Seven Royal Guard, a Beast, a kingdom in chaos, and a girl as pure as the driven snow...Will they find their Happily Ever After?
If you're in the mood for a one-of-a-kind read that is something between a mix of a fairy tale, parody and romance, then Rachel Van Dyken's latest release, When Ash Falls, may just be what you're looking for. In a style, somewhat reminiscent of the hit TV show, Once Upon a Time, Ms. Van Dyken gives us her romantic and satirical retelling of the classic fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I can guarantee you that after reading this story, you will never think of the fairy tale in quite the same way ever again!
After having falling in love with the wrong woman, Ashton Wolfsbane, Earl of Gyles, has taken a vow of celibacy. Many years ago, he fell in love with his brother's wife, only to see her tragically die in an accident. An event for which he still blames himself. Her death nearly killed him--literally as he was so guilt ridden that he tried to take his own life. Following this tragedy, however, he determined to deny himself any female pleasures and instead devoted himself to carrying out justice for others, particularly death sentences for the evil, for which he becomes knows as The Grimm Reaper.
Then his brother, the Duke of Wolfsbane, sends him on a mission that tests his vows. The beautiful and pure Princess Sofia is fleeing a desperate situation at the hands of her evil step-mother. Her only salvation lies in finding a suitable husband to rescue her. Ash is charged with escorting the Princess throughout London in her quest of finding the perfect match.
But Princess Sofia has her own companionship terms in mind. And she makes it nearly impossible for Ash to resist her. Moreover, the closer they get, the more their attraction becomes undeniable, and when Princess Sofia asks Ash for the one thing he has vowed never to give, Ash will find his ability to resist temptation greatly tested. For where passion lies, love is sure to follow. But can there possibly be a HEA in store for this unlikely duo or does love only exist in fairy tales?
What a retelling! This unique regency romance is sure to bring some laughs, while warming your heart.

Well folks, it finally happened. I read my first regency romance. I have always been hesitant for some reason but I am so glad that I took the proverbial leap of faith. Anything by Rachel Van Dyken has been something to rave about, in my opinion, and it was the perfect author and book to break into a new genre for me. I will confess that I went and one clicked the rest of the London Fairy Tales series when I finished.
When Ash Falls is a regency retelling of the fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. When we meet Ash for the first time, we see that his heart has been broken and his life has spiraled out of hope due to the loss of the one person he loved above all else. Years after this tragedy, he is trying to put it all behind him and has become a well-known assassin and guard, focusing solely on his task as penance for what happened that fateful day. It is because of his renown that he is summoned to locate and escort the Russian princess, Sofia, safely to her cousin in London. Sofia is running from her evil step-mother and ex-fiancé in Russia, who both her plan to destroy her. She is escorted by the most ridiculous but sweet and well-meaning group of men, who have pledged life to protect her at all costs. When Ash finds the princess and her guard, he is taken back by Sophia’s snark, beauty and wit, a formidable woman that has the power to break the strong assassin. After arriving to London, Ash is tasked with protecting Sophia until she finds a titled husband; someone to marry that will offer the protection she needs from her past and allow her to step into her role as ruler in the future. Yet despite her fate, their attraction cannot be denied and they grow close. Sophia is able to break down Ash’s thick and scarred walls, allowing for a growing attraction between the two lost souls. Sophia longs to find love and passion yet with the time constraints and fear for her life, she will be forced to find someone convenient and titled to marry. It is this predicament and her fear that hatches a plan in her mind, to experience a few weeks of passion with Ash that will hopefully be enough to last her for the rest of her lives. But where there is a burning passion, there is also a flame that will burn away everything else until the only thing that can exist is the two lovers wanting more than they believe they can ever have.
