You know what’s so great about this series?? It’s real. As readers work through this volume they realize that our main character isn’t going to be able to play as well as he used it and it’s realistic. He took so much time away that I wouldn’t have enjoyed this as much if he was able to enter the competition and play perfectly. He found his muse and when I say that scene of this volume was beautiful, I mean my eyes began to mist. I know that something tragic is going to happen and it’s going to break my heart. Another great volume! I can’t wait to dive into the next one.
"Every word that you've ever shared with me washes over me like starlight"
This is unlike anything else I've read; it's entirely centred on the music, and I'm not especially fond of classical music. However, learning about the world of Japanese music competitions is fascinating. It's great to see Kousei's progress.
Kaori hinted at her condition the first time here: "You know, I'm not going to be around to help you..."
I was loving this series four years ago when I got derailed because the library only had the first five volumes. Now they have the full series, and I have time to binge the ending. I decided to re-read this volume to get myself back up to speed, and I thought at one point in the middle of this book that I should have gone back to the start of the series, because while I was enjoying it, I felt a bit lost in all the flashbacks and disjointed storytelling. But by the end the earnest nature of the characters had won me back. Onward!
As much as it frustrates me I like that Arima isn't immediately good again and it's more gradual. We also get a lot more from his past in this volume. It's super repetitive, but it's necessary I guess. It'll be nice to see his growth.
”what about you? what were you carrying in your heart? what was holding you together?” “you were.”
OMGG THAT ONE WAS SO GOOD. i remember really liking that episode too so this was fun!! i like how kousei is actually starting to like and care about the piano instead of just playing to win and for his mom. ALSO. after kousei says all that stuff to kaori she throws out the charlie brown quote “you know, i’m not always going to be around to help you” LIKE???? we’re not doing this already.
”i am on a journey.” [..] “i journey to reach you.”
Arima's performance is heart warming, a shit show- but heart warming. Everything else is a bridge towards the rest of the series, so there isn't as much to say. It did have one of my favourite quotes:
Just one person matters to me. Can I reach you? Will it reach you? I Hope so.''
''One person is all I need. Will it reach you? I hope so.''
Around half the volume is dedicated to setting up for future volumes, which is fine, this one does not have as much excitement as the volume before this one. In the first half though: Kousei's performance was amazing, I loved how they portrayed what was going through his head. The first cracks are starting to show through-
"So that the people kind enough to listen will always remember me. So that I can live forever in their hearts."
Naoshi Arakawa's Your Lie in April is a finely crafted work that will draw a steady stream of emotion from the barren crust of a calcified heart. It is a tearjerker, but it's actually a well-balanced work of humor, drama, and romance. At its heart, this story is a tragedy and a love story as well. It is a love story about life; and the tears it brings, whether from joy, sorrow, or delight.
I recommend you read this story alongside the musical accompaniment it suggests in its notes. It will increase your enjoyment by tenfold.
These three volumes (3-5) continue the fascinating story of Kosei Arima, a teen whose promising future as a pianist abruptly came to a halt with the death of his mother and his inability to hear the notes he tries to play. His friend, Kaori, manages to convince the young man to accompany her during a violin competition, but this is no cure for Kosei's problem. As the story progresses, two rivals, Takeshi and Emi learn that Kosei has regained some of his old confidence and is entering another competition; they both vow to defeat him. With the day of the event drawing closer, the teen is haunted by his past, including ghostly memories of his demanding and abusive mother. Will all these pressures be too much for Kosei to overcome? Give this series a try and find out! -Louisa A.
This one was way better than the fourth volume. Kosei’s performance kept me on edge. Just to see how long the anticipation was, it took two and a half volumes to see what happens and how the crowd reacts. Anyways, I hope Kosei gets with kaori.
This is the volume that has the resolution to Kosei's return to the piano competition. The way it all turns out feels right, and I like that Kosei is able to see other competitors from the outside—the ways that they are emotionally invested in the competition, whether for good or ill. This whole series up to this point has been so insightful and wise.
The only thing that didn't feel right in this volume is that Hiroko Seto seems to come out of nowhere. I didn't know what the connection was, and it's still mostly a mystery. Interesting, though, to bring in a new character at this stage.
The conclusion of this volume makes it pretty clear that is going to be . Emotional manga . . .
I swear that was some massive foreshadowing at the end and I'm actually petrified at what may come. This series never ceases to amaze me with its simplicity and its feels.
The thing is I knew Kōsei won't be able to play like before but it still hurts to see how something he could be really good at was destroyed for him by this own mother.
