It's 1999, and Eira Hart and Ru Tattersall are set up to co-host The Lonely Harts Club, a new late-night radio show to help New Yorkers find love. It's a last chance attempt for both Eira, expert in Celtic mythology and amateur Welsh matchmaker, and Ru, once-hot-shot Aussie DJ, to achieve their New York dreams.
The thing is, you either click with a co-host, or you don’t. It’s a bit like falling in love. There’s co-host chemistry, or there isn’t.
With the countdown to a new millennium, it feels like the world as they know it is about to end.
Radio is becoming commercialized and superficial. Lower Manhattan is gentrifying. The Lonely Harts Club feels like the last chance to hold on to something real. As confessions pour out over the late-night airwaves and their show gathers an impressive following of happily-matched couples, can The Lonely Harts Club make one last true match?
I write audio-only feel good romance fiction, and love to craft stories that will make you smile and remember that humans are loveable (in spite of it all!). My novels explore what it looks and feels like when things actually work out for two people in matters of the heart...not about things falling apart. And I'll always try to sneak an Aussie into the story line :)
LONELY HARTS RADIO is out now and only on Audible. I hope it brings you lots of listening joy!
The authentic accents are the best part of the read for me. I really wanted to like this but it's just too much of an emotional and dramatic romance for my taste.
Insta attraction/ Friends to lovers ⭐⭐⭐/5 On audible, I gave the narrators a 5-star rating, and the story a 2-star rating, leaving me at a three comfortably overall.
I added this book to my TBR last month when I saw its release. I interacted with ads for this book and even corresponded in comments with audible editors who were recommending this book. I was so excited! I knew the male narrator from movies of his that I enjoyed and could not wait to be able to have the time to listen to this. Sadly, I was very disappointed in the story. The narration however was terrific and the only reason I finished it.
This story for me was an issue of we as the reader have inside information that makes the activities going on in the book "Okay" but in reality, the characters acting within the book without that information are in the wrong. In this case, it's cheating without cheating. Just the implication of being willing to cheat is enough to turn me off of a book.
Although I don't read a lot of romance, I became curious about this author when I learned it was a pen-name of Ceridwen Dovey, whom I know for her literary fiction. And I have to say, this was a pleasant surprise! A sweet story, with excellent narration and sound production. It's currently free on Audible, as is another Adeline Knight title, which I will be checking out soon.
This is the first audiobook that I’ve listened to that was presented this way, with a cast of actors. It was so cool and such an interesting way to do it. The fact that it was based around a radio show also added an extra level of detail that made the listening experience so cool. You got to listen with music in the background, them having actual dialogue back and forth and other characters having their own voices too. You could feel the awkward cringe and the dead air from when their radio first started.
Having actual actors doing the voices added a nice touch too. Sometimes the voice artists can fall a bit flat in audiobooks and you could tell that these guys knew what they were doing. I also loved the fact that there was an actual Australian doing the voice of an Australian character. Nothing worse than having to listen to it being butchered for five hours 😂
This audiobook was free on Audible and that was literally the only reason I listened to it, but I’m very glad I did. It was short but fun.
Genre: Romance Format: Audio POV: Dual Spice: NA Age suggestion: 16+
I get the genre but I really wanted more from the read. Narration is excellent and it’s free on Audible. Maybe save to read over the Christmas holidays.
It was inevitable that I would love this audiobook - perhaps this was why I resisted the ads here on GR for so long! I started DJing on community radio 3 years after this story was set. Which, uh, makes me realise how old I am now. Ahem. This is a fantastic romcom, wonderfully nostalgic and enhanced by the performances behind Ru and Eira, who you just want to hug and/or have a pie with. Ru's characterisation particularly benefited from the author's own Australianness.
Yes, I will admit it...I was ridiculously distracted by the obvious pen name and did some Google sleuthing to locate the author's real name. That seemed to settle my neurodivergent urges lol
In short, I very rarely replay audiobooks/audiodramas - but this once will be an exception!
The actual story- 3⭐️ It felt very messy even though I could tell the MMC’s marriage was one of convenience for a green card (which, btw is fraud and maybe don’t have the FMC profess her love on radio as that would be proof of said fraud). Something didn’t land right when they finally get together.
This was a sweet novella of two radio hosts right before Y2K. She’s from Wales, and a matchmaker like her mother. He’s from Australia, and working for community radio after some mishap on regular radio. The chemistry was good, and I really loved the conversations they were having on the radio show. I’d listen to a real show like that!
Not terrible, but what I did find baffling is that they kept commenting on the MC's Welsh accent, yet the narrator didn't give her the tiniest hint of welsh at all (the mother character did, at least). A minor niggle, but it annoyed me, lol.
Loved this! Was lighthearted, the characters were lovable (including the supporting ones), and of course the narrators were AMAZING at bringing the story to life! The side Cupid/Titanic story was just a cherry on the top.
This audiobook was absolutely made by the chemistry between the two leads, the performance was great and the segments where they are doing their radio show sound genuine and completely natural.
This was a cute love story that was just a fun easy listen with a guaranteed happily ever after. Which is just what I wanted.
I listened to this book on audible and enjoyed it so much! The narration was so amazing! Adam (male narrator) was incredible, with his masculine voice and Australian accent. Erin (female narrator) sounded adorable with her sweet voice and British accent. There was also additional cast who added so much to the story. A feel good romance that I highly recommend!
