Covert Assignment

Rate this book
Covert Assignment is a New Adult, Coming of Age Novel with a strong romantic element. Elle is ready for graduation and full-fledged adulthood: no more living like the leftover of her parent’s divorce. She’s about to graduate with her degree in Information Science (the 21st century term for Library Science) and has a ten-year plan as well-designed as any model for analyzing metadata: earn her JD/MBA, enjoy a couple of years as a single professional, then marry her college sweetheart, Adam, and start her own family.

Yet Elle feels like she returned to an alternate universe her final semester. There are pictures of Adam with a classmate who must be surgically enhanced, but he insists he wants Elle. CIA recruiters show up on campus, and they aren’t just interested in recruiting Elle for future employment: turns out she’s already working for them since they’re funding her thesis. Hot operative Preston Raddick is tasked to work with her. Preston isn’t just hot: he’s hot for Elle, but is he offering happy ever after or happy for right now? A fling with Preston could be the beginning of a new life plan, which is exciting and scary, especially with espionage thrown in. Elle needs a predictive model to tell her which decisions have the greater likelihood for happiness…

Covert Assignment is about the unexpected turns life can take when making “adult” decisions.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in return for an honest review.

I'm always shocked when I start looking for a book's publisher, only to find that it's a self-published title. Well, not always.
But in this case, I had no idea. Seriously, keep an eye out for this author in the future.

Covert Assignment was an easy breezy read for me. Elle was adorable, her friends were awesome, her ex was deliciously icky, and Preston was a hottie. The CIA vs. terrorist stuff wasn't really nail-biting, but it added a bit of fun to an otherwise normal story about the decisions that leave their mark on our journey to become an adult.

Elle's got a Plan. Finish grad school, go to her father's alma mater for her JD/MBA, marry her college sweetheart, and live happily ever after.
Her parents split when she was very young, then both remarried and started families over again. Elle was a reminder of their failure, and was treated accordingly. Her lifeline to acceptance and a family that loves her is her boyfriend, Adam. Even though there's not much chemistry between them, he's her best friend and she loves him.
Besides, sex is overrated. Right?
Evidently not, because when she comes home from a particularity awkward Christmas with her mother, she finds out that he's been screwing a bimbo from one of his classes. And the skank posted pictures on the internet.
Visual imagery is always a nice addition to betrayal...
Adam swears he was seduced by her evil charms because he was drunk, and it will never happen again. All he wants is a chance to prove himself!
Blah, blah, blah...
Fortunately for Elle she has two awesome girlfriends to help her navigate this rather massive speed bump in her life.
'Cause if there's ever an appropriate time to get shit-faced with your girls, it's after you see the guy you thought would be the father of your children humping a troll with ginormous titties.

Meanwhile, an opportunity to work with the CIA on a short-term basis comes along. Turns out, the information data she's been collecting on a bunch of gamers for her thesis, is somehow related to a group of terrorists. And they could use her expertise to help them continue gathering data on a sub group within the chat rooms.
Again, the spy stuff was ok, but don't go into the book expecting a hard-core thriller.
Of course, they're not just going to give a grad student a CIA laptop, and turn her loose to ferret out the bad guys. And it wouldn't be a romance novel if she got partnered up with a paunchy old fart, right? No. No, it would not.
So say hello to our young hot spy dude, Preston, aka the operative who will be dealing with all of the classified stuff.
Growr!
Once Preston makes it known that he's interested in more than just Elle's computer skills, she's got to decide whether to give Adam a second chance, or to totally deviate from the Plan.
Deviate! Deviate, you idiot!

Anyway. This book is a good choice for someone looking for a light romance to break up the monotony of a Sunday afternoon.
Apparently Elle's story is also going to continue in Marciassa's next book, Covert Interview. Good news for me, because the ending (while complete) left me wanting to find out more about these characters.

Initial reaction: This is the kind of novel that I expected to enjoy, but the execution of the novel did it no favors. Between the haphazard tech jargon, the slut shaming and Elle giving a guy who was terrible for her one too many chances, and just something about this narrative that felt like it was trying too hard - I couldn't get into it. I'm still going to try the sequel to see if that's an improvement, but I have a feeling this could've been a lot better than what it presented itself as.

Full review:

*sighs* Okay, I'm going to level with you guys a bit - I wanted to like this book and it seemed like it was right up my alley with an intelligent heroine who's a graduate student and has the possibility of being drafted into the CIA, but this book really disappointed me on several levels. I expected it to be far different than the formulaic and awkward presentation it had.

I guess the first thing I'll say is that the slut-shaming was one element of this story that completely ruined it. Elle starts off as a student who thinks she has her life all figured out - where she wants to go to school, the possibility of who she wants to marry (long time relationship), and she's doing well for herself. She's intelligent, she has a solid group of friends - you know, what could go wrong?

Apparently when your long-time boyfriend is caught red-handed with another woman in a series of graphic sexual pictures - that's the first step. Understandably, Elle's upset and her relationship with Adam is on the rocks. Adam tries to apologize, comes off as an ultra misogynistic douche ("I'm just a guy! She was just someone I could blow off steam with! She didn't mean anything, not like you!") and Elle was having none of it. I actually admired her shutting him down, even if it took her a while to see the relationship would never work again. But Elle has a heavy tendency for slut shaming other women, even women who engage in casual flirting with any guy she may be potentially interested in (She even slut shames/bitch slams the secretary who flirts with Preston, her coworker and potential love interest aside from Adam.)

But that's not the only problem with this novel. I felt like a lot of the jargon and dialogue shaping Elle's thesis and college environment was...fake. Psuedo-intellectual. It was trying too hard and extremely vague. I kept reading about Elle working with data numbers and trends and figures, but none of it was ever really described to any kind of detail or genuine interest. And it felt weird to read, as well as convoluted - I couldn't really immerse myself in the narrative on that note. I could also say that I had a hard time following the characters because while they were presented with stakes in the story, they just weren't all that developed, really.

I understood that with respect to Elle's work, she had the potential to be drafted to the CIA, and there was some kind of terrorist plot that was involved at the university she was at, but in the end, the narrative didn't make me care enough.

I did get Elle's interest in her relationship with Preston though. I understood also that she ended up wanting to change the course of her her life because the path she thought she wanted to go wasn't the one she wanted to take at all (between her father pulling favors for her to attend school in Virginia versus going into the CIA, and of course Elle realizing that despite her relationship with Adam, he wasn't ever going to change his betraying ways.) I could see those issues, but the problem was that I only felt a loose connection to them because the presentation didn't feel all that intimate. There was something about this narrative that held it back from being a more resonant read. I wish I could say otherwise, but it just didn't provide for a pleasant reading experience.

I'll read the sequel to see if it improves, but overall, this narrative left me wanting more from it than it provided, even with some of the action scenes and CIA portrayals. It just didn't feel genuine enough for me to follow.

