Read this for my work manga book club. A fun, intriguing introduction to a new series that I couldn’t put down, and I read in one sitting. My friend described it as “Akira with plants,” and that’s pretty fitting, but don’t let that pithy description make you think you’ve got the full story; it gives you just enough to keep the story going while keeping you guessing about what’s to come next, and I can’t wait to read volume 2

Wow, what a manga! A girl named Riko gets mixed up with a young boy named Eito when she saves him from getting flattened by a truck. Since this incident, she treats him to a meal, but things get dicey really quick when some guys in armor and guns show up. Without a care to witnesses, they aim to kill Eito. When it is revealed he has a strange ability to manipulate his arms into vines, it is evident that this is why he is being hunted down, and Riko's own life is at risk if she stays around much longer.
Meanwhile, at the facility of which Eito is from, another A-DO (the experimental people from the facility who have various powers) is sent to find the escaped Eito since they can sense each other when their powers are in use.
This manga is fast-paced, action-packed, and has a flavorful classic manga feel to it, with a dystopian futuristic twist with some of its technological elements. A great manga for a contemporary audience that any teen reader would certainly enjoy.

Als ich diesen Manga aufschlug, wollte ich eigentlich erstmal nur reinlesen und dann konnte ich einfach nicht mehr aufhören.
Band 1 war extrem bildgewaltig und die Panels mit vielen Hintergründen versehen. Die Charaktere sind alle sehr unterschiedlich und teilweise etwas unsauber gezeichnet. Allerdings mag ich solche Stile zwischendurch ganz gern.
Beim Lesen hatte ich teilweise eine extreme Gänsehaut, weil die Emotionen hervorragend transportiert wurden.
Zudem sind die Charaktere nicht nur interessant, sondern bereits greifbar und mir einer gewisse Tiefe ausgestattet.
Inhaltlich wird das ein oder andere Thema angeschnitten und einiges davon ist auch unser Alltag. Dennoch spielt Adou in der Zukunft.
Main Topic ist jedoch die Flucht eines besonderen Jungen aus einem Forschungslabor.
Teilweise ist es brutal und möglicherweise nichts für schwache Nerven.
Alles in allem, bin ich wirklich begeistert von diesem Auftakt und schon gespannt, wie es weitergeht.

People aren't always what they seem. Riko is confrontational and headstrong, but she is caring and loyal. She is trying to live her best life and make her way through a world that is very anti-immigration. Eito is a young mute boy who is overwhelmed by his surroundings and can't stay out of trouble. Or is he?
I loved this volume. The story is so interesting. The art is nice. I wouldn't say that it's the best art that I've seen. But the story is so good that I don't even care. I will be reading the next volume.

I loved this story. Besides being a great dark adventure, there are mysteries about who people really are and what it means to be a hero and care for others. I was invested in the story and worried about what would happen next, when it said "to be continued." I don't even mind because I feel like the entire manga was jam-packed full of action. I can't wait to read the further adventures. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

What a great opening! The idea isn't new, but I really like the execution so far, and the first volume already introduces us to a bunch of interesting characters. Riko and Eight need to be protected at all cost! Huge fan of the art style too. Definitely has a retro feel to it (80s-90s), which I love. 4.5/5

Un manga que te hace sentir intriga y se sigue de forma muy ligera. Con giros narrativos que no esperas que sucedan y te cambian la historia de un momento a otro.

I don’t know why, but while I was reading A-DO 1, I felt like this story I should have read/heard about ages ago (like when I first got into manga). Either it just has that vibe, or this is a new translation of a classic. I could see it going either way.
Maybe it’s because it has such strong Akira vibes? I’ve seen it described as “Akira with plants,” and I’ve got to say - that’s spot on. So, if you’re debating about reading A-DO 1, consider that comparison.
Overall, this is a fun story with high stakes, high action, and a fast pace. I would have liked more character development or even a dash more world-building before we were thrown into the deep end, but since I could keep up, it obviously works.
I loved the artwork and the overall style of A-DO 1. It’s worth a read, even if you’re not sure you’ll complete the series.

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Manga Adou tom 1 zabiera nas do futurystycznej Japonii, która przestała być homogenicznym państwem. Przyczyniło się to do rozwoju kraju, ale też poważnych konfliktów na tle rasowym, które stały się codziennością. W takich właśnie realiach stara się jakoś funkcjonować 19-letnia Riko Saeki. Jej życie diametralnie się zmienia kiedy jej los przecina się z małomównym chłopcem, któremu chce pomóc. Postacią tą jest tajemniczy Eight, który jak się okazuje jest owocem tajemniczego eksperymentu rządowego i na pewno nie jest on tak bezbronny, na jakiego wygląda.
To właśnie z jego perspektywy oglądamy dalszą historię, w której nie brakuje widowiskowości i brutalności. Młody bohater jest bowiem celem owej agencji, która nie chce dopuścić, aby świat dowiedział się o ich działaniach.
Manga stawia przede wszystkim na dynamiczną akcję, co sprawia, że czyta się ją błyskawicznie. Pierwsze dwa tomy niemal nie zwalniają tempa, co może być zarówno zaletą, jak i wadą. Z jednej strony, adrenalina i nieustanne zagrożenie trzymają w napięciu, ale z drugiej strony, czasem brakuje miejsca na pewną refleksję.

