I’ve always wanted to write. Ever since I was little, I would craft stories and poems but the idea to actually do it “for real” never really crossed my mind until last year. After sitting on three paragraphs of what would eventually become my first novel, I decided to expand upon what I had. At the time I had no real idea of where the story would go, I just knew I had the time to do something with it.

I hadn’t researched market trends, I had no idea about query letters or the evil synopsis, and I was green on the idea of agents and editors and all that is publishing, really. I just wanted to write something I enjoyed. I didn’t plot, outline, or character build, I just wrote. And then an author friend mentioned that I should take my writing to a conference.

So with the confidence that my novel would surely be welcomed by all who read it, I signed up for as many seminars and critiques as I could. I knew someone would love it. In those two days, I found out I had a lot to learn.

Funny, but as a former English teacher, you’d think I’d have figured out the importance of editing and revision and revising again. You’d think I’d have known that the first draft is just that, a draft. And when the critiques started coming in, I thought I was done for. Not that the premise wasn’t good (I was told it was), not that the characters weren’t believable (I was told they were), but I used too much passive voice, I tense shifted and there were some holes in the plotline.

A few agents really liked it, but the market trend couldn’t support it. Some were not fond of the way I told the story. I queried and queried my way to 57 flat out rejections and a number of partial and full requests that didn’t pan out. But along the way I got some great criticism and pointers and I made the story better. Then, on a whim, I trolled the SavvyAuthors website and signed up for a three line pitch to editor Lauri Wellington and I did a happy dance when she requested my full manuscript.

A month later, she responded that she loved the story and the concept but it moved too slowly but I could resubmit if I revised. I informed her I sent her a revision that was based on the opinions of agents, authors and peers but I had the original (cleaned up, of course) and I was sending it in to see if it was more of what she was looking for. And guess what? It was! One caveat, I had to revise the manuscript into past tense. Easy peasy, right? Wrong.

Revising into past tense from present is line editing your entire novel. And it kinda stinks. By the end, I thought my eyes were gonna start bleeding and pop out onto my keyboard. But you know what? That little “exercise” tightened up what was loose, filled in any plot holes that might’ve still been there and forced me to realize I could be a better writer.

The road to publication can be long. It can be a hop, skip and a jump from your first query. Nothing in publication is set in stone. The market is always changing. And the biggest thing I learned is that it’s all subjective. Agents A-Y may pass but all you need is Agent or Editor Z to believe in you as much as you believe in yourself. And I believe in my first novel. And I am happy that Black Opal Books does too. I hope you do, as well.

After reading Torn (book 1), I was so eager to read book 2! I had to know what happened next! Now, after reading Darkness Betrayed (book 2), I have to know what happens in Book 3!!!

People, you don't understand yet, unless you've read this book!! I kept wanting to throw my kindle out of frustration! Sam, GROW UP!! You've had the weight of the world placed on your shoulders and a lot of pressure put on you, but stop with the whining! The world, contrary to your belief, does NOT revolve around you! She keeps making all of these decisions, without any regard for the consequences, or who she is going to hurt in the end.

Her friends are all back, and we meet some new ones as well. When you meet certain characters, you know there is going to be a bombshell dropped at some point... and you sit and wait and wait and wait. And there's nothing. Just when you've thought "Maybe your gut feeling is totally off and you have nothing to worry about" .. BAAAAMMMMMM!!! She hits you with it! And it's not even what you suspect!

Christine, you're on my list. I'll be watching you! No more unsuspected twists, I don't know how much more I can take!

Christine Hughes has done it again - not only does she leave you hanging in Book One (Torn) but she gives you lots of twists and turns and leaves you hanging and wanting more in Darkness Betrayed. With Samantha's friends back and new ones around the ending will definitely surprise you and wanting the next book quickly. Would I recommend this book to others? - you bet I would.

This series so far is a definite must read. Well done Christine

Sorry Christine! Again, I wanted to love it, but damn, you made that really hard for me. I can say that I really, really got into this one...and you made me cry. And not to be offensive, but I did find this one better written than the first book. Even though this was an ARC, there weren't that many grammatical errors and it flowed really well.

