The Line That Binds #2

The Line That Breaks

Rate this book
*This is the followup to The Line That Binds*

While searching for answers involving Stockton Estate's stone well, Ben Shadows and LJ Wayde discover one truth: the curse is real.

Unfortunately, that truth has LJ facing the same fate that's been tied to her bloodline for generations. The curse has given her the ability to help others conquer their greatest weaknesses, but it comes with a torturous price. As the rush of helping people starts to outweigh the pain of the consequences, LJ moves toward acceptance. She considers it a gift, a chance to make up for the way she treated people in the past.

Ben pushes on to find an end to the curse despite LJ's reluctance. He fears the real consequences are far worse than LJ's current symptoms, possibly linked to her Aunt Janine's memory loss. His love drives his need to protect her, even if it means hiding the next piece of the well's mystery.

When LJ finds what Ben has kept secret, she may never forgive him.

Will he lose her heart before he can save her mind?

**Recommended mature YA for mild language and mild sexual content.**

I remember liking the first one more. They kept going on about how much they love each other but they don’t really give a solid reason why except for their mutual phyisical attraction. And that got a bit repetitive. Although, it has been a loooong time since I read the first one so I could just be remembering it wrong.

One thing I did not like was how stubborn LJ was when she found out this ‘secret’ Ben had. I didn’t feel the secret was that large to elicit such of a response from her. I felt she overreacted and I found her to be kinda whiny this time around.

Ben was sweet to LJ and attentive to her needs, especially when things started to go downhill for her. I can’t really go into that more without spoilers so I’ll have to just leave it at that. But his willingness to sacrifice for her was incredibly endearing.

Great ending if a bit of info dumping. I did like how there was no tangible bad guy but a past that literally haunts them. It was a bit of a trip to not see a big bad vanquished. The end was neat and tidy. I’d read more from this author.

I liked the first book in this series, but this one just bored me.

I got sick of Ben and LJ fighting in this book. I was a little surprised at
I didn’t think enough was made about finding the stones, and the way this ended irritated me too.

I don’t mean to be rude to the author, the book was well written, and the ideas had merit, it just didn’t do it for me. I can’t say I’m in the best reading mood at the moment, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I just didn’t enjoy this.

The Line That Breaks by J.M. Miller is the sequel to The Line That Binds, which was a surprising young adult paranormal novel that left me wanting more. In this final installment of the series (which contained only these two books), we finally start getting some answers, while also seeing the toll that the curse takes on LJ’s relationship. At the risk of spoiling too much for future readers of the series, I will try to be vague while letting you know why this might be the next series you should read (I love this series, seriously!)

One of the fun aspects of this series is the narrative. The reader gets to see the story from both Ben and LJ’s perspective, which I always find to be the best way of introducing the main characters. I like knowing that all bases are covered when it comes to a story, so having two voices instead of one limited first person narrative always makes for a fun read.

Keeping that in mind, I have to say that I definitely liked Ben’s narrative more in this installment than LJ’s. Though LJ’s situation is understandable, I still found her take on the situations around her to be a bit dramatic. There were instances where I didn’t even want to read her side of the story because she was so frustrating. I remember that there was one instant where she admitted that her love interest (will not ruin this one!!!) didn’t have a right to feel heartbroken, because only she should feel hurt. That made me cringe because what does it say about her character when she is unable to empathize with someone that she supposedly cares about. Yes, I get that she is hurt and is in a pretty dire situation, but still, that was pretty bad.

What I remember liking from the first book is how down to Earth the whole paranormal aspect was. This sequel didn’t disappoint, since it still kept some semblance of simplicity that other over-the-top paranormal novels lack. It allowed me, a lover of contemporary fiction, to connect with the simpler side of the story without feeling overwhelmed by the paranormal moments. Plus, I understand LJ’s plight to do good, even if in the end it could be her downfall.

