride home. Only her sister isn't there and the car she was going to pick her up with is by the side of the road a ways back with a flat tire. Then to top it all off, the bar is full of shifty shifters looking for a woman and not about to take 'no' for an answer. Lucky for Rose, McQuade becomes her reluctant rescuer. McQuade is a determined bachelor, and doesn't improve til the last bit of the story when he finally finds his balls. I did like his best friend though and all the teasing he did to McQuade. Through his friend's interference, McQuade gets to know Rose better. Rose is a strong character and I liked her until her TSTL moment at the end of the book. The world building is pretty much non-existent and the bad guys are cartoonish. So overall it wasn't particularly memorable. I think I would have given the story 3 stars if it had been more romantic.

McQuade Jenner had no plans to take a mate, he was a rolling stone and never wanted the responsibilities of having to care for a woman more than satisfying their primal needs in bed. That all changed when a drenched Rose Spencer walked into a shifter bar. The innocent beauty doesn't realize she has drawn the attention of several shifters who would love to take her, whether she would want it or not.

Stepping in and temporarily marking her as his, should have been simple. McQuade though is finding he can't stay away, his wolf wants his mate but the man is not ready to take that step. When he finds Rose has been attacked though, everything changes and McQuade changes his tactics to show his mate how much she has come to mean to him..

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. McQuade is stubborn when it comes to following his feelings, but even though he is kind of a jerk in the beginning, there is a tenderness that he has when it comes to Rose. Excellent shifter story, going to check out more from this author.

3 1/2-4 stars. I wasn't sure how to rate this one. I really did enjoy it. I thought the writing style was good, and the H was very alpha. The h seemed a little annoying at times, especially at the suspense climax. It was a quick read, and because of its potential with the plot, I thought it would have benefited from being longer. The ending was just too abrupt. I realize this is probably considered an erotic romance, and I don't usually have an issue with it. The intimate scenes were very spicy, but it seemed the H and h were thinking about it ALL the time. I think I was a little disappointed because It was a pretty short story, and I enjoyed the premise of the plot so much, along with the characters, I wished it had more substance. Over all it was a good read, and I would recommend.

Rose goes to pick up her sister from a bar when she gets a flat tire. She ends up walking the rest of the way to the bar in the rain. When Rose gets there some lion shifters start bothering her. A wolf shifter, McQuade, ends up saving her. How you might ask? By biting her.

I hate that Rose thinks she's so undesirable because she's a little bigger. I do love all the different names McQuade calls Rose. Their first meeting was intense. The fact that McQuade stood up for Rose is definitely something. I didn't expect that Rose didn't know how to text! How cute is it that McQuade ordered food for her. I love McQuade's reaction to meeting Alice. I did appreciate that random guy that helped Rose get on McQuade's bike. I feel awful that Rose has had to put up with Alice her whole life. That twist at the end was quite unexpected.

This is both the strangest and coolest writing style. So it's dual pov but not in a normal way. Took a couple chapters to get used to but I ended up really liking it.

Plot is good. I was really excited reading first six chapters . But after that , (the feminist in me ) didn't like how the female protagonist Rose was portrayed.... Mostly naive and horny.
As for McQuade, he's as good as any lone wolf can be.
A rescuer, with an intent like ""One night to burn this fire out of his veins."" Some readers might like how it started, but I could not.
Certainly would not like Rose's unsure sense of self;

Rose’s breath froze in her lungs. “You want…to mate with me?”
His hand, which had been resting on her hip, moved up her side, caressing her shoulder, before cupping her face. “I want you as my mate.”
Rose shook her head at his words. “I don’t know what that means.”
“Yes, you do,” he smiled. “But if you need to hear the words, I’m more than willing to say them. It means I love you, Rose. I want to be with you for the rest of my life. However long that may be.”

It is
All's well that ends well.

I am horrible at reviewing books as I finish them :/ This one has been done for awhile so it's not quite fresh in my mind. With that being said...I did enjoy this book but I didn't love it. I think what annoyed me so much was too of McQuade's push and pull. I fully think he would've moved on from Rose if she hadn't been attacked that final time by the lion shifter so I wasn't sure if I fully believed his turn around feeling for his mate. I kept hoping that Rose would make him work harder for it. Will have to reread at a later date to see if I still feel this way!

An awesome read!

Who doesn't love a dominant male with a sweet side? Rose is way naive and needs a protector. McQuade just might be wolf enough for the job. A super exciting read!

With so many books written in the paranormal genre it's hard to set yourself apart from the rest. In this work by Lynn Richards the storyline is nothing new, but it's definitely entertaining and HOT and had me breezing through it to reach its satisfying HEA. This story is basically boy meets girl, boy tries to fight his attraction to girl, and ultimately boy stakes his claim of girl. The boy this time around is a super sexy wolf shifter who's experienced heartbreaking loss in his past which has him leery of putting his heart on the line again. From the moment McQuade rescues the sweet Rose from a dangerous group of shifters in a bar he knows his life will never be the same. He's attracted to her but knows she's not a woman to bed and forget. It's a constant fight against his wolf side who knows Rose is their mate, but it will be the threat from a lion shifter and an unexpected enemy putting her in danger, that finally forces McQuade to put the past behind him. McQuade is the strong but silent type. He's domineering but in a sexy and caring way that's common for shifters. He oozes sex appeal and his scenes with Rose are full of sexual tension from page one. He's an immensely appealing hero who finally found joy and happiness when around Rose.

