Living by his wits on the streets of a biologically mutated future America, young Arn is discovered to be the bastard son of the King of Kenesee and is transformed into a child king charged with leading his people in battle.
An excellently crafted blend of science fiction and fantasy. The plot is tight and epic, but doesn't detract from the well-drawn characters. I recommend it highly.
I picked this up at an old book sale. I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Old style fantasy based on an America (and a world I assume) totally devastated by violent earthquakes thousands of years before. The characters are well written, and the action moves along nicely.
I did not enjoy this book very much at all. I thought it was going to be more about magic and fantasy. Instead it was about a war and very little magic was involved. So I suppose technically this was a fantasy book, but there wasn't much fantastic stuff going on. The protagonist is not very interesting and there was not enough about how this used to be America but something awful happened and it isn't any more.
I didn't honestly expect much from this book. Picked it up at a used bookstore. And added it to my list to find just decent reviews. But shortly after starting it I ordered the rest of the trilogy. I loved every bit of this book. And am still crying from the ending. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the series goes.
