**Catch is a novella. It will take most readers 1 or 2 hours to read.**
When eighteen-year-old Miranda chases a purse snatcher on the Las Vegas Strip, the last thing she expects is for the pursuit to turn into an extended game of hide-and-seek. All Miranda wants are the old black and white photographs buried at the bottom of her purse. They’re the only things she has left of the grandmother she never knew. But how much is she willing to put on the line to save them? And is it possible she’s falling in love with a thief?
Michelle lives and writes in Utah, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Michelle mainly writes contemporary fiction, but occasionally branches into other genres.
While Catch is a novella it doesn't give a feeling of incompleteness. From beginning to end I was hooked. A fresh contemporary read that would be perfect for summer.
"If you look for excitement, you'll probably find trouble."
But maybe a little trouble would be worth it. Miranda is on her last family vacation before she heads off to college. Prompted by her mother, Miranda along with her fifteen-year-old sister Julie, set out to take photos in front of Vegas hotel signs just like their grandmother and her older sister did the first time they went to Vegas in 1967. All is well until a thief snatches Miranda's purse, inside of which is the stack of her grandmother's Vegas photos. So she gives chase. And then she loses sight of him. While sulking over a split hamburger and fries with Julie, Julie calls Miranda's phone on a whim. Amazingly, he answers. After telling her she can call him Ollie, he makes her a deal. If she can find him he'll give her one item from her purse of his choosing. Miranda just wants the photos though, and Ollie wants to save the best for last.
This was a cute and light little story. I enjoyed the whole purse thief who wants to play a cat and mouse game. Ollie is not what I thought, he was sweet and fun and really needed a friend. When he explains why he stole Miranda's purse it was not what I had expected but it was over the top drama either. This was sweet little book that was not full of drama and angst. Thank goodness.
Free ebook on Amazon. It’s a quick (one hour), fluffy, fun story. I needed that today.
He grabbed her purse. She ran after him desperate to get back the only photos she had of her grandmother. A game ensues between these two.
I was surprised by how much I ended up liking Ollie.
Yes, I know the premise is totally unbelievable, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun. I admit, I did have to shut my brain so as too not think too hard about certain elements of the story and my problems with them. Just suspend disbelief and enjoy the story for what it is, a piece of fiction. The rapport and chemistry between Ollie and Miranda make it worth the read. Besides, it’s short enough to read over a lunch break.
Cute, light, quick story. A unique plot that felt like a good book palate cleanser because it was refreshing, refreshing, and more adorably innocent from a lot of material I’ve been reading.

REVIEW I loved Michelle Davidson Argyle’s The Breakaway and Pieces (click for my reviews), so when the opportunity to be part of the tour for this novella arose, I had to be on it! Catch didn’t deliver the kind of emotional punch that the former two books did for me, but that’s okay because this is a different type of story and I still very much enjoyed it.
Miranda’s dad has to go to Las Vegas on business, and because Miranda will be going to college once summer is over, her family decided to turn it into their last vacation together. Miranda loves her family but is unsatisfied with the predictability of her life and disillusioned with guys after having made a couple of negative experiences. When her mother sends her and her sister on a hunt to rediscover their dead grandmother’s life via a bunch of old photographs, her purse is snatched from her by a young guy in a suit.
Almost to her own surprise, Miranda goes after him but eventually has to give up. Her phone, her mother’s camera, her wallet… lost. Most of all though, Miranda wants the pictures back because they cannot be replaced. When her sister suggests in jest that she should just call her own phone, she never expected the thief to pick up, nor the crazy bunch of days to follow after that initial conversation.
Miranda is a very likeable character that I think a lot of girls who are in that gap between high school and college, family and a life on their own, will be able to identify with. She’s lived a fairly sheltered life with parents who love her and left her a lot of freedom, but she’s also been burned by relationships in the past and does not trust easily. I really enjoyed the focus the novella put on family constellations, memories, reconstructing the past, but also looking towards the future and building your own life by making independent decisions.