Overall score: 1.5/5 stars

The complete life goal implosion…is rarely a given in a romance novel so this is refreshing the complete shock that is associated with realizing the 10 yr plan no longer exists…
Typical boy gets drunk cheats and begs forgiveness…due to it happening on page 16 in in a 239 page (chapter 1 ) novel excites me… whats going to happen eeepp
I realize that our main charcter Elle (Eleanor) is in schooling but reading about it is quite dry and boring I am hoping I don’t have to hear about a semester of her courseload.

CIA wants ELLE before she even finishes her Master’s Degree ( I wish I was in your shoes Elle)
But why is Elle afraid to break up with cheater cheater Adam –is cheating really no black and white?
“It would be melodramatic to
dump the plate of nachos on his head, not to mention
childish. And why waste the nachos?”
….this line right here >>> “Alcohol loosens inhibitions. When your inhibition was
loosened, you slept with her.” She looked him right in the
eye. “Because you wanted to.”

Yes! She has said exactly what scorned women everyone believe
ELLE!! I wanna shake you… you are sooo smart but you are so afraid to walk away arrggghhhh be strong!!! You should never stay somewhere miserable to avoid being alone…but then again plenty of women out there are real life Elle’s in this moment
Elle you charmed my pants off and Preston’s..the research done in this novel is excellent it is briefly covered in my Master’s degree but the author did her research… everyone could actually learn pertinent information just by reading this.
Oo0o0o Nerdy flirting with super sexy secret spy Preston.. get it elle
Preston “So what variables would I need to guarantee dinner
with you?”
dear chapter 15…yumm…I have never heard a sampler platter described so flirty fun and enticing!
Oh my the cute nerdy “variables” sex talk makes me giggle in a good way… so like something I would do –insert foot in mouth—but Preston just goes with it and she doesn’t feel awkward. Nerdy sex talk who would of guessed (Chapter 16..jsut to get you all excited)
Chapter 17 Elle finally is growing the balls all women need her to grow!
Elle: “Same bullshit, different day.”
Adam: “Elle, I love you!” he blurted out. “I know I’m messing
up right now, but I love you-“
Team Adam (Oh heck no!)
Ooo0o0o Elle: ““I slept with Preston. And if I knew the
words to a song, I’d be singing right now.”… get it girl!
What terrorists! Safe rooms…new identities..secrets… shut the front door now im glues to this book! Video games terrorists the CIA and the FBI… “But I’m just a grad student” …how overwhelming!
Preston leaving no no no no no!
Her thesis was on the government laptop
Terrorists:” that’s the laptop we need open it”
Elle’s mind “ if I open it wrong it will delete all the data on the computer…save the data from falling into the wrongs hands…lose the thesis…… decisions”
I wanna punch both of Elles unsupportive selfish paretns. –I like how real they are and realistic…
What ADAM…go away I want the Sexy Spy back pleaseeeee

4 pages from the end im sad and tehn omg I just squeeled out loud in joy!!!... I wonder here if this could be a sequel but I think the story ended ..
Few misspellings and mixed up works such as her instead of your on page 47 and a few spread out ( not very obvious)
The sex conversations are very childish in my opinion maybe meant for pure humor…but the word thruster and humper make me gag
Overall 3.5 * easy.

I really enjoyed this novel. I want to thank Missy for sending me a copy of it. It fits the New Adult genre PERFECTLY in my opinion because Ellie is right in the middle of figuring things out as she transitions from college to the real world. I am 22, fresh out of college and I can relate to so many of her concerns: practically for money and choice-wise for her career. Then there is the boyfriend and the discovery of a passion for something that doesn't quite fit in with the plans she laid years ago.

She's truly facing the question of what's next and where she should go. The boyfriend was a great mechanism for endearing us to Ellie from the bat. That being said, I felt more connected to her character just by watching her struggle with her parents. Her folks are the most inconsiderate, vapid, selfish individuals I have ever read about. Most parents, when they divorce, at least attempt to put their child first; that includes when making decisions about who to date, remarry and build a new family with. Neither her mother nor father took the time or consideration to do that and it pissed me off. I wanted there to be a moment when Ellie or someone else in her life called the parents out and confronted them - especially her mom - for choosing their new families over their own first born child. I loved the subplot and I hope it gets explored more.

Also, the analysis language was incredibly convincing. The author seemed to know Ellie's field from the inside out. While I enjoyed the burgeoning romance with Preston, I wish there was a deeper connection between him and Ellie. I think every girl wants that moment of "a really gorgeous guy wanting me" and it would have been cool to actually see them fall in love. Neither verbalized it at any point and I didn't see a defining moment when their relationship became more than a fling to Preston. Their last night together was seen through Ellie's eyes and it sort of came out of nowhere. It left me wondering, even after he came back, what his true intentions were and if he really was serious about her. I'm definitely reading the next books in the series to find out.

All in all, I definitely recommend Covert Assignment!

The story was good , it will make a great chick flick / romance comedy movie .

But what i liked most was the cheating subject ; is it ok to cheat then apologize ? do the cheater has the right to cheat even if the relationship is not working , what will be the person who's been cheated on reaction ?
What if it was you ?
I had still have lots of questions about that part ?

Like i said i'd like to see this book on screen more than reading it , but reading it was quite fun too .
Maybe i read too much new adult books with a twist i haven't been surprised but i liked it anyways .

Elle is your average college girl ( almost me -[the boyfriend] ) .
Adam is her stupid cheater boyfriend .
Preston oh Preston is Agent hot-pants .

I'm not so into spies really , my favorite spy was/is Cim Possible so you can see , but the idea of a college student life changing , CIA , agents ; got me . Well i got hooked from the very beginning (Mr. cheaty cheater) got me thinking and hating , i know he's only a fictional character LOL .

Interesting story , liked the writing style , nice characters . I gave it 3.5 stars .

What happens when the plan you’ve had since you were a kid has a wrench thrown in it? That’s exactly what happens to college senior Elle when she discovers intimate pictures between her boyfriend, Adam, and his project partner. As if that isn’t enough, Elle gets a new partner for her thesis, Preston Raddick, who she finds out is really funding her project as an undercover investigation for the CIA. As things heat up between Elle and Preston and she gets closer to completing her thesis, she finds herself thrown into a world of danger where she finds herself questioning if her plan is really what she wants.

The story showed a lot of growth for Elle. She is your typical good college student. She’s worked hard to stay in school funded by only scholarships since her parents find her more of an annoyance than an asset although she has finally come to terms with that. When her world gets turned upside down by her boyfriend’s betrayal and the deception of her thesis, she doesn’t know where to turn. Sure, her best friends and roommates can offer advice about her love life but how can she deviate from her paved pathway. The only person she can speak to about her project is Preston but she wonders where his intentions truly lie. As the bond between her and Preston grows, Elle find herself fighting for her life, showing strength and courage she never thought she had. And speaking of Preston, yum! I can just picture this sexy, mysterious secret agent. From questioning her life plan to sampling new things, he’s the one who really pulls her from her comfort zone. The only real question is if he’s in it for the long haul.