Rose is the younger sister to the wild and manipulative Alice. Rose is always having to take care of her and her messes which leads to the dangerous situation she's in when McQuade first rescues her. Rose is a very caring individual which leads to her being used repeatedly for financial help. Rose has sacrificed everything for Alice which has left her with very little to her name with work her only outlet for interacting with others. Her sister's beauty and confidence has also left Rose with low self-esteem and little self-worth. McQuade is the first man to make her feel alive and inspires all sorts of naughty thoughts in the sexually naive Rose's head. She's always trying to handle everything on her own which is admirable but has her butting heads with McQuade repeatedly and puts her in constant danger. Rose is likable but left me frustrated at times by her gullibility in regards to Alice. She stood up for herself in many other situations but was blind when it came to Alice's verbal and emotional manipulations.

Much of the story revolved around Rose and McQuade's burgeoning sexual relationship, which was steamy and entertaining when witnessing the internal battle between man and wolf. The sexual interludes were intense with graphic talk from McQuade. The scenes were nicely spaced throughout the story and moved at an unhurried pace to amp up the sexual intensity. A small part revolved around a threat to Rose which put her and McQuade in close contact but was wrapped up too quickly and halfheartedly very late in the story. The story's focus was mainly on them but glimpses of the manipulative and petty Alice were depicted sparingly throughout the story though her ending was left hanging. A definite bright spot was McQuade's best friend Briggs who was charming, funny, and outgoing. He's the exact opposite of the serious and stoic McQuade and I adored him. He's charming and playful and admittedly good with women and I would love for his story to be told as he's an unforgettably sexy beast! From beginning to end this was a well-written and super steamy story that's not groundbreaking but definitely enjoyable. This was my first book by Lynn Richards and won't be my last.

Reviewed for: Where the Night Kind Roam

So here we go again an insecure BBW female that doesn’t think she deserves a good looking man just because she has some curves. Why can we not have a curvy girl that rocks her curves and loves it? Seriously?! Why not why does almost every bigger female we read about have to be so down on themselves? So basically we have Rose our innocent virgin who has never had a relationship because shes on the bigger side because of course there could never be a guy that likes a girl that rocks her curves.. that just doesn’t exist until she walks into a shifter bar. Then she is the most popular girl in the bar. McQuade is a bad ass shifter, an enforcer for his pack. He’s not that comfortable with the idea of belonging to something, he’s more of the lone wolf time but he felt it was time to rejoin a pack and the pack he joined is pretty laid back and lets him do himself. He’s out at a bar looking for a “good time” when the innocent Rose walks into the bar and suddenly the tension in the shifter bar is off the chain. Normally that would been fine with McQuade but this time he wants the fair Rose for himself and he’s even willing to battle a bar for her. The sexual tension between Rose and McQuade is hot hot hot! These two have a blazing chemistry but McQuade is determined to avoid Rose and deny that he may be feeling a mating bond with Rose. But when Roses life is in danger he can no longer deny his instinct to protect his mate. Once they stopped fighting the attraction things moved along at a rapid pace. They were in sync with each other and truly seemed compatible. McQuade was sexy and sweet once he got past his growly avoidance phase. I wouldn’t have thrown him out of bed. Rose when she started to not be so hung up on her weight was actually likable. I ended up for the most part enjoying the book. The story itself wasn’t very flushed out but in all fairness it was pretty short. The whole plot line with her sister and the lion shifter was just kind of cut short with no real explanation. I guess it just gave a reason for Rose and McQuade to really get together and then stopped being useful so it came to an abrupt end. I did really enjoy McQuade’s best friend, his name is alluding me right now; but he was funny and kind hearted. If he ever gets a book, I’ll probably read it since I liked him so much.

Well, this is the 2nd book by Lynn Richards I have read now and I'm LOVING them.. I'm in a BBW & Shifter frame of mind lately and I'm so glad I found this author!!

I love McQuade and he fought so hard but Rose was just too much woman for him (oh you will get what I'm talking about when you read this story)!! ;-) I just know that they are going to write a story about his friend Briggs!! hint, hint

Here is the write-up from Amazon:
McQuade Jenner was a lone wolf.

I received this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
4.5 stars
McQuade is your typical werewolf. possessive, hot, and oh so irresistible. Rose is the complete opposite. She let's her older sister walk all over her. Works herself to the bone, doesn't feel that she is in the least bit attractive and was not prepared for the onslaught of lust when she walked into a shifter bar after her car gave out on her.

