THE EARTH GIVES WAY TO THE SEA, THE SEA BOWS BEFORE THE WIND, THE WIND FEEDS THE FLAME, THE FLAME BURNS THE WORLD OF MAN DOWN TO THE EARTH.
White Halls is no longer a sleepy little town. Its houses lie smoldering on their foundations. The residents take refuge in their homes, afraid to leave. And the town’s prodigal son and newest Wind Warrior, Xander Sirocco, has fled.
Xander survived the first assault on his life by the Flame Caste, but it’s at a great personal cost. He and Sammy are left to bury his family and tend to his grandfather, who lies in a coma.
With the weight of the world on his shoulders, he can’t help but feel the fight against the Fire Caste is hopeless. It seems that way, that is, until he learns of a secret race of Elementals, embodiments of the elemental powers that the different castes wield. With the power of the Elementals comes a chance to save not just the Wind Warriors and Sammy, but the world itself.
Emboldened, he sets off to find the Wind Elemental and with it, the hope for his survival. Too bad no one has seen the Wind Elemental in generations and now thinks she’s just a myth. As he quickly learns, however, the Fire Elemental isn’t a myth. It’s real and it has a secret plan for his girlfriend.
Jon Messenger (Born 1979 in London, England) serves as an United States Army Major in the Medical Service Corps. Since graduating from the University of Southern California in 2002, writing Science Fiction has remained his passion, a passion that has continued through multiple combat and humanitarian deployments. Jon wrote the "Brink of Distinction" trilogy, of which "Burden of Sisyphus" is the first book, while serving a 16-month deployment in Baghdad, Iraq.
I think this book is even better than the first one in this series! In this one is also action right from the start and we learn more about the world Jon Messenger created. The introduction of the Elementals was very refreshing and brought a new dynamic to the story. . The journey the Wind Warriors are going through in this one is very captivating and left me wanting more. . And more Sean is always a good thing :). I even started liking Jessica more, she's definitely not an annoying sorority girl anymore.
Thanks for sending me a free copy from the Making Connections group.
Amazing and Incredible Read! Jon had done it again! I couldn't put the book down! I think it may be even better then the last one, He sure has our done himself for sure! there was even more action and drama, more power and intrigue and most of all more adventure!
THE EARTH GIVES WAY TO THE SEA, THE SEA BOWS BEFORE THE WIND, THE WIND FEEDS THE FLAME, THE FLAME BURNS THE WORLD OF MAN DOWN TO THE EARTH.
Xander may have survived the first round with the fire Caste but what he lost far out weighs the rewards. With his parents now gone and his grandfather in a coma Xander literally has the worlds survival on his shoulders. His home town has been over taken by the fire Caste and Xander's only solace is that he has the other wind warriors and now Sammy by his side. Xander feels that it all maybe hopeless as the world crumbles under the onslaught of the Fire Warriors.
Sammy feels so bad for Xander and tries to be their for him as much as she can, but it is hard to be away from the people she has always known and only home she has ever had. She feels safe with Xander like she never has before, but she has been hiding a secret one that she knows may tear them apart.
When Sammy is Kidnapped and their home is compromised Xander has no choice but to put his feelings of revenge aside and do what is best for the earth and Sammy. Xander goes in search of the Wind Elemental the mythical creature that started the wind Caste, hoping she can help. But no one has ever seen her and the stories are just myths right? no one knows, and Xander's hoping for the worlds sake and for Sammy's that they find her.
I sooooo loved this book! Jon blew me away with the first book and then again with this one! I loved Sammy in the first book and I still loved her in this one but I thought she could have stood up for herself a little more with Patrick and Thea, she was so strong in the first book and she seemed so lost and out of her element in this book(which I guess she was...LOL) because when she was kidnapped she became the strong and defiant Sammy I loved again!
The Fire Caste as a whole are a pretty formidable enemy in as themselves but with General Abraxas and the big bad "eye" behind the throne well they are just plain bad ass as far and villains go!
Jon Messenger is a brilliant author and I can't wait for the next book! if you haven't read these book you sooooo have to NOW!
Flame Caller is the second in Author Jon Messenger’s World Aflame series, and continues the epic tale of Xander Sirocco; the twenty-year-old slacker turned hero.
This book takes place immediately after Wind Warrior, Xander dealing with the death of his parents and his grandfather’s injury. Everything around him is crumbling, the Fire Caste is winning and the world is falling apart. He’s in despair, not knowing what to do. It takes the whispered words of the wind to remind him that there’s still a chance, and when he is faced with a myth of a being that could help, he chases it without hesitation in the hopes that he and the rest of the Wind Warriors can save the planet from a creature thought only to be legend.
I can’t really give away too much of this book, since it is a sequel and you’d have to read the first book to understand everything. If you’ve read the first book, then all I can say is: READ THIS BOOK.