Why I didn't love this....ETHAN

To be completely honest, Ethan is my favorite character. Not Sam, not Damien, not Lucas, etc. Unlike Sam, he tries to do what is right, always. And although his choices are not always great, he does it for the greater good, and he does it for Sam. The fact that he is completely betrayed broke my heart. To watch her slowly destroy him ate at me. I will give the author that. She built this up where I slowly felt his pain, her betrayal, and her decline into denial. But because my favorite character was the one that ultimately paid the price, I feel like I'm betraying him by saying that I loved this book. Perhaps book 3 will redeem the series.

Why Ethan and not Sam - Although I empathize with Sam's position, I mean who would want to have to balance dark and light, I still found her to be an extremely annoying brat. "Woe is me" is her theme. Yes, she does have a horrible future, but look at the greater picture and stop being so selfish. She has good people watching her back, a great guy who worships her, and the chance to make the ultimate difference. To make matters worse, enter Damien, the devil. Um? Hello, the devil! What about that screams "he's just misunderstood?". Even with everyone telling her to be careful, even after Lucas' betrayal in book 1, you think she would have learned her lesson? She still gets "seduced" by the whisperings of the devil...yep, he was seductive, but then remember, Eve? A little whispering in her ear resulted in eviction and pain. Our little Sam just can't seem to grow up and trust the lessons learned or to trust the people around her.

So yeah, I've got no love for Sam. At times she displayed the qualities I wanted to see in her, and maybe it is just me, because I really want her to be smarter, more focused, and less whiny. However, for the majority of the book, she just kept justifying her behavior and hey, everyone kept calling her out on it too. Now mind you, I felt this way about her in book 1 too, and I guess the good news is that she is consistent...no dramatic 180 for her.

We do get more Sebastian, Lucas, and the other characters from book 1, in addition to a couple of new ones. So before I give away more than I should, I am going to close with....I do think others will see the above as "crap" cause they just feel for Sam, and will instead just love the way the series is building (I would if I just didn't feel so much for one of the characters over all of the others combined). I won't say it is perfect, but I do think it is improving as we move through the series.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3 and 1/2 stars!
Christine Hughes starts off with a bang and keeps momentum the entire story, ending in a final whimper--yours.

I don't know where to begin. Honestly, I liked the new character, Damien, even though he is Ethan's adversary (its a definite love/hate relationship). He is also a driving force in the story. The enigma. The bat and glue. That character you're never sure where you stand, but always hope that he'll be what you want.
I was honestly disappointed in Sam. I want a fan of her in the last book and thought she would grow our change here, but she was this constant, unchanging thing that just got on my nerves. It want until the very end when we see some kind of quasi-light at the end of the tunnel. Not only her development but inner-character relations seemed off to me and not as well put together as they could have been.

The plot itself was brilliant and strings you along like a puppet and puppeteer. There's conflict on top of conflict with action and drama, romance intrigue-- right up until those ending moments and you regain enough bodily control to purge "oh. My. God. Shut the front door. Oh no she didn't. What the hell!" In such quick succession you don't care how ridiculous you just sounded; you're too confused at who you're most upset with. One of the characters or Christine for putting them, and you, in this position. Yet, past all that, you want that next book. You need to know a better resolution.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, so when I was offered up an arc of the second book, I jumped at the chance. I couldn't wait to find out what happened with this well developed cast of characters.

I have to admit, although I did like this book, I really didn't find it nearly as entrancing as the first. During a great portion of the book, I really wanted to smack Sam for the decisions that she was making. Although I do see the point of everything that happened, I feel like she really should have known better and stayed away from those blasted apples. At the same time, everything that did happen did well to move the plot forward at a quick pace, and even though I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first, I can't wait to read the next book.

In a way, this kind of reminds me of Twilight. I loved the first book, but really didn't care for the second, yet loved the last two. I'm hoping this is also the case in this story. I could see the point of everything that happened in the second book, just didn't quite agree with where the story was going until it got to it's destination. I really feel this will also be the case with this series. I won't care as much for this book, but will appreciate the lessons learned here later on in the series.

