Love and Decay 1 #5

Love and Decay, Episode Five

Rate this book
Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

Morning has come to the lonely farmhouse where Reagan, Haley and the Parkers set up camp and watched as Page came down with strep throat. Hendrix and Nelson haven’t returned from their medicine run. Page is still very sick and the “contingency plan” hangs in the air.

Determined to save the boys she has come to care so deeply about, Reagan teams up with Vaughan to set out and rescue Hendrix and Nelson from whatever trouble they’ve gotten themselves into.

However, before they can liberate anybody, they themselves are captured.

Introduced to another scary settlement, Reagan is split up from the Parker brothers and put in the custody of a boy not much older than her. Kane Allen is possessive and fierce in his attempt to own and possess Reagan. She learns a fear that even in her dangerous, Zombie-filled life, she has not known before.

Before the night is over she has to find a way to escape Kane and his horrifying captivity. She will face armed guards, starving Zombies and the worst danger of them all- Kane.

Love and Decay, Episode Five, is the fifth in a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.

This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks. Approximately 20,000 words.

This is an interesting series.
It has humour so things don't get too heavy but at the same time they do loose people and there is violence and killing.

The series is a long one and these main characters stories continue for 3 seasons.
There is also a spin off series that deals with the sister later.

There is little intimacy. There is touching, hugging and a few kisses but no sex until much later in the last season.
The main 2 characters have love interests but due to the nature of the start of the virus and the constant threat there are no intimate scenes until the end of season 3.

Each season ends on a HFN with an enemy thread running through the whole series.
Each episode either ends as HFN with a goal set for the next or at times an immediate threat will run across several episodes.
At the time I read these the whole series was on Amazon KU so it was possible to read one after the other or complete in a box set.
If you start reading and want to get to a HEA you will need to read the entire 3 seasons.
There is the immediate zombie threat which is constant but also the series deals with humanities reaction to survival.
Often a bigger threat is the desire for power between the surviving groups and these at times use lack of resources and scientific experimentation to control the main threats.
Later in the series there is a love triangle situation of sorts for the heroine.
It's not exactly a love triangle but there is a dividing force between the main couple due to the interest from another man.
There are no intimate details but there is a kissing scene with the other man, but at the time the main couple are not together.
The characters are all very different, they have their flaws but they are college age so when they make mistakes and sometimes they are stupid ones I put it down to youth and although they have learnt survival through experience the threat is constant so it's not easy for them to be sensible all the time.
There is a good bit of banter between the group and a great deal of humour.
There are some serious issues dealt with too and the main human enemy threat is pretty evil.

Now this is action at it's finest!

The author made an easy flow of story that made me picture it in my head like I'm watching a movie.

Pros: The addition is pretty exciting! I have this feeling that I'm gonna love-hate Tyler. I already like Miller by the way.

Cons: I think it's too early for Reagan to choose between the Parkers. It's like the author's pacing it up and it doesn't really match the time needed to fall for someone you only knew for a month.

This is a spoiler free review on Love & Decay Episodes 1-7

(Giveaway at the end of the review...Giveaway if for the entire first season of Love & Decay, some are not yet released but will be sent to the winner upon release.)

This has been such a great, fun, and exciting read. I am a huge fan of zombies. Have been for as long as I can remember. Now, it is so easy to get your zombie fix so easy...we have The Walking Dead, the millions of movies out there, from World War Z, Zombieland and the classics like Night of the Living Dead but when it comes to getting a zombie fix in a book with the added bonus of a romance...Love & Decay is PERFECT.

Let me start by telling you that while Love & Decay is in fact a series of Novella's, it is also a lot like a show. Every two weeks a new episode is released. They are short quick reads but a packed full of action, romance and lots of gross gooey zombie blood.

Love & Decay reflects around a tight knit family, The Parker's and 2 young ladies. The Parker's are from oldest to youngest, Vaughan, Hendrix, Nelson, Harrison, King and the 8 year old little sister Page. They have survived the past two years by being careful of their surroundings, untrustworthy of others and relying on their awesome survival skills.

Reagan and Haley are two 20 year old girls who seriously kick ass...figuratively and literally. They lost everyone the cared for right in the beginning of the spreading zombie virus (which has a pretty funny start btw). They were not always the zombie ass kicking, bad ass girls they are now. They were the popular cheerleaders, into boys, nice clothes, girly girls. It is seriously pretty damn impressive that they have survived this long.

This whole series or I should probably should say season has been about two groups joining together and forming a bond that is a force to be reckoned with. During a zombie apocalypse, the last thing on anyone's mind is love. Finding the one, living a normal life for a girl right out of high school, well almost out of high school (damn zombies).