This is a perfect sequel. It captures the same intensity of the first book, and sprinkles in even more epicness. I absolutely love Jon Messenger’s style of writing, the action scenes flawlessly flowing and sending chills down the spine. The story of this series is absolutely unique, nothing cliché about it. I found myself in awe and fascinated by the world the author has created. It contains elements of the supernatural, apocalyptic, spiritual, and adventure genres and blends them all together in the perfect concoction that is Flame Caller.
After reading this book, I don’t know how I could possibly stay patient for the third novel in the series!
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!!! ***Received this ebook from Clean Teen Publishing for an honest review
Okay I mentioned this before, but the cover on this book is awesome. It works and attracts you to the book. I love everything about it!! Marya rocks at making covers for Clean Teen!!
Jon tells us a fabulous story. He has a way with words that you feel that you are right there with the characters.
Xander is a great hero though I did want to slap Xander a few times when he was having a pity party to snap him out of it and was mad at him a time or two, but I’m not telling you why because it would spoil the adventure for you.
Xander’s friends Sammy, Sean, and Jessica are still integral parts of his life, but everyone is having a rough go in this book. The Fire Caste is causing havoc and turmoil for everyone. Xander feels the pressure from everyone to save humanity.
I have no idea where the story is going which is frustrating but awesome at the same time. The ending was awesome and infuriating all at the same time which again I won’t tell you why because it would spoil your adventure. The book was over much too quickly, and now I’m in another holding pattern because I want book 3!! Jon, please hurry, I gots to know what happens next!!
If you read Wind Warrior, you have to read this one too! And to all my friends out there who love books about elemental powers who haven’t read Jon’s books yet, what are you waiting for!!
I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good adventure story!!
Flame Caller is the second installment of the World Aflame series by Jon Messenger.
After reading the first book I could not wait to get my hands on the second one to see how the story unfolded. It was not a disappointment!! I thoroughly enjoyed every second if this novel. It was fast paced and exciting throughout and every spare chance I got - even in between my classes - I was reading it. It was just that good.
The story line I think, develops well from Book 1 and themes and ideas are developed parallel to each other. Messenger artistically pieces together his story, forming multiple layers of his story world without allowing the reader to become confused. This truly is a feat to be commended.
Also in need of commendation is the standard of this young adult novel. Even though the characters are 'of age' to indulge in certain things in our society, Messenger keeps the story line clean and even the love story is sweet and innocent, yet believable. This just goes to show the quality of Messenger's work. A truly commendable series in the making and I anxiously await all the other releases!
Flame Caller receives 5 huge stars from me!
Disclaimer: I received a free e copy of this novel in return for an honest review, and honest is exactly what it is.
The saga continues... A few quick points to start this review: I still love Sean best, Jessica is definitely growing on me, poor Sammy and I'm looking forward to the next book.
The connection between Xander and Sammy is explored and explained in this installment. The path that the two main characters are on leaves me wondering where the heck this series is going and I cannot wait to find out where this all leads.
Sean and Jessica have a much larger role and I can't begin to tell you how glad I am about that. There was one point where I wanted to smack Xander for both his friends but he comes through in the end.
This book has moments of sacrifice, betrayal, doubt, chaste love and humor, not to mention that some key pieces seem to fall into place, this book had me laughing at times and tearing up at others.
The world Messenger is building just gets better with this book. The elementals are an intriguing and exciting twist, that I look forward to learning more about and what will happen to Xander and Sammy because of them. A well deserved 5 stars, and even better then Wind Warrior.
I didn't think Jon could beat the first book Wind Warrior but he beat it out of the park with Flame Caller.
With his parents gone and his grandfather in a coma (which broke my heart by the way I love him) he now feels the weight of what he is meant to do. Xander is luck that he has Sammy by his side, Well until she gets kidnapped (Why did you hae to make her get kidnapped for Jon? I am joking Jon). It broke my heart to see Sammy get kidnapped. But now Xander has to find a way to save her and Earth. Can he do it? I don't know maybe you should pick up this awesome book for yourself to find out.
Flame Caller is a must read. It has everything your looking for in a book. Love, Betrayal, Suspense (I love me some suspense). Jon Messenger knew what he was doing when he wrote this book. He knew he would catch our eyes and our imaginations. But now I need to keep on reading his books to find out how the series ends.
Flame Caller is the 2nd book in the World Aflame series.
I found it to be even more catching and eventful than Wind Warrior. With the Wind Warriors struggling to survive the Fire Warriors, Xander must find the Wind Elemental to help save the world and to try and save Sammy from becoming the Fire Elemental's host.
my favorite quote from this book would have to be when Xander told Sammy... "You're stuck with me, for good or bad. We're in this for the longhaul."
This book was an awesome follow up too the first one. I am completely hooked on this series. I love watching Xander and Sammy change in their roles as the embrace their powers and situations around them. I can't wait for the third one to be released!!!!!!!!!!!