Missy has done a wonderful job of creating a coming of age story. The plot snatches you up and doesn’t let go until the very end. Her main character, Elle, shows a lot of growth throughout and the romance is ahhhmazing. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a hot agent involved either. The ending offers closure for this part of the story but offers a cliffhanger of sorts pulling you into the next book. I can’t wait to read Covert Interview which comes out on December 2nd.

I would recommend this book to fans of new adult romance. With the CIA angle, it would also be appropriate for those who like a good romantic suspense.

If you follow me on twitter you should know that I love Covert Affairs and from previous posts on the blog you should know that I love the Gallagher Girls series. So naturally when I saw Covert Assignment I wanted it. Bad.

Elle has done everything by herself since she has been to college, after her parents divorce and not fitting in with either families she is doing her career for herself despite what her father wants her to do. Elle's boyfriend Adam cheated on her whilst she was at home for winter break, wanting to see what happens she stays with him because two years is a lot to throw away after one mistake right? But then comes along CIA covert operative Preston, hot, older and he likes Elle.

The way that the CIA approaches Elle is such a plausible way for someone to be approached. With the CIA funding her research, she sees that sometimes everything is planned out, bumps come along and new opportunities arise: your future isn't always planned. With Elle getting metadata from the game Sub Rosa and Preston using the data they are finding terrorists who are hiding their activities in the game.

The great thing about Covert Assignment is that it is unpredictable with the aspects of the CIA, the romance isn't instant and Elle still waits to see where her relationship goes with Adam, even though he did cheat on her. Preston is a great influence on Elle, as he allows her to develop and help her understand that her future isn't set in stone, she doesn't have to follow in her father's footsteps. Elle's family was a piece of work and what they put her though I can understand why she wants to please them.

The romance between Elle and Preston is funny when you understand the computer terms (thank you HSC IPT you weren't pointless after all!) and the way that he wants to help her is admirable. There is danger, it wouldn't be a spy book without it but with the CIA and FBI all over Elle shouldn't have much to worry about, you'd think.

Covert Assignment is for those who love Covert Affairs and the Gallagher Girls series. It is a different spin on the New Adult genre and a must read for everyone!

Thanks netgalley for the review copy!

This book started off very nice. The subject that was broached was just enough to capture my attention and keep it through out the novel. The story never got boring and I was kept on my toes the entire time (which was a nice change from all the novels I’ve been reading lately).

Elle was a very relatable character. She was smart, just the right amount of nerdy and rational. Though I think she took too long to deal with the first problem presented to her and that she forgave Preston’s absence at the end way too easily. The least you have to do is ask “Where were you all this time and how is it that you couldn't find one minute to call me, so I could make sure you were ALIVE?”, but she didn’t even do that. She ran into his arms....literally.

Preston was the sexy, too-good-for-her hottie. He was he the right amount of funny and secretive to still be alluring as a boyfriend and a character in general. So over all he was OK. I have nothing to gush about, yet nothing to really throw in his face. So we'll leave it at that C:

Adam is the boyfriend turned ex. He was annoying, pushy and possessive. It was VERY, VERY, VERY frustrating to read about all the s*it he pulled and tried to justify. I lost the count of times I asked myself “Is he serious? Really? No. Just no”. FYI I do not agree with his logic and he's supposed to be smart and nice. Pshhh Yea....Right.

Elle’s parents were portrayed as stuck up, rich snobs who didn’t really care, at all, about her. Period. So I was SHOCKED at the end when her mom and dad gave her presents and were happy and supportive of her decisions in life in general (which weren't the case). They did a complete 180º in a matter of 10 pages.

**I received an ARC by the author for an honest review**

I have to admit that I was very interested in this book as soon as I found it! You know... STRONG ROMANTIC ELEMENT, WORKING FOR CIA, HOT OPERATIVE PRESTON RADDICK, ESPIONAGE...who could resist?

From my point of view, the main protagonist is strong, fearless and very thoughtful - she is about to graduate with her degree in Information Science and is really good at creating models for analyzing metadata...
She has already planned how her life will be like in the future!
Yeah, but turns out that life had already planned her a different destiny! It is quite a shock for Elle: cheating boyfriend, CIA funding her thesis...
What do you think? For me quite a big challenge to read this book!!
I must admit that I was very happy that the plot did not concern only the romantic element. I like when the story is peppered with a good plot. And BE SURE that this book HAS IT!
CIA knows that among the players of the game Sub Rosa are hiding dangerous terrorists and so the chase to capture them begins!
Of course Elle knows how to get useful metadata from this game because she has been working with these data throughout the semester! She´s good at this and CIA knows that! So hot Preston starts to work with Elle.
The chemistry between Elle and Preston is undeniable!! Funny dialogues, Preston´s need to help her, Elle´s stubbornness, hints of secrets which could be revealed in the second book?? Right?? I do not know, but that means that WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO the sequel!!

I agree that the author showed us how to write a book in the other interesting new style on the New Adult genre!

I will add that I RECOMMEND you read "Covert Assignment" because throughout the book you will EXPERIENCE A REAL DANGER, ROMANTIC SPARKS and finally, you will be instructed on the importance of computer terms :D ... that´s cool, right?

/+/ I think this book would be really good movie!
/-/ Short story and lack of details (what the characters look like, clothing details)

Thanks to the author for providing an e-copy of this book.

I felt for Elle in the beginning when her boyfriend now ex was such a douchebag. I mean come on did you really think she would fall for the excuses you used and at first she was skeptical but gave him the benefit of the doubt. It wasn’t until she was in a bathroom overhearing a conversation that she realized he was lying. Such a rat he was. But don’t worry Elle had Preston Raddick to fall to. And what a fall he was. So HAWT and a co-worker to boot. Problem with Preston is he doesn’t believe in relationships with his job but Elle I think wants one. Shame because in the long run she will lose one fine man who likes her and wants to shower her with attention when he can and let her be her own person at the same time. He supports her and is there for her but just has a problem with the idea of a relationship.

Don’t scare him off Elle. In this fun high adventure story Elle is in college about to graduate and follow her plan but I wonder if it’s her plan or her dad’s plan for herself. She will graduate go to grad school and do something she doesn’t like to please someone who didn’t even realize what her major was or that she was getting a master’s degree. Jeesh talk about clueless family. Anywhoo her master’s work involves her in a high stakes game with computers and terrorists. Imagine thinking oh I am just doing data analysis on a game but really the game is a place for terrorists to meet and plot oh yeah and some people are really into the game and not terrorists. This is were Preston comes in play.He works for the CIA who sponsored her research and needs her help pronto so they can get these guys.

As they work towards justice, Elle loses her boyfriend which is no loss believe me, finds her independence and the support and friendship of a guy who is HAWT and wants to explore her and does wonderful scenes there, gets adventure and gets a voice as she finds herself in the process.

This is a fun adventurous book that will leave you wanting more and rooting for Elle to succeed.

Given by the author for an honest review

Covert Assignment was AMAZING!!!

I was 1000% addicted to Elle,Preston,CIA and all the mystery and espionage surrounding them from the very first page!!!