I honestly thought there would be more books in this series, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was the final installment. I’m not a lover of drawn out series, especially when they can be completed in one or two books, so I was a huge fan of Miller’s ability to complete the series in only two books. The pacing of the book was great, making this a pretty quick read.

I recommend this series to fans of low-key paranormal romances, especially if you like your romantic stories extra cute!

The Line That Breaks is the second and final book in the series and having read the first only hours before starting this book, I have to say it is just as good. It start a little ways from the ending of the first book, don't worry you don't miss out on any of the juicy bits, with LJ and Ben struggling to find out more about the curse and how to break it. We also learn a few new things about the curse in this book, though you may have guessed some of them already.

LJ and Ben's relationship hits a lot of rough spots in this book, and while in some cases I feel that there's a ridiculous overreaction, the relationship always feels real. I don't agree with some of the things LJ does but her constantly putting others first is somethign I definitely agree with and the fact that even though her life's been rough she still able to give so much of herself to help others really endears her as a character. Ben too, is such a sweet and lovable guy. In fact this book is filled with awesome, lovable characters, even some of the not-so-great people redeem themselves somewhat. Except Emily, never Emily.

I thought the pacing in this book was great right up to the end where everything seemed to rush together. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the ending, but it just felt like everything unravelled too fast, like when you drop a ball of wool and it unravels completely before you can blink. It may have just seemed that way to me because I was getting really tired by that stage (1am does not make for great reading time, but I had to finish the book!) but I would've liked more of a slow build-up like the rest of the story was. This is just a minor thing, and I still really enjoyed everything about the book!

Figuring out the secrets of this curse is not easy and pretty much everyone is pushed to breaking point at one stage or another, which is what makes this book so great. It's not just an easy here-are-all-the-answers quest, Ben and LJ struggle to make sense of what is happening and to find out how they can fix things. This is not an action-packed book but since even the 'boring' bits of the story are engaging, you don't notice at all. If you read the first book then what are you waiting for, and if you haven't read the first book then you should get on it right away! A really great, quick, 2-book series that I thoroughly enjoyed!

The Line That Breaks is the sequel to The Line That Binds. If you have not read the first book, please read my review here and one click it! It is sure to keep you entertained!

The Line That Breaks picks up right where the The Line That Binds ends. LJ and Ben are searching for clues to find a cure or more information on the curse that has found its way to LJ. As you remember, she is able to hear people’s wishes and grant them when she touches their skin. This storyline is really unique for me. I have read a lot of paranormal books and they always include some sort of supernatural being or creature (I love a good vampire or werewolf!), but this story doesn’t have any of that and it was really refreshing.

LJ is a really great character that struggles with acceptance and the curse in general. She does piss me off occasionally with her stubbornness, but probably only because I see the other POV. I love the fact that LJ knows when to fight her battles and when to let it go with other people, like Emily. I love her interactions with Ben and the love she has for him. My heart also breaks for her because she does some pretty self-destructive things with good intentions. LJ hasn’t had the easiest life but she still wants to help others. How can you not love that about someone?!

Ben is desperate to find the solution to this curse and protect LJ at all costs. I love hearing things from his POV since the story is told from both perspectives. My heart crushed in the first book when you discovered the reason for his heart ache, his girlfriend, Harper’s death. But I can see in TLTB2 that as much as he loved Harper, his love for LJ is even greater. It rips his heart out to see her in so much torment and something’s that he does, although with good intentions, end up making things worse for everyone. I am really glad that Pop, his grandfather finally pulled his head out of his ass.

Will they find out the secrets they have been searching for? Or will LJ end up losing in this battle? Can the love Ben and LJ share really last through the turmoil? One click this book today! You won’t regret it! Great job J.M. Miller! It was a perfect ending for an awesome series!

What a roller coaster ride. JM Miller follows up The Line That Binds flawlessly. It seems like she cranked everything up from the characters, emotions, and plot. It is an awesome follow up that you don’t want to miss. I’m going to stop here and say that if you have not read The Line That Binds, you need to stop reading this review as it will contain slight spoilers.

