When Shahid Ali realises his younger brother is missing, he rushes to the police station. Luckily he meets a good police officer, Vikram Singh, who listens to him and asks the correct questions instead of neglecting his worries. When Shahid comes to know that the police were already probing into his brother's last known location for another major case, his worry multiplies and he starts searching for his brother by himself. . The story is divided into twelve chapters, where the first chapter covers the crime and is named 'Day 0'. The title of the consecutive chapters denote how many days have passed since then. So, when I knew that the case would be closed in just 7 days, I guessed that the story would be fast-paced and thrilling. Shahid's actions over the course of the week seemed foolish at times, but what can one expect from someone who lost their only family? Following the case was an experience. The twists and turns were very unexpected, which kept me at the edge of my chair. The story also takes a philosophical turn at some places, which gives it a nice touch. And the way the book ends is amazing! Even if I were given a hundred chances, I wouldn't have guessed it right. The poem on the last page adds a beautiful touch to the end of the story, and I read it so many times! I absolutely love the book, and I recommend this to all crime story lovers.
By Hook Or By Crook is author Abhishek Sinha's debut novel and is an interesting crime thriller. The story revolves around Shahid, the main protagonist, as he tries to find his brother. Shahid's brother is a journalist and has been missing. While the police do not immediately agree to look for him, it soon becomes clear that an on-going police investigation is linked intricately to Shahid's brother's disappearance. And thus begins a race against time to uncover the truth.
We are introduced to various characters who help to drive the plot along. However, I felt that some of the main characters were lacking in depth and a little more back story could have been provided. It is not as easy to connect with the characters in the story.
This story reads like a police procedural to some extent and shows the reader that the author has done his due diligence to get the details right. It was interesting to read the inner workings of the police force and how they go forward with their investigation. On the other hand, Shahid is an interesting character who is extremely resourceful while at the same time giving life to the words that a person will do anything for family.
On the whole, I enjoyed reading this book mainly for the way the plot plays out and for some of the unexpected twists and turns. The author delivers an ending that is quite unexpected but which definitely makes reading this book worthwhile.

After a long time I read a thriller that had me totally invested in its storyline and characters.
The narrative is engrossing and the situations and settings created by the author so deliciously intriguing that I couldn't help but complete the book in just two days. I wouldn't want to talk much about the plot as I don't want to give out any spoilers but I'll say this much that there are some unexpected twists and turns and the book leads you to places that you wouldn't envisage when beginning to read it.
This is perhaps one of the best books I've read in the recent times. Won't give any spoilers but the story was so engaging and thrilling that I read this book in just one go.
I loved the plot and the plot twist. It was an enjoyable read. The characters felt so real, and the author has done an amazing job with the narration. Overall, it's a good read 📚 👌
The book is socially important to showcase how people having power misuse their authority for their own benefits. While language wise the book felt a bit wordy to me, apart from it, the book can be a literary treat for those who love it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Captivating storyline and character growth without breaking the suspence about who is that police officer involved with arm deal, hats off. The appreciation for this book goes to it's magnetic attraction created by Sinha's narrative style. Though in third person narration, the accuracy of words painted the characters, events and situations on the canvas infront of reader's eyes. There should not be any spoilers here as this book demands a reader who experiences the story by person. I fully recommend this book to who ever is reading this review.

🥀The book "By Hook Or By Crook" penned down by the author Abhishek Sinha is an electrifying rollercoaster of suspense and intrigue that delves deep into the underworld of a city consumed by criminality and corruption. From the very foremost page, readers are thrown into a world of mystery as the protagonist, Shahid, sees himself entangled in a complex quagmire of events following the disappearance of his cop brother and the absconding of a journalist. "By Hook or By Crook," penned by Sinha, follows an intriguing plotline where a civilian steps into the shoes of a detective when his brother goes missing, adding a unique twist to the conventional detective story. The storyline, with its unexpected turns and the protagonist's unconventional journey into the world of investigation, was engaging. The initial premise of a missing person and the subsequent unravelling of a larger conspiracy within the city provided a solid foundation for the narrative.
However, as the story delved deeper, the plot seemed to lose some of its momentum. The build-up to the climax felt a bit dragged and overdramatic, leaving the reader expecting a grand revelation involving big rackets and prominent underworld players. Unfortunately, the resolution did not meet these heightened expectations.
One notable aspect is the introduction of various sub-tropes that, while intriguing, were not fully explored in this instalment. It leaves one wondering if the author deliberately kept these cards close to the chest, perhaps intending to explore them in a sequel. This strategy could either be a clever move, building anticipation for future releases, or a missed opportunity to enhance the current narrative.
