Sir Laurens Jan van der Post was a 20th Century South African Afrikaner author of many books, farmer, war hero, political adviser to British heads of government, close friend of Prince Charles, godfather of Prince William, educator, journalist, humanitarian, philosopher, explorer, and conservationist.
Fascinating read. The author spent time in Japan in the 1920s, then as a prisoner of war (POW) during World War II in the 1940s, then visited Japan again in the 1960s. What touched me most is his respect and admiration for Japan: it's people and the country in general. Though the book is dated (written over 50 years ago), it does give a glimpse of what Japan was like from his perspective after WWII.