Still a great series and a fantastic cast. Highly recommended!

Note: I received a free arc in return for an honest review.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
First off, not sure if I like this cover as much as I loved the first one. The guy is hot don't get me wrong, he just seems a bit old... Oh well. Onto the story. Like the cover, I did not like this book as much as the first one. I'm not sure why. I just couldn't really connect with the characters or the story this time around. Because of this it read a bit slow for me. The story was very well written it just wasn't for me.
Sam made me beyond frustrated. I wanted to give her a good tap to the head. Like when did she become the only person I. The world that mattered?im sick of her sob story, like put in your big girl panties and "man" up, I did enjoy the love triangle even though I am disappointed in what happened to it. That made me think of Sam again so back to her because I am still mad!! What a crap ending (not to you Christine). Sam totally took the easy way out. Must be nice to to have all that guilt crushing you. But on the bright side... Maybe because of that needing there will be a new love interest.
I will read book three even though I didn't care for this instalment because I want to see if I can get reinvested in the characters. Plus I do want to see what will become of everything after what went down. I would recommend this book to angel lovers.

I didn't think that the first in this series could be bested, but Christine Hughes definitely did that with Darkness Betrayed. The characters from Torn develop in completely unexpected ways...each chapter, in fact, kept me wanting to fly into the next one. There was nothing predictable and yet it all felt right, even when some characters did not end up maturing enough to rise to the occasion. Still, this very thing kept the plot real. A quick read, due to the plot's pace, but one I will re-read!

A giant leap from Torn. I found myself yelling at Samantha and questioning her choices. I was pulled into her struggle trying to balance good and evil within herself. It is central to her overcoming the giant obstacles that kept falling into her path. I could understand how easy it was to succumb to the evils around her but inspired by her determination to try and figure it out.

This is definitely a must read. Be warned, you will be left wanting more.

I was given this book as an advanced readers copy and all I can say is WOW. Twist and turns of this book will leave you wanting to throw your kindle/book at a wall... I wanted to reach in and grab Sam by the neck and make her wake up. I can’t believe how may turns are in the book. I wanted to hug them all. This is really amazing book. and I you won’t be sorry for reading it.

Man Samantha is off the chain...she still has not learned how to control herself fully and to make it even worse for her she has to deal with the betrayal of her best friend. She finds comfort in Ethan but that won't last long when Damien the original Fallen comes into the picture. Everyone keeps telling Samantha that he just doesn't help without a price and she will soon learn this.

It seems that she will fight more between the darkness and the light and whatever decisions she chooses can go either way. Damien is a shady character through and through I really loved how the author incorporated the apple and what it does.

As a character I was really hoping to see Samantha grow but she is like a love lust 18 year old and it drove me crazy with how she acted. Especially towards Ethan.

She will still have to learn how to control her emotions and will be dealt some tough situations but in the end can she handle it all?

Towards the end there was a big shocker for me on what Ethan does and even though I could tell something was up I didn't think about that happening.

I hope there could be a book three because I want more. I want to see if Samantha can grow and come into what she needs to be.

While Samantha, Ethan and the others are still trying to recover from the betrayal of one of their own, the one thing everyone agrees on is her training needs to continue, even be amped up. During one such training session, an Exiled shows up claiming to have a message to deliver for "the one who maintains balance." The problem is that so far, that's just a title. Samantha is spending a lot of time fighting her destiny.

An offer of help to defeat Sebastian comes from Damien, the purest fallen. Who's Damien? You might know him better as the devil, aka Lucifer. Uh, yeah, that guy. Seems he's not just a pretty face, but the only fallen who has no hope of changing sides to become one of the Faithful. His job was, is, and always will be to sow despair among humankind. Then, as God has commanded, take back that despair and leave a little hope in its place. The meeting ends, but not as Samantha and Ethan thought it would. Sam is taken by an Exiled and held prisoner.