As for Ollie, the thief, he remains a mystery for quite a big part of the book, and that’s part of the reason Miranda is fascinated by him. Why does a seemingly well-to-do guy steal purses? Why is he sending her on a ‘treasure hunt’ around the city to get her stuff back? Who is he, and how does he tick? I can’t say too much here because of spoilers, but I really enjoyed seeing the two of them get closer to each other and I loved the setting and the conversation when they really got to know one another. The moment was somehow suspended in time, both artificial and natural, and I found myself highlighting a lot of passages because I liked them so much.
There’s a twist towards the end that I wasn’t expecting, but it definitely added to the story and heightened the tension. The ending itself could have been cheesy, but wasn’t because it still manages to remain realistic and somewhat open (not in the sense of being left hanging).
Despite being rather short (20,000 words), quite a lot of themes are packed into Catch. What stood out for me was the wavering between opposites: safety vs. risk, family vs. independence, past vs. future, fear vs. desire. The way these subjects were treated went beyond the superficial and made me think about my own situation.
"In all reality, she wanted safety. Staying in one place could guarantee that. But she also craved excitement and adventure and had always dreamed of breaking out of her shell. To her, safety and excitement were akin to oil and water. Was it possible to have both?" (Loc. 716 / 75% through the ebook)
If you’re looking for a short contemporary treat to devour in one sitting, Catch should be up your alley, especially if you enjoy stories that fall into the overlap between YA and NA. The main characters are well-developed despite the shortness of the story, and the pacing kept me engaged throughout. All in all, a great story and a good way to check out the author’s writing if you’ve been thinking about reading one of her novels (which you should).
It's no secret I love a good novella. There's something refreshing about a short read with charming characters and an engaging and interesting story. Catch has both. I'm not even going to lie, the cover for this book drew me in every bit as much as the blurb did. The story sounded unique and, having just spent some time in Las Vegas earlier this year, I find that I'm enjoying books set there. The book had some great historical Las Vegas references in it. It almost felt like I was back there again.
"If you look for excitement, you'll probably find trouble."
Miranda is on vacation with her parents and sister in Las Vegas when her purse is stolen from her on the strip. Going against all common-sense rules, she pursues the guy who grabbed it. All she wants is to get back some family photos that were in her purse. Her younger sister forces her into a phone call with the purse-snatcher and thus begins a game of sorts between the two of them. It's not an entirely believable plot, but it's a fun escape for the hour or so it would take you to read it.
"I'd like it if you didn't forget any of this, actually."
I really liked the characters in this story. We actually find out a lot about them and what motivates them in this 90-page novella. Ollie might have been a criminal, but he was adorably charming. Miranda was determined, but vulnerable. I won't say any more for fear of spoiling the book, but the back-and-forth between Ollie and Miranda was great. They made me smile. This is a complete story – no cliffhangers here. Now, that said, I would *love* to have more of Ollie and Miranda in my life. I hope the author is planning a follow-up.

What started as a simple, short read, turned into a magnificent book, with a wonderful story. Michelle D. Argyle knows her writing skills, knows who to make a character loveable. From my point of view, it’s a hard thing to accomplish, especially in such a short story. But, she managed to do it and in an excellent way. What looked like a simple thief story, turned into a love one. Loved it from top to bottom!
Miranda leaves for a vacation in Las Vegas with her family, and she has been put by her mother to recreate some photos her grandmother once did in that town. Miranda takes her younger sister along, trying to redo the old black and white photographs her granny do, because she has the feeling this way maybe she is going to know her better. These are the only things she has from her, she never knew her, and she keeps the photos in the bottom of her purse. After taking one shot, a thief named Ollie steals her bag with the photos and everything she had in there. So she does everything possible to get them back.
