“What, no last kiss for me?” I ask, my pout on full display. Mickey looks at me as if he suddenly remembers that this will probably be our last kiss until January and heads toward me. Pulling me in his arms, he kisses me with such passion and need that it makes me weak in the knees.
“I could spend a whole eternity kissing you, my heaven,” he says, breathlessly. “I love you, Laylah. You are my world, remember that.”
“I love you too, Mickey,” I whisper to him. Stretching up onto my tiptoes, I hug the love of my life, wishing that we could stay like this forever.”
Sixty days; the length of a traditional Puerto Rican Christmas, starting the day before thanksgiving and ending as soon as January 6th. That’s how long Laylah’s entire family will be visiting.
Laylah has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Mickey, since she was ten. Even at such a young age, she knew her love was true. At thirteen, her family moved away, leaving her love and his beautiful dimpled smile behind. At eighteen, Laylah went off to California to attend college. At nineteen, Laylah returned home to her grandmother’s, broken and lost as to where her place in the world was.
Six years is how long it had been since Laylah and Mickey had seen each other; six years is how long it took for them to finally be together. Two years later, Mickey and Laylah are going strong. They have built a life together, a life they want to live forever. One problem, only a few select people know that they are a couple, let alone living together. Now, the entire family is coming to stay for sixty days to celebrate the holidays after years apart.
Will this family be able to endure the next sixty days filled with secrets, lies, and deceit that threatens to break them apart? Will Mickey and Laylah's love be able to withstand the next sixty days? Join Laylah as she embarks on this journey of family, love, and finding her true self.
I didn't finish the novel, I read 30% of it and I stopped reading it for awhile and got back to reading after 3 days, but then...It took me 1 page and I stopped again... The plot is quite catching but the story of the main characters already together (in a relationship) kinda of loses my interest coz the courting and stuff that excites you is not there. I'm sorry to say this, but the couple is boring...not one of them interest me at all.
If I ever run out of novels to read (which is impossible), I might give this another chance. Or, If someone pushed me to read this again..I might.
This was such a pleasant story, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't the type that I usually read. it kept me on the edge of my seat at times, made me smile and I actually shed a few tears also. It was just a really sweet and touching story. I reccomend it.... I give this book 10 stars not 5
I received an ARC of Sixty Days in exchange for an honest review.
Laylah has been in love with the same guy for as long as she can remember. Her brothers' best friend. Now…her father told her to stay away from him because he wasn't good news, and she deserved better. In her eyes though she just wanted him. The guy (Mickey) left for college. She grew up and while visiting with family he was there. Them seeing each other after so many years, well lets just say her feelings were still the same. Come to find out he had feelings for her. They end up dating. They end up living together….all while her family doesn't even know about it.
Now here's the kicker. They are about to celebrate the Puerto Rican Christmas, which last a total of sixty days. With her family not knowing about they are together, living together, let alone that she's not in California going to Business School…Yeah, this should be interesting.
How would you feel if you couldn't kiss, hug, or act normal around your family with the man you love? I wouldn't be able to do it, let alone for 60 days. You see this is kinda where I had issues. I myself would of just came out to my family. To hell with their opinion. If I was happy, what's the big deal!?
Her dad has his reasons for not liking Mickey, however a story isn't always as it seems. Mickey is a good guy, who truly loves Laylah. The two of them have been through some tough stuff during their relationship. What's 60 days right!?
Do the 60 days break them up? Or do they get through them and end up stronger? That's something you'll have to find out for yourself.
I couldn't connect with any of the characters, which is the main reason for my rating.
3.5 Stars I really enjoyed this book. No cheating, no crazy plot twists- just a beautiful story about family and what happens when you are around each other non stop for 60 days?
Mickey and Laylah are amazing- having found each other after six years apart. he is the bad boy best friend of her big brother and she is supposed to be at Business school. They are good for each other and end up showing more maturity and dedication than many couples twice their age. He’s not a bad boy and she is definitely not at B-school!
Together they work- now to get the rest of their family on board.
The message of this story was beautiful. That family and love are always enough. That forgiveness is necessary- but maybe not always forgetting. And that finding and being true to yourself is the only way to make your way in the world.
The portrayal of the relationships in this book is what is written best. You don’t always get along with your family, but they are your family. With trust and love anything can and will be accomplished.
Every so often I read a book that I get so engrossed in, I forget that I'm just reading a book. Throughout the whole time I was reading this, I truly felt like I was an invisible person just watching this all happen.
A big focus on this book is family and traditions. These are the things that revolve around these Sixty Days. I loved it so so much. It was so beautiful that it brought me to tears at certain points.
I loved Laylah and Mickey. It's like their love for each other just emanated and was contagious to everyone. Yes, they've had their ups and downs. But as you read this you truly believe love conquers all.
As I was introduced to the other characters, I felt like I had adopted another family. They're all crazy and loving and you automatically feel a part of their craziness.
The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was the fact that there was no translation whenever the characters spoke their native tongue. This review could be longer, but I think saying that I cried should be enough proof to say that I loved it.
