Very good book as the tension for the Mission Recovery team increases. Jason is on assignment in Las Vegas as he waits to make contact with another agent. The last thing he remembered was having a drink that a lady had bought for him. Now he's woken up with a ring on his finger and in bed with Gin Olin. Gin in there to track a vial of a deadly virus that's due to be sold on the black market. When she saw Jason acting strangely at the same time she needed some cover she used him to provide that cover. She and Jason then agreed to maintain the illusion in order to find out who was targeting Jason and to help her with her mission. Neither of them expected the attraction between them or the growing desire to make their Vegas marriage a real one.
I really liked both Gin and Jason. Gin is used to working alone, but she needed some help fast when she was spotted by the man who had the virus she was tracking. She recognized Jason and thought he'd be perfect to help her. But when she reached him he was behaving in an uncharacteristic way. She soon realized that he'd been drugged so it was up to her to save them both. I loved her method which ended up with them married to each other. Once Jason had recovered they realized they could help each other. Gin's mission of tracking the virus was fairly simple, which enabled her to spend time with Jason while they figured out what was going on. I loved the way that she took charge while Jason was out of it. The next morning was fun as she teased him about their wedding, but also pretty intense as they were attacked and had to try to find out why. I liked seeing Gin be her usual capable self while at the same time dealing with Jason's growing protectiveness. Thanks to the stress of their situation Gin feels her attraction to Jason growing stronger, but she knows better than to fall for another operative. I loved seeing her internal struggle as she fought her feelings. I also liked the way that she saw that he was being set up sooner than he did. The two of them worked together very well as they escaped several potentially deadly situations. Her part in the ending was fantastic.
Jason was a little confused about his mission. It is very unusual to be sent somewhere just to wait and the inactivity is driving him nuts. He accepts the drink sent to him because the woman looks familiar and that's the last thing he really remembers. When he wakes up in the morning in bed with and married to Gin he is stunned. He's not so sure about her theory that he's being set up for something, but as the day goes on he has to admit that she may be right. I liked the way that they decided the cover of their marriage will enable them to do more to find out what is happening. Though marriage has not been in his life plan, Jason discovers that he really likes being married to Gin. Besides the fact that they work well together, the attraction between them is amazing. I loved the way that, in spite of knowing just how good she is at her work, Jason is very protective of her and worries about keeping her safe. The more time he spends with her the more he thinks about making the marriage a real one. I loved his solution at the end.
The suspense part of the book is great. We see that Jason is definitely being set up in a way that would make the Mission Recovery team look really bad. The only thing keeping the heat off him is the fact that being with Gin and out in public provides him with perfect alibis. The attacks on them are pretty intense and it pushes them even closer together. By the end of the book it is looking really bad for the head of the team as he appears to be working for the bad guy.
Author Debra Webb spins an exciting and intoxicating tale in her latest COLBY AGENCY: THE SPECIALIST series. READY, AIM…I DO features Jason and Ginger, two undercover agents, who find themselves in a marriage of convenience scenario. As these two dodge bullets together, they just may find that marriage to one another is not such a bad deal.
Jason Grant is next in line for the deputy director position at his job working as a specialist for Mission Recovery. He is confused about his current assignment where all he is told is that a female operative may need back up. He has been instructed to hang out around Caesar’s Palace and make himself available if the need arises.
While sitting at the bar pretending to nurse a beer, Jason receives a shot of tequila courtesy of a familiar looking red-head sitting across from him. Deciding what the heck, he throws caution to the wind and goes ahead and drinks the shot.
Meanwhile, Ginger Olin is working undercover tracking a deadly virus and the criminal who is hiding it. She is in the casino gambling while keeping an eye on her suspect when she makes her way into the bar, where she spots a familiar face. Deciding to use Jason as a cover, Ginger accepts a drink from him, and it soon becomes apparent that either Jason is inebriated, or he has been drugged.
Deciding that some fresh air may help Jason sober up, he and Ginger exit the building. Ginger notices that she is being tailed by her suspect and in order to maintain her cover she pretends that she and Jason are a couple. When she orders Jason to kiss her, he insists that they must say “I do” before he will relent. Before Ginger can consider Jason’s request, she observes a man preparing to shoot at them. Using Jason’s jacket as cover, she takes aim first, and they manage to get away unharmed.
Plots to both were not well developed and made confusing by the random allusions to whatever subplot connects all Webb's books. I did not believe either of the main characters in the first story were secret agents.....the guy was too stupid to be one and the girl was too much of a damsel in distress. It's a wonder thier covers weren't blown years ago. I didn't give a shit about any of these people.....not even the kidnapped little girl in the second story. Overall a great big MEH.
Lame story, why is Ginger so bad at her job. Its written like there's meant to be this irrestistable tension between them, but they're both such goofy bundles of spy tropes that it falls completely flat, on top of the barely coherent plot. I picked this up second hand as a double feature with Mountain Heiress, a story that's just as smutty and silly but significantly more enjoyable to read.
Also (and I didn't mark it down for this because I understand people can have different views of common history) fuck the IRA.