Reagan is the main story teller. We got one episode in Haley's POV which was nice, got to get inside her head a bit and learn more about her take on the whole zombie thing and a bit of how she feels about a certain Parker Brother. There is also a couple added members in the later episodes, brother and sister Tyler and Miller. I am now reading episode 8 which happens to be Tyler's POV so I'm hoping that I start to like her more and understand her more.

I really enjoy reading these novella's. They are super fun and you actually picture the scene in front of you. While, yes, there are a bit of editing problems here and there, I don't really pay much attention to it since the author has to be pretty darn busy to be releasing them every 2 weeks. Editing take some time and well, I'd rather have the book instead of waiting.

This book has everything. I mean everything...there is blood, guns, action, HUMOR, love, kissing, drama, fighting...I can't think of anymore to type but its all there. Rachel Higginson has a true talent. This has a mix of your zombieland humor, your walking dead action and seriousness and MORE...

I highly recommend this series to everyone. Even if your not a zombie fan you will definitely not care after this, its just so much fun to read and am so happy I found this series.

There will be 12 total episodes is this season and the author has said there is 3 seasons planned so far. The first season should end in November. We should expect Episode 9 October 25th.

Oh gosh, I love these so fiercely! Another killer episode, Reagan is in fine form for this one (love her POV) taking on the "contingency plan" with Vaughan, going after Hendrix and Nelson. I'll let her have the female Rambo title too, she is pretty badass.
I love her honesty and optimism in all of the situations they come up against in this one, she never makes her personality take a backseat to her survival odds and its always a riot haha
Beautiful writing as always, I have no idea how the author gets such quality out this quickly!!!

This one seemed both longer and shorter than the rest, I think it was because it was a more in depth look at a shorter period of time, and while that was amazing (I loved the dialogue and worldbuilding here), the cliffhangers from episode four are still kind of there. No word of medicine or actual resolution with the love triangle,
Will the next one really be out on the 13th?? That seems sooner than usual? I am trying not to get my hopes up either way, waiting for these blows so much haha!! And that is really the best compliment I could give this series.

Fav lines:
"We had managed to survive -mostly because we liked to cuddle and Zombies were slower with their feet entrenched in snow."

"Reagan, there is almost nothing I would fight my brother over. I mean, nothing." He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over us. "Except maybe one thing."
[...]
"And if this was a different world or life, I would fight for you; I would go up against Hendrix and let the best man win." -Vaughan

"He was the weirdest person I'd ever met. And after knowing Hendrix, that was a feat he should win an award for."

ARC review:

Leave it to Rachel to pick up right where she left off, never missing a beat. The girls have gotten little to no sleep as Page is very sick and the dashing Hendrix and Nelson have set off in the night to follow a boy who promises to give them lifesaving medicine en in return for rescuing him and his family from a chilling settlement. Despite promises of a quick and safe return to the farm house, the guys have yet to come back by early morning. Vaughn has decided to go find his brothers and bring them home, asking Reagan to help him. Both Vaughn and Reagan gear up (hiding as many weapons on their bodies as possible) and set off toward the settlement to find Hendrix and Nelson.

So on the way to the settlement, Vaughn asks Reagan some questions about which Parker brother she's most interested in.( you'll have to read to find out who was mentioned) This conversation also gets into said brothers virginity *giggles* its a nice break before the tension that's fixing to come!! Hold on because you' re going into creepy town. It isn't long before Reagan and Vaughn are captured and taken to the settlement. Reagan is relieved to see Hendrix and Nelson but the relief is short lived..... She is literally placed in the custody of the very handsome, powerful and possessive Kane Allen. He leads Reagan through the small picturesque town, people seem happy, eerily happy perhaps its the gun men standing on every roof??? Kane stops at his perfect house that will now serve as Reagan's prison. Complete with bars on the windows and padlocks on all the doors. He informs Reagan that she is a rare and precious gem that he will not let go of for any price. *shiver* Oh and if she wants the Parker brothers to live, she will stay with him forever! Reagan knows that she must escape Kane and all the gun men in order to get back to her zombie infested life with the Parker brothers.

Hendrix and Nelson took off the night before to go in search of meds for Page, with a kid they just met. They didn't make it back, so the little punk could have very well set them up. So now it is up to Vaughan and Reagan to go and bring them back.

While out looking for them, Vaughan informs Reagan that he has feelings for her. But Reagan wants to make it absolutely clear that she isn't sure who she wants to be with: Hendrix, Vaughan, or no body at all. It is the end of the world and love is the last thing on her mind. But, when a run in with a stranger happens, he could very well change her whole way of thinking. In this new world, love may be all you have left to cling too...