Has anybody ever told you not to make a deal with the devil? Really bad idea. There is always a price to pay and the price will be steep. Deals will not be stacked in your favor and will always be painful. But hey, Sam is a stubborn teenage girl, albeit eighteen years old, who can't seem to stand being told not to do something. When Sam wakes up, she's chained to a stone wall, being forced to listen as an Exiled tells her exactly how self-centered and selfish she has been behaving. Of course, she is only 18, her life as she knew it was sort of a lie, but Sam is over doing the whole "pity me" thing. She's about to get a new trainer, disappoint more than a few people and hurt one beyond endurance.

Before she can even wrap her head around everything, she has to deal with being the one the world is counting on to maintain balance. She doesn't want the job, not really. Sam wants everyone to tell her what to do, who to trust and they can't. She needs to figure these things out for herself. Her actions drive someone very close to her to make a deal signed in blood that will drive home some very painful realizations.

Hughes has outdone herself in this second installment of the Torn series. Darkness Betrayed is an amazing piece of work. She has nailed to perfection the attitude of the selfish teenager who goes about things without serious regard for how her actions and thoughts will impact those around her. The truth about the betrayal in Torn is revealed (not saying who in case you haven't read that one yet), but trust lost is hard to get back.

New characters are introduced, again, some you're going to love to hate, some you'll feel sorry for. Companions are lost in battle and hard lessons are learned. Sometimes, if you pound hard enough, the lesson does penetrate and take hold. Just don't expect anyone to feel sorry for you that you had to learn that lesson the hard way.

I loved Darkness Betrayed. I found myself empathizing with the characters, wanting to smack Samantha upside the head and tell her "wake up and smell the coffee." I (seriously) wanted to nail Damien to the wall and tell him "enough with the apples already." My chest felt heavy and I wanted to cry at the end. I had to ask Hughes "please tell me there's a book three coming." Yes. There is. Oh thank goodness.

Love, sacrifice, forgiveness, deceit, and treachery all combine in a beautifully crafted story. Well written, nearly perfect editing again. I want to tie her down to her computer then beg and grovel until she finishes the next one. This promises to be one of those series you recommend to your friends who enjoy the same books you do. Introduce them to this author; they'll thank you for it.

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank Christine Hughes, author of Darkness Betrayed, for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this awesome book.

I read Torn, a month ago and loved it totally and then I signed up for reviewing book 2 but I'm a little disappointed with book 2 but it may have happened because after reading book 1 I had a very high expectation with book 2 but somewhere I felt a little disappointed with the whole story.

Sam was great in book 1 and I really felt her emotions and the turmoil she was suffering through, the indecision about whether she is Faithful or Exiled, her feelings for Ethan, betrayal of Lucas, death of her father and the greatest revelation that she and her father and her two close friends are the descendants of fallen angels but in book 2 I found her indecision to be a little dragged, I mean come on girl how much more time do you need to figure out what you should do? I know that she is meant to walk a thin line which divides darkness and light but she couldn't find her balance even in book 2 and keep venturing like a confused kid when she should be matured and tough. It seemed that gaining the powers made her weak instead of strong.

I loved Damien from my heart, I mean he is the only one who has a clear head of what he wants and what he wanna do and I liked Lucas's character as well but Ethan? Well, I loved him in book 1 but book 2 changed my viewpoint about him and it seemed as if he is the one who is the most confused than all the others out there. He keeps on debating whether to fall totally for Sam or not and when he failed his duty of saving and protecting Sam, it made me furious. I couldn't get that why does loving Sam will interfere with his duty? I loved Malena as well, she is bitchy and strong and she knows how to hold her ground.

The writing style of the author is great as always and I liked the words she chose for Damien's dialogues because it brought out the ancient feeling about him and distinguished him from the other teenagers.

The story is awesome and though I didn't like Sam so much but there is no denying the truth that the unpredictable twists and turns that the story took really spiced it up and the action scenes are vividly described giving them a real feel. The mystery and suspense regarding Lucas, the box of Hope, Sebastian and his plans really made the read intriguing and overall Damien's true self and the confusion whether he is on the good or bad side really made the read a page turner.