This book picks up about a month after the 1st book ends. Ben and LJ are together, and they are done searching the basement for clues regarding the curse. Unfortunately their search continues. The author does a wonderful job at bringing not only Ben and LJ to life, but all the characters. Each one has a distinct personality, and you feel like you really get to know them. As far as friends go, Spaz and Iz are a hoot. I really enjoyed them. We see glimpses of Gavin’s maturity, even though he is so young. He tries to step out of the little brother role at times and wants to look out for LJ.

I got so invested in these characters. Their heartbreak, worry, joy, love, determination, and everything else they went through became my own. And as pervy as it makes me feel (thanks for that JM, LOL) I have a new BBF in Ben Shadows. *sigh* I am fully aware that he is only 18, but back off birches…for real. He is so swoon worthy. He always knows what LJ needs and is always there for her. I love how he is always careful and considerate with her, but he is not overbearing. He is the right amount of everything. Oh and the sweet things he says to her. Melts. My. Heart.

The story is packed full of emotion. You have both Ben and LJ trying to protect the other from the curse. Did I get frustrated with them from time to time? Heck yeah I did. BUT, they are such a sweet couple and everything they do for each other is out of love. What a deep, enduring love it is.

To be honest, I was a bit sad when I finished the last page. I just didn’t want to let go of these characters. Just thinking about their story now makes my heart ache a little. This is definitely a series that I will have no problem reading over and over. What are you waiting for? Go pick up your copy now and experience Ben and LJ’s journey for yourself.

Let me just say that this is one book that I have been waiting for. JM. Miller had me wanting to pull my hair out at the end of the first book The Line That Binds because I wanted to know what happened right then and there, but I had to wait patiently (well not so much) for The Line That Breaks. Well one thing I will say is JM Miller did not disappoint at all.

We pick right up where The Line That Binds leaves off. LJ and Ben are still searching for clues to break the curse that was put on LJ’s family so long ago. Ben and LJ have completely fallen in love and Ben’s biggest fear is that LJ will continue granting wishes for everyone an she will not remember him. LJ has accepted her fate though and decides to give in to the curse when their searches are not turning up anything that is helping them. Now the big catch is that LJ’s mom shows back up and of course dampens her mood even further. But from the time she showed back up to the end Miller has you wondering what she is really there for. And that is one thing I love.

Throughout this book you see the characters struggle with what is going on and it keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering if LJ and Ben will get there happy ending and find the cure to this curse or will LJ suffer the same fate as the members of her family before her did. You wonder if Ben will be able to save LJ and show her just how much he loves her. The Line That Breaks is definitely a one click book. JM Miller you done and amazing job with this series.

Wow, this book definitely did not disappoint. In fact, it took my breath away. I was instantly hooked by the first book, The Line that Binds, and I was even more entranced by this one!

I won't say much about the plot, but the story takes right after the last book. Ben and LJ are now a couple and they are still trying to find the missing stones to stop the curse. The curse starts to take effect on LJ, and as she grants more people's wishes, her memory loss worsens. The curse also takes a toll on LJ and Ben's relationship.

But, what I want to highlight is the characters: LJ and Ben. I love LJ. And I love Ben. I love LJ's good heart and kindness. I love Ben's sweetness and him being protective and considerate. And I love the sacrifices and compromises that these characters make for each other.

Their young love is really sweet; and so pure and raw. These are teenagers who had to grow up and mature quickly because of family issues and trauma that have happened in their lives. Ben and LJ are so great for each other and I love their chemistry.

J.M. Miller really does a wonderful job of making you feel empathetic towards LJ and Ben; I felt like I knew them and this book really touched me!

The ending was so perfect! The series ended on a great and uplifting note! I'm glad LJ and Ben will be happy forever and got their wish! ;)

I enjoy J.M. Miller's writing and will so be looking forward to more of her work!!