*********************************************************************************** My Thoughts:
Okay, to anyone who read my review of Wind Warrior, you will remember that it definitely wasn't my favorite book ever, but I did highly praise Messenger's ability to craft this new paranormal world. My biggest complain was that the branding of the book was a little off. I highly criticized the fact that it's marketed as an NA when it is definitely not an NA in any aspect other than the age of the character. Unfortunately that is my biggest complaint for book two as well. HOWEVER I am not going to get that again here, why? Because book two was AMAZING. Seriously. I don't know what changed between books one and two but book two blew my socks off.
I'll start with the few negative things I have to say about this novel. And they can both be related to the first book. The language in this book does not read like an NA. Not in any way, shape or form. I was particularly confused at one part of the novel in which something terrible (no spoilers here) happens to Xander and all he can say is "I'm just pissed". He's "pissed"? Wooowwww. Alert the masses. Xander is "pissed". Again, in an NA there should be a whole hell of a lot more anger involved than just one word. I'm still not considering this an NA, I just can't.
Secondly, some of the characters really threw me off. We really were only introduced to two new characters in this book, but they were incredible. My problems are still with Sean and Jessica. I just don't see their point. At one point in the novel Xander says that Sean is the only person who can help them. Why? Because he can use the internet and read a weather map. I'm sorry, but a much better reason would have been "hey, I have to go save my best friend, I can't let him die". Instead he had to go with them because he was the only one who knew the way to Iceland without a map. Seriously? Wind Warriors can fly and detect air pressure changes. I'm pretty sure if they headed in the right direction that they would find a huge ass hurricane tearing up the planet, just saying. Jessica was still a brat, but not as bad as book one. If anything I think she shouldn't be there, but then again, this isn't my story. Aside from those two things, that's the only negative things I have to say about Flame Caller. That's it! Let's move on to the positives!
How about EVERYTHING ELSE?! Book two was everything I wanted from book one. It was emotional, it was suspenseful, and FULL of action. Man. I even read some parts a second time, just because so much happens! It was incredible. Huge props to Mr. Messenger for taking book 2 to the next level. The relationship between Xander and Sammy (my favorite character) was awesome and we see lots of great character development.
The villains in this book, well... the two villains in this book are truly terrifying. General Abraxas is one kick ass dude. He is ruthless and doesn't care who stands in his way, but once he "becomes one" with his destiny and teams up with our even bigger villain, the Fire Elemental, we have one unstoppable force. I want to talk about the Fire Elemental for a second, so precede with caution... **MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD** The Fire Elemental is a dragon living below the Earth and controlling the Flame Warriors. How kick ass is that? He definitely has a Smaug feel about him because he talks and is seriously evil. He has been trapped in his "much to small underground prison" by the Earth Elemental millennia ago to avoid his wrath at their plan to sustain humanity, who they have grown to like. The Flame Elemental plays a HUGE role in the very last chapter of the book and has be seriously wanting to hurry up and finish this so I can go read book 3. All I can say is that if Sammy dies, I'M going to be "pissed".
The Elementals, Fire and Wind are the two new characters in this book. They add so much to our story and really make this story great. Book three is about the Water Elemental so I can only imagine there will be a fourth book about the Earth Elemental. I have tweeted Messenger and am awaiting a reply on the status of the rest of the series. I will embed any reply I get here! Seriously though, those new characters make the storyline so much deeper and exciting to read. Xander has quite the adventure in store for him and I cannot wait to check it out.
All-in-all I am giving Flame Caller a 4.5 star rating! Much higher than my review of Wind Warrior, series, it was THAT much better in my opinion! For any readers who may have been on the fence about the series, go ahead and take the chance with book 1 because this second installment in the series makes up for it in spades! I am so glad I continued reading and cannot wait to present to you guys my thoughts on book three Water Shaper ASAP! ***********************************************************************************
Flame Caller by Jon Messenger picks up right where Wind Warrior leaves off. There are more twists and turns to the story as Xander struggles to figure out how to stop the end of the world. Sammy is being held hostage by her clan. I feel my heart break for Xander as he experiences more losses to the war. He finds the answer to how to fight the fire elemental, but it does not come without a cost. There is a twist at the end of the book that had me talking to myself. I so look forward to reading the next installment. I just have to find out what happens with Xander and Sammy (who is no longer Sammy). I just love a book that keeps my guessing. 5 stars Jon for great entertainment.
The second book is better than the first, but it's kind of hard when I had all the information from the first book and there are these preconceived notions from that and then still inconsistencies in this one. I also feel like the characters aren't acting their age and that not enough information is given, still, to know what exactly is going on or why things are playing out as they are. I hope that the third book will clear things up quite a bit.
First off thank you to the publisher for providing me a copy of this book. I have to say I wasn't the craziest fan of this one compared to the first. It did keep me interested but I loved when Xander learned about his powers. From the start you go right into the story and action. It makes you want to read more and see how the story ends. I can't wait to see how the series ends.
This is a second book in a series and I find that second books are just an interlude between two books. Usually not too much happens and I felt that was the case with this one. I will most likely read the third in the series just to see what happens with the world.
