Haven City #3

Thief: Black Wolves

Rate this book
The universe is a bitch.

When Fisk, a cat shifter and thief, is sold into sex slavery, the most dangerous shifter gang in Haven City buys him: the Black Wolves. Problem is, Fisk stole from them three years before, and it cost the wolf gang precious territory. When they find out, they force Fisk to work off his debt. A debt to the tune of half a million dollars.

The universe has a plan.

Ian Black, the gang’s leader and alpha wolf, has plans for Fisk. It’s up to Breaker, the beta, to follow the boss’s orders. Breaker doesn’t expect to fall for the alluring feline with the bad attitude. He’s been nothing but loyal to his alpha and their pack his entire life. But Fisk wakes a desire Breaker's never known. Only Fisk strikes Ian’s fancy too, and a beta can’t cross an alpha.

The universe has a sick sense of humor.

Fisk finds himself torn between two very different men - Ian, the sexy alpha and Breaker, the stoic enforcer. One of the wolves is his mate, but Fisk isn’t sure how to handle it. Sex is one thing – love is something else.

As passion sizzles between the three men, Breaker feels the truth - Fisk is his mate. How can he choose between loyalty to his alpha and loyalty to his heart?

Contains graphic m/m love scenes.

Excellent with rich characters and a great plot. What is behind the Black Wolves is more than it seems. I liked the build and the action was def. tense. It felt natural to have your perception of the characters come from how others reacted and felt about them. Some good "show" here that didn't feel too slow or fast. It felt more natural. The way the beta acted seemed in character. It would have earned a 5 with a bit more world building of Haven and the interplay between shifters and other beings and humans - I wanted more and to know if this world looked, for all intents and purposes, like ours. I kept imaging a kind of burned out neighborhood. A "You want a war? I'll give you..a WAR!" and I think the reality probably was it looked just like our world does. I wanted more - I'm a little selfish that way!

But the most important thing: No Males Were Emasculated to Make This Story! We have no whiners, complainers, incessant crybabies, or endlessly expounding on feelings folk here - which I loved!

Yay! Guys acting like guys and shifters. From the food to the sense of smell when I say rich here I mean in sensory areas. I love taste, texture, and smell as a way to discover the story environment and this author did it very very well. My first go with Zoe Perdita and I already went out and bought 4 of her other books!

This wasn’t a book that I expected. The blurb is quite clear but I really thought it wouldn’t get to the point the story did. This lost me for romance. I really didn’t enjoy the whole sex three way thing. It wasn’t sexy or romantic or the like. It felt like a betrayal by Fisk and neither man later made any sort of deal out of it. I just can’t buy that there wouldn’t have been some fall out. I am trying to put it in “human” perspective but it still isn’t working for me.

The writing was good. The author made it dramatic and interesting. True I didn’t like the love triangle thing but the writing was well done. The characters draw you in and hold you. The thing with the writing was actually the relationships. Other than that the plot works. The descriptions are detailed and color the world well. I enjoyed that part of the book. The author does a good job with this world that was created.

As I have said relationships in the story weren’t done very well. I just didn’t feel that connection with the characters. The two that end up together, there just wasn’t that connection to fall in love. If I believe the mate thing is fate and they are supposed to know their mate then why did Fisk sleep with both men? If I believe that they don’t right away know their mate then how do they figure it out? Like humans do? Then I don’t see that they were together enough for love to develop.

Overall, I loved the regular plot of the book but the relationship aspect failed for me. So I will give it a medium rating. (Please keep in mind even if this is stated as the first in the Black Wolves series it is also third in the Haven City series. It helps with the world building to read the first two in the Haven City series.)

Well.
That was a surprise.

I was in the mood for a comfort confection and went over to ARe to see what I could find. Bought a JL Merrow and received this book as well as part of a random giveaway. This is the second time in two weeks that I've won a book over at ARe. My first book was underwhelming. I was expecting the same with this one. I'd never heard of this author but - hey, it's free, so I gave it a shot.

This was exactly what I was looking for. A curl up, don't-have-to-think-too-hard, sexy, entertaining read.
So that worked out really well for me.

The writing is competent, the characters are familiar types that don't feel stale, and the story was diverting.

And now I have a new author to look to when I want a comfort read.

Thief: Black Wolves

Oh my god! How much do I love this character? A lot. What a perfect vision of a cat shifter the author has created in Fisk. I absolutely love him, his humor, his personality, everything about him. His story fits perfectly in at this time in the books.

I'm hooked and can't stop reading these stories. The author sure as sucked me into this Haven City world.

Who will we meet next? I'm excited to find out!

Yikes, this book needs a warning...!

WARNING-MAJOR SPOILDER ALERTS ABOUND

This book is tricky, the author pulled what I consider to be a romance novel 'no-no'. It's hinted at in the blurb but since I don't recall seeing MMM warnings I thought it wouldn't happen.

BUT IT DID.