WOW!

Here's me thinking that nothing could of been better than the first, BUT HOLY SHIT WAS I WRONG!

This was another great read, suspense filled, nail biting, love infested mystery, that grips the reader from the very beginning and doesn't let go....a bit like the curse that's rooted itself nicely within LJ.

Unfortunately LJ & Ben's search continues for the cure to this hideous curse. It's starting to show its ugly face now and poor LJ is paying the price?

How much more than this poor girl be put through?

What was Dahlia thinking when she cursed the Stockton bloodline?

Ohhh my lord and the lovely dashing Ben Shadows....He always knows what LJ needs and is always there for her. I love how he is always careful and considerate with her, but he is not overbearing....SWOON!

The story is packed full of emotion. You have both Ben and LJ trying to protect the other from the curse

At times I were peeved off with the pair of them....don't they get it.....they need one another to get over this, they need one another to find a cure.....they just basically need one another!

Will they find out the secrets they have been searching for?

Or will LJ end up losing in this battle?

I was both happy and sad when their amazing story came to an end., but I fear not, for I'm sure Miller has some fan-fricking-tastic novels in the pipework and I will be readily waiting for them!

A really great ending to this two book series. I loved reading this book and getting to know the main characters better. Ben and LJ were great but I think I also saw a lot more of Gavin, Carson, Spaz and Izzy in this book too. The story was romantic, funny and suspenseful all at the same time. The characters were all very real and their thoughts and feelings were clearly expressed. Ben and LJ were fantastic together and my heart broke for both of them throughout this story. I loved the unique creativity of the curse on LJ's family - being forced to grant the wishes of others at the expense of your own memories? It was an intriguing concept and I liked the way the author weaved this thrilling and suspenseful story about a curse into an epic romance about a love that lasts across generations. Overall - this was a really great read that I was thoroughly impressed with. I'd recommend both books in this series if you are a fan of paranormal romance and are looking for something unique. Think part ghost story (but no ghost), part paranormal (but no traditional creatures or superpowers), part thriller flick (but with no knife-wielding slashers or stalkers hiding in the bushes), part teen angsty drama (boys do fight over girls), and finally - lots of really sweet romantic moments to fill in all the gaps. It's a great series that I didn't want to stop reading.

This novel kept me turning pages from start to finish. I read the whole thing in just a couple of hours. I thought the first book started out a little slow I was expecting much the same for this one. However I was so glad to be wrong. This book is amazingly written. A Line That Breaks starts off Shortly after where A LIne That Binds ends. I couldn't wait to read this to find out what happens with the curse and it just jumps head first into how LJ and Ben rush against time to figure out before LJ suffers the same fate as her aunt.

To watch the struggle with LJ with her desire to help people but to know if she does what it could mean for her is heartbreaking. She wants to do the right thing even if that means separating herself from everyone she loves just to save them from what is happening to her.

It is also heartbreaking to read how Ben struggles with wanting to keep LJ safe but she keeps pushing him away to protect him and he can't find the answers her needs to save her.

This is a perfect story of love conquering all and the fight and heartache you sometimes have to go through to make that happen.

There's nothing I love more than a paranormal YA novel, and thankfully, those are not in short supply. What IS in short supply is something new - a different type of paranormal that's not about vampires, werewolves, fairies (all things I love) - well thankfully Miller's helping me out there. I read The Line That Binds (the 1st book in the series) earlier this year and was intrigued from the very beginning. The follow-up and conclusion was exactly the same way. You have two fantastic characters that you root for and - if you're anything like me - yell at when you think they're making the wrong decision or being generally stupid (but if characters didn't do dumb things, then there'd be no story, would there?!).

Miller also managed to provide closure to the story and the characters - something even famous authors with movie deals have left me very disgruntled over. The last few chapters are gripping, but you're rewarded with an ending that allows you to let go of the characters you've grown so fond of, while making you wish you knew when Miller's next book is coming out.