I admit that I picked it up because of the cover, it looked badass and intriguing. But the novel where far from that, I didn't find anything good about it
The Colby Series has been one of my favorite series since I started reading Debra Webb’s books many years ago (over 10 years ago). I started reading her books and realized it was a series and I always love to read series in order. I went to many used bookstores and searched online for the books that were out of print. I finally collected them up to the one I’d started reading and I’ve bought every one of them since including every book Debra has written. I’m hooked! This is a series that I will reread because of such great storylines and I bet you’ll feel the same way. Victoria Colby started the Colby Agency of the best private investigators and over the years it has expanded and opened another office in Texas. Victoria and her husband Lucas have planned to retire and leave the Colby Agency in great hands. Victoria’s son Jim opened the Equalizers and now they work together. I don’t want to ruin the storyline by going into great detail of the story. I wonder if Victoria and Lucas will be ever to fully retire. In Bridal Armor, Thomas Casey was the target for murder but with the help of Johara (Jo) di Rossi survives. But leaves the question of who is trying to kill off the Specialists of Mission Recovery, make them look like they are dirty and help the bad guys they are supposed to take down? And who is the gorgeous red head that keeps showing up? Is she on the good guy’s side or the bad side? Now in Ready, Aim…I Do, Specialist Jason Grant wakes up to find he is married to a beautiful red head, Ginger (Gin) Olin, but doesn’t remember it. He was sure he hadn’t had too much to drink because he was working but Ginger tells him he was hammered when in reality he was drugged and was going to be killed. Together Jason and Ginger work to uncover who is behind all the attacks. Could it be the Deputy Director of Mission Recovery, Emmett Holt who had turned and was helping Bernard Isley get his revenge of Thomas Casey for bringing down his organization years ago? Was someone else in the Mission Recovery team helping? I know you will love this book and the entire series if you choose to read all the books. Don’t miss her Faces of Evil series or any of her books. Debra has a writing style that draws you into the story and you don’t want to put the book down until you have finished it. I’ve stayed up way past my bedtime many nights. Enjoy the book and happy reading!
Jason Grant received a note last month saying "you're next". Is it a joke, is someone out to get him? Jason hasn't been able to find out anything. He is in Vegas on assignment and bored to death waiting for something to happen. When he is drugged at a bar in the casino, he wakes up married with no memory of the wedding. He does know the woman in his suite. It's CIA operative Ginger Olin. The marriage is a perfect cover to find out who is after Jason. When they start having feelings for each other it becomes difficult to keep the marriage a business relationship. Non stop action and suspense with romance. There is a second story in the book, Missing which is equally good. Can't miss, 2 for the price of 1.
The second book is Missing by Debra Webb. Jonathan Foley is in the middle of a case when he gets a call from Melissa Shepherd. He knew it must be important because they had not spoken in three years since Foley disappeared from her life. However, it was definitely an emergency and she needed all the help she could get. Someone had kidnapped her brother's little girl on the eve of his being sent back to Afghanistan. He couldn't get out of going and yet couldn't leave with the fate of his little girl in limbo. Where was she and who would have done this? There are few if any leads and she needs someone to help. Jonathan knows that it took a lot to get her to call him and he knows he has to help her. Can he do anything the police are not doing?
Kind of interesting two-person drama. There is tension here, most of all between the protagonists who have awakened married - to each other - and only one of them remembers anything about it. Lost of spycraft and surveillance here, as well as dodging some really serious killers and snipers. All the while, the two are: 1. Finding each other incredibly attractive 2. Running and playing all over Las Vegas, including a comped suite at Caesars Palace 3. Figuring out who double crossed whom and left Jason hanging out to dry 4. Staying alive long enough to figure out that they don't want their "marriage" to end.
I guess I'm no longer into spy novels--kind of went out with John LeCarre. I didn't read the first novel at all; it was just too over the top Bond.
I did read the second novel, which was more detective than spy. It just didn't hang together. Without giving away anything, I hope; I wasn't convinced by any of it. The ending felt like it was tacked on.
Generally, a waste of money.
Unfortunately, I bought several of these Intrigue 2/1 novels. Now, I'm not sure they'll be on the top of my reading pile anytime soon. I have a bad taste in my mouth and suspect it will take time to wash out.
In Webb’s romantic suspense novel, Specialist Jason Grant wakes up in his Vegas hotel married to CIA operative Ginger Olin and with no memory of the wedding. As newlyweds, they were under the perfect cover to expose whoever was targeting Jason. As they pursue the danger surrounding them, their passion flares hot and heavy.
A great addition to the new Colby Agency miniseries spin-off, The Specialists.
Yes, the next installment of the Colby's is here. I found Deb by stumbling onto The colby's when looking for a long series to read. Now I read anything Deb writes. I hope the colby's continue for many more books.
"It's always a pleasure when Lucas Camp and Victoria Colby-Camp take a special interest in a case, and Webb hasn't let retirement slow this couple down. This is a tale with bite, wit and a twisting ongoing plotline." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars
If you have been reading this womans books, then you know how truly gifted she is. I will not give away spoilers but I will say I really loved everything about this book and I highly recommend it.