I remember being half way through the book and thinking "God,please tell me that there's a next book coming up..It's too good to end in only one book!"..And after I finished it,I contacted the author Missy..She's really great by the way..Anyhow..She told me there are 2 more books..I literally jumped up and down from glee..
And that was my happy playful journey of reading it..

>>Elle is really a great person..She may not appear very assertive...But she IS fiery..She's stubborn, persistent, intelligent and pretty damn funny..She takes people seriously..She thinks before she acts and takes every variable into consideration!..I found myself relating to her very much,I admit..I'm an overthinker just like her..But when we decide on a course of action, when we know what we want, when we know what's the best choice for us..We just go for it!..
And if it weren't obvious,I clearly state that I adore Elle!

>>Preston..mmm..He's the mysterious CIA operative..And Hot of course..He knows the perfect thing to say..He pretty much seems like the perfect man..He may have some commitment issues..And he certainly has secrets..We shall see in the next book!!(and yes I'm grinning as I write that)...

>>Now about the rest of the characters..I can't say that they made a good impression on me,regarding their personalities..Her friends didn't seem to me like very good friends..Her ex is a jerk..Her family is weird, good weird I think..They have their moments..

I really liked Elle's advisor at the university..He seemed very admirable, intelligent, kind and he certainly loved Elle as his own daughter..

In conclusion,Go and Buy this book!!!It's amazing!

RECEIVED AS AN ARC FOR REVIEW

I really loved this story and only hope there is more to come in the life of Elle Paquet.

The description of this story definitely caught my attention, even though it was not the kind of book that would normally be in my top TBR list. I wasn't sure what to expect since this is the first book for the author, but she didn't disappoint! It was refreshing to read a New Adult story with such a mature and realistic approach. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised!!

Elle is a college student looking forward to graduation for her masters degree in Information Science. She has a ten-year plan, which includes her college sweetheart of almost three years, until he cheats on her with a classmate. Her world is turned upside down and her "plan" for their future is not looking as bright as it once did.

CIA recruiters show up on campus and they are interested in recruiting Elle for future employment. She is assigned to work with the hot Preston Raddick. Let me just pause for moment to think of this hottie *fans herself* lol!! Elle is surprised when this hot guy shows interest in her!! I mean let's be real, she's a geek not a supermodel. It doesn't help that her long time boyfriend just cheated on her with a hot, surgically enhanced, classmate. He's just not the type of guy she should be with.

The story has so much to offer. It's about self discovery, realistic family circumstances and situations and about a realistic look into the future. Not everything happens exactly as planned, but in the end you just might find that those variables lead to a perfect match!

I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to what this author has in store for the future.

I really enjoyed this book. I was pulled into the story immediately due to what her boyfriend put her through. I appreciated how the author didn't portray things as clear cut. She wanted to kick him to the curb but she didn't want to throw their future away either. Her approach was incredibly mature and it was refreshing to see that in a New Adult book.

The CIA stuff was great. It was plausible (well as plausible as you can make things and it still be exciting).

The family drama was heart-wrenching. In fact, the family drama was the only part of this book that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Granted, I would never have enjoyed the drama part but the conclusion could have provided satisfaction. Unfortunately, the conclusion, family-wise, didn't seem all that plausible. And I really wish she could have told them where she was going to be working (you know, that the timing would have worked better).

This book is much more about the heroine herself than any romance and that, in my opinion, was the right move. It would be hard to convince anyone of a HEA given the circumstances.

Eleanor Paquet returns from a less than satisfying holiday with her mother and stepfather to photos of her boyfriend with his lab partner in flagrante delicto. This not the last of the shocking news awaiting Elle, her lab assignment collecting and analyzing gaming data has in fact been part of a covert operation for the CIA.

Preston Raddick, the field agent assigned to the op is way out of her league or is he? Before long Elle is fielding the attention of her quasi ex-boyfriend and her very attractive CIA liaison. Elle isn’t prepared to abandon her life plan i.e. marriage and children with the unreliable Adam regardless of the opinions of her friends nor is she able to fully commit to him either. Elle is faced with the difficult decision of picking the life she has had laid out for her or taking the road less traveled. To read the complete review please see Penny Dreadful Books and Reviews.

This was a fun book to read. We meet Elle, who is starting her last semester before graduation. She's been in a relationship with Adam for over two years, and right off the bat we learn that he cheated on her. The emotions while reading this were hard in the beginning. I hated Adam so much (I just can't stand cheaters, even in books), but Elle is a better person than me so she's conflicted on whether to forgive him or not since she had plans to marry him someday. And he seems to be truly remorseful. At the same time, Elle starts working on a project for the CIA with hot agent Preston. And while he's gorgeous, he isn't offering her a stable future like Adam is. We get to follow Elle as she questions the plans she had made for herself, and as she contemplates whether or not she's willing to veer off that path.
It was a well written book, and I look forward to reading more books by this author, especially this series.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the book I wasn't ready for it to end. I want more Preston! My only criticism is the repetition of the description of what information science is. Besides that, I'm ready for book 2 :)

Favorite Quote(s):

“‘Will we- will we know who-’ Elle began, but Agent Linden understood her question and gave a simple answer. ‘No. It’s better if you don’t know them: you’re less likely to accidentally give them away.’ That made sense. Elle guessed she’d just have to trust they were there while she and Preston sat there like bait. Bait. Holy. Shit.”

Favorite Character: PRESTON! Super secret spy guys…
First Line:

“‘Have you seen them yet?’”

My Musings: You couldn’t possibly imagine the intrigue that I was feeling when I saw this novel on Netgalley. The title prompted me to click on the cover, and the synopsis had me automatically clicking request. Luckily, I was fast approved, and I dove right in! I mean–a book about the CIA? Of course I’m up for it!

Elle is a Information Science major. She deals with numbers, models, and data. So when her boyfriend of two years is caught on camera cheating on her, she wishes for a model to tell her what to do. But Adam swears that Elle is the only one for him, that it was a drunken mistake. But Elle isn’t so sure. Then Elle finds out that the company funding her graduate thesis, Anderson Advertising, is a shell company for the CIA and that they’re using her data in order to locate a band of terrorists. So when they send Operative Preston Raddick to work closer with Elle, she’s not sure what to think. And when they offer her a job, she’s even more torn. But working with Preston comes with benefits–because Preston has the hots for her, and he may be just what she needs to get her mind off of Adam. But Elle soon finds out that working for the CIA is more than what she bargained for.

I really really enjoyed this novel! It’s not every day that you find a novel about the CIA and spies. It was a TOTAL dream come true! I was looking for something unique to read, and I definitely found it in this novel. This novel jumps right into the drama of Elle getting back from break and finding the pictures of her boyfriend and another girl online. And this is an ongoing thing throughout the novel. I loved the apprehension that Elle was feeling about whether to forgive Adam or not. It wasn’t just a ‘dump him and move onto the hot spy’ type of thing. There was actual contemplation about her relationship with Adam, which made it more than realistic, because they had been going out for two years and had all of these plans that she wasn’t just willing to throw away.