All in all a good read for ya all and I'll recommend this book for it's unique take on the ancient mythology and the contemporary presentation of it and you would definitely like the direction in which the story flowed. I'll be definitely reading book 3 and I'm anxious for it.

I got this book from Lovers Of Paranormal Group of Goodreads under the Read to Review scheme.

I received this book for free from LoP in exchange for an honest review.

This was another wonderful read by Christine Hughes. It's in continuation to Torn . Ethan and Samantha are still reeling from Lucas's betrayal. Their relationship with each other has also reached a shaky ground. To make matters worse, Damien, the truest fallen, the Devil himself, enters the picture.

Samantha, in my opinion is not a strong character. She is very gullible. This is seen in how susceptible she is to Damien. Throughout the book, she is wallowing in self-pity rather than taking a stand, standing on her own two feet and taking action. Despite people repeatedly telling her to watch where she is going, to think about the decisions she is making, she just swats them off like flies. Even Malena, a former Faithful, who has now become one of Damien's minion warns her, but she still doesn't listen. She does not even pay heed to her gut feeling.

Damien was a likable character with shades of grey. He is the Devil, so you can't expect him to do what he does for purely altruistic reasons. He is cheeky and sexy as sin and there is an instant connection between him and Sam. The heat between them can burn you. But Sam should have known better. She constantly thinks emotionally rather than rationally or even go with her gut. Sam's decisions ruin one too many lives. I can understand the chemistry between them . I can even understand the pull she feels towards Damien. but I hate her for what she did to Ethan.

Sam has been whining since book one and that is just plain annoying. The story is set at a good pace, and we find out more about how and why Lucas betrays Sam and Ethan. The story line was good but, Sam's whining makes it considerably hard to read the book. I think, it's high time she realizes that her actions have consequences. Its time she stop her pity party and do something.

Ethan, poor guy, has been pretty much broken by Sam. He loved her so much, but she did not look at him twice, once Damien enter's the picture. For someone who have been life long friends, Sam does not understand Ethan at all. She easily believes Malena and Damien, when they tell her Ethan can no longer protect her, that he'll leave her. This is yet another example of Sam's predisposed behaviour.

Despite Sam and her annoying ways, I still really liked this book. A lot of questions answered, and a lot of questions have come to the forefront. Though the ending of the book did break my heart. Still I eagerly await the next book in the series and hope that Sam learns to be a better and stronger person, and that she is not as gullible as she has been in these past two books.

A 3.5/5 starer book .

Ugh, I loved this book and hated it all at once. Ok, I really loved it-it was even better than the first one. However, I hated the choices Sam kept making. I understand that she doesn’t fit in with either group, she has to “walk the line” but is it too much to ask for common sense?! Hello, when the devil shows up and starts flirting with you causing crazy emotions to get stirred up shouldn’t you take a step back and think? Everyone, even Malena, who was a former Faithful tells Sam to be careful but she refuses to listen. I knew something horrible was going to happen, but the ending nearly broke my heart. I’m sure Ms. Hughes will have everything turn out “correctly” in the end (at least my idea of correctly), but in the meantime I wanted to take my iPad and beat some sense into Sam!! The angel that told Sam she would suffer for her choices indicated to me that Sam would have to learn to take responsibility for her actions and really work to remain one of the Faithful. Her actions cost her more than she ever could have imagined.

The world building that Hughes does in her books is amazing. I always feel like I’m right there in the middle of the action. That’s also is because she does such a great job with all of her characters. I loved Ethan and even started to warm up to Malena. I like Sam as well; I was just really frustrated with her attitude and lack of foresight in this book. I think that was all part of Hughes’ plan though. I think she developed her characters in this book so that in the next book Sam will be more willing to listen to others and make the right decisions. Let’s face it, even though this is fiction it’s still dealing with a teenage girl who is pretty clueless & careless about what’s going on. Teens and YA (college-aged adults) aren’t known for listening to counsel and learn through their mistakes. Sam definitely has a hard head and will have to learn from her mistakes. The only question is can she ever regain what she lost because of her mistakes? I know this sounds vague and cryptic, but I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone. I really hope that she can because others sacrificed a great deal.