This was a great story with a fun story line. The factor that pushed it over the top was the incredibly written characters, something Rachel Van Dyken excels at. Ash is such a moody man, granted he has endured loss and pain, but his self-imposed punishment is his choice alone. He has a dark streak in his soul and he refuses to allow his heart and body to heal, planning for his life’s destruction to be his penance for the past. At times it was aggravating to see his self-imposed anguish, yet when we truly understand who Ash is, it seems to make sense. He is a man of conviction and passion. When he allows his heart to feel again, whether or not he planned it that way, he becomes a fierce protector, wanting to give Sophia everything she desires and deny himself to protect her at all costs. Sophia was a feisty and naïve princess, yet she had learned of the world’s cruelty in such horrible ways. She is a fighter, both for her country, her life, and those she loves. All she desired was to give love and be loved in return. Her beauty and passion is the key to unlocking Ash’s self-imposed prison and bring life to his dead heart again.
The secondary characters bring a healthy dose of humor in a sad situation. Peirce and Hunter are forever goading Ash, hoping to bring a burst of life into his eyes. Their antics made me laugh and roll my eyes. The Royal Guard that accompanied Sophia from Russia is hilarious. The depiction of the dwarves from the old fairy caused me to laugh out loud. I loved their adoration of Sophia and their personalities always made for many funny moments in the story!
The passion and tension between Sophia and Ash is powerful and beautifully written. Their emotions are well developed, causing the reader to hope for their love to win, but understanding the challenges that they will face. Watching Sophia fight for what she wants is wonderful. Seeing Ash’s heart beat again for love was moving and sweet. It was a beautifully explored affair that allowed for hope and love to overcome every obstacle. I was smiling like an idiot when they flirted and could not wait for them to finally be together!
If you are looking for a regency romance to keep you warm this winter, then look no further. The passion between Ash and Sophia is fire! The humor keeps you smiling and the story will warm your heart! Rachel Van Dyken never ceases to amaze me! Don’t miss this book.
When Ash Falls is the first Historical Romance that I've read and I had no idea what to expect. One thing I did know for sure is that Rachel Van Dyken doesn't disappoint. This story had it all: humor, romance, a broody swoon worthy male character and a great female lead who wasn't afraid to speak her mind or go after what she wanted.
What first attracted me to this story was that it said it was a regency re-telling of Snow White. While the general idea of the story was similar, it was in now way the same Snow White. I loved getting lost in Rachel Van Dyken's writing and in the past.
Overall, I found this book to be really enjoyable. It was a refreshing break from the books that I normally read and I'm looking forward to going back and reading the other books from this series.
*An ARC copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review*
When I see a new release by Rachel Van Dyken I can't wait to dive in. Her romances, whether it be New Adult, Contemporary or a sweet regency romance like When Ash Falls always bring a smile to my face and a flutter in my heart.
This is the long overdue 4th instalment in the London Fairy Tales, a great quick read that is sure to make you swoon and laugh out loud. While this is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone. Just know that if you're a true romance fan you will quickly one click the entire series. A fun and sweet twist to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I have no doubt that Sofia and Ash will become a favorite storybook couple.
"Sometimes we hide from the world because we are afraid of what it will reveal to us if we were to truly open our eyes and accept its honesty. I'd rather live in ignorance than face the ugly truth of my existence."
Ash is struggling to hold on to what he knows. Sadly what he knows is grief. Which has made him angry and bitter. Ash is a sexy brooding alpha we all love to fall for, and Sofia is no exception. They have an instant connection that had me laughing and swooning.
"The carriage ride was too short, just like Ash's grasp on reality, for he desperately wanted to live in a fairytale world where he could kidnap the princess and live happily ever after"
Don't think that because you're familiar with the common telling of Snow White that you know what will happen, because you don't. This was definitely an original and fresh take on a story we all know and love. One that I would recommend to any romance lover.
Out of all the characters in this series it was Ash that took home the prize of my heart I fell in love with him instantly, "Ash sighed. "I must be allowed to shoot something." If he didn't, the constraint might drive him mad. He'd been sitting in the same blasted carriage for days now. Who knew it took so long to escape Scotland?" Ash's personality, I don't know how to describe it but I just loved it, "bloody hell, I must give every person the impression I have no self-control," Ash muttered, while, from somewhere behind him, Pierce laughed." The chemistry between him and Sofia is off the charts, there's witty comebacks and dialogue between them, "the signal I'm thinking is most improper," Ash narrowed his gaze. "And would most likely get you kicked out of the ball. Care to see it?" Only Ash would use his injuries to his advantage, actually all the men in this series would, "yes." Ash nodded emphatically. "In fact, if you just rub your hands across my naked skin, I would feel so much better." Her eyes narrowed. "Common war practice." He coughed. "Do you feel that chill? Better shrug out of your gown and lie down next to me. We don't want me catching a chill and dying." I'm actually sad to see this series end I loved the re-telling of the fairytales from Rachel's mind, she has such a great imagination.
