Ivy Powell vowed to never marry again when her first marriage ended in the death of her husband. But then her brother sends Gideon Black to help her out. When she finds the only way she can get a loan from the bank and a contract from the stagecoach company is if she is married, she proposes to Gideon. After all, she knows he has no desire to marry either and what could be more perfect? Then the threats made to her life that brought Gideon to help continue. Only this time they are against Gideon also. Who wants them dead and why?

A very enjoyable story with tons of action and mystery.

Ivy Powell's first husband came back from the Civil War a changed man and a drinker. Ivy took over more and more of the daily operation of their business. By the time Tom died, Ivy realized she could manage by herself.

When Ivy shared the odd things that were happening at her ranch, her ill brother sent his best friend to help her -- Gideon Black. Although they are attracted to each other, each has a strong reason not to get involved.

Things turn worse because a horse and her dog are killed. Then the bank refuses to loan her money because she isn't married. The stagecoach company looks like they will stop using Ivy's ranch as a way-station. Ivy becomes desperate enough to ask Gideon to marry her (so she can get a loan and renegotiate a contract with the stagecoach company).

There's a mystery as to who would damage Ivys business and cause her harm. This is a pleasant little story about second chances. Ivy and Gideon are interesting and mature individuals. There is lots of action, although things start slowly. This is a pleasant way to spend some hours.