I loved the tension between the two mc's. McQaude is not in the least bit ready to settle down but he has to fight his wolf all the way when it comes to Rose. Rose is absolutely crazy about this man but keeps on thinking that she isn't good enough for him thanks to his ever so thoughtless rebuffs. It is a story that has been done before. We all know the about the girl with image issues and the sexy man that brings her inner beauty out. But this one was written so artfully that I forgave the cliché.

Both characters were really well rounded and very much immersed in each other. The supporting cast added a colourful feel to the book that would have otherwise left it lacklustre and unimpressive. The possessive wolf taking claim to his mate made it the ultimate Christmas read.

All in all a great read that I would recommend to all shifter lovers, romance lovers and erotic lovers.

Ok, so this is probably one of many books where theres a "lone wolf" - you you just KNOW hes not gonna stay LONE by the end of the book!

Thing is, although i knew how it would turn out, i really enjoyed reading this!

We start the book with McQuade sitting alone in a bar in a Shifter Bar looking for a girl to hook up with for one night - thats all he ever wants - an itch that needs to be scratched, an that one night and no commitments is perfect for him.

In walks human Lisa. Drenched from the rain, with hair looking like rats tails and make up streaming across her face.
McQuade is suddenly mesmerized. Like alot of the shifters in the bar - the lions in particular.

He watches her movements and sees when she goes to the ladies that the lions are there to try to intimidate her. He pulls her away saying "MINE" but as she has no scent of him on her, the lions taunt him...leaving him with little choice but to mark her...for her own safety of course.

He fights the pull of Lisa....and oh does he fight it!

He decides that one night with her will satisfy his cravings for her.......

but you know it wouldnt.......

good, sexy read, really enjoyable!

Need a good shifter book that seems to have it all? Look no farther, this is the book for you. McQuade is a lone wolf, not ever thinking of taking a mate. Rose is a reserved loner who thinks no one would want her. I loved reading her bloom a little. Not every curvy woman is strong and confident about their looks, so to say Rose has low self-esteem is a stretch. With the support system that was portrayed in the book being only her sister, it’s a wonder she was not severely depressed. With a sister like Alice, who needs enemies. Be prepared to read this book in one sitting, as I did. You will not be able to put it down. It was a good length at about 169 pages. The story has an awesome HEA. The characters were so well developed you either swooned with them, or you wanted to throw things and yell at them.

This book is incredibly hot and it is a hit for this author. I am already a fan of this author so when I saw the new book I had to get it. Let me tell you it did not disappoint. My only problem was trying to stay away from it while trying to get other things done. The relationship between McQuade and Rose is not an easy one. McQuade is use to being his own man and is not and does not want a mate. Rose on the other hand has been put down for so long she doesn't know what to do when something or someone good is staring her in the face. This book is a great give and take, push and pull between two stubborn characters that you will be rooting for till the very last word. I would highly recommend this book

This book had me glued to my kindle. Hot shifters, fun lore, a plus sized heroine, friendship, hot bikers, heat, a bit of humor, and even some suspense. Seriously, what is not to love? This fast paced read had me immediately checking their backlist to see if they had any more shifter reads I had some how missed, so that I could read more from them. I loved how the characters were all flawed, yet real and likable. I hope to read more about them in the future. If you are a BBW fan, a shifter fan, or a fan of hot bikers, this book has something for you. If you are like me and are all three, this is a must read.

He may think is a loner, but his Wolf...

This story was hot, sweet and I loved it. While they are new to me authors, I will be reading more of their work.
McQuade had no interest in females except for a one nighter. Well, until Rose stepped literally into the lion's den. Yeah, he wondered why the curvy little woman who made his usually quiet wolf howl, was coming into this danger den of low life shifters. Compelled to step in when she is threatened, he now has to talk his wolf out of his compulsion to keep watching over her.
As for Rose, no man had ever shown real interest in her. Is she in for an awakening.

Standard 3 stars, maybe 3.35

This was essentially exactly what it says on the tin - lone wolf takes a mate. Curvy, inexperienced, dowdy but secretly attractive downtrodden sister accidentally walks into a shifter bar. Lone wolf likes, takes, mean sister causes hassle, other shifters cause hassle, downtrodden insecurity issues cause hassle, all's well that ends well. The end.

McQuade; The lone Wolf Takes A Mate

When I read this the first time I loved the way the characters interacted with each other, the story of sister betraying sister is not one I know personally, but I have believe it can happen, though hopefully not too often I would like to see McQuades friend find his mate and the troubles that he has ?

Exactly what I expected

Even though this book is a little predictable, that was exactly what I was looking for. I needed a strong Alpha, a h who gets what she wants, a little bit of a storyline and some sexy bits. All boxes ticked.

This was a lot better than expected. McQuade "the lone wolf", a distant alpha type, who doesn't do relationships falls slowly pretty hard for Rose. It did take him a bit to realize that she was his mate but he's still a overprotective, growly, sexy alpha male.