When Ash Falls is a romantic and elegant retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves that will keep you captivated until the last page. Rachel Van Dyken creates a story that gives you characters that wrap themselves around your heart and leave you with magical romantic feelings only great fairy tales leave you with. Even with a dark and brooding hero he grows and makes you fall in love with his journey.
I love all of Rachel's books and this one is no different. It was everything I could have ever wanted in a fairy tale retelling in the Regency era. Her writing is flawless. You can't help but be sucked into her story and fall in love with the characters.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Well first of all I have never read Historical before. So this was my first time and I was little scared I wasn't going to enjoy it. But Rachel assured me that I would & let me tell you how right she was!!!
It wasn't boring, it was very enjoyable and I enjoyed the way it was written and the humor in it. Took me a while to get used to how people spoke back then but after a few chapters I was fine.
I have always loved all of Rachel's books that I have read in the past and feel like she can do no wrong in whatever she writes. And this just cemented it for me.
Rachel your books are AMAZING and to me this prove that you are an amazing author. Keep up the fantastic work. Can't wait to read what you write next.
Ash is heartbreaking because he punished himself for 10 years and he feels like he doesn't deserve real love! Sofia is so sweet and perfect for Ash! I love this twist on the fairy tale of Snow White. Sofia is able to help Ash find his way back to happiness and to find something to live for and learn what real love is. Read this series of London Fairy Tales in a Regency setting! Rachel"s gift of telling a story is amazing! She is one of my favorite author's! You will not regret picking this book up!
I love Rachel's historical books. She does such an amazing job. This book is crazy good. love and happiness may seem like something he can't have, but I love reading the journey that Ash takes to find out he is worth more than he thinks.
Always one for a good HEA story. Snow White was a story growing up that I related to. Well, okay not exactly but close. Ms. Van Dyken finishes her Fairytales series with When Ash Falls. She gives us a different telling of an old fairytale with a new twist; just as she did with her other stories in this series.
Ashton Wolfbane for the past ten years has been known as the Grimm Reaper. He was in love with his brother’s wife having watched her die, he decided to give up sex. What better way to not think about so called things is to become a hit man…devoted to justice and death for those wrong/evil doers? For a change of pace he is asked to tote Princess Sophia around (Snow in this story) who is escaping the clutches of her evil step-mom. She is need of a rich Lord with connections.
Ms. Van Dyken threw two people together that you just knew weren’t right for each other making them see that they really worked. She makes Sophia someone who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. A big difference from the Snow we know and love. I loved the way Ms. Van Dyken shows that a pretty face can weaken even the strongest of men. Temptation…
The characters were very likable as you felt their plight. It was easy to relate to them in a modern sense even if it were in a regency setting. I love the effortless way in which Ms. Van Dyken brings dialogue to life. She makes it easy to become involved.
It was still a very well written fun filled story of Snow…oops…Ash and Sophia.
This story held me captive with the fun, suspense and promise of a HEA. It was a story filled with hope. You might want to grab your favorite beverage and settle in because you may find you become relaxed not wanting to do anything until you finish the story.
Fun book ALTHOUGH there was that one tiny detail that drove me insane! Ash and Hunter were IDENTICAL twins. No one could tell them apart except Hunter had golden eyes and Ash had green eyes! WRONG! That very fact kept them from being identical. This drove my OCD up the wall. Hunters' wife could not tell them apart and ran to Ash thinking he was Hunter. She ran into the street and was struck by a carriage and died. Ash who loved his sister-in-law felt extremely guilty over the mistake and left London to become a assassin. Hunter continued to work for the Crown as a spy. Ash was assigned to escort a Russian princess who was about to be assassinated by her stepmother and her betrothed to her cousin the famed Beast to London. The Beast was to provide protection until she could be married to a titled English gentleman and she would inherit her Russian property and titles. Ash merely had to keep her safe and alive for three weeks. Oh yeah and not fall in love with her and ruin her.
