Being a vampire hunter is hungry work. John Magnus was your not-quite-so-average orphan-turned-Marine before his convoy was attacked by vampires, leaving him as the only human survivor. John's journey as a vampire hunter takes him to San Diego, where a vicious new foe--and a new family--await him. John's Uncle, a prodigious vampire hunter, trains John in the finer points of slaying the denizens of the night until an unexpected ambush turns everything upside down, and John is forced to fight against a new threat that he was just beginning to understand.

John Magnus, a marine while on a tour of duty was sent out on a routine mission to rescue wounded marines from an MRAP vehicle. When they arrived the MRAP was torn apart, and not much was recognized as human remains. His team, and himself are ambushed by creatures and all but him are killed. He wakes up two months later in hospital, after being treated for his injuries where he receives a letter from his uncle (who he never knew he had). The letter explains that his uncle knows what happened to him, and that he should make his way to his uncle’s pawn shop. His uncle arranges for him to be honorably discharged much to John’s disgust. When he reaches his uncle’s pawn shop he realized that his uncle is a bit eccentric. He listens to him, and comes to the realization that his family calling is to be a vampire hunter. John is thrown in a room for days with a vampire Lily, who tries to compel him but doesn’t succeed. It seems its all part of the training process that will help John with his vampire hunting powers. John gains his powers quickly and one of the things I noted was with his power comes an insatiable appetite - he eats massively. John is in awe of his uncle’s abilities, when he follows him to a nest of vampires, which turns out to be a trap. John escapes but he is very badly hurt and Lily helps him to recover nursing him back to health. Unfortunately Ignatius is captured. Lily seeks the help of a witch and a werewolf to help John with powers to fight the extremely old vampire who has captured Ignatius.

The book is full of all things creature, and includes vampires, witches, werewolves and zombies. I really enjoyed the storyline, and I think that if Mr. Moore writes more in the series, then perhaps Lily and John may have a romantic connection, even though she is a vampire and he is a vampire hunter. There was glimpse of a romantic entanglement throughout the book.

I enjoyed the book and gave it four stars. There were some editing and formatting issues throughout the book. I also found at times there was a little too much explanation. However, overall I really enjoyed the book and would definitely read another in this series.

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.

John Magnus is a Seaman through and through (giggle). After a rocky start in life he joined the Navy and found his calling.
He thought he was going on a routine rescue mission until his team were ambushed by unbelievable creatures that are faster than he can see and that were eating his comrades. He knows what they seem like but can they really be vampires?

Weeks later he awakes as the sole survivor of the attack in Hospital with a letter from a supposed Uncle who knows what happened to him and an honourable discharge from the Navy.
Seeking answers he ends up in a Pawn Shop in front of a giant of a man telling him of a legacy he couldn't have imagined in his wildest dreams.

It's a Paranormal Fantasy filled with action and adventure with a wee bit of Romance if you look hard enough.

John is a great male lead that's relate-able and not over the top. I think the fact he's written by a male author makes him seem genuine and gives a different perspective that had me having a little crush on him.
His Uncle is crazy and out of this world but so fun to read about. His little quirks and "hoss" sayings made me realise this story wouldn't be the same without him.
John does have a dilemma on his hands with the lovely vampire Lily in that should he love her or hate her but I think you can guess where he's leaning.

The action was easy to follow and the detailing was descriptive and easy to comprehend and didn't overwhelm the story like some fight scenes can.

This book was addictive and I can't believe it's the authors first release as it seems to have been written by a pro. Can't wait for the sequel so keep on writing Moore!