MY RATING GUIDE: LONELY HEARTS RADIO began as a 3 for me, ending nearly at a 4. I had an issue with the MCs’ situation initially, because of where I believed the story was heading. As I listened, I wondered if this title perhaps just wasn’t going to be for me (all of which decreased my enjoyment). I’m glad I stayed with LHR because I ended up enjoying it in the end (I did peek ahead about 2/3 through, just to see if I was going to be greatly disappointed. But not to worry).
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS (BY THE END); 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).
1999, Greenwich, NY ~ Eira Hart, mid-20’s, arrived from a small village in Wales a number of months ago full of large dreams to live in NYC, pursuing a future career with Welsh Mythology in the country of her extended family. But after a few months in America, Eira has dropped out of college, moved into her uncle Gerry’s tiny Greenwich studio apartment and has accepted a temporary position at his place pf business co-managing a community radio station, PRN. Erira’s confidence has taken a mega hit.
Ru(pert) Bigsby Tattersall, newly married and 28, was Sydney, Australia’s former “radio darling” 3yrs running. Riding on this high, he decides to move to NYC with his young wife where they might both become hugely successful. They arrived a number of months ago but after losing his first big-time radio gig almost overnight, Ru has been struggling. Ru now fears if his newest radio show in NYC, a late night gig at Pirate Radio Network (PRN) in Greenwich Village (a shift which begins at 3am) doesn’t work out, he’ll have to return home to Australia a totally unexpected failure.
What happens when 3 young people who have given up everything to pursue their dreams, suddenly discover failure chasing them down? How long do they continue pursuing their dreams before its time to reconsider? LONELY HARTS RADIO is about new and the building of relationships, of family, of keeping hope when life gets rough, and the people that make a difference.
Comments ~ 1) I listened the the Audible Original audiobook purchased on a recent Sale, performed very nicely by Australian actor Adam Demos & Erin Richards. LHR is one of those audiobooks which benefits from well chosen performers whose combined voices bring out the best in the story. 2) LONELY HEARTS RADIO, by Adeline Knight, is a (mostly) upbeat and sweet Standalone Contemporary Romance novel which is set in NYC during the turning of the century from 1999 to 2000 (Anyone remember Y-2K?). 3) I recommend LONELY HEARTS RADIO to readers who enjoy slow burn romances, Australian actors/accents (audio version), mostly Clean romance fiction, novels with characters in unique professions.
READER CAUTION ~ PROFANITY - Minimal, if any. VIOLENCE - None. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - A mere mention, in a Closed Door scene.
The idea and cast are five stars, the execution and writing bring it down to negative numbers. The main character of Eira is written so ridiculously bad and cringy it brings the whole story down. Ru is incredibly sweat, sincere and nice while Eira is emotionally stunted, borderline sociopathic , narcissistic, and frankly mean-spirted. She is so mean and curt with Ru on air that it makes her so unlikable. She studied Celtic Mythology and supposedly is super proud of her heritage, but then told Ru she would not go more into the mythology on air after like one story. That could have added a lot of depth to it and again she said so in a mean way. She and her mother tout themselves as mystical matchmakers who can see connections yet .
It's 1999, and Eira Hart and Ru Tattersall are co-hosts of The Lonely Harts Club, a late-night radio show helping New Yorkers find love. Listeners call in and describe themselves, their likes, turn-offs, quirks, and ultimately their perfect lover. Those who like what they hear are given the chance to go on a date with caller one, hopeful that they will find themselves lucky in love.
Being a free Audible Original, I went into this with fairly modest expectations. I was after a light, easy read that would make me laugh and give me a break from my current stressors. With our Welsh and Aussie MCs, some fantastic accents came out to play, and I did enjoy hearing the narration in something other than American English 😅. Many of the Lonely Harts callers were fun, the Celtic mythology was beautiful, and our Co-Hosts family love stories were endearing, but I just couldn’t buy into Eira and Ru as a couple.
My issue starts and ends with Eira. I found it very difficult to connect with her, and found most of her interactions with Ru to be rude and frankly, mean. This could come down to the way the narrator interpreted her lines, but I struggled to warm to her after a very bad first impression. This meant that the rest of the story played out without my emotional investment, so by the time the happily ever after came along, I found it inauthentic and anticlimactic.
The concept itself was cute, the radio show was fun to listen to, and the 1990’s nostalgia hit hard, but Lonely Harts Radio wasn’t really my cup of tea. Might be a winner for regular romance readers, but I wouldn’t be rushing to give it a go.
This is a freebie on Audible and only available in that format. It’s super cute and, for this type of short format romance, I really enjoyed it.
The main couple are both likeable. Erin Richards’ lovely Welsh accent complemented Adam Demos’ Aussie one. They sounded very natural when they were narrating the radio hosting scenes.
The book was long enough that the listener had time to become invested in their lives. Plus, for me, I really became invested in the secondary romantic plot, featuring the female lead’s mother and uncle.
I do think Knight was trying to make New York another character but, to be honest, I was not won over by this aspect. It just sounded cold and expensive and ruthless. Then again, it’s not my lifelong dream to visit the place, so others might find it more appealing than me.
All in all, I’d be keen to read more by Knight (who, I'm assuming, is an Aussie herself).