Higginson does it once again, episode after episode, giving us another intense story that gets us pumped up for an actual zombie apocalypse. I really enjoyed this one, as we are back in Reagan's head, and we see her have this inner battle with herself. She likes to think of herself as strong and fierce, and trust me she is, but when conflict arises in this story, she learns a few things about herself. For one, who she really has feelings for. At least to me, it seemed like she came to one final conclusion. And I am really hoping I am right. Ahh, if it wasn’t for those darn Parker boys, Reagan would be living in drama-less bliss. But she would also be Feeder food right about now, too!

I am eager to see what happens next for these guys and gals. Now that the story is really unfolding, there is no telling what will happen and where it is going to go. And the next one comes out a week early!

Fav Line...

It didn't surprise me though, to know that any of the Parker brothers could choose whether to leave a trail or blend in completely. They were like super-human GI Joes. At the end of this whole Apocalypse thing, I was petitioning to have action figures made of them.

**I received this as an ARC from Rachel in exchange for an honest review.**

I don't know why, but I was skeptical of this book.
I obviously knew it was going to be great - because all the books so far in the season have been amazing... but for whatever reason, I was seeing all these reviews about how everyone LOVED the book, and all I could think was, "Is it really that amazing??"

Psht... Who am I kidding?!? Of course it was that amazing! Plus some!

Not only does Reagan FINALLY figure out which Parker brother she wants.... and actually says it out loud to other people... but... BUT - new characters are introduced! And another crazy culty settlement in involved.

You meet Miller (you met in him episode 4, but you see more of him here), and his sister Tyler - and their older brother Kane. Okay... so let's talk Kane. He's an odd duck - that's for sure. He's possessive, he's slightly creepy, and I did really want to scream and yell at him (and let's face it, punch him in the face). He made me so angry with the whole Reagan stuff - and I wanted to hate him. I really did. I wanted to hate him so bad - and part of me does. Part of me never wants to see that creep again! BUT.... there is another part of me that thinks, "Kane isn't too bad... if only he found a different woman to play caveman with." I mean, he was also protective and semi-sweet (maybe I'm the only one who saw that?).
I would definitely like him to come up in future episodes... HOWEVER, I want him to be over Reagan. I don't want anymore drama on that front!! Reagan finally has her man... LET IT BE!!!! UGH.

This was a f-ing (oh yeah, I said it!!) amazing episode! Best one so far!
I cannot wait to see where the story goes!

And we are back to Reagan's POV! I loved Haley's POV in the last episode, but it was nice to get back to Reagan.

In this episode we pick up right from that cliffhanger ending of last episode where Nelson and Hendrix leave in the night to go find medicine for Paige. The two boys have been gone all night and the group is getting worried. So what does my fabulous Reagan decide to do about it? You all know Reagan. She is not the kind of girl to sit idly by and wait for stuff to happen. She's the girl that chooses to be strong and fight.

So that's what she decides to do. Reagan and Vaughan team up in this episode to go find Hendrix and Nelson and keep the family safe and whole.

:)

I always love Reagan's attitude, and in this episode she did not disappoint.

...You could say I was dangerously blood thirsty and someone was going to die this morning. Possibly a Feeder. Possibly a stranger. Possibly Hendrix for leaving me behind. What happened to the whole, "Stay by me, Reagan. I need you next to me. Blah, blah, blah..." He was a dirty, filthy liar. And I was painfully worried about him.

Sadly there were no steamy Hendrix/Reagan moments this time around, but future episodes are soon to come right around the corner so I'll wait patiently.

Bring on them zombies! I'm ready for more!

AHHHHH!!!! OK, that was so good! Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. I loved the little bits of interaction we got between Reagan and Vaughan....got to see a bit more into each of their personalities, and they got to clear some air. It was kind of a weird episode in that it was basically Reagan centric....so I definitely missed Haley and the Parkers, but I LOVED the plot movement, and yet another glimpse of bad bad humanity in the apocalypse that this offered.... I seriously just want to be Reagan's friend....she is so bad ass!! And yet so human too....suffering through all the emotions that make sense. Eminently interested to see where the next ep takes us, and how these new characters fit in. And I have this horrible gut feeling that we haven't seen the last of Kane....who left me as confused as Reagan. OK, thinking about it, maybe a 4.5 stars just b/c I couldn't quite get all the willies she was getting from Kane, and it wasn't quite as clear what his motivations were....sometimes it was a-ok, sometimes I was confused...but maybe I was supposed to be...just wasn't spot on I guess....