Saw this on Netgalley and I’m always looking to bring more manga into my life so I snapped it up. I’m glad I did because this was absolutely fantastic. Eito is a compelling character. You get his story and backstory all throughout the book (I love how this used flashbacks to flesh out his character). I want to know more about him and see how he develops. Riko is his self appointed protector and you don’t learn much about her in this volume but I hope to learn more in the future. Same with the organization behind whatever is going on with Eito. Right now it’s just the shadowy evil organization of the week but I hope it gets more fleshed out.
I really like the art style in this. Each persons abilities is well drawn and the fight scenes managed to not be too confusing visually.
Overall I highly recommend this for sci-fi/horror fans. If you liked Elfen Lied I can see you liking this. May be too intense for younger readers (blood and gore are included but briefly).

This is the coolest manga I’ve read all year. It’s definitely going in my top reads for 2024.
This is just dope.
We’ve got a sci-fi, near future Japan. Because of a wave of immigration into the country, there’s a lot of social and political upheaval. Lots of people are struggling and the government is in crackdown mode.
Enter Riko.
A young woman who escaped a bad home situation who is just trying to scrape a life together. When she comes across a little boy who seems lost, she can’t help but try to help him. But, Eito isn’t exactly what or who he seems.
He’s got some mysterious powers and a whole lot of heavily-armed, military personnel looking to take him back—dead or alive.
INCREDIBLE on every level. Reading this manga felt like watching a movie. From the storytelling to the characters to the atmosphere and art style, this is such a good read.
If you enjoy an immersive and atmospheric, low-fi, sci-fi story with some action and drama, I think you’d really enjoy this series.

An action-oriented scifi adventure with Stranger Things vibes. This manga features Eito who during first appearances doesn't seem to speak and is a quiet boy until he's almost hit by a truck and the hardscrabble Riko, who's scootering by rips him a new one. But she takes a liking to this little boy and would feel bad if she abandoned him so she tries to get him something to eat which leads to a fantastical scene in which he's being targeted for assassination at the restaurant but upon being fired at, his powers, kept under wraps so far, unleash which include his tentacle-like plant arms. He's a tough kid to kill. Riko and Eito bolt and a slow unfurling (of still not too much information since this will be a series) begins in which Eito was a part of experiments done on other kids until he escaped his neck cuff and is on the run.

A-DO is sort of your bog standard "kid was experimented on, kid gets out of experimentation facility, government (?) paramilitary officials try to get him back" story, even including other kids with the same situation and a girl guardian on the outside that may or may not have gotten fridged. It was okay, I liked the retro sort of Akira-esque art and it could have had something interesting or important to say about immigration into the workforce that it kind of touched upon but mostly left alone (who knows if later volumes will expand?) but mixing that in with kid experiments and all was a lot of info with not too much payoff. But as an action manga it was fine.

The blurb says its for fans of Akira, and I could definitely see that. There is a lot of violence, and child abuse, and dark themes in general. There are morally questionable government figures, scientists, and adults.
Eito is a peace loving child on the run from a pretty terrible situation. Riko is dealing with her own bad situation (though her life is obviously considerably better than Eito's) but she is compassionate enough that she sees a child in need and decides to help.
It was an interesting read, and I can already tell it will probably make me cry at some point. I've already requested the next volume.

A headstrong young woman and a meek boy with a mysterious arm are on the run from military assassins in a dystopian Japan rife with social tension. This is a great, action-filled first volume with quick pacing that sets up the mysteries of the story incredibly well. Fantastic, artwork with clean linework, neat easy-to-follow panel composition, and detailed backgrounds. Excited to see where the rest of the story goes! Strong recommendation for fans of Akira, Sakamoto Days and The Promised Neverland.

I tried reading this a few times and just couldn't get myself to finish it any attempt. I would get maybe 1/3 of the way in and not have a desire to continue or even be able to push to finish it. Just can't put my finger on why I couldn't get through it.
I will give it another chance later on and maybe it's just I'm not in the mood to read it.

Auch wenn die Story an sich mir gefallen hat, hat es mich irgendwie nicht umgehauen. Ich bin mir allerdings nicht sicher, ob es einfach der Manga-Stil war oder ob es an der Story selbst lag.

Yknow as much as it’s similar enough to horror monster manga out there, I actually found it pretty decent like it’s really easy to read and the characters seem interesting.
I highly recommend this to action fans!

This was okay! I don't think this was really for me, but I liked the author's style and ideas, even if they are not new. I can see this really appealing to fans of older manga because it really has that type of style.

Tajemniczy dzieciak , zbuntowana rezolutna 19latka, dziwne moce, polowanie na uciekiniera z laboratorium, psychopata morderca, rządowa (?!) organizacja prowadząca szemrane eksperymenty na dzieciach. Na razie jestem zainteresowany, ale w sumie nic nowego (póki co) . Fajna kreska!