If you can’t tell I was completely enthralled during this book. Even when I was upset with Sam I still couldn’t stop reading! It’s a great read with characters who you love even when you see their flaws. I think this is one of Hughes’ talents in writing that will serve her well. . I was heartbroken at the end, and now am going to pester Ms. Hughes for her next book incessantly!!

I received this book for free from LOP in return for an honest review.

Christine Hughes has definitely gone above and beyond in this second series. She gets into the story quickly without any unnecessary explanations – it virtually picks up from where we left off in Torn. The transition from past to present is well defined and there is a definite sense of time shown here.

The plot mirrors that of the first book (kill Sebastian, retrieve the Box of Hope, save the world) and is still in keeping with the interesting, modified versions from the Bible. The role of Damien was fascinating to read. His language is very strong and commanding and the word choice signifies he is from an ancient time and place. We find that the notorious acts of the devil that we perceive in real life are not reflected in this story – the devil Hughes has created would always give people the choice. Throughout the book I kept asking myself will he betray Samantha? Through the knowledge of religion it is widely known that Satan is untrustworthy and manipulative. Although some of these traits are revealed in a mild form in the book it was however surprising to see how the ending reveals itself. It still leaves me undecided as to whether Damien is good or evil.

As for Samantha’s character however, frustration does have a habit of resurfacing at intervals when reading as her point of view. She neededs to shut off her selfish emotions to make the right decision and seeing people for who they really are. She makes these decisions with her heard rather than her heart and doesn’t listen to the obvious warnings. There will always be a character you don’t agree with in a book and Samantha just didn’t fit with the mainstream heroine I have in my head. I hope she snaps out of her the-world-is-out-to-get-me state - we need a warrior, not a little princess.

That said I do appreciate the undercurrent of good vs. evil and the idea that Hell is on Earth. Free will is always reiterated in this book but the consequences of each characters' choices are concealed until it’s too late.

** I received a free e copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review **

Wow! I had a hard time reading the first book in this series but this one was amazing! I am actually sorry that it ended. It was really that good. For me, Darkness Betrayed succeeded in all the ways that Torn didn't.

The Characters were so great. They were really well written this time around. I loved the new additions, especially Damien. Sweet, sexy, dangerous Damien!!

The storyline was interesting and gripping. There were twists and turns all over the place to keep you reading and keep you guessing. the romance aspect of this book was sooo good! Right up until the end, I still had no idea which way I wanted it to go and I'm so glad that Christine Hughes had to make that choice instead of me.

There was one part of this story that really tugged at my heart strings and had me bawling like a baby. I don't want to give anything away but the part with Samantha and Azrael at the ski resort... tears were shed.

Also, I would like to point out that the ending did not, at all, go the way I expected it to. Talk about a surprise ending! I'm not sure I would have chosen to end the book the same way but that is why I am a reader and not a writer. The fact that it was so unexpected just made it that much better, I think.

I almost gave up on this series after reading Torn but I am so glad that I stuck it out for Darkness Betrayed. I LOVED it and I can only hope that the author is planning on making it a trilogy because I would love to see what happens next for Samantha and the rest of my new friends.

R2R (LoP) : Darkness Betrayed

I received a free copy (through LoP,) in exchange for a review.

Continuing the story, Samantha and Ethan have had a huge blow dealt to them. A person that they loved deeply is no longer with them; has chosen the other side. How can two people get over this hurt? Samantha is still trying to channel herself and find the right balance, between dark and light. Ethan is becoming more withdrawn from her, making the hurt even more to bear. Now, enters a new character, one that everyone knows, but have never really met, Damien. Through his help, Samantha is learning how to control herself, but at what cost? The battle is far from over and it just got a lot more complicated.

'Slowly, he began to loosen his grip and I began to float upwards, by arms hanging limp beside me. I was bathed in light, surrounded by hope. My jacket feel to the ground although I was barely aware of taking it off. With a crack, my wings opened up, lifting me high into the air.
Beams of light poured into me erasing all darkness. I was filled with hope and love before I was set back on the ground.'