Miranda tries to catch Ollie, runs after him, but he is much faster than her. Her cranky sister comes up with an idea to call the thief on Miranda’s phone. The unexpected thing it’s Ollie answers her phone, and that’s when everything changes. You have to give the book a try, it’s way too good to not give it a chance. I loved the game of hide and seek the two characters did, I loved how Michelle turned the story into a way I couldn’t imagined. I’ve never read something like this and I liked it. A brand new idea! Can’t wait to read more about Michelle D. Argyle! I highly recommend this book!
This is really a short book, like a novella, but I really enjoyed it. It’s a light read, something nice you can read after a book that made you „O.O omg!!” or something that was a serious read. Is just nice, fluffy, kind of a summer read.
I won’t talk too much about it cause why you would read it after? You need to read it and find out alone what’s gonna happen, if Miranda will catch the thief and get back his purse. And how can you fall in love with a stranger. I really was a bit sad that it ended so fast…
The characters are so nice and funny and you can’t get attached to them. They seem real, full of life, and even the situation/the idea of the book is weird nothing is getting wrong or fast-forward. About the idea of the book – even the book is so short it was original. I mean I never read it something like that. And even I don’t usualy read that kind of breezy books this is most one of my favorite.
So, if you want a light, nice, fast read pick this one. Is like you eat a cookie, is a little piece but is so good that you don’t even know how ended so fast. And you want more. I want more. This book is little but is full of emotions and life and happyness and sparkles of memories. I recommend it.
Miranda and her sister Julia are on vacation in Las Vegas. They are taking pictures to look like the exact ones their grandmother took. Then a man grabs Miranda's purse that has the pictures in it and takes off. Miranda chases him because the pictures are irreplaceable. Then they begin to contact each other through cell phones.
I love unconventional couples and odd ways of meeting but this one is a little out there. Once you get past the fact that she is doing something really really dumb, like chasing after a theif who could be very dangerous, it is an interesting story. I also thought it odd that her mother went along with trying to find him too. When Miranda does meet up with him there is an interesting story as to why he stole her purse.
It was a quick one hour read and something fun to squeeze into the reading schedule. I love novellas for that reason but then also kind of regret not getting more to the story. More about Miranda and what happens next. It ends with everything wrapped up in enough of a satisfying way though.
--- "I like to play games, and you're fun to play them with."
"The truth is, I think you're worth a risk."

What Miranda had thought to be a monotonous and boring vacation turned out to be a once in a lifetime adventure...
Catch was a short, and fun read. An adventure book compressed in a novella that will keep you on your toes as Miranda search for the next clue to complete the contents of the purse that was snatched on the Las Vegas Strip.
All she wanted to have were the old photographs at the bottom of the purse – she doesn’t mind her cards, phone, or even the money – all she wanted where the photos which served as the last of the memorabilia her grandmother has. So when the ‘thief’ suddenly gave her the chance to have it back – she didn’t hesitate to do so.
Curiosity got the best of her, but how much is she willing to risk having it all back?? But more than the contents of the purse, the ‘thief’ had caught her interest. She was off to college, and have a great future ahead of her – is it possible for her to fall in love with him??!! But there was more to the thief than he lets on…
Catch is fast-paced, adventure-packed with a surprising romance and a lovely ending wrap in a novella you wouldn’t want to miss!

This was a short and sweet romance story. I loved getting to know Miranda's character through the fun game of hide-and-seek she ends up playing with the thief who swiped her purse while her family is on vacation in Las Vegas. The book starts by introducing Miranda and her sister Julie, who are on a quest to visit places around Vegas that her grandmother did once upon a time. Miranda's purse is stolen by Ollie, a suit-and-sneaker wearing thief who Miranda valiantly tries to run down. Ollie is intrigued by Miranda and begins a game of hide and seek with her where every time she manages to find him around town he rewards her by returning a stolen item from her purse. After a few meetings, Miranda and Ollie get to know each other and Miranda finds herself opening up to this strange boy despite her history with asshole boyfriends who have abused her trust. The story was sweet and although it was short, I felt it was complete and self-contained. It gave you just enough time to get to know the main characters, explore their relationships with each other, and finally wrap it up with a happy ending. I'd recommend this if you're looking for a short and sweet romance read to kill and hour with.
