Zabel Yesayan Silahtarın Bahçeleri'ni yazarken yalnızca kendi yaşamının ilk yıllarındaki İstanbul'un çok çeşitli cephelerini ve çocukluk deneyimlerine ait bazı özel anların sarsıcı duyusal bilincini yakalamayı değil, aynı zamanda geri gelmemek üzere kaybolan bir dünyayı yeniden canlandırmayı da hedeflemiştir. Diğer yazdıklarının hiçbiri bu derece şiirsel ve melankolik bir hasretin o loş pırıltısı ile kaplı değildir. Bu yüzden, okudukça yavaş yavaş Üsküdar ve çevresini bizim de kovulduğumuz, ama onun hayal gücünün yaratıcılığı sayesinde yeniden kavuştuğumuz bir Dünya Cenneti olarak düşünmeye başlıyoruz.

Ermeni edebiyatının en önemli kalemlerinden biri addedilen ve entelijensiya ile ulus devletleş(eme)me sürecindeki bağa hayatı ve eserleriyle ışık tutan bir kadın yazar, Zabel Yesayan.

Zabel, born in the latter part of the 19th century, grew up in a large Armenian family in Constantinople. Her fascinating memoir is a portrayal of life in an urban Armenian community prior to the Genocide of 1915. She and her younger sister were raised in a household filled by her large extended family. The adults lived beyond their financial means and were emotionally mercurial, some affected by alcoholism and mental illness. Zabel coped through strong willfulness and unpredictable behavior. She grew into a passionate independent woman and an articulate writer with a remarkably detailed and nuanced recall of her childhood.

A fresh, lovely memoir about growing up in Constantinople's Armenian community in the late 1800s. Zabel Yessayan, a fiercely talented writer and activist, recreates her childhood with the wide and observant eyes of a child, without judgment or analysis. She vividly depicts her engaging, eccentric family; the larger community of which they are a part; and her own passionate engagement with the world around her, now long vanished.

✅️ Ի դեպ, գիտե՞ք, որ Եսայանին վերագրված հայտնի «Կինը աշխարհ չէ եկած մինակ հաճելի ըլլալու համար....» միտքը իրականում ոչ թե իր, այլ այլ մտավորականի տողերն են, որը Զապելը մեջբերել է իր հոդվածներից մեկում, սակայն թյուրիմացության ու ոչ ուշադիր կարդալու արդյունքում ամենուր տարածվել է որպես Զապել Եսայանի հեղինակային միտք։

Ես էլ վերջերս իմացա այս մասին` հետազոտող ու ֆանտաստիկ մարդ Արփինե Հարոյանի հետ զրույցից։

This book is interesting simply because of the subject matter. It's an autobiography of Zabel Yessayan during the years that she was growing up in Constantinople in the 1890s. What makes a book like that worth reading? First, just the personal comments of what it was like in Constantinople during that time period. A young girl doesn't hear that much about what's really going on, but what she is aware of makes it more interesting. For example, when she reaches a certain age she should start attending church, but if the Janissaries see her they may just decide to take her away and no one can stop them. If she doesn't attend the Armenian church, the church authorities might take somebody from her family and torture them. She includes descriptions of her family, the back-biting, the put-downs of neighbors and neighborhoods. She has stories of what she put up with in school. And then there's her language. She's a poet and some of her writing style and her descriptions of scenes are written with true poetic style. This book was well worth reading.

As the author of the book said for the events she describes in the final act, there isn’t any concievable way for me to describe this book. It’s definitely one that must be read and experienced by the individual.

What a great read. A fantastic translation, and the first into English since Ara Baliozian's abridged version. Beautiful reflection of a pioneering feminist in Istanbul. This is a book that will only grow in reputation as time goes on.