One unusual choice made by the author is naming the city in the story simply as "city." While this could be a deliberate decision to create a universal setting, it might leave some readers yearning for a more vivid and specific backdrop. Also, the similarity in the names of the two brothers, Sajid and Shahid, brought to my mind the classic duo Thomson and Thompson. While this may have been intentional, it could be confusing for readers and distract from the narrative.
It's challenging to discuss a thriller without revealing spoilers, but suffice it to say that the twists and turns in the story are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Sinha effectively maintains the suspense throughout the novel, making it a page-turner. Overall, a worthwhile read for fans of the thriller genre.
A riveting crime thriller novel with sufficient action and suspense drama! As the story opens up, Shahid – the protagonist – is worried about his missing journalist brother Sajid. He seeks help from the police team that has powerful and sly people like Vikram and Raman.
Vikram doesn’t like Shahid sneaking his nose in their investigation. Soon, they cast their doubt on him. He is taken as one of the suspects in illegal arms deal. A few pages in the novel and it becomes gripping. Shahid begins investigation at his own. However, little did he know that the world he is fighting against has already trapped him?
The police procedural and Shahid’s secret investigation runs parallel for around seven days. Though Shahid and Vikram are the main leading detective type figures, yet in a crime thriller what seems right can also mislead. The storyline is highly unpredictable, as it takes into account man’s accountability and inclination for sins actuated by personal greed. Motive and greed bind the spine of the story, when the revelations are out in the end the novel looks something different from what it had started in the beginning.
Shahid is a likeable character, his quest for his missing brother is sympathetic. His yearning for a proper investigation gives his characterization dimension, depth, and it moves the plot along. With time it is sure that the readers will grow anxious about the pending puzzle but the end conclusion or the way story unfolds will leave you nonplussed. The narration of the novel is simple, posing no difficulties in understanding the plotline and the characters. Abhishek Sinha maintained a sense of suspense right since the beginning, he never allowed his readers to predict the destination his characters were treading on.
In his debut novel, the author has wonderfully narrated a murder mystery, with clues thrown all the way, but only if you are keen-eyed will you be able to catch them. As a murder mystery should be, the murder happens at the very beginning: the two men involved in it aren’t named to keep the suspense –they are referred to as the ‘first person’ and the ‘second person’. The story revolves around Shahid, a corporate guy, whose younger journalist brother goes missing while covering an arms’ deal. He loves to read murder mysteries and tries to solve the mystery of the disappearance only to be included in the suspect’s list. He takes the help of police but can anyone be trusted? Can “a blind’s faith about colour” be trusted? It is a web of suspense, wit and excitement. The beginning is quite realistic with the author providing his minute observation on life. Writing style is gripping –the author seems to be a die-hard fan of crime thrillers, who has understood all the nuances of writing one –throwing in clues without making it obvious, constantly misguiding the reader to guess one thing and giving exactly the other thing the next moment, so as the readers never know what to expect or what’s coming in the next moment, and making use of all the points and aspects, showcasing his attention to detail. The main characters are well-sketched; the plot is intriguing and keeps you hooked till the very last word; and the author has also beautifully weaved in philosophical statements. I especially liked his observation on “paying attention” and that stands true if you are willing to find out the culprit. This is a must pick-up for all the crime thriller lovers out there.

⭐⭐️⭐️⭐/5 Shahid, a regular corporate employee finds himself in the middle of a great scandal involving abductions, illegal arms deal, and maybe even a murder. What happened? Why is the lad stuck there? The first few chapters really set a good tone to this debut and the plot actually had me hooked. Although the plot might look rather common from afar, it is when you read the book that you realise Sinha did a great job in planning this book out. No major plot point was left unused but nothing really felt forced. The writing was also engaging for a debut and did justice with the story. I did feel at the first half of the book that quite a few parts of the book were quite stretched out, and had to skim through them. The characters were.. unique. Shahid definitely was a interesting character to read. Vikram was a delight, and the camaraderie he showed with his associates was beautiful. Although, I feel like a couple of other characters would have made better impact if their sketches were deep. By Hook Or By Crook by Abhishek Sinha is an interesting thriller that would raise quite a few questions by the time one completes reading it.
To start on a positive note, By Hook or by Crook’s setting is a nice change of scenery for me and I would have loved more details in that regard. I also appreciate that the ending is unexpected and feel that it is a nice payoff for having read the story in its entirety.