Another great one from Christine! A great way to introduce the devil into the story line, since it was bound to happen. I did not see the ending happening this way, so it was a huge surprise. I know that there will be another story, for this series, since we all need to know what happens next!

Darkness Betrayed By Christine Hughes
Even the devil was once an angel...
Still reeling from a devastating betrayal, and a shaky relationship with Ethan, her Guardian Angel, Samantha reluctantly seeks comfort with Damien - the original fallen, the devil whispered about and part of the original deception of Adam and Eve. She learns of the real reason for his existence – a sad and twisted reason that would force even the most ardent Bible thumpers to show sympathy. He agrees to help Samantha fight Sebastian but what she doesn't know is there is a price for Damien's involvement. A price she would never allow. The only problem is, she isn't the one making the sale...

SO i won this book just to let you know...=)

I was given this book by Lovers of Paranormal (Goodreads) in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed this story very much. Ms. Hughes has created original characters and an interesting premise on which to base them. And I love, love, LOVE the concept of balance! So many novelists strive for the formulaic good-defeats-evil plotline, but that is not the case here, and it makes this series very refreshing for me.

There is a slow build up of emotional turmoil for Sam, and a heartbreaking twist at the end. I need to read the next book! This cannot be the way things end for Sam, Ethan and the rest.

That being said, I thought that some of the language and behavior was pretty edgy for a group of angels who are trying to earn their way to redemption. I certainly wouldn't expect perfection, because, being FALLEN angels, they are NOT perfect. But they just seem to accept these things as a matter of course, rather than an imperfection to overcome. Just something to consider- why wouldn't God expect ALL of his children - human or angel - to follow His commandments? If they really want to find themselves worthy of salvation, why would they not be striving to live the way He asks us to live?

Just a little food for thought.

I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book. I struggled a bit inn the beginning, because I couldn't remember a lot from Torn (I have a horrible memory). Anyway. I enjoyed it, once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The writing was great, the details were superb.

Loved the characters, the new and the old. Sam got on my nerves, again. Granted, she was thrown into all this, had no clue of anything, but by book 2, she needs to GROW UP! Her constant whining and woe is me crap is really annoying. It's for that reason only, I couldn't give this book 5 stars. Other than that, I loved it.

I did feel somewhat bad for Sam, as she battled with the dark and light. It was frustrating how easily she flew to Damien's side without hesitation. She just refused to see the truth, despite everyone trying to talk to her and make her see.

This book has more romance, and not with who you'd expect either. There is betrayal, AGAIN! And UGH does it suck!

I mostly felt bad for Ethan. Man, he tries and tries and Sam just acts like a petulant child. And she realizes the truth way to late, after the damage is done between them. Not sure what the next book holds for them, but I can't wait to find out.

"Darkness Betrayed" by Christine Hughes is a sequel that in my opinion even surpasses the great first part in the series.
Samantha, our unlikely heroine, still comes to terms with betrayal, hurt and anger, but continues to train hard in order to become stronger for a battle with Sebastian and his followers - a battle that is sure to come.
An unlikely ally comes in form of Damian, the devil.
I am not a very religious person and the existence of Guardian Angels and demons in books often makes me uncomfortable. Hughes however has created an excellent character in Damien, an ambiguous figure, a fallen angel whose existence and character are multi-dimensional and who teaches Samantha and us a lot about the principles of good and bad, darkness and light.
In a manner of an interpretation or reading of some Bible stories, like Adam and Eve, the book creates an excellent scene for the battling forces. The principles that Damien explains are fascinating and add a lot of depth to the story.
The chemsitry between Samantha and Damien is excellent, both are great characters that drive the plot nicely and perfectly paced.
The book is also, and not just secondary to the above, a great paranormal adventure story.
An excellent and recommended read.

Would you make a deal with the devil? The devil is cunning, manipulative, and yet, very delicious and hard to resist! I was up almost all night, glued to this book and these kick ass characters!
Wow, Samantha really goes through a lot of emotional trauma that left me feeling like I was right there fighting with her. I had as many feelings running through my head as Sam did. This story is extremely addicting and very hard to put down. I think this is by far my favorite story by this author that I have read. This book will leave you speechless and craving for more as you get caught up in the story line. I highly recommend this enchanted story full of so many twists and turns and one surprising end that will leave wanting more. I was sucked in from beginning to end and was reeled in so tightly in my roller coaster that I wasn't ready for it to end! Another great story from an amazing author.