Enjoyed reading the new series and different twist of fairy tales. I like how all the main characters in all of the books are some how related. This one Ash is finds a way to heal his heart of something that was not his fault and finds love. The guards in the books are funny "dwarfs" they all made me laugh whenever they showed up.
Would have given this 5 stars except for the serious grammatical errors. It was a good story. The ripper and the princess were really meant to be together.
I really enjoyed this book. It was way better than the two previous ones. It was funny and cute how Ash and Sofia kept teasing and bantering with each other. Also, the teasing between Ash, Pierce and, later on, Hunter was just hilarious. It was a cute story with a cute ending.
This was a fun light read, part regency romance, part fairy tale and part parody. There wasn't a lot of meat on the bone here but I was in the mood for something short and fun to read.
I think this may be my overall favourite book of the series. I love that these fairy tale retellings could have been real. They are delectably hot! The twins stories were my favourties. Their characters were so tragic it was wonderful to see them get a happy ending! I only wish this series had many more books to come, but alas, I don't believe it was meant to be. Definitely recommend these books! Loved them all!
oh god it was exceptionally truly hilarious!gotta change my rating of all books in the series..it was by far the best,my most favourite book in the series..best ever snow white re-telling!!
I'm a huge fan of romance, historical romance that is, plus a fairytale to boot made this perfect bed time reading late into the night. Well paced, great characters filled with lots of fun and drama.
I have just started reading this author and have read all in this series, When Ash Falls being last in series. I never wanted the book to end. It's truly a must read.
Regency. Can I just take a moment to sigh? For real. It's a glorious thing to go back in time through historical romance. There are so many things about it to love and the way Rachel Van Dyken writes Regency is truly lovely. Like most women, I just adore a good fairy tale. The strong, brave beautiful and innocent women paired up with the even more strong, brave and beautiful men (who might not be so innocent). Not to mention the gowns, the proper names, the dancing, I could go on and on. So the London Fairy Tales series has been just a true treasure that I hated to see end.
In When Ash Falls we see a re-telling of Snow White - who didn't just fall hard for Snow White and her seven peculiar protectors? The way Rachel navigates through the story, blending her original humor along with romance, elegance and magical elements, is incredible. I will never look at Snow White the same way! 'Ash's eyes narrowed. "What are you about?" "It's simple, really..." Sofia played with the necklace around her delicate neck. "I want you to seduce me." Ash damn-near swallowed his tongue. "Come again?" Ok, so maybe in this telling the princess wasn't quite so innocent. Sofia intrigued me so much - she wanted so badly to find passion and love, not just a man to marry. She was compassionate and tender hearted. She was strong-willed and knew what she wanted and went for it. And she wanted Ash. Speaking of Ash, well, brooder comes to mind but he was so much more than that. He, too, was compassionate, even if his profession would not elude to that, but he was hard core and incredibly hard on himself. Ash has suffered greatly and will not allow himself to step out of the guilt. I wanted to wrap him up and give him a hug, if I didn't fear he has a knife on his person. The two together were just too much! They knew exactly how to push each other's buttons and did it often. Throughout the book, Ash and Sofia find themselves in ***cough*** brow raising circumstances & teaching scenarios that left me fanning myself and flipping the pages on my kindle as fast as possible.
When Ash Falls left me smiling, giggling, and sighing. I absolutely loved it. Sometimes I need a little regency romance in my life and this one made me happy to be a fan.
And finally, I loved getting a glimpse at our favorite characters from the previous London Fairy Tales. Hunter & Ash's relationship is hilarious but full of love, Dominique & Isabelle are gloriously in love and protective of his cousin, Sofia. It was a fabulous conclusion to this series, which, again, I'm sad to see go. And while I know Rachel rocks in the NA and Contemporary genres, I hope that she might have one or two more Historicals up her little sleeve somewhere along the road.
Thanks, Rachel, for allowing me to read early for an honest review!