I would love nothing better than to champion a new author, but this was a difficult read. The book was severely hampered by its sentence structures. The first half is hobbled by lengthy digressions which seem pretty common sense and unnecessary. There are instances of not having a strong enough grasp on English phraseology such as “the fingers in his toes” and “orange, pinhole-sized ball” (in reference to a lit cigarette), which sent the wrong visual. The second half of the book sees the sentences become a little clearer but still not very enjoyable to read.
Another gripe is that the antagonist, during an especially tense situation, takes the time to over-explain to the protagonist all of the details of the criminal web he wove. Very unrealistic. There are better ways to let the reader in on the underlying truths.
By Hook or by Crook has the beginnings of a good story but it would benefit from a better literary flow, characters that were a bit more fleshed out, and a more natural dialogue.
"By Hook or By Crook" by Abhishek Sinha is a thrilling novel that will captivate anyone who loves this genre. Right from the cover page, the book grabs your attention and immerses you completely in its story. The writing is concise and doesn't drag the plot unnecessarily. The twists are cleverly planned out, and every new page brings a new challenge and a fresh angle that will keep your curiosity piqued. The author manages to keep the story's final outcome a secret until the very end, never revealing even a hint.
The novel tells the story of two brothers, Shahid and Sajid, who are leading a simple life until they suddenly get embroiled in a serious situation where one of them goes missing, and the other is held responsible. The case is crucial and challenging for Officer Vikram and his team as it's connected to something significant that is going to happen in the coming days. There are many suspects, and things start getting ugly with each passing day of the investigation. Shahid's decision to conduct his investigation only adds to the police's suspicion, and he soon becomes a strong suspect himself. How will the police solve this case? Where is Sajid? Is Shahid the real culprit? What is the bigger plan? Want to know the answers? Pick it up and enjoy the thriller.

Lately, I've not been giving much attention to thrillers because of the same stale treatment of plots as compared to the classics we have grown up with. But I gave this one a try seeing a social media post, and really glad that I did. It has the old world charm of traditional detective novels combined with exciting action packed 'chor-police' Bollywood drama. This would really do well as a web series as it has cinematic quality in the storytelling. The prologue starts with a bang and after that it has one false clue after the other in the breathless game of investigation as more skeletons stumble out of the closet. One keeps guessing till the end! The last chapter "Everybody knows" leaves a lasting impression as one ponders the futility of our lives spent in designing our careers, choosing our peace, and spending moments with our loved ones, when everything is at the mercy of those in power. What we hold dear isn't worth a penny to the pestilence of corruption, and our lives can change in a second based on someone's whims. I suggest reading this novel on a weekend evening or during a journey.
“By Hook Or By Crook” is a gripping mystery thriller that will keep you hooked from the first page to the last.
The story revolves around Shahid, who is searching for his missing journalist brother, Sajid. On approaching the police for help, he himself becomes a suspect in the eyes of the police. Determined to find his brother, Shahid begins investigating the case. But as his investigation moves ahead, shocking details begin to emerge. Will Shahid be able to prove his innocence even as the evidence against him starts piling up?
The story starts with a bang and soon you are hooked to the story, with several twists and turns, along the way. The best thing about the book is that it keeps you guessing till the end. There are a few subplots which are not explored as much.
The characters are well crafted, each driven by his own motives, adding a unique dimension to his characters. The storytelling maintains the suspense throughout, woven around different narratives.
Overall, “By Hook Or By Crook” is an excellent read with the perfect blend of suspense and thrill. If you love reading a mystery that keeps you guessing, you will love this book.
In case you need to remember the following: TEXT: If you're feeling overwhelmed by deep philosophical discussions and excessive materialism, it's refreshing to delve into an edge-of-your-seat investigative thriller. I found the main character, Shahid Ali, to be a compelling protagonist. The journey was packed with thrilling surprises, starting with his encounter with the sympathetic police officer, Vikram Singh, and culminating in a gripping series of events. The writing is concise and straightforward. Each character is vividly depicted within the intricately constructed storyline. It's rare to find such controlled storytelling from a first-time author.
The narrative revolves around Shahid's mission to unravel the mystery behind his journalist brother's vanishing. As he plunges deeper into the seedy underbelly of the city, he encounters corruption, peril, and deception obstructing his every step.
The high-speed, action-packed adventure is brimming with unforeseen developments to keep you on the edge of your seat. Recommended for enthusiasts of thrillers and those who enjoy a good mystery. This adrenaline-fueled escapade is definitely worth the ride.
