I was born in the 70s in the UK and my upbringing wasn’t easy, we never really had anything easy in my house. I’m not one to complain, hard times mould you and make you appreciate what really matters, and make the possessions you have more precious. I was rich in love and support from my unbelievable mother who always did her best for me and my brother.

I wasn’t an achiever at school and left as soon as I could and worked for a while before going back to education later in life. I completed my Honors degree in Communication Studies and ventured out into the world in the mid-nineties. I was lucky and scored a first-rung job at an Ad Agency. It was at the tail end of the Mad Men period, where it was all ego and booze (and other things) before the onset of the digital age changed advertising forever.

It was there that I first discovered I had a talent for creative writing. I was actually a ‘suit’ and wrote a piece on the noticeboard about a friend who had terminal Motor Neurone Disease; I was trying to raise awareness and money to take him on the holiday of a lifetime to America. The Creative Director of the Agency told me it was one of the best pieces of writing he’d ever read. I wish I still had that piece of writing; I’d love to read it again now.

I became disillusioned with Advertising and I drifted into the world of video games as I’d always had an interest and had been gaming since the late 70s. So I started in Marketing positions at various Publishers trying to work my way up the ladder and having some fun at the same time. For some crazy reason during 1999 I managed to score a job working as a Sports Agent in Monaco. That’s a long story and summarizing that insane year is perhaps another book I need to write.

I returned back to the industry I love and have been there ever since. I’m lucky enough to have worked on some of the biggest franchises going, I won’t name them here, I prefer to keep the Church and State separate so to speak.
When it comes to my creative influences, I must say I’ve been a Sci-Fi enthusiast since I can remember. I grew up on a constant diet of Star Trek, reading all manner of Sci-Fi series from Philip K. Dick to Douglas Adams and watching every film and TV series going. I still think the winner is Battle Star Gallactica, I am still amazed by that series.

As far as my own work goes, I try to pitch it at a modern audience who appreciate snappy dialogue with a sense of fun, I don’t do cheesy dialogue. I try to create a believable world and have a sense of morality running through the narrative. I also like interweaving real facts and history in to the text. I want people to learn from my work as well as enjoy it. I want to broaden readers’ minds beyond the OMG-Aliens-Killz-we’re-all-dooooomed Sci-Fi that dominates the contemporary zeitgeist.

I live in London, with my amazing Girlfriend who inspires me each and every day. If you’d like to follow me on twitter please do so, I’m on @humanredux or @JohnCWithwick

Yet again I read a book that reads like a film screenplay. Alien warns the president of the USA of alien invasion and hand picked humans travel back in time to reboot history. All goes well till they are outwitted. The problem was there were attempts to inject humour which came across as poor character development. I liked it but in the same way you like a blockbuster movie you enjoy it when you are in the cinema, but you don't spend the next month trying to get family and friends to talk about it. Despite my reservations I will probably read the sequel.