Couldn't turn the pages fast enough!!!,
I really loved this episode, I finished it pretty quick because I just couldn't put it down. I was glad to have Regan back in the spot light. I have agonized over who I wish she would fall for, and this episode spoke highly of her feelings for Hendrix. I guess having your life and choices even in the middle of the zombie apocolypse taken away from you, will show you who your heart really belongs too. I was happy with the interaction she had with Vaughan and it helped to clear some feelings between them, although I still don't feel that is resolved. With the both of them racing to find Hendrix, and Nelson they end up in another encampment of survivors, only this one is worse in ways than the last one's they ran into. This settlement is run by a family with very strong ideas on reforming the world while living with zombies. The oldest son, Kane lays claim to Regan and well you can guess just how well this sits with her. Terrific story, and was happy with some new characters that will give us opportunities for even more stories to come in this amazing Novella series. So many things could happen.........

4.5 Stars! The best novella of the Love and Decay series so far. Episode five is back to Reagan's POV and I'm finding her voice is full of a maturity that was weak in the first few episodes, but I recognise this change as growth from overcoming so many trials. This reads true to me...gone is the pretentious, rangy teenager. Instead I see Reagan's reflections on free will and humanity as a huge jump in wisdom. I'm now invested invested in the story and not just the plot.

But as for the plot, Higginson really kicked it up in this episode. To steal a phrase from the book, "Matthias and his communist cult of insanity" really add the element of human self-righteousness and religious power run amok. Matthias' son, Kane, as the psycho self-imposed mate for the captive Reagan is diabolical and messed up with his charm and good looks...I love how this was played. I'm positive there will be some crazy drama in the future as Kane is sure to become the obsessed stalker. I'm excited for the additions of Miller and the feisty Tyler to the caravan. Sounds like it will make for some good reading!

For some reason it took me a long time to read this novella. I just seemed to get bored right at the beginning and didn't really care where it was going, I'm not sure what happened but I can't tell if it was because of my mood or because of the novella. I do feel like the story has slowed down a lot so not much is happening now, the bigger story kind of feels lost, each novella is a story about each event that happens and that's fine but it feels like the story isn't really progressing and the pace is now crawling even though all these things are happening. Another thing about these novella's is that each event can seem rushed, for example this novella felt like it was rushed and I just didn't feel like anyone was in any real trouble. I just don't know where the story is going so I'm not intrigued enough to be pulled in.

I definitely got a 'The Walking Dead' vibe from this novella, probably because it reminded me of the Governor and how he ran things in his little town. It was eerily similar in a way.

This was the best installment yet of this action packed serial. Regan and Vaughn put their contingency plan into action and head off to locate Hendrix and Nelson. There's no beating around the bush for Regan when Haley informs her that she needs to choose between the boys and Vaughn pretty much does the same. I loved the look into the new "civilized" society that had grown from the destroyed world and I really loved Regan's reactions to it. She continues to be a strong and opinionated girl while managing to maintain her humanity and not get sucked into what could have been an easy life. Kane was just creepy enough that I'm worried about what he's going to do next, but I really enjoyed his conflicted character and I'm hoping we'll see him again. I can't wait to read the next one.

I am a huge Rachel higginson fan. I love this series. Now that I have said that I have to write my first review that is not as loving. This episode was definitely a page turner just like all the other books and episodes. However not only do I love Rachel I also frequently watch the walking dead and in this episode it felt very similar to Woodbury and the governor. I am not sure if this was intentional or not. As original as Rachel's work is I was very surprised. If know one else felt that way then maybe it's just me and my eagerness to watch the next season of the walking dead. This will not deter me from reading the rest of this series of episodes because I am absolutely involved in this, hey I am pretty sure I am a barely functioning vegetarian feeder most days.

I love this series but I have to say this episode was my least favorite so far. I can't say exact why but it just sort of dragged and seemed a bit too far fetched. The fact that Reagen keeps coming across the most gentlemanly men in the apololypse is a bit far fetched. Kane is basically second in charge yet he wants her to feel comfortable and will wait for her and not touch her? Eh, a man used to that much unquestioned power...seems unlikely. Still the series is amazing and I am already on the next episode, which is going great.

WHEW What a relief!
Seriously this episode had me so anxious that I could have died of a heart attack or an aneurism. This series is bad for me, seriously.
And now that I've met Kane, I'm not impressed. He's so brainwashed he cannot discern his socks colors. I don't think he's future husband material for our free spirited Reagan here. And Hendrix, OMG I want a piece of him. I hope Reagan doesn't develop Stockholm Syndrome after being held captive 24hrs.
And on to the next!

Wow. This is my favorite so far. During a rescue attempt the tables were turned and Reagan found herself almost in the arms of a hot lunatic. I love when bad boys are brought in to stir things up. No worries, though. I am still all about Hendrix.