Another great book from Christine. There are some decisions that Sam makes that I don't agree with, but I'm one of those who tends to go with her heart vs. her head a lot just because i'm an emotional individual. It's just who I am. So I get her. Damien was a great person to read about but he did remind me of a few other characters I've read in other series so it was hard to keep those stories out of my brain while I was reading.

Again, I love how she makes you question commonly accepted biblical concepts and not shying away from them. And you don't feel preached to

There were pieces I loved..some I hated, but if an author can get me to feel so strongly either direction, then she/he has done their job very well. Even stories I have hated kept me engaged enough to finish. Thankfully I didn't hate this! I can't wait to read more from her in the future!

After reading Torn (book one) I was dying to know what happened next! I must say that Christine did not disappoint and I am now dying to know what happens in book three!

So many questions were answered, but so many more came along. Samantha drove me absolutely crazy in this book, I kept wanting to smack her or shake her. She needs to grow up and stop whining and being selfish. I hope that she will learn that her choices have consequences and effect people other than herself. This book sent me threw so many emotions from anger to sadness. I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends!

Ms. Hughes has written another captivating story with characters that compel you to crawl into the Kindle.
Some - you'll want to console.
Some - you'll want to slap.
Some - you'll want to lick. (Yes, I have my favorite.)
Any way you look at it, Hughes is a phenomenal world builder and she makes the reader a part of the world she creates. It's almost like she's controlling a puppet; she has this fascinating ability to make a reader continue turning the pages a at a rapid pace to learn what happens next.
I applaud Hughes on another job well done and I recommend both Torn and Darkness Betrayed. Bravo! 5+ stars!

Darkness Betrayed is the second book in the Torn series by Christine Hughes, and as the title of my review suggests, it is the heart who feels betrayed. Not just the readers, but heroine Samantha.

The book continues from straight on from Torn, as Samantha is left with mixed feelings regarding her friend, Lucas, and love interest, Ethan. Enter into the mix Damien - the original fallen angel, and her whole road is rocked left, right, and centre. A powerhouse of a read, it plays on the heart strings and has you fighting the side of the light, and finding your own balance.

I can't wait for the third book - what a cliffhanger!

I received a copy of Darkness Betreayed in exchange for an honest review. I really wanted to love this book, but the characters just wouldn't let me do it which is why I gave it 3 stars. It was a great story but the main character just ruined it for me. Sam drove me absolutely crazy when I was reading this book. Half the time when I was reading the book I wanted to smack her for always taking the easy way out of everything and her constant whining. Even though this book drove me crazy at times I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see what will happen next.

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review.

What a fantastic book. I had read the first one and was eager to read this one as well.
We find Sam still battling to control the light and dark within her. She finds making decisions extremely hard. Lucas returning and the appearance of Damien doesn't help any either.
She continues to train and finally faces Sebastian and win's. Although she is betrayed by Damien.
I can't believe how the book ended and can't wait to read the next one.

I enjoyed this book. I did fine Sam too whiney and self centered, but I guess that is the point of her character. When she is strong she is amazing. I love all the character in the book. I was in tears when Ethan had to leave and the fact that she didn't chose him broke my heart. Lucas won me back over in this book I am glad that him and Sam seem on there way back to being friends. I am interested in seeing where the characters go from here. What is Sam going to do when she gets her memories back and will she be able to find a way to save Ethan?

I enjoyed reading this book. The sequel to the novel Torn, Darkness Betrayed is a book with a broad spectrum of emotional conflicts- ranging from the return of a friend who betrayed her and her family, to being deceived by the Devil himself, to losing the one person who truly love her no matter what... All while guarding the pendant of hope and learning to balance the Darkness and the Light. I had fun learning more about Samantha and her life. Thanks, Christine!
