Wow, for a quick read I really, really enjoyed 'The One' and I would definitely have been extremely happy if it was longer.

We meet Jordan as he is embarking on his life as a professional NFL player, however, that dream is shattered at the end of chapter one where you are left with an 'OMG' factor. Due to a family tragedy Jordan is called home to the family cattle ranch where his world crumbles around him. With his dad having passed away many years earlier and the current family situation, Jordan has to take over the running of the ranch and all the issues that come with it, losing his dream, friends and fiancé in the process.

Abby is homeless having been left by her boyfriend in a dingy motel with basically no possessions, and her wealthy, political family has disowned her. She has attitude but has no choice when Jordan offers her a place to stay and food in exchange for helping on the ranch.

What starts as a very strained friendship, slowly but surely develops into more and once these two finally give into the attraction their relationship blossoms. While Jordan is very tender and protective, he sometimes finds it hard to communicate due to his recent lack of socialisation. Abby has attitude and can be quirky, she doesn't take any crap but at times I couldn't stand the way she acted towards Jordan.

Together they deal with the issues at the ranch, some bigger than others but the mystery of Abby's past still hangs over them, that is until it comes crashing back into the lives full force. The couple are separated by the powerful and evil forces from Abby's past until Jordan decides that he will fight for them and they both risk everything to be together.

The epilogue was fantastic and wrapped the story up beautifully.
This was a great story of love grown from friendship between two people searching for something to make their lives worthwhile.
'The One' was a quick read that I highly recommend.

This was a story of loss and finding yourself afterward. Learning the difference between existing and truly living. Two powerfully written characters Jordan and Abby pushed together at the worst points of their lives.

Jordan Brooks the rock that kept his family together, even as he began his professional football career with the San Francisco 49ers. Until he got that fateful call from his mother that sent his life in a tailspin.

“Mom, for God’s sake. Stop fucking crying so I can understand you! Let me fix your problem so I can get back to my own life!!!”
“Jordan, your sister was killed last night.” ~Jordan finding out his whole life was about to change

At first Jordan seems like a complete selfish man who is too immature to even worry or care about anyone but himself. But he creeps into your heart as he leaves his dream behind and returns to Montana to take over his families 7,000 acre ranch, Wild Brook Ranch.
Caring for his catatonic mother and a ranch with a minimal amount of ranch hands, Jordan gains respect. He will worm his way into your heart as a nice boy next door. He is even respectful to a homeless girl, he takes in giving her a room and board in exchange for working on the ranch. (Hint: the homeless girl is Abby.)

Abigail Dunn or Abby to her friends is the daughter of Bradford Dunn a senator in Texas that is up for re-election. Her mother Jean, is the typical trophy wife. She stands silently by and watches without any ability to do anything. At twenty years old Abby had done everything her parents had ever asked until she started dating Tyler.

She and Tyler would spend ‘dates’ locked in his bedroom at the apartment he shared with two other guys, screwing like bunnies. There were a handful of times that Tyler would let one of his roommates join in the action. Abby was a complete nympho.

Against her father’s wishes, Abby takes off on a road trip with Tyler. After Senator Dunn cuts Abby off Tyler takes all of her money, her car and leaves her stranded. At first you will feel like well this little rich girl got what she deserved, then you see there is so much more to her.
Her character developes and you see her go from spoiled rich girl to frighted homeless girl to hard working ranch hand and woman. Seeing her journey is very special.

These two characters have known great loss, but they are able to pick themselves up, dust off and keep going. This is a wonderfully written story and worth every moment spent reading it. It gives hope that everyone has their ‘One’ out there.

What would you do if everyone you thought loved you suddenly didn’t want you around any more. Thats what happened with the two characters from The One. Jordan just started his career as a professional football player. He has it all, the fame, the friends and the fiance. But when he has to drop it all to go back home and run the family ranch he realizes that everyone he thought he was important to was only in it for his position. Abby has lived her whole life living up to the image she political family wants her to portray. She is sick and tired of it and decides to live her own life the way she wants. Since her parents don’t approve of the life she wants or the boy she is dating they disown her. As if thats not bad enough when her boyfriend learns of it and that she won’t be getting daddy’s money anymore he leaves her in the middle of nowhere with nothing but the clothes on her back. The two come together when Jordan finds her sleeping in a car at the feed store. He offers her a job in exchange for room and board.

