Newly revised and updated, this invaluable resource from esteemed educator Robert Ramsey is packed with practical and inspirational tips for teachers. 501 Tips for Teachers covers everything from classroom management, to student relations, to personal development and motivation, to working with parents, colleagues, and the community. Educators at all levels will appreciate the book's easy-to-follow advice and no-nonsense approach to teaching.
My edition is 20 years old, and could benefit from an edited re-release. Most of the tips are already a part of my daily practice, but it is always good to be reminded of these things. Some tips are no longer appropriate for the times and can get teachers in big trouble in some districts. Even though it is not relevant to my current teaching status, I will pass it off to a younger teacher with a huge caveat to see me first before trying out tips. That way we can discuss how to safely implement them.
Weird ahh book that Hope gave me. Made me think a lot but this is one of the reasons I will leave teaching is that I just read 501 ways I could be better or 501 things I should always keep in mind every day. I can’t think of another profession like this except maybe a doctor
A lot was directed toward teaching younger grades.
#339: Conduct your class in a local mall once a year. It’s a great way for shoppers and community members to see the school in action
"George Bernard Shaw said, 'Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.' George was wrong! today's teachers have to doers. They also have to be dreamers, schemers, helpers, healers, mentors, role models, nurturers, and inspirations. Teachers are expected to be dynamic every morning and to grade papers ever night. Shaw was off the mark. Teaching today isn't for hat wimps, wannabees, or also-rants. It's society's most important, challenging profession, and it's getting more difficult all the time. In classrooms at all levels, problems are proliferating and expectations are escalating. Schools across the country are being called on to do more with less. Consequently, teachers everywhere are now looking for new sources on information and motovation."
When a book's opening few paragraphs are that... Its worth reading! 501 tips for teachers is one of the better books about education that I've read. It gives real life expectations, ideas, and tips. Far too many times have I read things that absolutly exceed anything that any normal human being can do. I reccamend this book to any teacher and any teacher in training. I wish I would have read something like this BEFORE I student taught.
I loved this book. Short and inspirational quotes and other sayings of advice that are very helpful to all teachers. I really enjoyed this book much better than all the others I have seen throughout the years.
I found this on clearance at B&N for less than $10, and I'm happily surprised to report that it was well worth it. A few contradictions (Don't show up sick to teach vs. Take pride in your own attendance), but generally this was full of excellent advice for any teacher, new or seasoned veteran.
This book is a great one for teachers to have on their shelves. The book is categorized and contains some timeless tips that will always be important in the teaching profession.
2 stars [Education] Not a book per se, but 501 tips separated into 5 vague categories. The quality of the advice includes damaging falsehood, uncommon truth, self-contradiction, political correctness, common sense, self-congratulation, and--its most salient characteristic--vagueness.
This work of Ramsey's may be in the bargain bin at Barnes and Noble, but skip it. Read Rafe Esquith's Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire if you're looking for a folksy learn-by-the-stories-I-tell book.