“‘I don’t know all the necessary…variables…’ What the hell was she saying? She knew she should just shut up and enjoy what he was doing, but she couldn’t hold the words back.
‘Baby. I know all the variables to get the desired outcome,’ Preston assured her.”

Throw in the hot operative, and you’ve got yourself a nice love triangle. And I’m sorry to say, but I was totally Team Preston. I mean, hellooooo? Hot spy? Duh. Preston was awesome. He was intelligent and masculine. And a spy. What more convincing do you need? He really cared about Elle and her well being, which was really endearing. He liked her for her, even though she was the nerdy girl who loves data. He was able to look past her geeky interior and liked her for the other aspects of her personality. It was really cute.

And the two of them together were almost too hot to handle! They were a great couple to read. The spy and the nerd? Two people who are seemingly on opposite sides of the universe put together. And they complemented each other so well. And Preston believed in her doing what SHE wanted to do with her life, and never forced any decisions on her. He was nothing but supportive of her. So cute.

“‘This way,’ Preston whispered right in Elle’s ear as he took her forearm. They ran away from the squeaky door, down the hallway to the indoor walkway. Elle stumbled a bit but was able to keep up with him for the most part. The indoor walkway was dimply lit, but it felt like bright sunlight when they reached it. She was shocked to see Preston holding a gun as he pulled her along.
He had a gun? Okay, she knew he was a spy and all, but…he had a gun? How did that manage to be both dangerous and hot at the same time? She needed to get a grip. Her heart should be pounding out of fear, not excitement. Seriously.”

The ending of this novel was where all the action happened. In addition to a super amazing love story, there was also some actual spy action happening in this novel. The chapters with the action had my heart pounding and had me crossing my fingers for the success of the characters. And it wasn’t that out of the way, no way that could happen action. It was all very realistic, staged on a college campus. It made me think twice about the people around me. It was so realistic and well woven it had me wondering if Missy was a spy herself!

The last page of this novel had me at a stand still, hoping to gosh that there was a second novel. Luckily there is, and the wait isn’t too long! Covert Assignment was a fantastically written and thrilling novel, with a romance to die for and heart stopping action. I can’t wait to see what else Marciassa has in store for us!

“Knowing what’s the best match is the tough part, isn’t it? Especially since everything has its dull moments.”–Elle

Elle has her life planned out. Considering she loves finding order in chaos, it’s no surprise that she’s getting her Master’s Degree in Information Science. But with one quarter left until graduation, Elle returns back to school to find her life suddenly losing order and nothing is going to plan. The shocking part? She’s discovering that sometimes, mathematical modeling can’t answer everything. Sometimes, you have to let your heart decide…

“So what variables would I need to guarantee dinner with you?”–Preston

This is a wonderful New Adult novel that covers so many of the complicated questions those about to graduate from college must face. Elle is a great nerdy/geeky character who strongly believes in mathematical modeling and her research. She loves information science, despite the fact that she hasn’t shared her love for her master’s degree focus with her absentee parents. In fact, her parents don’t even know that she finished her BS degree already and is working on her MS, which is really sad when you think about it. I felt so bad for her since she felt like she didn’t belong anywhere considering her divorced parents had remarried and started new families.

Luckily, she has two very, very loyal friends (who I absolutely adore) and a great college mentor. Back to the unlucky side, she has a cheating boyfriend that she just can’t imagine breaking up with. This again goes back to the feeling bad for her because of her parents’ nonchalance with her and preoccupation with their respective new families. Elle has to struggle with her feelings with breaking up with a long term boyfriend, because that meant throwing the future she had planned out away (which was part of her coping mechanism for feeling left out of her parents’ new families). As I said earlier, I’m really glad her best friends helped her through this stage.

So, we’ve covered lasting friendships, degrees, significant others…what’s the other major new graduate fear? The dreaded job search! When Elle lands on the CIA radar (in a good way!), she has to decide if she should continue with her ‘safe’ plan and continue into more graduate school like her father expects her to or travel down an unknown path without a safety net. This was a great plot line, especially since it’s for the CIA, which means she couldn’t talk about it with other people. This really tough decision had to be all hers. Oh, and as a yummy bonus, the CIA storyline comes with hottie spy, Preston (medium heat level!).

Overall, this is an enjoyable read covering common issues that new graduates have to face. The book covers a semester so there are some time jumps that I wish could have been fleshed out more, and while reading, I felt like I was being told a story rather than being immersed in the story. I would have liked less about Elle dealing with her cheating boyfriend and more excitement with the CIA storyline. There isn’t much action despite the CIA factor although there are some tense scenes. The terrorist plot was stereotypical and not too exciting. The book’s strength lies in Elle’s character growth. It felt like a fast read, and for most of the first part of the book I felt like I was waiting for the book to take off. I do recommend this to those who enjoy character-driven New Adult Contemporary reads dealing with issues common to college graduates. This is a 3 out of 5 for me!

3 1/2 stars rounded to 4!

I reviewed this at MustReadBooksOrDie with my friend Shelley!

Shel: It helped knowing that this is a 3 book series before I started because I didn't expect a simple and easy wrap up at the end. And before we go any further you should know that all 3 books are out...so if this series looks good to you, there will be no waiting to get to the end. Court: Right...though even knowing it was a series ahead of time still had me worried how it would end. Rest assured though, this one wraps up and doesn't have an ugly cliffhanger, in case you were worried!

Shel: Honestly, the plot isn't really fast moving for the first half of the book. Instead this first part gives us some insight into Elle and her plans and her douchey boyfriend, Adam. We come to learn that because Elle has divorced parents who somehow lost her in the shuffle of remarrying and children, and because of this, stability and having a game plan are very important for her to feel safe. As we continue to learn and understand her in this first part, it's easy to see that her friends (while sometimes pushy and frustrating) take on the role of family and begin to push Elle to think about straying from the plan.It helps when she begins to work with Preston, a CIA operative, who also shows her the benefit of looking beyond the plan...to learn how to be flexible and relax when things don't go the way you think they should. Court: Her friends and family had me sympathizing with her, and wanting her to develop that backbone a bit from the very first few pages. I agree, the beginning was slow...but not terrible considering there was quite a bit of story to set up. I can say that it didn't begin how I thought it would...and how she gets landed in the middle of this operation was unbelievable, but fun. I love the idea, as I am a big Covert Affairs TV show fan.

Shel: As the novel progresses, the plot involving her and Preston becomes more prevalent. It isn't just their "fling" that changes things for her, but also her desire to change some things in her life...her plan changes. She begins to question life after college. But as she contemplating all of this, some unsettling things happen that cause her to stop and ponder if maybe she should go back to the plan. Court: I loved how he helped her start making decisions for herself. And still, it was funny when people starting pointing changes out to her, she still doubted herself. That was hard, but you know that is unfortunately how it can go. There is one plotline that she hung onto tooth and nail for far too long, and I think you'll see it too...if she had held on much longer I wouldn't have been sympathizing with her anymore!