I love historical romance and I love Rachel Van Dyken, so what's better than a historical romance written by her? Nothing! She does something no other historical romance writers do, she breathes today into history. While I was reading When Ash Falls, I just kept picturing modern day Rachel characters in history. The humor, the banter, the relationships; her writing is timeless. I love Ash. He's broody, sexy and sarcastic; some of my favorite characteristics! He's taken a vow of celibacy but when he sets his eyes on Sofia, the stunning, stubborn princess, he can't stop thinking about her. They bicker and fight and can't seem to stand each other but the attraction is so strong that Sofia asks Ash to show her passion. Real passion. At first he resists, but he can't seem to escape his feelings for her. Will he be able to walk away after their time together is over? Can Sofia protect her heart? This is such a great story! I laughed, cried and laughed some more. Don't miss this final book in the London Fairy Takes series.
Ash sighed. "I must be allowed to shoot something." "Shoot a tree." "A tree? Be quick about reminding me why I brought you on this mission again." Pierce shrugged. "Because you need someone who has the social skills of a gentleman." "And what do I have?" "That of an ass," Pierce said happily.
Ash's eyes widened. "What I meant...that is, I mean...Blasted son of a bloody wh-" "Help?" Sofia interrupted him. "I promise it won't take long." "Ah, right, music to every gentleman's ears when he sees a half-naked woman lying on a bed."
"And you consider yourself an adequate judge of passion?" "I guess you'll have to be the judge of that," he whispered. "I haven't even given you a taste. The scientist in me wonders...what will happen when you have a small bite?" "There's only one way to discover the answer to that question." Sofia answered. He pulled her across the carriage and into his lap. "Straddle me."
When Ash Falls is probably one of the sweetest and shortest historical romance that I have ever read.
When I’ve read the prologue, I actually have doubts if this will turn to be a complicated, dark, heavy romance. What happened to Ash during that part is so heartbreaking. Though, I am really in awe for he made it seem simple to be celibate after 10 years! He is a man who doesn’t easily give his heart but when he does, he will love that person with all his heart until she dies!
Sofia is a breathe of fresh air to Ash’s world. She is a fighter and does not take things for granted. It easy for her to give her heart even after everything that has happened or happening.
Along with these two, I’ve actually became interested with the Beast, Hunter, Pierce and the 7 Royal Guards. They bring life and much joy in the story when it comes to the banters and silly fights.
Now, I’m still undecided if the story being short is a good thing or a bad thing.
A good thing because it is straight to the point and without too much drama involved.
A bad thing because I want more — fight scenes, love scenes, silly banters especially with the “details” for I think, that is the foundation of historical romances.
I enjoyed the story and now, I’m going to read the rest of the series starting with the Beast! :D
To Rachel, thank you so much for creating this story! I felt how much love you creating this world. And yes, you gave justice to historical romance! *I just love the author’s note* Anyway, will you be writing a story about Pierce??
To Danielle of InkSlinger PR, thank you so much for the opportunity to read this!! Blog: http://bujoijoi22.com
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Review originally appeared on Books That Hook
WHEN ASH FALLS is an interesting tale about an assassin who falls for a princess he is assigned to protect. It starts out at a good pace and grabs your attention with Ash’s attempted suicide. From there, it proceeds with humor and sexual tension, which nicely contrasts the sad beginning. I enjoyed the diary entries from Ash at the start of each chapter. I’ll admit I became bored with the story. It seemed to be mostly talking and thinking for a long time. Then, Sofia propositions Ash. The story became interesting to me again. I don’t believe my temporary loss of interest is a reflection of the writing. I think it just boils down to personal taste. I normally read books with lots of danger and action, so this was a big change for me. If I normally read books like this, I might not have lost interest when I did. I liked the parallels between the fairy tale of Snow White and Sofia’s situation. She doesn’t have dwarves; she has silly guards. One thing I really liked about this book was that a reader can jump right into the series, like I did, without being confused. Even though this is book four, anyone could read WHEN ASH FALLS. Because the series is called London Fairy Tales, I was expecting more fantasy elements in the story. Despite this, the story is good because it seems the author has translated the fairy tale into something more realistic. Since it was well-written and any criticism I have stems from personal preferences only, I feel it would be unfair to take off any stars. If you are someone who likes historical romance without the fantasy aspects, I suggest reading WHEN ASH FALLS.
