সখী রঙ্গমালা

দক্ষিণ সমতট অঞ্চলের দুই শ বছরেরও আগেকার এক কিংবদন্তির আখ্যানকে উপজীব্য করে রচিত হয়েছে উপন্যাস সখী রঙ্গমালা। নায়ক জমিদারনন্দন রাজচন্দ্র চৌধুরী। তার নারীপ্রীতির সুযোগ নিয়ে পিতৃব্য রাজেন্দ্র নারায়ণ নানা কৌশলে তাকে ঠকাচ্ছেন। এ অবস্থায় নীচু জাতের নরকন্যা সুন্দরী রঙ্গমালার প্রেমে পড়ে রাজচন্দ্র। উপন্যাসে ধূর্ত রাজেন্দ্র নারায়ণ, দাপুটে মা সুমিত্রা, পাখি-পোষা বউ ফুলেশ্বরী ও মোহময়ী রঙ্গমালাকে ঘিরে জমে উঠেছে প্রেম ও ক্ষমতার অভূতপূর্ব নাটক। এর মধ্যে ফুটে উঠেছে কতগুলো মানুষের কম্পমান মুখচ্ছবি, জঙ্গ-ফ্যাসাদে তছনছ এক জনপদ। দূর অতীতের রূপ-গন্ধ-বর্ণচ্ছটায় উদ্ভাসিত সখী রঙ্গমালায় ধরা পড়েছে যেন এ সময়েরই ছবি।

About the author

Shaheen Akhtar is the author of six short story collections and four novels. She has also edited the three-volume Soti O Swotontora: Bangla Shahitye Nari, about the portrayal of women in Bengali literature, and Women in Concert: An Anthology of Bengali Muslim Women's Writings 1904-1938.

Akhtar's second novel Talaash won the Best Book of the Year Award for 2004 from Prothom Alo, the largest-circulation daily newspaper in Bangladesh. The English translation of the novel was published by Zubaan Books, Delhi, India in 2011.

একজন মানুষ, আর তাকে ঘিরে বয়ে চলা কয়েকটি মানুষের জীবন। রংগমালা এমনই এক অস্থির সময়ের আলেখ্য। প্রেম, কাম আর হতাশার এক বিরহকাহিনি৷ সাথে আছে পারিবারিক কলহ আর সপ্তদশ শতাব্দীর পটপরিবর্তনের ক্রান্তিকাল। তারপরেও সব ছাড়িয়ে দীপ্যমান হয়ে থাকে রংগমালার কাহিনি, আর পালাকবিদের মুখে মুখে অমর হয়ে থাকে সেই গাথা।
নোয়াখালী অঞ্চলের প্রচলিত এক পালাগানের ওপরে ভিত্তি করে রচিত এই উপন্যাসের পাতায় পাতায় লেখক জীবন্ত করে তুলেছেন সেই সময়টিকে। আরো আছে আঞ্চলিক ভাষার সংলাপ, যা আমাদেরকে টেনে নিয়ে যায় গল্পেত গভীরে। তাই রাজচন্দ্র, ফুলেশ্বরী, রংগমালা, হীরাদাসী প্রত্যেকেই মনে দাগ কেটে যায় গল্প শেষ হবার পরেও।

I read the translation in English by Shabnam Nadiya published by Bengal Lights. The beginning is explosive and gripping, starting off with the beheading of Rongomola. The book is based on a Bangladeshi folk ballad, 'pala gaan'. It is busy with a variety of women characters, with their emotional stories of what brought their lives to their present roles. Set during British India times, there is a taste of the unfortunate motives of estate owners as they compete for power through acquiring wealth. Each woman in the book has a fascinating profile, personality and strength, despite their being hidden from public view. Their common connection is a prince regent who is oblivious to others feelings as he is besotted with Rongomola. The tale is dramatic. Yet I give it three stars as it is challenging read, with back stories of the multiple characters interrupting the timeline of the story. I hope the story is dramatised in a theater play.

I really don't know, the book doesn't give that feel of a story. It feels like I am reading a translated script, word for word everything feels like forcefully translated. Also, sometimes some words are too hard to predict and need to check the dictionary.

It ruins the flow of the reader. So I strongly recommend to read the original version not the translated one.

The book is a little bit monotonous but the plots are not so bad, also you can get a view of rural bengal.