Shel: Before you know it, this first novel in the series ends. In the very near future, we'll have book two reviewed for you to give you a little insight on where these characters are headed next. Court: I hope in a good place, but you know how second books in a trilogy are destined to go. I sense more heartbreak for Elle in the future even though she is starting to develop a fierce sense of self. And don't you worry...there is bound to be more espionage and CIA lingo in the mix. I like it.

What a cool idea for a book. Before even starting this I was intrigued. Elle has finally found a place she feels she fits in: college. That is until she find out her boyfriend is a horn-dog and sees nothing wrong with banging chicks on the side. This puts Elle in an understandable funk and she decides to focus on school even if she’s not really looking forward to it.

Rather than get a boring Library Science degree, Elle is studying how to analyze and track data. When CIA analysts visit her class she never expects her work to catch their eye and put her on radar. Sure she fantasizes about becoming a kick-ass undercover agent but she quickly brushes the thought aside. Well, until the CIA comes knocking asking Elle for help.

Her work is easy, continue analyzing data and share her findings with the Hot ‘Hollywood guy’. “So she got to work on her thesis with a hot guy. This semester was getting more and more interesting by the minute.” Little does Elle know, her entire life is about to become more interesting.

Heavy flirtations with Preston leave Elle wanting more. But his job with the CIA and her being a student complicate things, plus there’s the whole issue with her ex to deal with.

The first half of the book was great. Elle’s school work and life is turned upside down by this CIA offer. She learns about safe rooms, guns and criminals. Things she never thought to imagine for herself. Out of nowhere, Elle becomes a target and things become hairy. In regards of her relationship, she’s none too keen on continuing a relationship with cheating scum but at the same time Elle doesn’t want to be alone. Plus she’s unsure of she wants to throw away years over what could be one mishap. All the while her mind is in turmoil she can’t shut out thoughts of Preston. Needless to say her ex Adam is a tool and I couldn’t wait for her to wake up and smell the roses.

About 75% things just go crazy. Everything speeds up and happens so fast. Suddenly Preston is not shy in hiding his affection and the two begin a somewhat turbulent and smokey affair. But Elle is still in the dark. Preston works for the CIA and she is more unsure of her future than ever before. Just when she thought she had it all figured out, everything got turned upside down and she has to make decisions that will affect her entire future. Will she decide to join them? Is she doing it for the right reasons or because of Preston? Hell, she can barely even figure out where things between her and him stand.

When it ended I was briefly baffled until I realized the series will continue. Elle’s future will continue to change and her with it. I’m looking forward to see what other crazy situations she can find herself in and to see how things with Preston work out. I wouldn’t say there’s a cliff-hanger ending but it’s clear there’s a lot of unanswered questions. This was a very different idea and worked well as a NA novel. There was mystery, scandal and pure temptation in the form of Preston. There are a lot of small details that you just have to read for yourself to not spoil the surprise. But overall this was a very thrilling read and I can’t wait for the following book in the series.

GENRE: New Adult
THEME: Contemporary, Romance, Spy
RECEIVED: Tour
BLOG: http://seeingnight.blogspot.com/

REVIEW:
I’m a sucker for spy books and television shows that revolve around girls kicking some major butt and not afraid of being super smart. Covert Assignment is a mix of Alias and Covert Affairs, it focuses on a young soon to be graduate trying to find her path by using her smarts and following her heart when it comes to her career. It has a mix of romance, college drama, family drama and of course suspenseful spy action.

Covert Assignment follows Elle who is about to graduate with her master’s degree in Information Science and then she plans to go on to get her JD/MBA. But things start to go down hill after her long time boyfriend cheats on her and she discovers her father pushed to get her into where he would like her to attend. She isn’t so excited about her so-called set plans anymore. She wants to succeed on her own without help, thus comes an opportunity she never thought of, the CIA wants to recruit her.

Elle is super smart and I mean even her conversations have discussions about metadata and such that I can’t really understand. But her impressive thesis catches the eye of the CIA and has been helping many operatives during missions. She is asked to work with one of their field agents to uncover a possible threat. The agent is Preston, he is everything her soon to be ex-boyfriend is not. Especially after her boyfriend cheated on her in the worst of ways that is actually went viral. I thought Elle was very relatable; she goes through what many college students experience, trying to find the right career and life path. My only issue with her character was that she couldn’t make up her mind about her terrible boyfriend, the answer was obvious but she was blind to what was right in front of her. She however earns a lot of points for her smart in choosing to go with her gut and sticking up to herself when it comes to her family whom I didn’t like one bit.

Preston Raddick is the CIA agent working undercover at the University with Elle; he needs the information that only she can analyze. The readers don’t get to know much about his background just yet, but in the next book I’m sure were going to get some answers. He does have a military background and really knows how to heat up a room, especially when it comes to Elle.

Overall I enjoyed the suspense, humor and romance. The characters were colorful and kept me interested from beginning to end, even the secondary characters such as Elle’s two best friends were hilarious and always kept me laughing. The spy aspects were exciting and seriously made me think about how life would be keeping so many secrets. I will defiantly be continuing this serious and look forward to what Marciassa has in store with Elle’s next mission.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a new adult novel with some adult language and sexual content meant for mature readers. Fans of Reunited in Danger by Joya Fields and Frigid by J Lynn will enjoy Covert Assignment by Missy Marciassa.

I loved Covert Assignment. It was an awesome book. It was so cool! Honestly, I hadn't expected it to be that awesome since I'm actually not one to read things that have much to do with things involving CIA and what not. I just watch those shows on TV. :P I feel like mystery books are better left to the uh... older women... But they're still cool! Though this wasn't really a mystery book like I had expected.
Elle is so cool! She's so smart and strong and all. Smart is the new sexy people. ;) But seriously it's amazing she can do that. I had no idea that that was what Library Science even was! And it's so cool because the next day I found out that my mom is going to study Library Science! But I doubt she'll get a job in the CIA. :P Though that would be awesome. And then I could met someone like Preston. ;)
This little "fling" with Preston is pretty darn serious if you ask me. Elle needs help defining what a fling is! Someone go get that girl a dictionary. Preston should be mine! But I'm glad that her teacher introduced her to Preston and those two CIA guys. Though the stuff they go through. Man how can she live without becoming incredibly paranoid and crept out. If I were her I would never be alone in a room ever because I'd be too scared. I'd also be glancing over my shoulder every single second scared that something is gonna happen.
Anyways, Preston is awesome. He's so strong, fun, and smart. This whole "trying new things" thing is so much fun! If only it happened to me too. :') He's so much better than Adam. Just saying.
Adam is a complete jerk. He was a nice friend before the "incident". I can't believe he did that though. And I can't believe that Elle took so long to turn him away! I mean honestly?! She could do so much better!
Elle's friends are amazing. They're so sweet and they contrast each other so perfectly which is why they work so well. She's lucky to have such great friends. I don't have friends like that, but I wish I did. Even though they won't live in the same city anymore, they'll still be incredibly close. Their friendship is kinda rare. Or at least I think it is. I don't have any best friends so yeah..
When I finished the book, I literally closed it and put it down and ran to my computer made sure that there was another book to the series and I'm so thankful that there is! It's called Covert Interview and I have a feeling it's going to be amazing. I can't wait to read it.
This book gets a 5/5, because I utterly love it. Thank you Missy for sending it to me!
What makes this book different from all others? And why should anyone care? Because it's new and refreshing and just different from all the other books I and most people have been reading.
Did this book meet my high expectations? Yes it did.
Would I recommend this book and to who? I would recommend this to anyone who would like to read something different.

