A novelette that formed the core of David Zindell's legendary first novel Neverness.
In Shanidar, a restless, overly civilized man tires of the oppressive existence of the trillions of citizens of the Civilized Worlds spread across the stars. Goshevan seeks a different way of living, a way to be new. His quest takes him to the world of Icefall, home to the Order of Mystic Mathematicians and Other Seekers of the Ineffable Flame (and also the topological nexus of the galaxy). In the city of Neverness, whose streets are colored ice, he finds cutter who carks his body into the shape of the Neanderthal-like Alaloi who have long ago peopled the frozen islands west of Neverness. For the Alaloi, like Goshevan, have their own dreams of how human beings should live in a deadly and incomprehensible universe.

How David Zindell has not sold more books than the Bible is a mystery to me everything he writes is so profound, so bursting with joy and happiness it just makes you want to read more of his works. It was lovely to revisit Neverness, this book made me want to immediately read Neverness and Requiem for homosapiens again. The other stories included were also excellent.

A book that can make you feel and show emotion is always a good read. Shanidar did a fantastic job of opening up my mind and bringing emptions to the forefront. Creating a universe which is not only realistic but so far from the current state we know is no easy task, and Zindell does this perfectly.

I love Dsvid Zindell's works, but this one fell.flat. Only 2 was set in the Neverness universe, was a 3.5 star. The others were much less..Normally his writing is addictive, ans his later working The Idiot God's still.shows that. These short stories just did not work for me.

A solid short fiction story with piles of world building.
Nicely, the world building takes a back seat to the drama. (A guy seeking meaning by being someone else, and the impact this has on the lives of people around him)
