Cynthia My name is Cynthia, and I live in the Bugpocalypse. I eke out a living in a barren and hostile post-apocolyptic landscape, foraging for food, hiding from deadly bugs, and sleeping in abandoned shipping yards. You know, the whole nine yards. But I have a problem: I have a stalker. And not just any stalker. He’s powerfully muscular, fiercely protective, and…purple. Yes, he’s freakin’ purple. Cov’k is a Xarc’n hunter. And he claims I’m his mate. There’s no way I’m going to be some ferocious warrior’s pet! I don’t care if he saved me from the swarm. And I definitely don’t care about his talented tongue. I’m getting the hell out of Dodge. If he wants me, he’s going to have to find me first!

The heroine:Cynthia - since the alien bugs invaded the planet, she has been alone. She finds different places to sleep at night and forages for food on her own. Lately she had been sleeping in a shipping container in the middle of a shipping yard. She had a padlock so her things wouldn’t get stolen and also so she could lock the door from the inside at night so nobody could break in. Recently though, she has seen one of those purple alien hunters everywhere she goes during the day. He has been stalking her and even saved her when a bunch of the alien bugs cornered her.
The Hero:Cov’k - he was on earth fighting the scourge of bugs when he first scented his mate. He knew of some Xarc’n hunters that went around smelling every human female they could in hopes of finding their mate, but Cov’k was just lucky and hadn’t even been trying when he scented Cynthia. Since that day, he had been following her, making sure he kept her safe.
The story: One day when Cynthia went out foraging, Cov’k followed her into a store where she had hidden some of her supplies. He told her that the summer swarm was coming, and she had to leave with him right away. She didn’t believe him, thinking that the entire earth had already been swarmed, but when she went outside, she could see what he meant. The number of bugs heading her way was like a never-ending carpet of creepy crawlies. Cov’k picked her up and took her to safety, but when he told her she was his, she didn’t like that. She valued her freedom too much to just be a toy to an alien warrior.
I only have one full book left in this series and I have liked every book I have read in the series so much that I just am not ready for it to end. I have also read the spin-off mountains series. So, for this one I decided to go back to the beginning. This was the prequel for the series. In this book most humans still mistrusted the Xarc’n warriors because the human governments told them that the Xarc’n hunters most likely sent the alien bugs to earth in order to invade the planet. As much as I really liked the later books where human’s and Xarc’n warriors work together to fight the scourge, I kind of liked going back to the earlier days of the bugpocalypse.
This book is the prequel to the Xarc'n Warriors Series and does a good job of introducing the world this series takes place in. I backtracked for this book since I have already read a lot of the books that have been released so far and have enjoyed them all so far. It was nice to get to read about Cynthia & Cov’k and I also enjoyed the mentions of other characters whose stories I have already read.
I read this book out of order in relation to the rest of the series (honestly, I didn't realize there WAS a prequel until I was a good chunk into the series otherwise I would have read this first) and HOO-BOY do I like these scourge-fighting warriors. Sure, they don't have the best social skills, but they are here fighting the good fight against the bugs even though there are plenty on Earth who aren't thrilled to have them planet-side.
That said, thanks to the government propaganda about the hunters, Cynthia is NOT pleased to have a big purple alien following her around. In fact, she has no idea what to do with Cov'k at first. So she ran. Fortunately for her, Cov'k followed her. He protected her when she needed it and found her a decent group to settle in with once she reached Franklin. All without her knowing, for the most part.
On Cov'k's end, he wasn't quite sure what to do with Cynthia since she seemed determined to get as far from him as possible. A little time and a little space (or so she thought) gave her the chance to come to terms with the big guy and his protective streak.
Bugs, bad guys, a little miscommunication, and a couple who (eventually) find happiness during an invasion. Yesssssss.
Man, it takes a lot for me to give a crap rating, but alas, here we are. How this got so many 5☆ reviews I'll never know.. I'd give it a 2.5☆ at best.
Writing was simple but alright, world building was okay, spice was mediocre and way too insta for me personally but none of that was even what really made me dislike it.
[Gonna drop a spoiler from the end of the book here]
What really did me in was how this girl nearly gets SA'd and, instead of warning the other girls in the group or saying a darn thing about how this toolbag put hands on her and threatened to grape her and WOULD HAVE if not for Cov'k showing up, she just leaves.... Not a peep about it, not a secret warning to her friends, nothing? Just a friendly goodbye to the team and skips off to greener pastures with her new beau, leaving the group with an unhinged grapist in their camp and no clue of this altercation. Immediate disgust. Cynthia is a coward. Even worse, she's a coward with a bodyguard and would have had no repercussions for voicing her truth, yet still chose not to without a single reason provided. Pathetic.
The whole book went up in flames during that scene alone, and so did my interest in reading the next installment.

What a wonderful story. The world building was beautifully done. I loved every the author’s attention to detail. The characters were interesting. I love the conflict and resolution that the author created. The way that the concept of fated mates was approached in this story was very intriguing. I really enjoyed this story.
Cynthia & Cov’k are a good introduction to the series. He is the hunter/warrior who falls fast and becomes the silent stalker. Cynthia is way more determined and effective at surviving than I could ever be. The push and pull with these two was entertaining and it is a great intro into the series.
This was a good intro to the series. I was two books into it before I realized there even was a prequel. I think this does a good job setting up what to expect from the world and the lore around the Xarc'n.
Audiobook. Short and sweet. Aliens and humans after bugs invaded earth. Spicy spicy story. It was a good read with good character development and story telling.
This is a fun prequil in the series. Cynthia is on her own in the bugpocalypse when she gains a stalker alien Xarc’n warrior, Cov’k, who claims she’s his mate. He helps her get to Franklin without her knowing. This was a quick read, but I would suggest reading it after you’ve read a few others in the series as a supplement, not as your first book, because it’s not a great example of the series overall. It feels very rushed, and the character development and world-building aren’t as strong as in the other books.
