Katie doesn't know what she is. All she knows that touching people drains the life out of them, and that she has some sort of mystical charm where she can influence people around her.
She gets by as a performer in Las Vegas, until one day she finds herself staring at the business end of a crossbow. Then, when a dangerous felon comes to her aid, her life will never be the same...
Excerpt:
"Ah, there you are. You've been such a challenge to find, it's hard to believe we've finally caught you."
The man that stood over me wasn't the same one that fired the crossbow. This one was shorter, with light skin and hair. And his smile was different. Whereas the man that shot the crossbow at me had a grin that looked more like a smile of success, this man's smile was malicious.
"You sure are a beautiful one... tell me, what are you willing to do to save your life?" He passed his weapon to his other hand, and reached down toward me with a gloved hand.
And I thought I was a monster.
At least I wasn't going to feel the least bit bad about what I was going to do.
"Whatever it takes," I said as I grabbed his forearm. I shot forward, wrapped my other hand around his head, and kissed him.
He resisted, but just for a moment. My hand made a fist in his hair, holding his mouth to mine. As scared as I had been, it was replaced by a rush of energy flowing into me. I felt stronger, more confident, like I could take on these men chasing me, and more beyond that. It had been so long since I even touched someone else, for a moment I completely forgot I was in danger.
Then the man collapsed at my feet, not moving. I had a fleeting thought that I should see if he was still alive. But then I remembered that he had wanted to kill me, and that he had more friends out there. I needed to run.
It's the tale of Katie, a half succubus Vegas showgirl who finds herself chased by an ancient order of monster hunters that are commanded by a demon. You know, that old saw.
The story begins when said monster hunters show up during Katie's set, which leads to a fight scene in a casino. (Even though this is all from her POV, the author take every opportunity to mention that she's only wearing lingerie and a thong.)
She escapes with the aid of a mysterious and handsome stranger, who then proceeds to dump a ton of plot points on her. There's a lot of information presented here, and it's a bit confusing.
This is an introduction to the rest of the story. This could be interesting, and it may be worth checking out if you like a dose of sexiness with your supernatural story.
Very short story. I was looking for a new series with a succubus, being that I adored both Richelle Mead's and Jill Myles's series. This wasn't quite what I had in mind, but surprisingly - I liked it. It does have a succubus, after all.
Katie is aware that she has a "curse", although she has no clue what it is. She has an idea of what it does, but she doesn't know that she has origins as a succubus. She is a Vegas performer and flees the stage when red-suited men come to her show, crossbow aimed at her. A chase ensues, and she is helped by a stranger named Jacob. She learns some surprising things about her history and I'm assuming more will be revealed in the remainder of the series.
While it was short - not nearly enough to actually get a feel for the characters, I am interested enough to continue with the rest. I got this one while it was a freebie on Amazon, but I also saw that the 6 novella series is also sold together in one book called "The Unholy Trilogy: Origins". Assuming I don't unknowingly have the rest of the series in single form on the old Kindle, I may purchase the book to finish out the first part of series. I'm also assuming (a lot of assuming going on here...) that it will be a three part series...you know, "trilogy" and all :)
A very short into into into his novel in hopes of sucking you into the story and making you want to purchase the next installment. Except for the two/to typo, Mr. Gage has indeed done that. I would however suggest he not put the line to break sceens. It's quite jarring.
All in all, I want to find out more about the characters, and the plot, and you will too.
This short story was a good read. I find myself already trying to figure out how Katie came to be. I look forward to getting the answers that her mother has left her to find out on her own.
It was ok but nothing that will change the world. Its one of those books that you know you wont be reading any time soon like never actually and that is why I deleted it from my kindle.....