All in all, it's a great series with a fresh look at "paranormal" - one you won't regret buying!

This book begins about a month after the first book ended. LJ and Ben are still trying to search for the missing well pieces. And the family curse is causing LJ headaches, nosebleeds and all around misery. Ben is her lifeline, her comfort and her love. LJ is mostly in the dark about the curse, but when she learns the truth it may be too much for her relationship with Ben to bear.
Book two has us wondering if they will uncover the truth about the curse and if Ben and LJ will last when the truth is discovered. This one did have more of a paranormal element than the first, but it still seems like the side story and not the focus through most of the book. Though that didn’t detract from the great story told in these books. I really love the story of young love and I was just as fearful as Ben at the thought that they might not end up together. I have really enjoyed reading both The Line that Binds and The Line That Breaks. I give this one 4 stars! Great love story with a paranormal twist!

I read both The Line That Binds and The Line That Breaks in less than 48 hours. They are gripping and just fun. Author J.M. Miller adds a breath of fresh air to the supernatural YA genre without turning to ubiquitous vampires, witches, wizards, and other paranormal favorites. Her writing deftly combines poetic elements with crisp, realistic prose, creating an assuming foundation for a story of modern-day teens plagued by a historical curse that threatens to take away everything that means anything to them. Though the ending was slightly predictable, a little rushed, and resolved too easily, the investment I had built in the characters overshadowed all that - except maybe the rushed aspect. I wanted more! To any readers who enjoy paranormal romance, historical fiction, or mystery, The Line That Binds and The Line That Breaks are treats you don't want to miss.

The perfect sequel.

This book is even more addictive that the previous one. J.M. has for sure done a brilliant job and outdid herself.

Throughout the book the story kept me on edge and reading fast to see what will happen next.

LJ and Ben are both strong and lovable characters, very well crafted. They both love each other and that love is just growing and getting stronger. They both struggle with some things that they have to overcome.

Original storyline, captivating writing style and amazing breath of fresh air.

This was a beautifully told story. I fell in love with Ben and LJ's story in the first book and this picks right back up. LJ and Ben are still looking for answers about the Stockton curse. He sees her slipping away but how he ended up supporting her was just a beautiful thing to see. I was easily swooning over him (again). There were many emotions, times when I hated them both but more times when I adored LJ's strength and Ben's devotion. I was both happy and sad when their amazing story came to an end. I will miss these characters but JM Miller is so talented I know there is more greatness to come.

This book is about a curse that is placed on a family after a broken heart. Lj and Ben receive parts of an estate when they turn 18. Lj also inherits the family curse.
It's a great read. The story moves along quickly and fluently. It grabs you so that you want to know more about the curse itself. And, this is a series that leaves you wondering what happens next. I want to know what happens anyway! Do they beat the curse? Or, are they beaten?

This was an okay read, but I lost interest.

I really liked LJ and Ben in the first book, but they annoyed me in this one.

The pacing in this one was slow, and the story just couldn't keep my interest unfortunately.

Overall, Not awful, but couldn't keep my interest.

Really found LJ annoying. I enjoyed the first book but the second dragged. The storyline was weak - we re supposed to believe that was the answer to the curse all along? Nothing really happens except more of the same.

But most importantly, skimmed through all the relationship angst because urgh, are they annoying. Didn't buy why she would continue to grant wishes knowing the consequences.. she doesn't listen, just runs away or throws tantrums.. and as for Ben, the reasons for his behaviors just don't make sense. The characters seem.. superficial to me. Not fleshed out.

Need to read something else now to wash my mind. It's not the worst, but it doesn't satisfy.

A cursed read!

When she finds what he has kept secret, she may never forgive him...
Will he lose her heart before he can save her mind?