Eighteen year old Miranda and her fifteen year old sister, Julie are on their way to Vegas with their parents. After summer vacation, Miranda is off to college away from her family and she is already missing her younger sister. Miranda has had her share of being broken hearted by old boyfriends and wonders if she'll ever find that special one as her sister 'believes' she already has. But while Miranda and Julie are out on the strip taking pictures, Miranda feels a sharp tug on her shoulder and finds herself chasing the man who snatched her purse. When she catches a glimpse at the 'criminal', she is surprised and impressed to see a young, handsome man smiling back at her. Is it possible to find your soul mate in circumstances as strange and unlikely as this one. Most assuredly not (?)
A cute story that is definitely more geared to the younger crowd.
This is a very short and quick read. I was able to finish it in just a couple of hours. But in those two short hours I was captivated by such a unique and interesting storyline. I can honestly say I have never read another story like it. The chase scene had my heart pounding and it felt as if I was watching an action movie scene play out before me. I was almost as anxious as Miranda every time she would wait for a response from her purse thief. I actually really enjoyed every scene she had with the purse snatcher. Who would have guessed that I would have liked a character who was a thief. But by the end of the book I, too, had fallen in love with his character and was thinking does it really matter that he started out as a thief? In my opinion, not really. I definitely recommend this book, especially if you want to read something good, but quick!
This sweet, fun read was a breath of fresh air for a number of reasons. The premise seemed unique--can't say I've ever seen another book or film quite like it. It's rare to find a clean read with characters in this age range, and to find college-aged kids dealing with relatable, garden-variety quandaries like "who do I want to be?" instead of dark, twisted pasts. It was just lovely to spend a few hours with good-hearted characters rather than a boatload of angst.
I especially loved the emphasis on family love in the story. That rang very true with my experience in my late teens--you find yourself looking more closely at parents and grandparents for hints of how to "do this adult thing," often asking them hard questions about what it means to build a life.
The novella length seemed just right for this fun, romantic story.
Imagine being on vacation in Las Vegas, touring the city, and having your purse snatched. What would you do?
For Miranda, the answer was simple. She tried to chase down the snatcher. But that's just the beginning.
As I read CATCH, I kept telling Miranda her ideas were a bad thing, while at the same time urging her to make the choice I wouldn't just to see what would happen.
Ms. Argyle kept me turning pages, hoping things would turn out the way I wanted.
This was an easy, light read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You know how when it's rainy or when you're travelling and all you want to do is be cooped up with a good, light book? This book is perfect, absolutely perfect for that. <3
Decent read. I think it was perfect for its length. I'm not sure I would have wanted to read a full length version of this story. I liked the normalness of Miranda, she was a typical teenager. Her parents surprised me though, all they said about sex was be careful, that's a new one for me. Overall, this was a nice short read.
This was a cute, short book that I easily finished in about an hour. I thought the premise sounded a little ridiculous with a girl falling in love with a boy who steals her purse in Las Vegas. But there was a lot more to the story than just that. It wasn't so weird once I understood more. This was just a fun, quick, light-hearted book.
This was such a fun read! The characters were great and it was a really sweet romance. I actually kind of wish this was a full length novel--I wouldn't mind hanging out with these characters some more :)
A sweet, wholesome, and feel-good tale that will capture the heart of any teen, or sweep an adult back in time to memories of their first love. An absolutely delightful read; you'll hardly have time to Catch your breath.
While I did find it kind of cute, I also found it really odd. I didn't identify with Miranda making the choices she did. Nor did I agree with them. What a risk.....
A short, breezy romance between an 18-year-old and the man who steals her purse. What's lost is more important than her purse: it's the only remaining photos of her grandma, and this adds weight to the story. This was a nice, refreshing pick-me-up read.