Apparently FBI/CIA/DEA stories are becoming a favorite of mine because from the second I started reading about Elle and her CIA secret missions I was hooked. We meet Elle in her final year of college and going through some pivotal moments that are changing the direction she thought her life was heading. She is wicked smart and graduating isn't a problem but the 10 year plan she had in her head seems to come to a complete halt when her boyfriend is caught cheating. Enter the CIA and hot supervising officer named Preston with a new challenge to help them with cases. Of course she will take the opportunity to help and she is more than capable but she doesn't know how this will change her whole outlook on her life and future.

Elle was an approachable character in my eyes. She wasn't the hardcore government agent who kill you with her pinky finger, but more of the nerd/smart/computer-y type of person. She had a strength in here that I'm not even sure she realized throughout the story, but at the end of the day she is going to find you hacking a system over busting in your door. It worked for this story because of how much growth you see from beginning to end. She builds her confidence both as a techy and as a woman throughout and that's what I love to see in a female lead. She only bothered me when it came to her ex-bf Adam and his cheating. She was going to take him back, MULTIPLE TIMES, even though he was clearly alright with cheating. That is never cool with me, I wish she just had the gumption to say scram and that be that. I did, however, understand why it took her longer to really get that it wasn't something to forgive and look past. She came from a divorced home where she never felt comfortable interacting with her parents because of it and she was so focused on making her life plan work that it got in the way of the logical side of her brain. The part that looked at data and found patterns and loved those patterns. I did appreciate the fact that she slowly came to terms with everything around her and really made a gut decision that was good for her.

The relationships with other people where what spurred this book on for me. Of course there was all the high stakes danger and CIA-ness going on which was fascinating, but the way Elle and Adam, or Elle and Preston or even Elle and the CIA interacted with each other was what made this book awesome. Character development and dealing with situational problems moved this story along and fast, especially at the end of the book. Preston and Elle's vibes were hot and heavy enough that you could feel their connection through the pages, even if they didn't even know what was going on at first. Adam is just a tool, but at least he was a helpful tool to get Elle where she needed to be in the end. The crime fighting college nerd will have you intrigued from start to finish and really love reading about her coming-to-adulthood phase

Note: This book is New Adult and may be unsuitable for readers under 17. There are lots of mature language and explicit sexual situations.

Note #2: This is take 2 of this review. I got 3/4th of the way done with my last one and my computer crashed. -_-

Covert Assignment reminded me a little bit of the tv show Chuck. (Which is on Netflix right now and is AWESOME!) Chuck is about a spy for the CIA and NSA and part of what they do was recruit students out of a college. Elle gets recruited by the CIA in school because of the work she was doing on her masters thesis. They were really impressed with her analtyics work on metadata. They send over super hot agent Preston to oversee her research and to collect the data she gets for a mission.

Elle is super talented. She is so ambitious. She already got her bachelors degree and she is currently working on her masters thesis. Then she wants to go to law school and get her joint MBA/JD degree, she is all over the place! Not too many information science majors go to law school or business school. She has three completely different careers going on at once. I have to say after I got to know her, the information science major/career seems to be the best fit for her. I just couldn't see her in business school. Elle felt like she is just a plain little mouse, but she couldn't be more wrong. I loved that Preston never saw her that way. He thought she was one of a kind and he was totally right. Elle is bursting with passion and energy and she is just such a fun person.

I also loved how logical she was. She is logical to a fault. For example, when her D-bag of a boyfriend/ex boyfriend wanted to meet up and explain why he cheated on her with that skank Bella (Elle's words, not mine! Alright, I completely agree.) Elle uses logic to break down the situation into a step by step analogy of how they are like a broken algorithm. It made me chuckle. And holy cow, I hated Adam! I can't think of a single character in any book that I have hated more than Adam. He was just such a jerk! I can't believe how awful he was to Elle. How cruel and mean he was to her. He wanted her back together with him, but at the same time he put her down and told her she wouldn't be able to do any better than him and oh yea, he continued to cheat on her! I mean, how low can you get. I am so glad that Elle was so strong with him.

I am so excited to read the next book. Covert assignment had me on the edge of my seat. The main appeal for me was Preston and Elle. I just loved reading about the two of them. At first glance they seem to be so different but at the same time, they work so well together. This is going to be a series that I continue for sure. Covert Assignment was a total hit for me.

My thoughts (Theo~): This is not your typical love story that you just await for it to happen and cross your fingers every single once in a while. Heck no! This is not about crazy sex or amazing skills in bed, this is sweet, romantic, a once in a lifetime chances!
Elle is a college student, ready to change the world and make everything feel better. It is all about the perception of the programming, not the programming itself. I would like to mention that if you do not hold a general idea about dates and programming don’t be afraid; you will understand them in this book. But as a girl whose major were informatics in High School and finished with a degree to prove that I can say that I’ve enjoyed this far more I’ve anticipated.
The story evolved around Elle who gets brutally cheated by her so-loving beautiful boyfriend that also knows everything about programming. They complete each other, but after the absurdity of being cheated on and everyone to know about it since the pictures ended on the internet, she feels lost and not ready to even punch the bastard.
So she stays calm and waits. For what? Even I have no idea. But she just stands in stand-by and hopes for a change, and those changes does not wait to appear. Right after the Christmas holiday she is back to classes and to her surprise some CIA agents appear with some forms of employment for the government right after graduation. She does not hope for anything, since her ideas are not that big, but when her professor asks her into his office she goes, like she always does when they are working on her program.
Not little is her surprise when she sees that two of the CIA agents that recently conducted the presentation in her class are there and among them is another one. Typical tall, dark and handsome. But she still has to sort her things with her ex-still?-boyfriend, and she is absolutely sure that he will never look her way more than once.
But she is wrong. He does expect nothing more than sex, and he is frank about that, but he also backs down when the boyfriend things come into plain view. So, Elle, for the sake of all the time she spent with Adam she gives him another shoot, but when he is trying to make her do the naughty stuff with her she just feels dirty and not ready so she pushed him away.
One thing leads to another and Raddick is back to game and ready to rock her world.
Lots of secrets are waiting to be discovered. Terrorists are here to make her give the information. Bad people want her. Everything bad is about to happen. Will they survive? Will the CIA save the one they employed? Will everything be alright?

Happy readying everyone~!

E-ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review

This is one of those books that I want to explore without knowing what to expect at the end. Although having a synopsis that describes it well, I could give me an idea that would take way in the next few hours of my read.