Holy hell! This book is more intense than the first one as the race to find out how to end the curse is at full speed. Through heartbreak and love, finally things fall into place after much pain.

I really love this book so much. This series, really. I wish we could get a novella of what happens after that epilogue! Would love to see a glimpse of THAT wedding.

Full of heartache, pain, loss, curses, family, memories and romance.

Perfect for readers of paranormal romances.

I RECEIVED A BOX SET IN EXCHAGE OF A HONEST REVIEW!

*I'm going to do the review of the two books in this one thread, later they happily will go to each thread to the respective book*

To start , I'm not a fan of Paranormal Young Adult Books... there are some books I happily read if they're paranormal and only if they catch my attention, but they're not my favorite. Fortunately, I saw the blurb of these and damn, I wanted them really fast!!

This book is about LJ who is a young girl, related to a family that have a blood curse (because is with the members of the family that the curse is activated), her family have to move to the Old Historical House of her aunt, and that's when we meet Ben Shadows, this young handsome boy who was the housekeeper with his grandfther, due to the dead of her aunt, and the lost of her dad's job in Las Vegas, they had to live there.

Ben is worried because they don't know, what are the plans that have LJ's family with the house, and also for the curse that lies between the old walls of the house...

In the firt book, we can see the interaction, the lovely interaction between LJ and Ben, the begginings of the curse, and how they start to hold onto each others backs to survive, the found a conection, so beautiful, that they don't want to end it.

In the second book, we see more and the effects of the curse in LJ's life, is heartbreaking and beautiful to see Ben by her side, trying to help her no matter what. And also see how these characters grow, to show us the strongest parts of them, with this curse that is threatening to destroy their lifes.

Is a unique style, and had some unexpected things, that I couldn't help but love these books! Is different and is beautiful, maybe I don't have enough words to say how excited I was at the end, because let me tell you something... J.M. did an incredible job with this book, and if you like paranormal you should at this to your TBR and find an amazing world in these books.

I immediately started this after finishing book one and I devoured it. I couldn't put it down. Along with the characters, I wanted to know more about the curse, I wanted to know if there was a way to break it.

Things are not getting better for LJ, the curse is affecting her more and more each day, with each wish she grants but she can't stop herself from making others happy. I admit, I wanted to shake her for this, because she was not helping the situation.

Ben's desperate to find a way to stop the curse from doing what it did to LJ's Aunt Janine, but it's hard when you know next to nothing about the curse, how and why it was caused.

The saying, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" fits this book perfectly. Because love can make or break someone.

I was on the edge of my seat and my heart broke for these kids, for their struggle to stay together when everything was falling apart.

And literally, toward the end of the book, help comes from the most unexpected person and ah, what they find out made me want to jump up and down, because OF COURSE! But I have to admit, I didn't see it coming.

So, if you're into mysteries and cursed wells, secrets and YA, you should totally give these books a try. I'm definitely going to reread them both.

5 stars. No extra comments, words needed.

I really enjoyed this book (and series). They are about young kids in high school, but had a nice story line... suspense and mystery with a little supernatural. If I was 16 I would be all over Ben (the main character) like white on rice! ;) Just saying! Nothing too dirty in these, mostly just suggests what is happening with out details. I would recommend these. I could not put them down

A great ending to a captivating series

Book 2 finds LJ and Ben still looking for the missing stones and any information on the curse. LJ continues to grant wishes not truly understanding the costs. Added stress of her mom returning and her dad dating isn't helping. Can they all find the answers in time? This book had me hooked from the first page.

A Little Dissappointed

I read the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The 2nd book spent way too much time on the make-out sessions. How many times do you have to repeat it?
It got to be quite annoying....! I was just wishing that the author would get on with the story

I loved every minute of this book! Characters are well written and very likeable. Full of twists and turns. Unrequited love and everlasting love. I highly recommend this series! Hold on tight and enjoy the ride that is sure to come from the absolutely wonderful book!
