The Americans on D-Day: A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion

Rate this book
Experience the all-important Normandy invasion through some of D-Day's most incredible photographs. Although it took a multinational coalition to conduct World War II's amphibious D-Day landings, the U.S. military made a major contribution to the operation that created mighty American legends and unforgettable heroes. In The Americans on A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion , WWI historian Martin K. A. Morgan presents 450 of the most compelling and dramatic photographs captured in northern France during the first day and week of its liberation. With eight chapters of place-setting author introductions, riveting period imagery, and highly detailed explanatory captions, Morgan offers anyone interested in D-Day a fresh look at a campaign that was fought seven decades ago, yet remains the object of unwavering interest to this day. While some of these images are familiar, they have been treated anonymously for far too long and haven't been placed within the proper context of time or place. Many others have never been published before. Together, these photographs reveal minute details about weapons, uniforms, and equipment, while simultaneously narrating an intimate human story of triumph, tragedy, and sacrifice. From Omaha Beach to Utah, from Sainte-Mère-Église to Pointe du Hoc, The Americans on D-Day is a striking visual record of the epic air, sea, and land battle that was the Normandy invasion.

This is a really good collection of photographs of American soldiers, sailors and airmen during the preparation for D-Day, the invasion itself, and some of the fighting afterwards. With over 400 photographs, some of which are in color, this book has something for everyone interested in the American part of D-Day.

The author is a noted World War II historian and has done a really excellent job with the captions for each photo, oftentimes identifying various weapons and pieces of equipment used by the men in the photos, along with naming many of the subjects pictured. There are some really good shots of the aftermath of battle and how the same area looks today (well, in 2010 when the photos were taken), and I would guess most of the photos in the book will be new to the reader unless they are a serious D-Day scholar.

A fine addition to any library, especially for those interested in D-Day, the U.S. Army or who enjoy the photographic art.