Ash was tormented by the death of the woman he loved, the woman who happened to be his twin’s wife. So tormented, that he immediately tries to end his life, but fails. He vows himself to celibacy. He has been successful for the past ten years…until he meets Sofia. He has been hired to protect her and is not happy when he needs to accompany her the next four weeks until she is married…to someone with a title. Sofia doesn’t know it but Ash has a title but has ignored it for years.
Hunter grinned knowingly. “She needs an English title husband, Lord Gyles.”
…”Lord Gyles is dead,” Ash whispered.
There is a real connection between the two and an instant attraction and when Sofia asks him to give up his vow and give her three weeks of passion he refuses…but she pushes…
“I’m a Russian princess. I want passion. If you won’t show me…then I’ll find someone that will.”
Ash does not like the sound of that but will he give into her?
This story has a good build on characters. Sofia knows what he wants and goes after it with Ash. He is immediately drawn to Sofia but has demons of his own to battle. Will they have a happily ever after? This story has the makings of a beautiful fairytale but will they have it? We have a mix of the wicked stepmother, 7 guards (dwarves), and the Princess and her “Prince” (or Earl in this case).
When Ash Falls is the first regency novel that I’ve read of Rachel Van Dyken. I haven’t read regency or historical novels in years but after reading 2 in the last week, I am going to start mixing more into my reading schedule.
If you love Rachel Van Dyken but haven’t read her regency novels, I recommend them. I find regency/historical novels to be my cozy reads and this did not disappoint.
Ash, Lord Grimm, has been running for nearly 10 years, working as an assassin, hiding from his past. A past that included loving his brother's wife from afar, watching her die in his brother's arms, and escaping the guilt he felt about the circumstances of her death.
He may be my favorite of the London Fairytale men. From his backstory to the way he behaves around Sofia, he was the perfect combination of recluse and rake.
Sofia is running for her life. Fear of her step-mother’s wrath keeps her hiding until her cousin Dominique sends Ash to escort her to London and he can find her a husband.
The Royal Guard charged with protecting Sofia is laughable in their ineptitude, but their loyalty is proven and entirely behind their princess. As this is a loose retelling of Snow White, the Guard play the role of the dwarves who protect the original Snow.
The London Fairytales are something all their own. A regency historical novel, based in favorite fairy tale lore, they are each fun retellings in a rich period and setting. Are they perfect in their historical accuracy? No. But they are some of the most entertaining bits of period storytelling I’ve read in some time.
When Ash Falls is everything I was hoping for from the last London Fairy Tale. Ash is my favorite of Rachel's fairy tale men. This story particularly had everything I was hoping for -- a damaged rake, a heroine with backbone, and a cast of characters that fit the fairy tale bill while promising lots of laughs.

I love Rachel Van Dyken and her London Fairy Tales Series, so I was extremely happy when I got my hands on this book. I’ve been waiting for Ash’s story for a while and this book was everything I expected and more.
The story is captivating and intriguing. It hooked me up from the first few words and it kept me turning page after page until I read the last word. The pages are full of heartbreak, nicely balanced with fun, romance and love.
Sofia and Ashton are two amazing characters that will make you fall in love with them and root for their HEA. Ash is a strong willed, slightly dominant, extremely hot tortured soul with captivating gaze. The scars from his past run deep and he doesn’t believe that he deserves to be happy and in love. His torture is even bigger once he saves Princess Sofia as she represents everything he ever dreamed about. Sofia on the other hand is a strong willed and opinionated woman running for her life. She seeks a protector and a man who will love her. And who better for the job than the deliciously sexy rogue who lights her blood on fire. The interactions between the couple run from fun to burn the sheets hot, from frustrating to romantic and all that is spiced up with a little bit of danger :)
As a whole, I loved the book and will recommend it to everyone who loves regency romance :) It is a great read to curl up with during the cold winter nights. And if you haven’t read the previous books in this amazing series by Rachel Van Dyken, you definitely have to check them out ;)