This book is a real page-turner! It follows Shahid as he searches for his missing brother, Karim, a police officer. Shahid is quickly thrown into a world of crime and corruption, and he soon realizes that Karim may have been involved in something bigger than he ever imagined.
The story is fast-paced and keeps you guessing until the very end. I found myself constantly wondering who to trust and what was really going on. The author does a great job of building suspense and keeping you on the edge of your seat.
I also enjoyed the well-developed characters. Shahid is a relatable protagonist who is determined to find his brother, no matter what the cost. The supporting characters are also interesting and add depth to the story.
The book also touches on some social issues, such as corruption and poverty. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the story and makes you think about the world around you. The ending is totally surprising, so be prepared for a twist.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers. It's a suspenseful and thought-provoking read that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.
This book is crime fiction at its finest. Author Abhishek Sinha has delivered infraction of the law in a tightly woven plot with well-developed characters.
The story starts with attention grabbing scene that progresses at a gripping pace, holding you hostage. You can't help but turn the pages to know what happens next. Shahid was my favorite and the central character of this story. And I must say, Vikram was not far behind.
What I love the most about this fictional account is the fact that how eerily real it is. Life is not fair, and the good guy doesn't always win. Doing the right thing doesn't pay off most of the time and trying to be a hero leads to nowhere. Perhaps an early grave.
The subtly philosophical tone that author used to describe our vices was unpretentious. It is how we justify our actions and draw personal lines to feel merited. It resonated with me the most.
Pick this one up and see how blurring the truth is from the reality.
Sounds like an intense and gripping plot! "By Hook or By Crook" is a rollercoaster ride of suspense and mystery. This book is written in such a way as to keep its audience on the edge of their seats.
In this suspenseful narrative, Shahid's journey to uncover the truth about his brother's disappearance and clear his own name is fraught with danger and deception. The story promises a deep dive into a world where morality is gray, and trust is a scarce commodity. As Shahid peels back layers of corruption and crime, the readers or viewers would likely find themselves questioning the motives of each character, including Shahid himself.
Themes of familial duty, justice, and the pervasive nature of corruption could be explored, enriching the narrative and giving it depth beyond the immediate thrill of the chase. The moral ambiguity and the constant tension between personal loyalty and the greater good would add layers to the character development, making "By Hook Or By Crook" a compelling study of characters caught in extreme circumstances.
This masterpiece ends with a quote like this. 😭 Come on!
After Romance it's suspense thriller which I'm a big fan of, firstly before I start with the review. Bruh, how amazing does the cover look? Damn, I loved it.
Abhishek Sinha definitely looks like an experienced writer but when I visited his amazon profile I came to see who is a first time author. So, this definitely is a good book.
Let's talk about Shahid Ali, the book starts with him being a corporate employee but after each chapter his chapter development was great. Coming to the writing style, the way each chapter is written is idk how to explain but my excitement to finish the book with each chapter increased. The question of what's next made me finish this book in just one day.
Definitely a good thriller. Definitely deserves a 5 star. Please give it a read if you are into mystery investigation thrillers.
Excellent plot, if I were to summarise how I felt about this book. The story is expertly served with the ideal balance of mystery, danger, and intrigue combined with plot twists and reflective elements thanks to Abhishek Sinha's amazing writing.
As the protagonist Shahid looks for his brother, a journalist, he gets entangled in a web of intrigue and suspicion. The startling disclosures cast doubt on every known fact as he works his way through the intricate web of deceit and treachery to clear his identity.
Characters with depth that had me turning the pages nonstop. I was riveted by the story because it was so expertly handled and had so many unexpected turns. Not only did I read this book, but I was gripped by the story right up until the very end!
The narrative so skillfully expresses the tension, drama, and uncanny sensation that accompany a well-written crime thriller! Why was it a PAGETURNER? The unexpected turn the author took this story in is and that truly pay offs making it a delightfully twisty read
This book has a cast of characters as multifaceted as the intricate plot itself. Each character is a puzzle piece in this gripping crime thriller, and Abhishek Sinha masterfully peels back the layers of their personalities as the story progresses. Abhishek breathes life into his characters, making them feel like real individuals with their own secrets and moral dilemmas. It's their complexities and inner conflicts that drive the narrative forward, leaving readers captivated by the psychological depth of the characters as much as by the unfolding mystery. There's a lot to like in this book from the settings to the narrative style and the pacing but what will simply take your breath away are the twists (and there are several). It's a brilliantly written book with complex characters and an engaging storyline and it definitely deserves to be read. Fully recommended.