There is a moment in life in which everyone has to choose their path … even if you’ve already planned long ago. I think to some it has already happened, many are on that road and others might soon be in it.

And the first point is: Elle, She had his life planned, with boyfriend, career and a “future” of dream, but something goes wrong with your boyfriend and your career give a turn with major changes. Now for the part of the suspect, alias “boyfriend” called: Adam, let’s add to friends Elle: Marni and Tina her good friends could will helping to decide to forgive the treason or send to Adam away from your life! On the side of his career we have the CIA which has a clear interest in working with her and the sexy spy Raddick Preston, which could make her forget to Adam and his betrayal and put action, suspense and romance in your life.

What surprises me of the book? is very well managed the New adult genre, has handled the change very well what is the supposed entrance” to adulthood”, involving new stumbles, new hopes, new failures, new decisions and new responsibilities and add a break with the action of the spies and something refreshing to the subject of romance.

Elle was developing very well as the main character, has all the features that should be the protagonist, and I find it very natural without stop being a character. Adam Well exasperated me!
Elle’s friends, Marni and Tina were the spark!, Is one of those friends who could be your Angel and devil but even so seek your good.
And Preston … I would think that in the second part we will know more about Preston! is a very good character combined with the main character, has that exact combination or click to carry the story. He was definitely my favorite character.

Personally was refreshing to read something different from what I usually read, it was fun, entertaining and makes me want to continue exploring more about spy novels (ok the only current reference I have of spies is Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD with Phil Coulson “resurrected” and my crazy theory that has the Iron Man’s device ,or also some vintage Get Smart)

A slight, fun and entertaining read and a good choice for people who, like me ,are exploring this world,

I give this book 3.5 stars.

Elle is working through her senior year of college and working diligently on her thesis for her masters in information science. At the start of her last semester, she learns that she is not handling data from an advertising company, as she has thought, but is actually helping the CIA analyze data on a possible terrorist attack. Her personal life is on the fritz since taking a break from her boyfriend of two years. Lucky for Elle, she meets Preston, the sexy sorta-spy who works with the data she analyzes to track down the terrorist threat. They become close and help each other with more than the data analysis. As the threat escalates, the pressure to track down pertinent information increases. In addition to this pressure, Elle has to find a way to tell her best friends and her distant parents that she is no longer planning to pursue an additional graduate degree at her father's alma mater. The action of this book was a tad anti-climactic for my taste. It seemed to escalate rapidly and be resolved rather painlessly. My only complaint about the plot is that the terrorists were Muslim. I just feel like that role is overdone. It is annoying for media to continue to make Muslims the enemy. I understand that there are Islamic terrorists in the world; however there are also terrorists from every religion, ethnicity, race, nationality, etc. It would have been more refreshing to not identify the terrorists by any specific indicator that might target a specific group. But maybe that's just me.

I really liked the characters in this book. Elle is sort of the nerd amongst her friends, but she is also stronger than she thinks, funny, and really good at what she does. Her best friends Tina and Marni are a good balance for each other. One is more strong-headed and the other more understanding about different perspectives. They are always there for Elle and support her regardless of her decisions, so long as she keeps them in the loop. I was really glad that Elle didn't put up with Adam's crap because he was sort of a jerk. Preston seemed cool and spy-like which makes him a professional BAMF.

I think that this book was a great start to what could be a really interesting story. I have a feeling that when I read the anticipated sequel(s?) in the Covert series, this book will have served as a great introduction to the story as a whole. I will definitely be on the lookout for other works by this author.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. (Thanks for mailing me a hard copy of the book!!!)

I wasn't too sure what to expect when I received this book. I will totally admit that in this case I totally judge the book by its cover and thought that it was something for a lot younger audience. Once I had read the description however I was totally hooked. I have never really read anything like this, with the spy/college theme, and I really enjoyed it.

I really liked Elle, she was a typical and realistic student. She wasn't all OTT with her insecurities like some college characters can be. She had family problems, and although sometimes they got her down, she didn't mope over them. Her problems didn't take over the fun of the storyline. I really liked this about her, plus reading from Elle's POV could at times be really funny and I enjoyed seeing the world from Elle's mind.

This book had a great 'spy' story line within it, and its not a silly unrealistic one, it's totally something you could totally see happening in real life. Plus, with the story line and Elle's work with the CIA comes Preston. He was the perfect amount of mysterious and sexy and I could take my eyes off him (well the words about him!) Chemistry between Elle and Preston is there, but as Preston is CIA and one a mission (or whatever it is the CIA call them) he knows not to get involved with Elle. This is not a romance! (Doesn't stop the steamy moments though, and trust me, they are STEAMY!)

I really did like the Spy story line, it was quite refreshing to read about something other then a college girl falling in love with a bad boy. Don't get me wrong, I love them stories, but sometimes it's nice t have something different. There are some pretty action packed scenes in this book and the whole story moves at a nice pace that keeps us hooked all the way through. I will admit that most of the time I had no idea what Elle and Preston were talking about when they went into all the technical computer parts of their "mission", but I think that it was just my dumb mind not able to keep up, as it was actually explained pretty well.

I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. Missy does a really good job of keeping us hooked the whole way through this book and ends it with a very nice set up for book 2 (which I only just found out has already been released! YEAY!)

One semester from leaving her university in her past and preparing for adult life, Elle has it all worked out. Go to her father's alma mater and double in law and business, marry her college sweetheart Adam and then settle down and start a family by the time Elle and Adam are in their early thirties. Sounds perfect, right? Spanner is thrown into the works when Elle returns from Christmas break to find intimate photos of Adam and someone who very definitely isn't Elle.

Determined not to let Adam's cheating ways ruin her final semester, Elle tries to work out if she wants to salvage that relationship whilst still working on her thesis project. A project that - unknown to Elle - is funded by the CIA. Working closely with a field operative, Preston Raddick, Elle manages to somehow prepare for adult life whilst making the most of her time in college.

I love the concept of this novel. It reminded me of the tv show, Chuck - with top secret agencies cherry picking graduating classes for their newest recruits. Elle is apparently very logical and methodical which would make her a great analyst. However, I didn't see very much of her analytical nature when it came to dealing with her personal life. Elle came across as incredibly judgemental and (especially with regards to the Adam situation) needed her friends to make her decisions for her. I think her reaction and actions to Adam's betrayal were slightly hollow with Elle never talking about how she felt about the whole situation. It made me like her less as a character because I perceived her to be more upset about her future plans being ruined rather than having anything to do with feelings or heartbreak.

Spy wise - I like where this book was heading. Elle got a taste of exactly what life as an operative might entail. There's drama and slight suspense although it only really occurred in the tail end of the book. Elle's friends were a little over the top but fiercely loyal and Elle definitely needed that. I had some issues with some of the things that occurred in this book (like what was with Elle's family at the end. That felt so completely out of character) but overall it was an entertaining read and a new adult novel that focused on the bridge between college and adulthood.