One of the MCs sleeps with someone who is not his love interest!! Repeatedly and willingly!!! This majorly put me off, and I fought not to 'DNF' this bitch. It made me uncomfortable to read about, especially when Fisk is 'messing around' as he calls it, and Breaker is invited to join in as an afterthought third. I almost threw my ereader away, I did NOT anticipate this! Breaker was hurt and struggled to deal with his emotions and feelings of disloyalty to his boss-who seems to me to be a major dick. I kept at it only to see if and how the author could untangle this, and she sort of did though I disliked the plot device immensely. I finished it and the MC coupling ends up intact but the 'mistake' that Fisk and the other MC engage in continues to crop up, even into the next book that Fisk's brother stars in. Ugh, the more I think about it the angrier I get. But I guess if I had known the info going in I might not have read it or at least not have been blindsided. 2.5 stars rounded up.

1.5 Stars

This was really disappointing because I enjoyed books one and two in this series. This story did not work for me. I didn't like Fisk. Ian irked me and wigged me out a little. And, although I wanted to like Breaker, his unrelenting passion and love for Fisk soured any warm and fuzzies I may have had. I LOATHED the love lust triangle, which was shoddily packaged at the end in a pathetic attempt to provide some sort of HEA. Not!

Bottom line: The universe is definitely a bitch. This book was not my bag.

According to my kindle I'm 56% done - but I don't think I will finish. The awkward love/sex triangle is just so ... uninteresting, unpleasant. I absolutely dislike Ian and not in a way that makes me want to keep readying (like Curran in Magic Rises - I was so pissed at him but still wanted to find out what happened).

The ending didn't rap up everything completely, so I hope the next book does.

I'd give this 3 stars. I thought it was mostly well paced, and although the premise was not my thing (being sold as a sex slave -- ugh), for me, the plot moved well and kept me engaged.

I didn't like Ian, and I thought Fisk was weaker at first, though he grew on me. The whole Still, the whole thing worked out well enough for me.

All in all, Breaker was my favorite here, though I felt like he was given the short stick All. The. Time. :/

The third book in the Haven City series took a new turn, focusing now on the Black Wolves, a notorious and dangerous shifter gang in the poorest area of Haven City.

The MC's are Fisk - a cat shifter who helped his twin, and got caught by the Russian Bears and sold to the leader of the Black Wolves.

The other MC is Breaker, enforcer of the Black Wolves and Fisk's mate. But they only got together after a lot of action, misunderstandings and a threesome.

I liked the two MC's but did not like that Ian (the leader of the Black Wolves) was having sex with Fisk for a while, even though he and Breaker was not together at that stage.

But it was cute enough, I liked Fisk and Breaker, so I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

New direction for this series

Fisk and Breaker are possibly two of the most obtuse shifter mates I’ve ever read about. Neither is willing to trust the other throughout the whole story and each assumes that he knows his mate’s feelings without ever trying to communicate.

Normally those would be things that I would list as cons in a story, but in this one, it just worked so perfectly.

This story takes the series in a completely different direction, but one that I really enjoy.

3 1/2 stars

Although is was a good book, I had to take away a star because I don't understand why they don't recognize their mates right off. The whole Ian thing with Fisk was just wrong. Breaker should have known it was his mate and under no circumstance would have aloud anyone to touch his mate..not even his Alpha. Ian should have respected that at the start.
Breaker is a sweet and loyal man/wolf that my heart just broke for him. Fisk is very clever and definitely what the Black Wolves need to clean up the streets along with his Brother Sebastian.

Good plot but I didn’t like this book

The storyline is interesting but I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters. I didn’t like Fisk right from the beginning, even before he was messing around with Ian. Ian was strange, Breaker was too weak and their relationship with Fisk was weird. Breaker and Fisk’s romance was just frustrating. It also didn’t make sense that the pack of three wolves were so feared by the other gangs. I forced myself to finish this book because the plot is good and I do want to continue with the series. I just didn’t like this book.

This book set me up to love it. Cat shifters, rival shifter gangs, thieves. And then they did the whole not-triangle and dubious consent thing and that left me with a lot of unpleasant feelings that very much colored my enjoyment of the book. I've talked myself around in circles about how to review this because, what happened holds up for a lot of wolf-shifter tropes. I just hate it?

A great addition to the series!! Fisk and Breaker has some tense and sexy moments but I didn't like that Fisk messed with Ian and Breaker, more Ian, while he was confused of what he was feeling for Breaker! Although there are hints of why Ian was attracted to Fisk that is explained in the next book with a certain twin!

I am torn - I gave this 4 stars due to plot and the potential for sequels. I did not, however, like the love triangle (okay sex triangle). Ian seems like a jerk but with good intentions. Am wondering if he and Seb are next?

I got the first book free and now I keep buying them. I think I'm addicted because the more books I read, the better they get. This is a series and it's better to read them in order but there are no cliffhangers, just good characters that have stories I want to read.