Abby is all new to the ranch life being from the big city, and Jordan isn’t too used to dealing with other people since he has been isolated out on the ranch. Jordan is a little short with his attitude and Abby is a firecracker put those two personalities together and there is going to be sparks. At first there are some pretty heated arguments and hurt feelings but as the two learn to take the other into consideration they start to feel more than anger with each other and the sparks turn into a raging inferno.

I really liked this book. The author did a great job of creating characters that you can relate to. They were very realistic in their attitudes with the situation they were put in. Of course the smokin’ hot smexy scenes didn’t hurt ;-) I would def recommend this book to anyone !

This is another wonderful book from Hazel St. James.

I love the characters that she creates in this book. They are very believable, going through their own tragedies they find each other. Moving slowly, becoming friends and having that grow into much more as they work through their issues together.

Jordan Brooks has been very blessed in his life. Growing up on a large profitable ranch, then going to college, playing football and going pro, he had it made. Then his father passed away and his life crumbled. Mixed up with friends and a girlfriend that took advantage of him, a mother that needed his input on everything, a little sister in need of guidance and a family ranch that was failing due to poor decisions. He was managing things from away until his sister was killed. His life was turned upside down.

Abby Dunn it appeared grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth. A spoiled rich girl, that always did as she was told, until she got mixed up with a bad boy. She defied her parents and ran off with him. Captivated by sex and the idea of being loved she had her world shattered when her parents cut off her finances. The guy ran out leaving her with only a little money and the clothes on her back. Her parents would take her calls and wouldn't send money to help her come home.

Jordan runs across the homeless Abby looking for a job. He hires her on at the ranch wanting to help and protect her, but thinking it will be good for his Mom too. Soon they both felt an attraction toward each other, but due to past experiences fought it and ended up fighting. It took quite a while to open up and get past their issues.

Great read, looking forward to reading the sequel from Abby's point of view.

3.5 rounded up to 4. I've had a lot of luck lately with cowboy stories and this was another good one. He gives up an NFL career to go home and take care of the family's ranch after his sister dies and his Mom goes off the deep end.

She's a spoiled daughter of a Texas senator that went off with a guy for adventure and got ditched when her family disowned her and the guy wasn't interested in an adventure with a poor girl. She becomes destitute, living in a car and is rescued by the cowboy and given a job on the family ranch.

It takes awhile but a really nice friendship/love develops but then she goes home to try and reestablish a relationship with her family and she never returns. Cowboy to the rescue.

The ending was a little out the blue, but all's well that ends well, and this one ended well.

Wow! Another sexy read from Hazel St James, I love her stories. Great characters, well Jordan and Abby that's for sure, I wanted to slap her and his ex. Love Abby and Jordan together, I loved how he saved her and took her in, helped her out what a great guy and sexy as hell too. Abby is a strong willed spitfire and once she gives herself to Jordan watch out its forever. Great stormy sexy as hell sex scenes and very romantic in a prince and princess sort of way. Love Javier too so smart for kicking Jordan in this ass. Wanted to slap the senator too. Love Gus what a great guy. Alot going on with Jordan's family and all the shitheads they have to deal with but when love comes around you have to grab it...Another great on by Hazel St James. 4.5 stars

Jordan and Abby are great for eachother once they learn to communicate that is. Both characters are stubborn, strong, and caring. I love the setting and circumstances in this book, both Jordan and Abby have been through a lot but somehow they kept hope.

I read this in one sitting while I probably should have been sleeping but it kept me engaged enough that I had to keep turning the pages. There are characters I loved and hated and also those I could relate to. Depth and emotion were not lacking in this short story, I found it to be an interesting read.

Hazel St. James has created characters you can't help but care about and root for. Jordan and Abby both have been through the wringer, literally and figuratively.

Each are searching for something, anything, to give them purpose and they happen to find each other at a point in their lives when they have nothing to hope for.

They build a friendship, trust and eventually a romance, while overcoming obstacles set in their path.
